Chapter 1421 Questioning the Heart
She turned and walked toward the canyon exit.
"Passed, next one."
The third round of testing began five days after the second round ended.
This time, all applicants who passed the first two rounds were summoned to designated locations in various war zones for psychological testing.
The ancient technique that is said to be able to see through people's hearts has been improved by Wu Heng and has become the core tool for the third round of selection in the Demon Hunter Knight Project.
The psychological testing facility for the North American theater was located on the fifth basement level of the Kansas base.
This is a huge circular hall, with complex runes carved on the floor and seven glowing energy crystals suspended in the dome.
One by one, the applicants entered the center of the spell array and stood in the middle of the runes, while the examiners stood outside the spell array watching the reaction of the energy crystal core.
As Isaac stepped into the spell circle, his heart pounded; the spell circle was glowing.
Light rose from his feet, spreading upwards along his body, and finally converging in the crystal core above his head. The crystal core began to change color, from transparent to light red, and then from light red to dark red.
The examiner stared at the crystal core, looking at the readings on it.
“Hatred level: Extremely high.” His voice was as calm as reading a menu. “Desire for revenge: Extremely high; Selfishness level: Medium; Human loyalty: Extremely high.”
He paused for a moment and looked at Isaac.
"Your reason for signing up is 'kill them all'?"
Isaac nodded.
"For the sake of family?"
Isaac nodded again.
The examiner remained silent for a few seconds.
"If you had the chance to kill an angel, but you would die in the process, would you still kill him?"
Isaac didn't even think about it.
"meeting."
"If you had the chance to kill ten angels, but you would become a monster who only knows how to kill, would you still kill them?"
"meeting."
"If you had the chance to kill a hundred angels, but your family wouldn't be resurrected as a result, would you still do it?"
Isaac remained silent.
He recalled the family photo, and his wife's expression at the last moment—fear, despair, and reluctance to leave him.
I recall the bright smiles on the faces of my two children.
“I don’t know,” he said.
"If your family were to come back to life and you were required to kill a hundred innocent people, would you still do it?"
"No." This time, he didn't hesitate.
The examiner looked at him, at the burning red light inside the crystal core.
"Pass, next."
The psychological testing facility in the European theater was located in an old church on the outskirts of Paris. The church's stained glass windows had long since shattered, leaving only empty window frames.
The wind blew in through the hole, causing the light on the runes and spell array to flicker slightly.
When Elena entered the church and saw the spell circle, she suddenly remembered how she first held a sword forty years ago.
She was only twenty-two years old at the time, and had just lost her father. Holding the silver sword passed down from her grandfather, she stood in front of her father's grave and vowed to kill all the demons who had killed him.
Forty years later, she stands here, waiting for a spell array to see through her heart.
She walked into the center of the spell array.
A ray of light rose.
The crystal above my head began to change color; this time it wasn't red, but a pale gold, like the afterglow of a setting sun.
The examiner looked at the crystal core and frowned slightly.
"Loyalty: Extremely high; Selfishness: Close to zero; Hatred: Medium; Guilt: High."
He looked at Elena.
"What are you feeling guilty about?"
Elena remained silent for a long time.
“My son,” she recalled. “He took a different path, and I thought he was safe, then Manchester…”
She didn't continue.
The examiner didn't ask any further questions.
"If you had a chance to become a Demon Hunter and gain immense power, but at the cost of never knowing the whereabouts of your son, would you be willing?"
Elena was stunned.
She had thought about many things, but not this one.
Her son, her only son.
The last message came on the third day after the angel's fall, when he sent a text from his Manchester apartment: "Mom, I'm okay, don't worry."
Then the communication was lost.
She didn't know what Manchester was like now, or if her son was still alive. "I don't know," she said hoarsely.
The examiner looked at her.
"You can choose to opt out."
Elena closed her eyes.
Three seconds later, she opened her eyes.
No refund.
"Sure?"
"determine."
"why?"
“Because if I become a demon hunter, I can kill more angels, end this war sooner, and…” she paused, “…find him sooner.”
The examiner remained silent for a few seconds.
"Pass, next."
The psychological testing facility for the Asian theater was located in an abandoned temple at the foot of the Himalayas.
The Buddha statues in the temple had long been moved away, leaving only empty shrines. The incantation array was set up in front of the shrines, and the light shining on that empty space looked somewhat eerie.
Kyle's hands were still trembling when he entered the temple.
His injuries hadn't healed yet. Five days ago, during a combat test, that angel broke three of his ribs, tore his muscles, and caused internal bleeding that nearly killed him.
But he still came and walked into the center of the spell array.
A ray of light rose.
The crystal on my head began to change color, first light blue, then white, and finally settling on a pure, transparent color.
The examiner looked at the crystal core and raised an eyebrow.
"What color is this?" someone asked from the side.
"Never seen anything like it." The examiner frowned. "Too clean."
He looked at Kyle.
Have you ever killed anyone before?
Kyle shook his head.
Have you ever killed an angel?
Kyle shook his head.
"Then why did you come?"
Kyle recounted the story: the angel who saved him, the figure being taken away, and the life he owed.
The examiner remained silent for a long time after hearing this.
"If your benefactor is dead, will you avenge him after becoming a Demon Hunter?"
Kyle thought about it.
"do not know."
"do not know?"
"I never thought about revenge. I just want to... never owe anyone anything again."
The examiner looked at him, at the pure, transparent crystal core.
"Pass, next."
The third round of testing lasted seven days.
The reasons for elimination are varied: too selfish, not loyal enough, consumed by hatred, or dominated by fear.
One guy stood in the spell circle for three seconds, and the crystal core turned pure black. The examiner glanced at it and immediately announced that he would be banned from joining the Witcher Guild for life.
As the guy was being dragged out, he was still shouting, "I didn't do anything, I just wanted to become stronger!"
The examiner looked at his retreating figure and asked, "What is the purpose of becoming stronger?"
He couldn't shout anymore.
Seven days later, the final figures were released.
Of the three million people, 13,247 remain.
These 10,000 people will enter the final round of trials.
Ten people are selected from ten thousand.
The day the news broke, Isaac sat in a basement in the ruins of Chicago, staring blankly at the notification on his phone that 'You have passed the third round of screening' for a long time.
District 17 is gone, his family is gone, but he is still alive and moving forward.
He touched the family photo on his chest, the one that was half-burnt and had been pressed against his heart for thirty-seven days.
“Wait for me,” he said to the photo. “After I eliminate the remaining 9,990 out of those 10,000, I will avenge you.”
He carefully folded the photo and tucked it into the innermost part of his body. (End of Chapter)
