Chapter 17: People in the Red Keep
Chapter 17: People in the Red Keep (I)
"Seven layers of hell, what are those damned Free Cities nobles doing? Why do people always bother with that beggar king?"
After seeing Illyrio off, Varys, the chief of intelligence, was soon summoned to the tea room where the king was resting.
Today was really unfortunate. Varys knew that the king had gone out hunting and caught nothing, so it was not a good day to deliver news. However, the king had given an order before he went out, and he must have an explanation when he returned, so he had no choice but to deliver the intelligence.
In the tea room where the king was, there were only three people: King Robert Baratheon, who was sitting and drinking; Captain of the Iron Guard Barristan Selmy, known as "Barristan the Fearless", who was standing beside him; and Chief of Intelligence Varys.
The king sat on an oak chair beside the tea table. He used to be very tall and strong, but now he had become obese due to over-indulgence in delicious food and wine. His fat body was like a small mountain, with unkempt black hair and a thick, black beard. The sunken dark circles under his eyes and his pale, fat face made it difficult to recognize the brave and warlike hero he used to be. His deep blue eyes were filled with impatient resentment.
Barristan was a tall knight who stood erect beside the king, looking strong and graceful. Like the rest of the Kingsguard, his armor, cloak, and shield were all white, with white silver thread and hooks on his scales. But the frost on his face and the white hair peeking out of his helmet showed that he was no longer young, but old. He said nothing.
Varys stood on the other side. He had returned to his normal appearance, with a round, fat, bald head, and painted, wearing comfortable clothes made of fine silk, brightly colored, and with a sweet scent of powder. He was slightly hunched and lowered his head, as if he was the one who was bearing the king's anger.
But the king just grumbled.
"We must find out who they are as soon as possible. These damned businessmen and nobles." The king took a big sip of wine and exhaled a strong smell of alcohol. "Didn't they say they were getting farther and farther away? Isn't Pentos very close?"
Over the years, the remnants of the Targaryen have moved from Braavos to Myr, from Myr to Tyrosh, getting farther and farther away from Westeros, and later even to Qohor. The king had hoped that they would simply run to the Far East, Asshai, or even further, but they just wandered around the Free Cities, then went to Volantis and Lys, and this time they even went back to Pentos.
As the king moved, the alcohol flowed down his thick black beard. He couldn't help but reach out to cover his beard. The alcohol flowed down his hand to his protruding belly, soaking his gorgeous thick clothes. Soon the king touched his protruding belly, and suddenly threw the wine glass aside in anger: "Damn it, seven levels of hell!" No one knew who he was scolding.
Without waiting for Varys and Barristan to say anything, the king covered his face with his hands in melancholy and waved at them: "Get out!"
Varys and Barristan were not surprised.
The king was drunk.
"Yes, Your Majesty." Varys nodded, then nodded to the captain of the iron guard beside him, and walked towards the gate with humbly small steps.
Barristan stared at Varys's slow pace as he left with his sharp eyes. Only after Varys left did he speak with his throat: "Your Majesty."
As the captain of the King's Royal Guard and his personal bodyguard, he inevitably heard many secrets of the King's conspiracy. His sense of responsibility as a knight drove him to give advice to the King. The captain of the Royal Guard was slightly dissatisfied with the King's private request of Varys to a disgraced knight to be a spy without telling the Prime Minister, and planned to deal with the Beggar King and his sister on the other side of the Narrow Sea when the opportunity arose. He thought it was dishonorable. But he also knew that the King kept it secret from the Prime Minister because he knew that the Prime Minister would also make suggestions and objections like him.
But before Barristan could say what he wanted to say, the king held out a hand, his palm suspended in the air: "Leave me alone for a while, Barristan." The king seemed to be immersed in some kind of sadness and interrupted Barristan. The king's attitude was firm. Barristan had to shut up.
Barristan served quietly beside the king for a while, until the king's snoring sounded from the tea table. He then walked to the door and called to his fellow guards outside the door: "Call Jaime over."
Soon, Jaime Lannister, a tall and handsome man in a white robe with flowing blond hair, came to the door: "Summon me, sir."
Barristan nodded, "Yes, you go ask the queen to take His Majesty back to his chambers."
"Your Majesty is drunk again?" James was obviously no stranger to such things. "I can't guarantee that the Queen will come."
Barristan replied, "Just go ahead, I'll wait for your report here." Jaime bent down to indicate that he accepted the order, then straightened his body, walked with his back straight, and headed towards the queen's bedroom.
When James arrived, the queen was sitting quietly by the window of her bedroom, bored. Perhaps she had just finished a banquet to entertain the ladies of the royal city. She was dressed in a gorgeous dress, and her beautiful posture made James' eyes light up.
The tournament for the crown prince's naming day was about to be held, and many nobles had already arrived at King's Landing. The king was busy with state affairs and had to go out to personally deal with the problem of wild animals in the royal forest. The task of receiving the nobles on behalf of the royal family naturally fell on the queen.
The current queen of the Seven Kingdoms is Jaime's twin sister, Cersei Lannister. She has the typical golden curly hair and green eyes of the Lannister family, fair skin, a slim figure, and a well-proportioned figure. Although the experience of giving birth to three children has left traces of time on her, she is still one of the most beautiful women in the Seven Kingdoms.
Jaime Lannister is the queen's twin brother and has almost unimpeded access to her.
The queen picked up the wine glass. The maid serving wine beside her naturally filled it for her. The queen raised the wine glass, looked at her twin brother, and said with a smile: "You came just in time, come here, drink with me."
Jaime's mind was in a state of confusion, but he did not forget the situation. He stood still, his attitude quite serious. "Ser Barristan asked me to ask you to take the king back to his chambers."
"Ha." Queen Cersei sneered. "The king won't come himself. Do you want me to go get him?"
"The king is drunk," Jaime replied.
The queen replied arrogantly, "Let him do it himself." Then she snorted, "I would rather pretend to be drunk and lie on the floor than climb into my bed."
As the queen finished speaking, the maids in the palace all lowered their heads. Fortunately, the considerate Sir James helped them out. He coughed lightly and said, "All of you go out first. Pretend you didn't hear what the queen said just now."
The maids left the bedroom one after another as if they had been pardoned.
The queen stood up with a smile, holding the wine glass in her slender white fingers, and walked closer to her twin brother, putting the wine glass and her hand to his lips.
"Drink it," the queen ordered.
Jaime always obeys his sister, the queen.
After he finished drinking the wine in the queen's cup, he said, "The king is still waiting for my report."
"Of course." The queen's fingers scraped across his cheek, and her delicate fingertips wiped the wine stains on his lips. "The queen is waiting for your report here as well."
James' breathing became heavier, and it took him several breaths to calm his aroused emotions. He quickly walked out of the queen's bedroom.
He was anxious to report back.
