HKMG technology is regarded as a revolutionary advancement in semiconductor manufacturing technology, because the realization of HKMG technology makes it easier to evolve to 20 nanometers and 16 nanometers.

Guided by Moore's Law, the line width of integrated circuits has been shrinking. According to the law, it is basically advancing at a pace of 70% of the original size every two years. For example, it reached 2007 nanometers in 45, 2009 nanometers in 32, and 2011 nanometers in 22. When the industry evolved from 45/40 nanometers downward, due to the immaturity of the 32 nanometer process, the introduction of HKMG to 28 nanometers achieved an important change, skipping 32 nanometers in the middle. Therefore, the 28 nanometer node is very special.
