“After the completion of the Kariba Reservoir, we built a new reservoir in the Kaholabasa area, more than 400 kilometers downstream.
The reservoir has a total storage capacity of 630 billion cubic meters. The dam site is located at the narrowest point of the 46km-long, "V"-shaped Caborra Bassa Canyon, with the two banks nearly vertical.
The normal water storage level of the reservoir is 326m, and the reservoir area is 2700 square kilometers.
The minimum operating water level is 295m, and the effective storage capacity is 520 billion cubic meters, which can be adjusted annually.
The maximum dam height of this reservoir is 163.5m, the arch dam crest elevation is 331m, the dam crest arc length is 303m, the top thickness is 4m, and the bottom thickness is 23m.
The bedrock of the dam site is fine coarse-crystalline perilla granite-like granite-like gneiss with slight schistosity. There are thin lamprophyre dikes and gabbro dikes in a few locations.
The bedrock is dense and has good lithology. Except for a few parts, it generally has weak water permeability and high elastic modulus.
Because the geological conditions of this reservoir are good, we adopted a double-curved arch dam. Of course, during construction, we specially set up a water dissipation plan to avoid the impact of long-term flood discharge on the dam foundation.
The dam pouring also adopted the engineering method of cooling while pouring that was used before for the Kariba Dam.
During the pouring process, our staff also eliminated many difficulties and summarized many engineering parameters.
For example: in order to ensure that the newly poured concrete is not affected by excavation and blasting, a distance of more than 15m should be maintained between the edge of the pouring block and the rock excavation surface.
During the pouring process, the pouring on both sides is roughly maintained symmetrically. The thickness of the pouring layer is 1.25m at the dam foundation and 2.5m above.
The pouring temperature is limited to below 35°C; if it exceeds, cooling measures must be taken.
There are serpentine cooling pipes buried in the dam body, and the pouring time of the second layer must be staggered by at least 2 hours, etc.
Mastering these engineering parameters is a useful exploration for us to enrich dam construction technology, accumulate successful experience, and improve the construction discipline.
The main buildings of the hub include a double-curved arch dam and an underground powerhouse on the left and right banks.
The project is constructed in two phases. The first phase mainly involves the construction of the arch dam and the right bank underground powerhouse, as well as the corresponding power transmission and transformation projects;
The second phase of the project includes the Left Bank underground factory buildings and corresponding power transmission and living service facilities.
In August this year, the first phase of the reservoir project was successfully completed, and the construction of the second phase of the project started at a later date.
After the completion of the first phase, the dam has officially entered the water storage stage.
A total of 199.6 million cubic meters of concrete was poured into the dam at a total cost of 39.5 billion yuan (3950 million pounds). "
