Chapter 71 The Bid for the White Jade Guanyin

Early in the morning, the first rays of sunlight shone through the old glass onto Yu Dawei, not only dazzling his eyes but also sending a warm sensation through his abdomen.

Yu Dawei opened his eyes, his heart pounding so hard he hadn't quite recovered yet. His gaze was hazy and confused. He seemed to have had a nightmare, dreaming that the old man was dead, his right hand gripping his wrist tightly, staring at him without saying a word, as if he wanted to say something but couldn't utter a sound.

He turned his head and realized that the dream was just a dream. The old man was lying quietly at the end of the kang (a heated brick bed), snoring softly from his nose.

"Cluck, cluck." He heard the chicks quacking in the yard and the ducks quacking, which sounded like they were laughing at him from under the window for being in bed.

He didn't dare disturb his father. He tiptoed off the kang (a heated brick bed), dressed himself, and then went to the outer room to get something to eat.

There are some leftovers from yesterday, which can be easily heated up.

After closing the outer door, Yu Dawei went to the dish rack and opened it. He found that there wasn't much soy sauce and vinegar left. After thinking for a moment, he heated up the food first, then took the soy sauce and vinegar and left the house to buy them at the village store.

If I go myself, it will save my mom from having to make another trip.

"Hey? Dawei's back. You've been so busy every day." Yu Dazhi, who runs a small shop in the village, was fiddling with his newly bought calculator. This thing is a high-tech product, and only his family in the surrounding area has one. Other families probably can't afford it.

When Yu Dazhi saw Yu Dawei arrive, he pushed the calculator in front of the cabinet like a precious treasure: "Look, do you know what this is?"

Yu Dawei was taken aback. It wasn't that he hadn't seen this thing before, but what was so great about a broken calculator?

Mr. Liang, the owner of the parts store in town, and Duan Dahai, the garbage collector, both have them!

"I bet you've never seen one of these before, working in town. This thing is way better than an abacus; you can get the result with just a couple of presses." Yu Dazhi grinned and began demonstrating to Yu Dawei: 3+6+2+4...

"Which construction site in town does Dawei work on?" someone asked from the side.

Yu Dawei turned around and found that there were two or three other people sitting on the benches against the north wall chatting. One was an elder from the Tian family, one was from the Zhang family, and the other was an elder from the Yu family.

"Uncles, everyone's here. What can I do? Just manual labor, I guess." Yu Dawei handed two empty bags to Yu Dazhi, told him to buy soy sauce and vinegar, and then turned around with a silly smile. "Farming doesn't really make much money these days. If I don't go to town to earn some pocket money, even buying milk powder for my kids will be a problem."

The elderly people nodded in agreement. In recent years, it has become popular to give children formula after weaning, which is quite different from how they raised children back then. They also heard that good formula sold in the city is indeed not cheap.

"Dawei, you've really matured. You're so different from your impulsive self before." An elderly man with bright eyes, thick eyebrows, and a square face smiled with satisfaction.

"Hehe, Uncle Twelfth, don't flatter me, I can't take praise." After saying that, Yu Dawei thought of the white jade Guanyin again and then said, "I heard that someone came to the Wang family a few days ago, saying that he wanted to buy their antiques? I didn't know about this before, I just heard about it when I came back to the village."

"That's right. Wang Duoshui amassed quite a few things over the years. I know of at least five old items. One year when I went to his house for a banquet, he showed them to me." The old man from the Tian family sat on a chipped stool and suddenly sighed, "What a pity. He was such a capable person, and he's gone just like that. We haven't heard from him since."

"And his eldest son, if he were still alive, he'd be around forty years old now," Old Zhang pondered. "The three of them are all the same, they all value money too much. Take Wang Lao Er for example, that dealer took a fancy to his family's white jade Guanyin and offered ten thousand yuan, but Wang Lao Er refused, otherwise..." Old Zhang was halfway through his sentence when Yu Lao Shi Er secretly nudged him in the lower back. He was a little confused at first, then suddenly realized, and quickly swallowed the rest of his sentence.

"Judging from this, Brother Wang Er has quite an appetite. He didn't even sell it for ten thousand yuan?" Yu Dawei leaned against the cabinet and then grabbed a handful of sunflower seeds from the bag under the window.

While Yu Dazhi was buying soy sauce, he listened to their chatter, secretly glancing at Yu Dawei's hand holding sunflower seeds, but didn't say anything.

There's nothing I can do. I was bullied as a child and it left me with a psychological scar. He's taken everything from me.

That damn lazy bum, all he does is bully me! I'll give you extra soy sauce, it'll make you sick of it!

Yu Dazhi might dare to cheat others, but he wouldn't dare to cheat Dawei. So, this extreme method was the only way to deal with Yu Dawei.

"Hehe, who in the village doesn't know what kind of people the Wang family are? Even your father back then... *slap*!" Old Zhang covered his lips with his hand. His mouth, which never kept its mouth shut, had really gotten him into trouble today. "You, you guys chat, I have something to do, so I'll be leaving first."

Old Zhang was truly filled with lamentation. As he passed by Dawei, he said somewhat resentfully, "Dawei, just pretend you didn't hear what I said earlier. Don't ask your father anything about the White Jade Guanyin. I've never said anything about your father or the White Jade Guanyin either. Anyway, anyway... sigh, I don't know what to say anymore. I'm leaving! I wasn't here. I wasn't here today!"

Yu Dazhi screwed the cap on and glanced curiously at the other two old men.

What's wrong with the White Jade Guanyin? What's the connection between the White Jade Guanyin and Uncle Jiu (Yu Laonian)'s family?
Sitting by the north wall, Old Yu watched Old Zhang leave speechlessly, inwardly cursing his ancestors for eight generations.

Damn it! If you can't speak properly, why don't you just shut up! You can't control your foul mouth.

"Dawei." As Yu Laonian's cousin, he felt it necessary to cover up that incident from the past. "That old Zhang is blind, don't take it to heart. Whether you know about the White Jade Guanyin or not, it won't affect your life. Living a good life is what really matters."

Yu Dazhi also sensed that Dawei's expression wasn't good, so he handed over soy sauce and vinegar: "Uncle Twelfth is right. Things are more open now, and everyone is after money. Don't meddle in the old generation's affairs."

"Okay, I'm leaving now." Yu Dawei picked up two bottles of soy sauce and vinegar, turned around and left the convenience store.

"Ten thousand yuan! Even if a farmer worked himself to the bone, he couldn't earn that much. Wang Ergouzi is a real bastard." Uncle Twelve still felt uneasy.

If the Yu family had pooled their resources back then, they could have afforded Dawei's medical treatment. But in the end, the family split up, and people's hearts were scattered.

"Who says otherwise?" Yu Dazhi was wiping the glass cabinet with a rag when he suddenly froze, then hurriedly opened the door and yelled into the street, "Damn it! Yu Dazhi hasn't paid me yet!"

"I'll never forget your 80 cents. I'm a little short on cash lately, but I'll keep it in mind."

Yu Dazhi smacked his lips, watched the majestic figure leave, let out a long sigh, turned around and went to the cabinet. Like a resentful woman, he carefully wrote down Yu Dawei's debts in his notebook.
