The Four Steps to the Sky
Chapter 80 One person broke free from the shackles
On
And the most powerful lighting medium is the sun, only with the sun can we clearly distinguish ordinary things. The same contrast can be applied to intelligent things. If we try to explore the qualities of those things around us and the ways of classifying them, unless we have rational "form" we will fail utterly. Know nothing.
Plato also explained his metaphysical theory with a well-known "cave" metaphor: There is a group of prisoners in a cave.
There was a white wall in front of them, and a fire burning behind them.On that white wall they saw shadows of themselves and of things behind them to the fire, and since they could see nothing else, the group of prisoners would think the shadows were real things.
Finally, a person broke free from the shackles and groped out of the hole. For the first time he saw the real thing. He returned to the "cave" and tried to explain to others that those shadows were actually just illusory things, and point them to the bright road.
But to the prisoners, the man seemed even more foolish than before he escaped, and declared to him that there was nothing in the world but shadows on the wall.
Plato used this story to tell us that "form" is actually the object under the sun, and what our sensory world can feel is just the shadow on the white wall.
Our nature is dark and monotonous compared with the vivid world of ideas. Those who do not understand philosophy see only shadows, but philosophers see external things in the sunshine of truth.
In Plato's parable (), we can imagine that everything in the universe represents a series of increasing "reality" (relty); One more split was made with the same proportions as the first (the second split had the same proportions).
