Desert Eagle Suletan Khan
Chapter 1368 Marching into the Frozen Land
Mount your horse,
Carry the quiver on your back,
No matter how far the journey,
The will of the Eternal Heaven must also be conveyed.
Ah ho yi.
The pristine glacier,
A bright blue sky.
Such a vast territory,
It exudes the fragrance of green grass.
Ah ho yi.
The blessings of the Eternal Heaven
The land of the Mongols.
Following Lotus Khan,
Warriors fought and bled on the battlefield.
Ah ho yi.
Wherever the military flag went,
Warriors fought and bled on the battlefield.
Governor Orros of David's Kingdom sat astride a magnificent black horse, humming a cheerful tune. The song was impromptu; whether it sounded good or bad didn't matter, what mattered was his good mood!
After leaving several hundred men to garrison Okhotsk Fortress, he still had 10,000 troops. Such a large army was virtually invincible along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. They had already entered the Kolyma River basin, but had not seen a single enemy. It seemed that they were terrified by his formidable military might. How could he not be proud!
"General, His Highness the King of Chu has given us a military order." Just as I was feeling happy, a personal guard delivered the order from the King of Chu, Bao Yin: "You do not need to come to Yakutsk to meet me. Just head north and west and capture all the cities to the east and north of Yakutsk."
"Hehe~ Your Highness and I are thinking the same thing!" After reading the military order, Orros laughed and ordered the entire army to accelerate towards Lower Kolymsk. Located on the left bank of the lower Kama River, Lower Kolymsk was more of a village than a castle. After Tsarist Russia invaded the Kolyma River (Dog River) in 1640, it established Middle Kolymsk in 1643, Lower Kolymsk the following year, and Upper Kolymsk in 1647, completely controlling this river basin.
This area, located within the Arctic Circle, had a harsh living environment and was used by the Tsarist Russian government to exile convicts. At that time, the total population was only a few thousand. Tsarist Russia was interested in this area mainly because it wanted to obtain walrus ivory from the Chukchi Peninsula. At that time, walrus ivory was very valuable; one Russian pound was equivalent to a medium-quality sable pelt, and it was a hot commodity on the international market. To this end, the Siberian Ministry ordered the Yakutsk Governor to send people to Chukchi to "collect sable pelts and walrus ivory to increase the national treasury's revenue."
However, obtaining walrus ivory was not easy, as they faced fierce resistance from the local indigenous people, primarily the Chukchi.
The name "Chukchi" was given by the Russians, meaning "reindeer herders." They belonged to the Tungusic race (a branch of the northern Mongoloid race) and originally lived in the Outer Khingan Mountains. They gradually migrated north, assimilating and merging with the local indigenous population, eventually forming the Chukchi people as we know them today. Constrained by the harsh natural environment, their total population at that time was only about nine thousand. Although small in number, they were all brave and skilled warriors. Ancient Chinese texts referred to them as the "Kingdom of Yakshas," describing them as having "blue faces and fangs, short hair and tattooed bodies," and even saying, "No more than ten thousand Yakshas, and you cannot defeat them if you have more than ten thousand," demonstrating the fear and awe felt towards this people.
They also held themselves in high esteem, believing that other nearby peoples were far inferior to them, calling themselves "Lolaveti," meaning "real people." This sense of superiority stemmed from their perceived higher level of civilization. While the Inuit people at the same latitude were still in the hunter-gatherer era, they had already entered the nomadic stage, living by herding reindeer and whaling, and residing in "Yaranga," mobile tents made of reindeer hides. Their level of civilization was far superior to that of other indigenous tribes on the Kamchatka Peninsula, such as the Itermen, Koryak, Even, Aleutians, and Klek. They even regarded Russians as "second-class beings."
How could such a proud people allow themselves to be enslaved by the Russians? In 1641, when the infamous Cossack captain Yelastov led his men into the Kolyma River basin, the brave Chukchi people clashed fiercely with them. To obtain walrus ivory from the Chukchi region, the Cossack leader Dezhnev built Anadyrsk Fortress along the Anadyr River. Subsequently, Tsarist Russia used this fortress as a base to launch several campaigns against the Chukchi, all of which failed. The brave Chukchi retaliated in kind, gathering hundreds of soldiers in 1653 to besiege Nizhny Kolymsk Fortress. They cut off the Cossacks' firewood and water, leaving the fortress's Cossacks starving and without food.
Seeing how difficult the local indigenous people were to deal with, the Tsarist Russian government decided to adopt a two-pronged approach: military force and peaceful bribery. They sent envoys to the local tribes with gifts, using deception and bribery to persuade them to become Russian citizens. However, the local tribes had already witnessed the brutality of the colonizers over the years, and not only did the Chukchi refuse to submit, but the Itermen, Koryak, Even, Aleutian, and Krek peoples of the Kamchatka Peninsula also refused to submit. This infuriated Vladimir Atlasov, the governor of Anadersk Fortress, but he was powerless to do anything about it.
However, the governor quickly forgot his anger towards the natives, as an even bigger problem was looming over him: the guards had arrived! Governor Orros of Nuningi led his warriors into this vast frozen land within the Arctic Circle.
In Lower Kolymsk, he encountered resistance from Mirovich, a man of fifty, and his fifty-three Cossacks. Such negligible resistance naturally did not catch Orlos's attention. He ordered his deputy commander, Shakdur, to lead two thousand men to attack, and the small village was captured in just one hour. To avoid further trouble, he ordered that any Russians who dared to resist be dealt with ruthlessly, beheading all adult Russian men in Lower Kolymsk and selling the women and children into slavery to nearby indigenous tribes.
The brutal killings had a great effect; not a single Russian dared to block the road from Nizhny Kolymsk to Anadersk.
"No enemy sightings yet?" Orros asked disdainfully, glancing at the empty Russian winter camp, the third empty camp they had encountered along the way.
"The Russian devils, fearing the commander's might, have long since fled. How could there be anyone here?" Jambi, the commander of Ningguta, replied with a sneer, as if to say: Don't ask questions you already know the answer to. With the example of Koremske Fortress, the Russian devils aren't stupid. Would they just stay in the winter camp and let us chop them down?
"Heh," Orros shrugged and chuckled, "It's freezing cold, let the soldiers set up camp and rest. Send out more sentries, be on high alert, hmm, sharpen the weapons, feed the horses well, and be wary of an attack from the enemy at Anadersk Fortress!"
Once the military order was given, the battle-hardened guards methodically set up camp and sentry posts, carefully guarding against a Russian raid. Unexpectedly, instead of Russians, they were greeted by six uninvited guests: Jumin, the leader of the Chukchi; Kuichi, the leader of the Izermen; Lorawit, the leader of the Koryak; Xiongtuku, the leader of the Even; Absso, the leader of the Alyut; and Greg, the leader of the Kelek, arrived together.
