Chapter 440: Flowers with Wang Chaoyun
When comforting friends who have been heartbroken, I often hear this sentence: There is always fish in water.
If we break up, then we break up. Aren’t there other wonderful people in the world?
Later I learned that this was a line from Su Shi's "Dielianhua".
The willow fluff on the branches is blown away, and there is always fragrant grass in the world, which has become a famous line that is widely recited.
This poem is related to Chaoyun. When Su Shi reads this poem again, he may think of the day when he first met Chaoyun.
"Chao Yun, whose original surname is Wang, and whose courtesy name is Zixia, is from Qiantang."
"In the seventh year of Xining, when Su Shi was serving as the magistrate of Hangzhou, she was admitted to the Su family. She was only twelve years old at that time."
"When Chaoyun grew up, she was beautiful and intelligent, the best among her peers."
"You have a naturally fair complexion, so you don't need to use lotion."
"Two small lips, always bright red and juicy."
"She was graceful and elegant, and her figure was slender. Even when she was over 30, Su Shi still praised her."
"I often complain about my bare face getting stained by powder, but my lips never fade after I wash off my makeup."
"She is not only naturally beautiful, but also lively and enthusiastic. She is an outgoing, smart and optimistic girl."
"Her temperament and personality are the most appealing to Su Shi."
"At first, Chao Yun didn't have the status of a concubine yet, she was just a maid."
"When he was exiled to Huangzhou, Chaoyun was only nineteen years old."
"Su Shi had a lot of free time and suffered from loneliness, so the two of them had many opportunities to get close to each other, and their relationship naturally became close."
"Su Shi's close friends also knew the beauty beside him."
"In the sixth year of Yuanfeng, Chaoyun gave birth to a child for Su Shi."
"Su Shi was already 48 years old at the time, so he was very happy to have a son in his old age."
"Su Shi named this illegitimate child Dun, and his nickname Gan'er."
"Dun means to escape. It is obvious that Su Shi was willing to escape from the world at this time."
"This child looks very much like his father, especially his forehead."
"It is human nature for Su Shi to love this young son he got in times of hardship."
"Chao Yun gave birth to a son, and she has gained her position in the Su family."
"To be sent away from the throne is to be promoted to a concubine, no longer an ordinary maid."
"In the seventh year of Yuanfeng, Emperor Shenzong of Song Dynasty revived Su Shi because of his talent. Su Shi accepted the order and left Huangzhou where he had stayed for four years with his family."
"However, Su Shi and his family's journey along the Yangtze River happened to be in the hottest weather in June and July."
"The sun was beating down the boat tent, the water was steaming, and it was hot. Living in this small cabin for two months, how could I not get sick?"
"The first to fall ill was Madam Wang, and then Su Shi himself, whose sores relapsed."
"The last one was Dun'er. This poor little boy was not even ten months old. He died of illness due to the combination of humidity and heat."
"Losing a son in old age is one of the greatest sufferings in life, and Su Shi mourned deeply."
"I can only blame myself for my own evil deeds, which have caused this child to fail to grow up."
"I personally carried him to Jinling to bury him. When I returned empty-handed, I couldn't help crying all the way."
"Chao Yun, the young mother who lost her beloved son, spent the whole day and night lying on her bed in agony."
"Dun'er is her only life, and she keeps saying that she wants to go with this child."
"Suddenly, the breasts were filled with milk and overflowed, soaking the bed."
"The little clothes that Dun'er wore were still hanging on the hanger. It was heartbreaking to see."
"Su Shi is very strange. He has long known that life is just a dream."
"Why is it that even now, I still can't get over it, and can't get rid of the gnawing pain in my heart at all?"
“Just as you have stored up a mountain of medicines on weekdays, when you are sick, you still feel that there is no medicine to cure it.”
"Let the sharp blade of love cut the old man's liver and intestines."
Chen Yuanyuan: Chaoyun was Su Shi's confidante, favorite concubine, and a woman as poetic and picturesque as a painting.
During the Xining period, Su Shi worked in Hangzhou.
A 12-year-old girl came into Su Shi's sight. She was the maid that his wife had just bought.
Everyone knew that Su Shi was a talented man, and they learned that the girl had no name.
After a little thought, Su Shi gave the girl a name, Chao Yun.
Soon, the emperor issued a transfer order and Su Shi was transferred to Mizhou.
Mizhou is in present-day Shandong, and Su Shi lived a good life here.
But there was always a fire in Su Shi's heart.
Although he is nearly forty years old, the ambition to build the country and maintain its security has always been on his mind.
One day, full of passion, he took a group of people out hunting.
He imagined himself as Feng Tang of the Han Dynasty, drawing his bow like the moon and fighting against foreign enemies.
Chaoyun saw Su Shi's talent and ambition.
There is a story about Chao Yun recorded in "Dongpo Notes".
One day, Su Shi retired from court and returned home. He had just finished his meal. He touched his stomach and walked very slowly.
Seeing the maids standing by, she became interested and asked what was in my stomach.
One maid said they were all articles, and the other maid said they were all wisdom.
Although he was praising himself for his cleverness and intelligence, Su Shi still shook his head and disagreed with this answer.
When she arrived at Chaoyun, she said to the scholar, "You are full of inappropriate things."
As soon as he finished speaking, Su Shi smiled, which meant that he hit the point.
The emperor was determined to reform the country, and Wang Anshi was full of confidence.
But Su Shi wrote a letter to discuss the drawbacks of the new law, which was really inappropriate.
Su Shi looked at Chaoyun carefully. Although she was a young girl, she was very knowledgeable.
Because of the Wudai Poetry Case, Su Shi was thrown into prison.
After nearly three months in jail, he was finally released.
However, the imperial court demoted him to Huangzhou.
Su Shi came here with his whole family, including Chao Yun.
Although he held an official position, he had no real power. What was even more sad was that even eating became a problem.
Wearing his scholar's robe, Su Shi went to the fields to farm, worked hard and had enough food and clothing.
It was also in Huangzhou that Chao Yun officially became Su Shi's concubine from a maid.
In the third year of coming to Huangzhou, Chaoyun gave birth to Su Shi's youngest son, named Su Dun.
Su Shi was so happy. In those dark years, the newborn child brought him so much joy.
On the third day after the baby is born, a bathing ceremony is held for the child, and relatives and friends give the child their blessings.
My children should also have what other children have.
"Chao Yun is smart, considerate, and a very likable girl."
"One day, Su Shi returned home after retiring from court. According to his regimen, he walked slowly around the room, touching his abdomen."
"There were servants beside him. He suddenly pointed at his big belly and asked them, "Tell me what's hidden in it?"
"One maid said it was all writing, another maid said it was all knowledge."
"The master shook his head in disapproval, and Chaoyun said that the scholar had a belly full of inappropriate thoughts."
"Su Shi burst into laughter. He is indeed a confidante."
"Su Shi was summoned back from Hangzhou when he was fifty-six years old. He envied Bai Juyi's leisurely life very much."
"Bai Jutian is seventy-five years old. If he can retire now, he will have another twenty years of leisure."
"In this beautiful fantasy, Su Shi has one more thing that can rival Letian, and that is Chao Yun."
"In the eighth year of Yuanyou, Su Shi's second wife, Wang, died of illness in the capital at the age of 46."
"On the early morning of the tenth day after Mrs. Wang's death, Su Shi was going to the morning court."
"It was still early, so according to his habit, he took a nap on the clean couch, but unexpectedly he had returned to his old house in Mei County."
"I walked around the vegetable garden behind the house, then turned back to sit in the south pavilion and saw a few farmhands carrying soil to fill the small pond."
"Two radish roots were found in the soil they dug up, and the farmers happily munched on them."
"Su Shi picked up his pen and wanted to write an article."
"I woke up suddenly and realized it was just a dream."
"He has nothing else to think about - this empty old man has only Chaoyun left to accompany him as he grows old."
"After Cheoljong ascended the throne, he had a grudge against his former teacher."
"Su Shi was once again envied by the small group and was exiled to Huizhou."
"As a concubine, I am a subordinate of the rich and powerful. I have no obligation to share the hardships with my master. Moreover, this trip is to the poisonous land of the southern barbarians."
"So, Su Shi wanted to open the pavilion to release the prostitutes and arrange a place for them to stay."
"Only Chao Yun, she was determined not to abandon the master of the family in this difficult time."
"Especially since Madam Wang has passed away, how can this lonely old man not have a woman to take care of his daily life and diet?"
"So, she enthusiastically and boldly expressed her determination to accompany Su Shi on his journey south."
"Su Shi was deeply moved by this spirit and enthusiasm."
"The broken Su family lived in Huizhou and was invaded by malaria. Chaoyun resolutely took on the responsibility of a housewife."
"She is responsible for taking care of the sixty-year-old man's daily life."
"There are constant guests for her to take care of."
"The tight financial situation depends on her arrangement and coordination."
"She entered the residence of the then Hangzhou Tongpan at the age of twelve. Over the past twenty years, she has witnessed the rise and fall, honor and disgrace of the Su family." "She is a child who grew up in the Su family and shared all their joys and sorrows. "
"The death of her biological son has made her half dead mentally."
"When she followed her master from the sad Jinling City to Sishang, she got a brief opportunity."
"I started to learn Buddhism, and used the broad and clear examples of Buddhism to heal her psychological trauma."
"The Su family's upbringing and the lord's love and care made her firmly believe that she is a member of the Su family."
"Regardless of whether she had status or position, she was willing to accept any disaster or misfortune and bravely competed to share it."
Liu Rushi: This is Su Shi’s most moving poem. His concubine Chao Yun cried every time she sang it.
Su Shi held a baptism ceremony for his child and even wrote a special poem called "Baptism Poem".
Everyone wants to be smart, and I was mistaken for my whole life by being smart.
I hope that the children are foolish and lucrative, and there is no disaster and no trouble to the public.
Everyone hopes that their children will be smart, but my intelligence has ruined my life.
I only hope he is a little more stupid, so that he can become an official without any trouble.
The love of the parents is far-reaching.
Su Shi's beloved son only hopes that he will be safe and sound, without any disasters.
However, in this world, there are always some fathers and sons, mothers and sons, whose love is too shallow.
Su Dun died of illness when he was just ten months old.
The most painful thing in the world is to see the young die before the old.
The death of the child was a great blow to Su Shi, and even more so to Chao Yun.
Chaoyun lay in bed all day, in a trance. Su Shi felt heartbroken when he heard Chaoyun's crying.
After that, they never had any children.
Huangzhou was not the end of Su Shi's official career, but it became a stepping stone.
In the eighth year of Yuanfeng, Song Zhezong succeeded to the throne and Empress Dowager Gao took charge of the government.
Empress Dowager Gao always had a good impression of Su Shi. After she took power, she transferred Su Shi back to Tokyo.
Su Shi became the emperor's attendant and was highly trusted.
The capital city is the most prosperous, which is very different from the remote Huangzhou.
Less than a hundred meters from my home, there are silk shops and jewelry stores, a bustling scene.
A sudden good life can easily make people lost, but fortunately Chaoyun did not.
Empress Dowager Gao died and the New Party came to power again.
Su Shi was regarded as a member of the old party, and was sent to Huizhou with a letter of demotion.
Lingnan is an uncivilized land with a lot of miasma and bad climate. It is a truly miserable place.
In order not to implicate his children, Su Shi decided to take only his son Su Guo to Huizhou.
Concubines had no obligation to share hardships with their master, so Su Shi made arrangements for the concubines one by one and sent them away.
Only Chao Yun resolutely decided to accompany Su Shi to the wild Huizhou.
She was unwilling to abandon Su Shi in this time of trouble.
At this time, Su Shi was 57 years old and Chao Yun was 31 years old.
Su Shi was so moved. In his old age, someone was willing to accompany him through his wanderings. Who wouldn't be grateful?
Su Shi thought of Bai Juyi's concubine, Xiaoman.
When Bai Juyi was old and seriously ill, he sent his concubines Xiao Man and Fan Su away.
But now, Chaoyun never left him, and Su Shi felt that he was luckier than Bai Juyi.
"I followed my lord on a long journey to Huizhou, and saw my stubborn lord."
"Although she never showed signs of depression, her family's current situation was no longer what it used to be, and when she saw it in her smart eyes, she felt unbearably sad."
"Zhao Yun, who has always been lively, optimistic and cheerful, has gradually become sentimental."
"In the autumn of the second year after I came to Huizhou, the leaves outside were falling and the scenery was desolate."
"Su Shi and Chao Yun were sitting together, feeling depressed, so he ordered wine and asked her to sing a song."
"Chao Yun stood up and tried to sing, but he couldn't sing a single word and just stood there in a daze."
"Su Shi came over and asked her what was wrong, but she lowered her head and cried like rain."
"Su Shi comforted her in every possible way and asked her what was wrong."
"What I cannot sing are the two lines about the willow fluff on the branches being blown away and the fragrant grass being everywhere in the world."
"Su Shi pretended to laugh, he was sad about autumn, why are you sad about spring?"
"Su Shi had a bad feeling in his heart, and later recalled that this was a sign of Chao Yun's death."
"From then on, Su Shi no longer listened to or sang this song."
"On Chaoyun's birthday, Su Shi specially invited several acquaintances to hold a party to celebrate for her."
"This kind of writing is mostly used in palace banquets, or at least in official banquets."
"In Huizhou life, there is no such a big scene."
"Su Shi wrote this just to express his love for Chao Yun."
"On ordinary days, Old Su has friends to hang out with, and Little Su has schoolwork to do."
"There is only Chaoyun, all alone, feeling very lonely."
"She never received proper education and was illiterate."
"Since I started learning Buddhism, I have been diligently practicing in order to recite the sutras."
"After a few years, I not only mastered literature and science, but also had a rough understanding of the essence of Buddhism."
"Since coming to Huizhou, she has also learned to write."
"When Su Shi wrote to his friend, he also specifically mentioned that Chaoyun had learned calligraphy after they parted, and there were quite a few words about regular script."
"Reciting sutras and pond reading were two of the things she did to relieve her worries and boredom in Huizhou."
"It was as if God wanted to make Su Shi's punishment heavier by sending misfortune to the frail Chao Yun."
"In the scorching heat of that backward region, Chao Yun unfortunately contracted an epidemic that was highly contagious."
"Huizhou is short of doctors and medicine, so there is no hope of saving it."
"On the fifth day of July, the plague took her life at the age of thirty-four."
"Su Shi burst into tears, thinking that she must have owed him something in her past life."
"I have already paid too much in this life, and I cannot create a relationship in the next life."
"According to Chaoyun's will, she was buried in the pine forest on the hillside by the lake, southeast of Fenghu Qichan Temple."
"Two months after Chao Yun's death, Su Shi went to the White Crane Peak where he had just moved to, in preparation for the Double Ninth Festival."
"The chrysanthemums have not yet bloomed. Looking from the mountain, all you can see is a vast expanse of yellow grass, waving in the wind."
"This lonely old man is obsessed with Chaoyun, but he doesn't dare to go to Fenghu Cemetery."
Li Shishi: Su Shi mourned Chao Yun and wrote a poem about plum blossoms, the last line of which became a classic.
In Huizhou, Chaoyun often sang lyrics for Su Shi, the most famous of which was "Dielianhua".
The flowers have faded and are red, green and apricots are small. When the swallows are flying, the green water is surrounded by people.
There are few willow trees blowing on the branches, and there are no fragrant grasses anywhere in the world.
The swing in the wall is outside the wall, the pedestrians outside the wall, and the beautiful lady in the wall laughs.
Laughing gradually fell silent, but passionate but was ruthlessly annoyed.
In late spring, the flowers are falling and the swallows are flying.
The catkins on the branches embarked on a drifting life, and when the wind blew, they scattered to the ends of the earth.
Every time Chao Yun sang the part about the willow fluff on the branches being blown away, she would burst into tears and could not sing any more.
The catkins floating on the willow trees are very much like his own wandering life, and also very much like Su Shi's exiled life.
Looking at the crying Chao Yun, Su Shi forced himself to be humorous: I am sad about autumn, why are you sad about spring?
Perhaps, this is a harbinger of tragedy.
Because of the plague, Chao Yun's life died in Huizhou, and Su Shi was extremely sad.
Looking back on the past, they endured the cold wind of Huangzhou together, endured the pain of their child's death together, and weathered the miasma of Huizhou together.
In those dark times, Chaoyun always brought him warmth.
She understood his inappropriateness. She was Su Shi's lover and also his close friend.
In one's life, meeting love is not rare, what is rare is meeting someone who understands you.
Su Shi buried her next to a Zen temple in Huizhou, wrote an epitaph for her, and also wrote many poems expressing his longing for her.
Two months after Chaoyun passed away, the Double Ninth Festival is here again.
At that time, Su Shi climbed the mountain alone, and there was no one to accompany him. That smart and lovely woman was really gone.
After Chao Yun passed away, Su Shi never listened to "Dielianhua" again, and he didn't even have the courage to go to Chao Yun's tomb.
Some people say that Su Shi was particularly unlucky. Although he was extremely talented, he ended up wandering all his life.
Some people say that Su Shi was very lucky. No matter how difficult the time was, there was always someone who sincerely accompanied him and gave him comfort.
The four happiest things in life: someone believes in you, someone loves you, someone helps you, and someone understands you!
No matter when we meet, only sincerity can accompany us;
No matter how far or near friends are, warmth comes from understanding!
Fortunately, Su Shi had all four of these things.
There is no smooth road in a person's life.
As long as there is someone who is always with you and never leaves you, it is a great happiness.
The pains along the way will also turn into sweet sugar.
I wish you could also win the heart of one person, never leave him, and stay with him for life. (End of this chapter)
