Chapter 1394 Abandoning Principles
Gardell closed his eyes and took a deep breath of the air, which smelled sweet like pine resin and musty like the cave. When he opened his eyes again, the weariness in them was still there, but there was a hint of resolute coldness.
“Elisa, take two men and go to contact the vampire family near that abandoned logging camp seventy miles to the east. Be careful, observe first, state your purpose, and only talk about trade, not subservience; we need food, medicine, warm clothing, and... information about all the unusual energy fluctuations in this area, especially possible spatial anomalies.”
“Karel,” he looked at the elder angel, “you are responsible for contacting the wandering werewolf tribes in the western hills. They should also have been affected by this event and need information. In exchange for their commitment to protection and intelligence sharing, we will use some ancient records we know about the connection between the lunar cycle and werewolf power.”
"The rest of you, reinforce the concealment here and take turns on guard duty. No one is allowed to contact any humans without my permission, especially those witchers who appear to be organized."
The order was given, and the angels by the campfire nodded silently and began to act separately.
There was no cheering, no excitement, only a compromise that had to be made in order to survive.
A day later, the transactions began to take place in various clandestine ways.
In the underground cellar of a desolate ranch in Montana, Elisa faces three pale-faced vampires with blood-red eyes. Their leader is an ancient man who calls himself Marcus, dressed in an out-of-place classical suit, with a mocking and curious smile on his face.
"Angels... have fallen so low as to make deals with us 'parasites'?" Marcus toyed with an old silver coin. "What a delightful irony."
Elisa forced herself to remain calm, ignoring the mockery in the other person's words and the strong smell of blood around her.
"We offer three natural leyline nodes that can weaken the effects of sunlight on you, along with a fragment of an ancient prayer about how to use lunar tides to gather dark energy, in exchange for access to three safe houses under your control, regular fresh blood replacements, and all reports from your intelligence network regarding spatial rifts, ancient teleportation arrays, or similar phenomena."
Marcus's blood-red eyes narrowed.
“The leyline node…interesting. The prayer fragment needs verification. The safe house and blood plasma are fine. As for the intelligence…it depends on whether what you’re offering is worth it.” He licked his fangs. “Also, I heard there are a few small towns to the south with lax defenses and plenty of blood…and there happen to be a few annoying werewolf hunters operating there. Perhaps you could inadvertently reveal some of their patterns of activity?”
Eliza froze.
This is to indirectly make them accomplices.
“We only exchange intelligence and supplies; we don’t participate in the hunt,” she said through gritted teeth.
"Whatever you want." Marcus shrugged. "Deals can be negotiated slowly, but cooperation without a pledge of loyalty is always fragile, don't you think, Miss Angel?"
In the end, Elisa left with some supplies and limited intelligence, her mood even heavier than when she arrived.
She knew that some boundaries, once blurred, were impossible to redraw.
On the other side, in the moonlit wilderness of Wyoming.
Kalil faced a dozen pairs of wolf eyes that glowed green in the darkness. The werewolf leader was an exceptionally burly man covered in scars, who made a low growling sound from his throat.
"Knowledge of the moon...that's fine." The werewolf chieftain's voice was gruff. "Protecting you from our tribe's attacks in this area is also acceptable. Intelligence...whatever we know, we'll tell you, but you also have to do something for us." "What is it?"
"A new group of Bartholomew's angels has arrived in the northern valley. They are hunting all living things, including some of my brothers." Hatred flashed in the werewolf leader's green eyes. "Tell us about their camp location, defensive weaknesses, and activity times. We want revenge."
Khalil fell silent.
Providing intelligence on fellow creatures to dark beings, even those from opposing factions, is still more of a breach of ethical boundaries than the deals made with Elizabeth.
But as he looked at the wounded werewolves before him, struggling to survive, and thought of his companions in the cave, suffering from hunger and cold, their eyes growing increasingly desperate, and of the two gruesome wounds on Gadriel's back...
“I will…try to investigate,” he finally said in his dry voice.
Even worse was the contact with those underground witchers.
These people are not traditional dark creatures; they were once members of the Witcher Guild, but were expelled due to ideological differences, rule violations, or their descent into corruption due to a simple pursuit of power.
They are familiar with the ways and methods of witchers, and they act more cunningly and without any scruples.
In the basement of a secluded roadside motel in Colorado, Gadrill personally met a rebellious witcher leader nicknamed "Viper".
The other party was a lean, middle-aged man with eyes as cold as a venomous snake, and his body reeked of gunpowder, blood, and some kind of dark magic.
"The knowledge of angels? Interesting." Viper toyed with a dagger engraved with an inverted pentagram. "I'm not interested in how you forge weapons or how you fly. What I'm interested in is how to strip other creatures of their life force to replenish yourself, how to create widespread fear and chaos, and how to make those self-righteous guild demon hunters suffer terribly."
Gadriel suppressed his discomfort and disgust.
“We don’t have that kind of knowledge, but we do have some theories about energy structure and weaknesses in soul protection that might help you improve your equipment and spells. In exchange, we need weapons—not ordinary firearms, but specially enchanted weapons that can effectively damage angels.”
"There's also intelligence about the Witcher Guild's recent large-scale mobilization, about any possible spatial anomalies, and... safe passages to help us evade the guild's main search net."
“Theory?” Viper scoffed. “I want something practical. Here’s what we’ll do: you guys do me a small favor. I know you have keen senses, so next time my team goes to clear out a disobedient village, you guys can check beforehand to see if there are any guild demon hunters lying in ambush, or if there are any hidden protective magic circles.”
"In return, I will give you the weapons you need, as well as some information about the location of the guild's secret vault, where you may find ancient documents that interest you."
Use the perception of an angel to clear the way for a massacre of innocent humans.
Gadriel's face turned extremely ugly; this was even more bloody than providing intelligence.
"That's impossible." He refused flatly. (End of Chapter)
