Chapter 593 Amir

The medical department in the isolation area is mainly divided into three sections: the emergency rescue department, the first inpatient department, and the second inpatient department.

The Emergency Rescue Department is the smallest in size, but its personnel are all elites who directly serve the frontline combat troops. When there is no combat situation, these team members are rotated to the First Inpatient Department to make up for the shortage of medical resources.

The first inpatient ward was of medium size and treated wounded combat personnel, engineers, and volunteers.

The second inpatient department is the largest, occupying two buildings with activity areas at the front and back. Several rows of residential buildings outside the activity areas are also under renovation and will be incorporated into the second inpatient department in the future.

Despite working day and night to catch up, a large number of infected people are still unable to be admitted to the second inpatient ward.

These infected individuals gathered outside the metal protective netting of the quarantine zone, using tents, cardboard, and discarded shipping containers to build temporary shelters, resembling a slum from a distance.

Ling Feiran spent her first day at work on the ninth floor of the second inpatient ward.

The workload isn't heavy, but there's definitely no time to rest. The call button in the duty room rings on average every five minutes. Patients will press the bell whenever they feel unwell, whether they're hungry, thirsty, in pain, itchy, or anything else.

Ling Feiran's job is to meet the needs of patients as much as possible, so that these infected people can receive care and attention in the final moments of their lives, as well as the dignity that they deserve as human beings.

She had originally planned to call Feng Ling during her lunch break, but she got so busy that she couldn't think of a call at all. During her lunch break, she only ate a few bites of her boxed lunch. Even things like going to the toilet required her to discuss with Zhao Xiaolei and Liu Wen to avoid the duty room being empty when the call bell rang.

Ling Feiran couldn't imagine how she would cope with so many patients by herself after Zhao Xiaolei and Liu Wen were transferred away.

At 4 p.m., two volunteers came to hand over the shift.

Liu Wen introduced Ling Feiran to her colleagues, then went to the changing room to change clothes before returning to her dormitory after get off work.

Ling Feiran wasn't in a hurry to leave work. She had just changed two sets of soiled sheets and blankets, which had bloodstains and pus from sores on them and needed to be sent to the laundry room for disinfection and washing.

"I'll take these to the laundry room before I leave work." Ling Feiran said goodbye to her colleagues in the duty room and pushed the cart full of dirty sheets to the elevator.

The laundry room was on the first floor. When the elevator went down to the eighth floor, a nurse and a little girl of about five years old came in.

The little girl was clearly infected; her forehead was swollen, larger than that of a normal child, but she had beautiful, bright, and adorable eyes and eyebrows.

The little girl looked up at Ling Feiran and said in a clear voice, "I've never seen you before. You're new here."

Ling Feiran smiled and nodded, saying, "Yes, I'm new here."

The little girl lowered her head and thought for a moment, then took the hand of the nurse next to her and said, "Nurse, my mouth is itchy."

The nurse looked embarrassed and whispered, "Don't, don't be naughty."

Ling Feiran casually took out a tissue, bent down and said to the little girl, "Let me wipe your mouth so it won't itch anymore."

The little girl grinned and said, "Okay!"

After saying that, he turned around, his back to Ling Feiran.
As Ling Feiran was wondering, she saw the back of the little girl's head crack open, revealing her white teeth and bright red tongue.

This horrifying scene left Ling Feiran frozen in place, her hand holding the tissue hanging in mid-air.

The little girl grinned mischievously, "Hehehe, wipe my mouth for me~"

The nurse scolded softly, "You're being naughty again! Shut your mouth!"

The nurse reached out and pulled the girl behind her, saying apologetically to Ling Feiran, "I'm so sorry, this child likes to play pranks and always tries to scare people."

Ling Feiran broke out in a cold sweat, and it took her a while to come to her senses before she said awkwardly, "It's okay..."

Just then, the elevator arrived at the first floor, and the nurse hurriedly left with the little girl.

Ling Feiran watched their backs as they walked away, and after a moment, she slowly pushed the trolley out of the elevator.

The scene she had just witnessed was so impactful that the image of the little girl's split head remained vivid in her mind the entire way home, leaving her quite shaken. Although there were many patients with physical deformities on the ninth floor, Zhao Xiaolei and Liu Wen had briefed her on each patient's condition beforehand, so she was somewhat prepared. But just now, she was completely unprepared, and she had come within a step of that split head.

After the initial shock subsided, a lingering discomfort began to set in.

Because the child was too young, her eyes were innocent, and she seemed completely unaware of her current situation, not knowing that genetic pollution had rewritten her life.

Ling Feiran felt a heavy weight in her heart.

After taking the soiled sheets and blankets to the laundry room, she went back to the ninth floor, changed her clothes, and packed her things to go back to her dormitory.

When she got downstairs, she found the little girl who had scared her earlier running around in the playground.

—Infected patients do not stay in the ward all the time. Patients whose physical condition allows have a fixed amount of time for outdoor activities every day.

Ling Feiran watched from afar as the little girl skipped and jumped among a group of infected people, like an energetic little antelope.

She thought for a moment, then silently walked over.

As they got closer, the little girl noticed Ling Feiran and immediately stood still, tilting her head to examine Ling Feiran as if trying to determine her intentions.

Ling Feiran gave her a friendly smile and gently beckoned, "Come here for a moment, okay?"

The little girl reluctantly moved forward, pouting as she asked, "Are you going to punish me?"

Ling Feiran laughed and said, "Didn't you just say your mouth was itchy? Let me scratch it for you."

"Really?" The little girl looked incredulous. "Nobody likes my mouth and always tells me to shut up."

“Really, try turning your back on it if you don’t believe me,” Ling Feiran said.

The little girl turned around with a hint of disbelief, turning her back to Ling Feiran again. Her messy hair was pulled and tugged, revealing the crack in the middle.

Ling Feiran took a comb out of her bag, squatted down, and carefully combed the girl's hair.

Comb your hair on the left and then on the right, creating a middle part.

"Your hair is all stuck in your mouth, how can it not itch?" she said as she combed, then tied the little girl's hair into two braids with a rubber band.

"It shouldn't itch anymore now, right?" Ling Feiran asked with a smile.

The little girl shook her head, her face full of surprise, "It doesn't itch anymore, it really doesn't itch anymore!"

She jumped up excitedly, then suddenly ran to the young man standing not far away, shouting, "Amir! Come and see, my mouth isn't itchy anymore!"

Ling Feiran looked in that direction and saw the young man walking slowly towards her in the backlight. He was tall and slender, and although she couldn't see his features clearly yet, she was inexplicably certain that he must be very handsome and elegant.

He half-squatted down, patted the little girl's head, and asked, "Maria, who braided your hair?"

The voice is also very pleasant to listen to, gentle and soothing, with a strange sense of warmth and purity.

The little girl pointed at Ling Feiran and happily replied, "The new nurse did my braids!"

Amir looked at Ling Feiran, took the little girl's hand, and walked closer. His face gradually became clearer in Ling Feiran's eyes.

Ling Feiran stared blankly at the other person.

All I can say is that it was indeed a face that blurred the lines between genders, a face of extraordinary beauty.

Ling Feiran needs some foreshadowing, Pei Xianjue needs some foreshadowing, and even the meteor's perspective needs foreshadowing. I'm already confused by all the branching storylines. This week, I'm a foreshadowing maniac!
