Chapter 12 You Saved France

Blood splattered and screams were heard.

The German soldiers fell down one after another like harvested wheat, but with Colonel Jonas in command, none of them dared to flee. They could only lie on the ground and look at the colonel with fear and pleading eyes, as if to say: Order a retreat, sir, we can't deal with it!
But Colonel Jonas knew he had no way out.

To the rear was the Marne River, and the only bridge must now be crowded with people, with the main force of the First Army pouring over the bridge like a tide.

If he ordered a retreat, the soldiers of the 1st Regiment would either be blocked on the bridge or forced into the river.

Neither of these options was a good choice and would lead to the destruction of the First Regiment, so Colonel Jonas could only persist. He gritted his teeth and gave the order in a hoarse voice:
"Hold on!"

"Grab your weapons, whatever it is, and fire at it!"

This was the only order Colonel Jonas could give; it was the only order he could think of.

Since the war began... or rather, since he came into this world, he has never felt as desperate as he does today. It seems that there is no way to deal with "it" and he can only wait to die here!

The German bullets still could not penetrate the "monster", but the machine gun on the head of the "monster" was madly spewing flames at them. Bullets knocked down rows of German soldiers who were standing or squatting and shooting from all angles.

The "monster"'s machine gun was carrying out covering fire, while the French soldiers sticking their heads out from behind the "monster" were carrying out precise shooting. The combination of point and surface attacks made the German soldiers suffer horribly.

Even if the German soldiers lay down, it was of no use. There was no place to hide nearby, and bullets flew in from all directions, hitting their legs, bodies, and heads... The German spiked helmets were made of leather and had no protective effect at all.

It was almost impossible for the German soldiers to hit the French soldiers. They hid behind the "monster" and used it as a shield. They suddenly appeared to fire, and then immediately retreated to pull the bolt, leaving the German soldiers only a limited few seconds to react.

In despair, Colonel Jonas suddenly thought of the fortifications built by French soldiers on the banks of the Marne River, which might provide a hiding place for the soldiers.

Thinking of this, Colonel Jonas shouted: "Retreat, retreat to..."

Before he finished speaking, the German soldiers quickly got up from the ground and ran back.

Colonel Jonas was shocked. His troops had never behaved like this before. They had already retreated before the order was even given. This was not a retreat, but an escape!

Then Colonel Jonas realized that things were not going well. If they started running away as soon as they heard the word "retreat", would that mean the situation they had been worried about before, that is, a collision with the main force coming over?

"Stop!" Colonel Jonas shouted in panic, "Everyone stop..."

But no one listened to him, and the "retreat" of the German soldiers was out of control.

Colonel Jonas overestimated the quality of his men, or rather, he underestimated the power of fear, and everyone, including himself, was on the verge of collapse.

At this time, Colonel Jonas shouted "Retreat", and they were like a flood that broke through the dam and could not be stopped.

Colonel Jonas had no choice but to retreat with the troops, shouting as he ran:
"Organize defense on the riverbank, organize defense on the riverbank..."

"Whoosh!" A bullet pierced through Colonel Jonas' back with a sound of breaking through the air.

Colonel Jonas's upper body suddenly leaned forward due to inertia, while his lower limbs and arms were stretched out and swung to both sides.

Time seemed to stop at that moment. Colonel Jonas slowly fell to the ground face down. All around him was dirt splashed by bullets hitting the ground, blood spurting out from the bodies of German soldiers, and pairs of terrified eyes as they fell to the ground with wounds.

Amid waves of severe pain and the sound of the last struggling heartbeat, Colonel Jonas' consciousness gradually left him.

……

Charles was very satisfied with the battle situation. When he saw the German army retreating, he ordered the messenger waiting beside him:

"Order the reserves to attack the Marne Bridge!"

"Yes, sir!" the messenger responded excitedly.

He was already so excited by the victory in front of him that he hated himself for not being able to witness this miracle in person! He waved the signal flag in his hand vigorously, conveying orders to the troops in front.

Soon, the signal flag in front responded with "Received", and the three "tanks" serving as the reserve team, with three teams of French soldiers, sped up and rushed out from the flank of the team towards the Marne Bridge.

Camille didn't dare to look at this bloody scene, but she didn't want to abandon Charles and go away. She could only hide behind the building, fold her arms and shiver in the corner, asking from time to time:
"Did we win?"

“Are we winning?”

……

Djokovic looked at the battlefield and answered excitedly:

“Yes, we are winning!”

"Our soldiers were very brave. More than 300 of them fought off several thousand Germans..."

"No, it should be something invented by Charles. It successfully helped the soldiers to repel the Germans!"

"The other soldiers are back, we are counterattacking!"

Dejoka was right. The French army was retreating, but when they turned around they were surprised to find that the Germans had not caught up with them.

Not only did he fail to catch up, but he was beaten badly and fled in panic.

The French soldiers hesitated for a moment. Although they did not understand what was happening and had no officers to command them, they all knew that they should counterattack. After all, no one would refuse victory, glory and promotion, so they turned their guns around and joined the battle again.

At this point, the outcome had been decided, and the defeat of the German army was only a matter of time.

Francis gave a deadpan “hmm.”

He admitted that his initial judgment of Charles was wrong. This little guy's military talent was comparable to Napoleon's, and at least he was much more reliable than Major General Gad.

Then a smile appeared on his face again, and the benefit he gained was that everything came back to him.

The family and two large factories, including a machine gun production line, as well as many immeasurable honors and benefits...

Finally he fixed his gaze on Charles, thinking about how to position him.

The ability of this little guy is far beyond his imagination. Can he control this little guy?

Charles didn't notice the gazes of others. He just walked to Joseph beside the stands and comforted him:
"It's going to be okay, the battle is almost over!"

Joseph breathed a sigh of relief, his expression relaxed a little:
"Yes, Master Charles!"

Matthew was driving one of these "tin cans" on the battlefield.

Joseph, staring at the battlefield, admired Charles from the bottom of his heart:
"This is your strength, Master Charles! It was you who led them to win this battle!"

"You saved us all, possibly including France!"

Ciel replied calmly:
"It's too early to tell!"
