Chapter 742 Sin Yiu-man's Background
Nathan Eliahu Burke was born in 1890 into a Polish Jewish rabbi family; his grandfather was the head of the Warsaw Jewish Theological Seminary.
In 1915, during the period when Poland was occupied by Russia, Germany and Austria-Hungary, an anti-Semitic wave swept across Poland under the deliberate guidance of Russia. A large number of Jews fled Poland, and Nathan and his brother fled to London.
During his time in London, he worked for the London branch of the Rothschild family's Vienna branch and was highly regarded. Over five years, he was promoted repeatedly. The Rothschild family extended an olive branch to him to join their core in Vienna, but he did not accept it. Instead, he embarked on another journey to New York. His brother went to Vienna instead, and in 1922, they had a son, Joseph Burke.
Having personally experienced the persecution of Jews, Nathan's faith shifted from Orthodox Judaism to pragmatism, leading him to join the Zionist circle and become an important figure in the Zionist organization. His trip to New York was at the organization's behest—to use his considerable financial skills to raise funds for the organization.
In 1921, Nathan became a U.S. citizen and founded Berkshire Rothschild Investment Company on Wall Street. Using his remarkable financial skills, he quickly amassed a fortune and became one of the main sponsors of the Haganah, a Zionist militia.
In 1929, he made a fortune shorting US stocks, using half of the profits to fund European Jewish refugees and the other half to purchase weapons and equipment for Haganah.
In August of that year, Palestinian riots broke out due to the dispute over the ownership of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Arab mobs attacked Jewish communities, and massacres occurred in places such as Hebron and Safid. As the official government, Britain favored the Arabs and restricted Jewish immigration and arms possession, which resulted in Haganah not having enough manpower and weapons to organize Jews for effective defense.
In the aftermath of the riots, Zionist organizations believed it was necessary to accelerate armament, purchase large quantities of weapons, recruit adults with military training from around the world, and call on Jewish youth to join their local armies. They pledged that once they returned from their battles, they would hear the call to arms and use their knowledge to fight for the establishment of a Jewish state.
At that time, the situation in Europe was becoming increasingly tense, and a major war was imminent. The anti-Semitic wave was also intensifying. It was difficult for Jews to purchase weapons in large quantities. They could only smuggle rifles and pistols from Czechoslovakia and Poland through underground channels. Not only were the quantities small, but it was also difficult to obtain other equipment.
In desperation, the Zionist organization turned its attention to China, establishing arms transport hubs in Hong Kong and scavenging goods from the mainland's black market. They weren't buying domestically made Hanyang rifles or similar low-quality weapons, which they could produce better in their own underground arsenals; instead, they were buying high-quality European imports.
During the period between the 1920s and 1930s, many European arms that had flowed into the black market from mainland China were secretly bought by Jews, who then imported them and resold them abroad, from which some gangs profited handsomely.
As the main sponsor, Nathan not only provided funds but also took charge of setting up a network for the flow of funds and covering up arms transactions. From Hong Kong to Bao'an, through Guangzhou, all the way north to Shanghai, and then connecting to the north, Nathan established Burke & Co. at several key nodes.
Burke & Co. was not only a cover-up, but also operated regular businesses. For example, the Burke & Co. branch in Bao'an has been engaged in agricultural-related trade since its establishment, exporting agricultural products and importing fertilizers.
Nathan not only contributed money but also effort to the Zionist cause. In 1943, he arranged for his nephew Joseph to join the OSS, the predecessor of the CIA, to participate in intelligence work for the Normandy landings. To this day, Joseph remains a member of the CIA.
His own son, Daniel, born in 1925, went to Zurich in 1944 to be in charge of money laundering and fund allocation for the Zionist organization.
In 1948, Israel was established, and Haganah was renamed the Israel Defense Forces. Nathan did not share in the spoils of victory, nor did he retire gracefully, because Israel was in grave danger, and its demise could happen at any moment.
Israel is penniless in everything – economy, defense, intelligence – and surrounded by wolves, with countless wars awaiting its active or passive participation.
Since World War II, Switzerland, specifically Zurich, has become a central hub for the transfer of assets by wealthy individuals from the US, the Soviet Union, and Europe, and Rothschild Bank is one of the busiest service intermediaries in Zurich.
In 1949, Mossad was established, and Daniel became the head of its European intelligence station, participating in the execution of a highly classified project called Project Adam—Israel needed its own atomic bomb, and the first one would be named Adam.
The development of the atomic bomb, from the theory of nuclear fission to its practical application in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has always involved Jewish participation. Whether it was theoretical research in Germany or physical development in the United States and the Soviet Union, it can be said that Jews were in charge. The Soviet Union, in particular, relied not only on Jewish scientists but also on data from the Manhattan Project secretly provided by Jews.
Israel does not lack the technology to manufacture atomic bombs, but it lacks the political environment, tools, and funds to do so, which Mossad has been working to address.
The atomic bomb was a daunting task, even an impossible one. No one could guarantee that Israel could meet the conditions for building an atomic bomb. In addition to this seemingly hopeless task, Mossad also had to act as a pioneer and lead Israel to climb the technological tree.
Daniel, codenamed Bezalel, is regarded in Jewish tradition as the embodiment of sacred craftsmanship, similar to a "god of technology." His codename reveals that Daniel's main mission revolves around technology. However, he is an intelligence agent who is proficient in finance, not a scientist. All he can do is buy, bribe, and steal.
Daniel now works at Rothschild Bank in Zurich, a bank that has been providing financial channels for money laundering since World War II. As the name suggests, the bank belongs to the Rothschild family, but in reality, the bank has been riddled with holes by intelligence agents.
The bank president, Pierre Dupont, is ostensibly a Swiss banker, but in reality an MI6 agent whose main task is to monitor Soviet financial transactions.
Account manager Anna Muller's ostensible identity is that of an Austrian refugee, but her true identity is that of a Soviet spy. Her main task is to seduce people of great value to the Soviet Union, such as scientists and agents of hostile forces.
Mossad and the CIA cooperated and planted many pawns in the bank. Daniel was the pawn, and he also infiltrated the bank as a pawn.
Inside a small office building, agents from various factions are staging a bizarre scene:
Mossad and the CIA transported South African blood diamonds and Nazi gold through banks, with one route transiting through Hong Kong before smuggling them to Taiwan, mainland China, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, where they were used as intelligence funds for various purposes.
The CIA, under the guise of charitable funds, funded Radio Free Europe through banks to cover up the funding of anti-communist agents in Eastern Europe.
The Soviet Union laundered the money by selling and mortgaging "stolen" state-owned artworks through banks, as well as large amounts of gold, artworks, and foreign exchange looted from Germany. Some of the funds were then transferred to agents deployed around the world, while others were deposited into shadow accounts. Some of these accounts were nominally owned by Stalin personally, but were more likely state assets.
Whether it was the Soviet Union, the CIA, or Mossad, funds were transferred to Hong Kong, the intelligence hub of Asia. These funds involved local Hong Kong triads, most of which participated in international intelligence warfare with or without their knowledge.
Despite his seemingly carefree and nonchalant demeanor, Griffith was still unable to sleep in the early hours of the morning. He sat on the balcony, smoking a cigar, gazing at the sky, and reflecting on the chaotic situation in Hong Kong.
He was exhausted. Intelligence work wasn't like killing enemies on the battlefield; you could just kill them when you saw them. The intelligence front was full of exploitation and being exploited. Enemies weren't meant to be physically eliminated. Often, the value of enemy agents far outweighed the benefits of directly eliminating them.
Moreover, Great Britain's national strength is no longer what it used to be. The illusion of the British Empire is only for the common people. Those of us who are fighting on the front lines of intelligence know all too well that Great Britain is at its most dangerous moment. If we are not careful, Great Britain will be reduced to a second- or even third-rate country.
The cigar thread shortened, and Griffith's brow furrowed deeper and deeper, until his eyebrows were a pound wide.
After a long while, as the first rays of dawn appeared in the east, he muttered, "Adam, do you even know that your surname is Burke?"
British intelligence agencies had already thoroughly investigated Sin Yiu-man, uncovering his background and life story, including the fact that his first fortune came from London. However, they had not yet traced the specific source of the £50, but after tracing its origins, there was ample reason to suspect that the money came from counterfeit German banknotes.
Once counterfeit banknotes are discovered, further investigation becomes impossible. During the Soviet-American occupation of Germany, the Soviet Union and the United States divided up a large amount of German wealth. Britain had long suspected that the Soviet Union and the United States held a considerable amount of counterfeit pounds and even possessed the technology to print them. Britain's hasty decision to abolish old banknotes and issue new ones was primarily out of vigilance against the Soviet Union and the United States.
Most of Sin Yiu-man's subsequent actions were observed by British intelligence agencies. Only those that were carried out in secrecy from the beginning and had no connection with others were kept secret, such as Mosquito and the armed forces such as Falcon and Camel deployed in the Middle East that had broken away from the Gold Coast.
Needless to say, in terms of business, he had his eye on the vast majority of people. Little Griffiths had a pretty good grasp of how much wealth Sin Yiu-man possessed. He had designs on Sin Yiu-man, not just some low-tech way to plunder his wealth, but to cultivate him into a money bag for the British intelligence agency.
On a private level, Little Griffiths was actually a shareholder of the Golden Seasons Trading Company, a fact that Sin Yiu-man might not have known.
This is one of the key reasons why Sin Yiu-man has never encountered any trouble from the British authorities.
Greenwich, a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, is located on the Long Island Sound near the New York State border and is considered a residential satellite town of New York City.
Greenwich is the wealthiest town in Connecticut, and one of the wealthiest towns in the United States. It is known as the "town of manor houses" due to its enormous mansions.
Greenwich is a gathering place for old money families outside Westchester County, and many American families that have been wealthy for more than two generations live here.
In a corner of town stands Burke Estate, which is Nathan's residence.
Nathan was having dinner alone in the dining room. He had not remarried since the death of his wife, Daniel's mother.
Of course, he has no shortage of women to satisfy his physical needs and relieve his loneliness. He owns many properties in Manhattan, some of which are occupied by his lovers, and he will go there when needed.
He deeply loved his wife and would not allow other women into the estate where he and his wife lived.
Nathan is eating potato dumplings with sauerkraut soup, a memory from Poland, and most of his meals continue to have a Polish flavor.
His housekeeper, Zhao Yage, stood beside him, giving him a report.
"Young Master Adam flew to Los Angeles this morning, apparently to handle matters related to Jorge Guinness's agency. Tonight he'll be going to Chaplin's estate at 10831 Summit Boulevard to attend..."
Nathan chuckled, "Jacob, you don't need to hide it. I've known about Adam's situation for a long time, haven't I?"
Zhao Yage smiled slightly, "Young Master Adam is a romantic."
"He himself is amorous, but he may not necessarily like a father who is also amorous." (End of Chapter)
