When they arrived at Fengmen Village, time had quietly slipped past one o'clock in the morning.

Soon, a team member raised a puzzling question:

"Team leader, I heard that Fengmen Village has been abandoned for a long time, how come the lights are still on in the village now?"

Chen Shu looked in the direction of his team member's finger, and indeed, in the vaguely visible village not far away, every household had lights on, making it look particularly lively.

"This shouldn't be the case. Fengmen Village has been abandoned for several years..."

The strange light made Chen Shu feel a little helpless, as the situation before him was completely different from the information he had.

The other team members also subconsciously held their breath. A deserted village was now brightly lit. In this deep mountain forest, it looked eerie no matter how you looked at it.

"Everyone, be careful, there seems to be something wrong with this place..."

Chen Shu frowned and pulled out a pistol from his waist. Seeing this, other investigators followed suit, and a group of people walked past the village monument of Fengmen Village and slowly moved towards the direction of the light.

As they got closer and closer to Fengmen Village, a cold wind seemed to be blowing on their necks. Although the investigation team was composed of young and strong men, they could not help but feel a chill on their backs in this strange atmosphere.

Chen Shu subconsciously touched the pendant on his chest. It was a peace amulet passed down from his family. Although he didn't believe in it, it was what his grandmother insisted on him wearing. The uneasiness in his heart at the moment made him touch the amulet on his chest again. The familiar touch made him feel a little more at ease.

The group walked into the brightly lit Fengmen Village, but the surroundings were strangely quiet, and it didn't look like anyone was moving around. On the two trees at the entrance of the village, two white lanterns were hung, one on the left and one on the right.

In the folklore of Dongda University, white lanterns have always been regarded as a symbol of bad luck. As the saying goes, people like red, while ghosts like white. This is the reason. In folklore, white lanterns are usually only used during funerals, implying that they illuminate the path for ghosts and help them find the right direction.

When Chen Shu passed by here, he couldn't help but take a few more glances. He wondered who hung up the two lanterns and why this village didn't show any signs of being abandoned.

In the middle of the night, every household in the village had lights on, but when the investigators knocked on the door, there was no response. Could this be a deserted village? But if it was, why were the lights on?

These questions lingered in the minds of Chen Shu and others. They subconsciously slowed down their steps for fear of disturbing anything. As they did not know the situation, Chen Shu did not let anyone enter the house to check, but only walked around the village carefully.

This Fengmen Village was completely different from what was said in the legend. Not only was it not abandoned, but the buildings in the village were still brand new. The only weird thing was that the village was too quiet. They didn't see a single person from beginning to end.

As the investigation team went deeper into the village, the wind around them became stronger and stronger. Along with the wind came a strange sound.

“Squeak… squeak…”

This sudden sound broke the silence of the place, and Chen Shu quickly led the team members to follow the sound. Soon, they came to a spacious house behind the village.

From the wide-open general gate of this house, it can be seen that dignitaries once lived here. Two door pillars support the beams on the left and right, and they are carved with dragons and phoenixes, with exquisite craftsmanship. Just from the gate, it can be seen that this house has at least several entrances and exits.

Unlike other houses that we have seen along the way, this place is either inhabited by wealthy people in the village or by people in power.

At this moment, there was a recliner next to the general's door, which was swaying slowly in the gusts of cold wind, as if there was an invisible person sitting on it. The creaking sound reached the ears of the investigators, giving them goose bumps all over their bodies.

Chen Shu mustered up his courage, held the gun tightly in his hand, slowly walked to the door, and pushed open the half-closed door. However, what he saw was a corpse in a service uniform.

The body was holding a gun in the same position as before death, with the muzzle pointed at his head. The investigators quickly surrounded him and confirmed through his ID that he was a service officer of the Service Department.

But at this moment, the investigators also noticed that this person seemed to have committed suicide. And before he committed suicide, he seemed to have seen something very horrible, and his expression was very hideous.

Chen Shu gently pried open the serviceman's left hand and found that his nails were deeply embedded in the flesh. This means that the serviceman must have been under tremendous psychological pressure at the time. Coupled with the expression on his face, it can be inferred that something must have happened here before, which made the serviceman choose to commit suicide in an extremely devastated state.

The other investigators were all standing near Chen Shu, and no one noticed... the amulet on Chen Shu's chest actually swayed slightly in the windless environment.

Thinking that the report mentioned that two service personnel were missing, Chen Shu immediately stood up and walked towards the half-closed room in front of him. However, when he pushed open the door, he soon saw the body of another service personnel.

The expression of this orderly was almost identical to that of the previous man, the only difference being that he had died of suffocation. His hands were still tightly clasped around his neck, clearly indicating that this orderly had strangled himself to death.

How is this possible? Chen Shu frowned and looked around. Soon, his attention fell on the strange mirror in front of him.

Whose house would have a mirror facing the front door? He slowly walked to the mirror and looked at it carefully, but he didn't see anything unusual.

However, the investigator standing at the door pointed at the mirror in surprise and said:

"Team Leader, what's reflected in the mirror doesn't seem to be where we are now!"

Hearing this, Chen Shu looked at the mirror again, but he still didn't see any changes. However, through the investigator's description, he realized that the image he saw in the mirror seemed different from what others saw.

The other investigators saw a dilapidated room and could even describe the spider webs on the beams. But Chen Shu saw nothing changed. The room was brand new and the mirrors were bright. "Is there some hallucinogenic gas here?"

In order to ensure the safety of the investigators, Chen Shu quickly covered his mouth and nose and had the body dragged out and back out of the room.

Before Chen Shu had time to think about the strange things happening in front of him, white fog suddenly filled the surroundings. All the investigators felt very uneasy. They held their pistols tightly and stood back to back in a protective posture.

Chen Shu also looked around solemnly, and at this moment, he seemed to see a few children looming in the white mist. These children were wearing tattered clothes, but they were happily spinning around together.

They clapped their hands and sang some kind of ballad:

"The sky was desolate, the earth was vast, and a pretty girl fell from the sky.

The girl is not tainted by worldly affairs, she marries the groom in her shroud..."

Chen Shu couldn't hear the rest of the lyrics clearly, but he always felt that the children were running around in the white fog, repeating the song over and over.

However, this ballad sounds strange. A pretty girl falls from the sky, wearing a shroud to marry a groom... A shroud, isn't that something only dead people wear?

What on earth had happened in Fengmen Village? What on earth had the two service personnel seen? Confused thoughts intertwined in Chen Shu's mind, and a feeling of dizziness spread uncontrollably...

When Chen Shu opened his eyes again, it was already daybreak. He tried to sit up, but was surprised to find that the other investigators in the yard were lying in a mess, motionless.

"Wake up, wake up!" Chen Shu shouted anxiously, but no matter how he called, the investigators remained unconscious and did not respond at all.

Chen Shu stood up in a daze. Everything that happened last night was like a dream, and he couldn't tell whether it was real or fake. But the nursery rhymes sung by those childlike voices were deeply imprinted in his mind like a brand, and could not be erased.

What on earth was going on with the sudden appearance of the white fog? Why did they suddenly faint in the white fog? Whenever Chen Shu tried to recall what happened last night, he would feel a splitting headache.

Looking at the unconscious investigators on the ground, Chen Shu knew that it was not a good idea to stay here for long. He drove away quickly, found a place with a signal, and immediately reported the situation to his superiors. Soon, the Security Department sent a team to rescue them.

As Fengmen Village was hidden deep in the mountains, helicopters could not reach it, so the rescue operation had to rely on manpower. It took a lot of effort to take all the unconscious investigators away. At the same time, the bodies of the two service personnel were quickly sent to the Service Department.

When Du Qiang saw the bodies of the two service personnel, he found it hard to accept the fact. The forensic doctor quickly performed an autopsy on the two, and the result was unexpected: both of them committed suicide. One of the service personnel actually strangled himself to death.

Du Qiang found this result unbelievable. He questioned the forensic doctor: "How is this possible? How can a person strangle himself to death?" The forensic doctor shook his head helplessly and said that no signs of harm were found on them. The bruises and fingerprints on their necks were consistent with suicide.

Du Qiang left the forensic laboratory in silence, feeling heavy-hearted. He blamed himself and thought that if he hadn't asked the two men to stay, they might not have ended up like this. But what did they experience in Fengmen Village? Why did they choose to commit suicide to end their lives?
At this time, Chen Shu, the team leader of the Security Department who delivered the body, was waiting in the conference room. Du Qiang tried to adjust his mood and walked into the conference room.

"You are Team Leader Chen, right? I am Du Qiang, the captain of the Criminal Investigation Brigade." Du Qiang greeted politely and then went straight to the point.

After Chen Shu shook hands with Du Qiang, he said directly: "Captain Du, we are now in charge of the Fengmen Village case. I want to know what clues you have obtained. Because many of our investigators are inexplicably unconscious and are receiving treatment in the hospital. It is our responsibility to find out the truth as soon as possible."

Du Qiang did not refuse and described in detail how they went to Fengmen Village: "We were originally going to look for the five young men. After we confirmed that they were indeed looking for Fengmen Village, we felt it was our responsibility to find them, otherwise we would be held responsible if anything went wrong. But after entering Fengmen Village, we found that it was just a desolate and dilapidated village. Most of the houses had collapsed, with only a few still standing. The villagers had moved away for who knows how many years, and the place had become a ruin."

"Wait..." Chen Shu suddenly interrupted Du Qiang, "Captain Du, are you saying that the Fengmen Village you saw was a desolate and dilapidated village with collapsed houses?"

Du Qiang nodded doubtfully: "Yes, this Fengmen Village has been empty for who knows how many years, so it naturally looks very dilapidated. Is there anything strange about this?"

Chen Shu hesitated to speak, and after a moment of silence, he said bitterly: "But what we saw was not like this... We arrived at Fengmen Village at about one o'clock in the morning. The whole village was brightly lit, the houses were brand new, and there was not even any weeds on the ground. We were very puzzled at the time, thinking that this Fengmen Village was completely different from the legend. And I still remember clearly that there were two white lanterns hanging on the two big trees at the entrance of the village. I was wondering at the time, who lit these lanterns?"

"Ah? How is this possible?" Du Qiang looked at Chen Shu in disbelief.

"I'm sure we're in Fengmen Village because we saw the village monument," Chen Shu explained. "And I only said that the lights were bright, not that people were living there. We didn't see anyone in the village, nor did we hear any sound."

The conversation between the two confused each other. It seemed that they went to a completely different village, but both of them were sure that they went to Fengmen Village.

The discussion reached a deadlock, and the two sat in the meeting room in silence. Obviously, they needed time to digest the information they had received. Seeing different scenes in the same place made the already mysterious Fengmen Village even more weird.

Thinking of the bizarre deaths of the two service personnel, Du Qiang couldn't help but take a deep breath. He struggled for a long time, and finally mustered up the courage to ask Chen Shu: "Team Leader Chen, do you think that Fengmen Village is really like the legend says, that once a living person enters, he can't get out?"

Chen Shu frowned, but soon shook his head: "I also entered Fengmen Village, but am I not sitting here peacefully now? Don't scare yourself, there must be a reason for this, but we just haven't found the answer yet. Could it be that the Fengmen Village we see during the day is different from the one we see at night? There is absolutely no scientific basis for this..."

Both Chen Shu and Du Qiang were puzzled by the information they had learned so far. This discussion did not produce any results, so Chen Shu had to return to the Security Department to report. Since the lives of service personnel were involved, the nature of this case became very serious. Both the Security Department and the Service Department needed to conduct on-site investigations, and before the results of the investigation came out, they had to keep it absolutely confidential.

After Chen Shu returned to the Security Department, he went to Feng Tianming's office immediately and reported in detail his experience in Fengmen Village and the strange remarks he heard from Du Qiang.

"What? Are you saying that the Fengmen Village seen during the day and at night is completely different?" Feng Tianming stared at Chen Shu with wide eyes, obviously finding this statement unbelievable. (End of this chapter)
