Chapter 38 The Eternal Bridge (Part )

The German sentry guarding the bridge stood shivering in a makeshift barrier made of sandbags, on top of which was a dark machine gun.

They rubbed their hands together and breathed out warm air to try to keep out the severe cold at night.

"Damn, it's so cold today and the lieutenant said we should be careful to guard against enemy sneak attacks. I think even a ghost would freeze to death." A senior exempt soldier of the German Army complained while stamping his feet. He still had half an hour before his shift change, and then he could hide in the field tent at the back to warm himself by the fire.

With their qualifications, it is extremely difficult to be promoted to non-commissioned officers, and strictly speaking, senior exempt soldiers do not have to do miscellaneous tasks.

However, the troops are now suffering from severe casualties and no longer care about these rules.

"Who are they?" Another German private had better eyesight and spotted three figures in the dark, carrying a stretcher.

His shouting cheered up the old soldier, and he immediately went to take charge of the machine gun.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot, it's me!"

When the three of them came closer, the veteran realized that they were three people wearing Soviet military uniforms. If they had not spoken fluent German, he would have definitely shot.

Even so, the veteran suddenly pulled the safety of the machine gun, and the two recruits next to him immediately came over to help by lifting the ammunition belt.

"Stop! Who are you and why are you wearing Soviet uniforms? Answer the questions or we will shoot!"

The three men immediately stopped and threw all their Soviet weapons on the ground.
"We are from the reconnaissance battalion directly under the Don Army Group. According to the order of the headquarters, we disguised ourselves as Soviet troops and went deep behind enemy lines to open up a path for rescue troops." The person who answered was obviously Hanta. He was actually as nervous as the other two soldiers. If this method was not done well, it would be simply courting death!

"Certificate!"

"We are deep behind enemy lines, how could we possibly carry our ID with us? Are you stupid?" Hanta was obviously very dissatisfied.

"And the password?"

"You idiot, they all said they are directly under the headquarters, how could they know the password of our division?" The old soldier looked dissatisfied, this new recruit was really stupid.

"Then how can we believe that you are Germans?"

The recruit didn't hesitate to release his eagle until he saw the rabbit. He raised the muzzle of his gun slightly and aimed directly.

"The person on the stretcher is our Lieutenant Styler. He is injured. Come over and take a look!"

When they heard that the person on the stretcher was actually a lieutenant, several people dared not act recklessly. The new recruit looked at the old soldier, and the old soldier reluctantly put on his submachine gun and walked out of the bunker.

When we got closer, we saw that the person on the stretcher seemed to be an Asian man, also wearing a Soviet corporal's uniform. His body was covered in blood, and it was obvious that he had been through a fierce battle.

From his collar, the lieutenant's Roman column collar badge was clearly visible.

The veteran immediately stood at attention and saluted to greet him.

Subordinates in the military must salute when they meet their superiors. This is an iron rule.

The one lying on the stretcher was Lin Chen. He moved his jaw arrogantly on the stretcher to respond.

Although the old soldier was not very happy, it greatly increased his credibility. In the German army, officers and soldiers were clearly divided into different levels, so it was normal for them to have an arrogant attitude. If they were approachable, it would be a sign of fraud.

This is one of the important reasons why ordinary German soldiers fought so hard. "Sir, may I ask your rank and number?"

Lin Chen glanced at him impatiently, then said slowly, "You are not qualified to know who I am. My identity is top secret. Go call your superior!"

Although his words were extremely disdainful, his pure Berlin accent still made the veteran relax his vigilance.
He was also from Berlin and was all too familiar with the accent.

(How could he know that this was the German language given to Lin Chen by the system? When he chose the accent, he was not familiar with other places, so he could only choose Berlin. He didn't expect to hit it by accident.)
"Okay, sir. I'll report to our commander right away. Please wait a moment!"

The old soldier immediately called a new soldier and asked him to go to the tent and call the commander.

After a while, a German officer in a second lieutenant's uniform came over.

There were no stars on his straight shoulder straps, so when he saw Lin Chen sit up and take off his Soviet army coat, revealing a lieutenant officer uniform with a silver star on it, he was so scared that he stood at attention and saluted.

Lin Chen casually returned a military salute. (We are all national defense forces, so there is no need to shout out that greeting that will bring disaster to this book. Please forgive me!)

"Mr. Lieutenant, Hank reports to you from the Second Company of the First Battalion of the Eleventh Armored Regiment of the Sixth Armored Division of the Wehrmacht!"

"Okay, thank you for your hard work!" He quickly put his coat back on. It was indeed too cold.

"Lieutenant Hank, we are from the reconnaissance battalion directly under the Don Army Group. I am Lieutenant Steck. Under the order of Marshal Manstein, we are advancing behind enemy lines to carry out sabotage and reconnaissance. Our mission is to go to the next bridge and mark the shortest rescue route. We will do our utmost to ensure the smooth implementation of Operation Thunderbolt."

Lin Chen spoke in a very clear and concise manner. All of this came from the confession of the German officer who was killed, as well as the historical knowledge from his previous life.

Taken together, the credibility is naturally greatly enhanced.

After listening to this, Hank felt that what the other party said was indeed similar to what he knew. The German army has always had a tradition of sending special operations teams to raid and investigate behind enemy lines. These troops are all elites and have a high level of confidentiality. The fact that they could tell him so much was already a sign of respect for him.

But he was still a little hesitant because they had no documents.
"How about this, you should call the Don River Command directly and ask the Marshal to confirm whether we are real or fake!" Lin Chen took the initiative to ask him to make a phone call to verify.

Now it was his turn to be surprised and embarrassed.

Not to mention that he was just a small second lieutenant, even their regimental commander might not be qualified to speak to the marshal. How could this be verified?
And the worst thing is that because this place was occupied temporarily by the vanguard, there was no time to set up telephones.

After thinking for a long time, he was also afraid of what to do if the person he let in was a spy?
So he decided to send two soldiers on a three-wheeled motorcycle with a sidecar to the regiment headquarters to find a phone number to verify the situation.

Then he came out and apologized to the lieutenant, hoping that they could stay here for one night and let them go after he verified the facts.

Lin Chen's palms were sweaty at this moment. He did not notice that they had set up a telephone on the way here, so he decided to take a gamble. Fortunately, the gamble paid off.

Otherwise, if the other party really had a telephone, with the German army's rigor and efficiency, they would immediately discover that they were "fakes". Then, let alone the two machine guns on the bridgehead and the shiny black 88mm anti-aircraft gun, even the few German soldiers in front of them would be enough to give them a hard time.

They were eager to stay and so after some refusal, they were arranged to stay in a field tent located closer to the inside.

Lin Chen expressed his willingness to live with his men and did not need any special treatment, which made Lieutenant Hank feel respect for him.

This is the quality of a German professional soldier!
