Chapter 34: Jon Arryn
Chapter 34: Jon Arryn
"Please be careful."
"'Please be careful'?" The old prime minister looked at the strange man who was warning him with his sharp eyes like an eagle. "Who is speaking, hiding his true face and not daring to show it to others?"
Just now, the guard Xiufu informed the old Prime Minister that a visitor who refused to give his name passed by the other guards outside the Prime Minister's Tower and appeared in front of his personal attendant, demanding an audience.
The visitor was a stocky man, wearing tattered boots stained with mud and a thick brown robe made of extremely rough material. His face was covered by a hooded cloak, he smelled of sweat, and his hands were hidden in his thick sleeves.
“Please forgive me,” the masked man said in a strange, low voice, “Prime Minister, I request to speak to you alone.”
The old Prime Minister narrowed his eyes and did not answer immediately. The heaviness in the air hung in the air. "Xiufu, you leave first." As the old Prime Minister gave the order, the stagnant air eased a little. After the door was closed and they were the only two left in the room, the visitor lifted his cloak.
"Varys." The old Prime Minister said the visitor's name without any surprise on his face, as if he had expected it.
"My Lord Prime Minister," Varys said politely to the old Prime Minister. "Please be careful. I'm afraid someone is trying to harm you."
"'Someone,'" the old Prime Minister asked, "Who?"
"You ask me, Hand," Varys replied. "And I venture to say that you know it better than I do."
The old Prime Minister asked the next question: "What do you know?"
Varys replied: "You are in a high position and they dare not deal with you openly. Lord Hand, please be careful with your food and have someone taste it before you eat it."
The old prime minister's eyelids twitched slightly: "You said someone would poison me, do you have any evidence?"
Varys said respectfully: "As wise as you are, can't you imagine their methods? No one can..."
"Only those who are not worthy of being human would think of such a thing." The old Prime Minister interrupted Varys with a serious face.
Varys was not angry: "They say poison is a woman's weapon."
The old prime minister didn't treat him well: "There are also cowards and eunuchs."
"You don't trust me," Varys sighed. "But I speak my mind, Hand."
"What do you know?" The old Prime Minister asked the same question again. "You know what I'm asking."
"Your actions are a matter of state," Varys replied. "Many eyes are watching you."
"Including you," said the old Hand. "People say that in King's Landing, little birds are everywhere and octopus spiders know everything."
Varys gave a sharp and hurtful smile: "No one can know everything. That is just the nonsense of ordinary people. Lord Prime Minister, you should know clearly that I only know what I should know. This is the duty given to me by the king."
The old Prime Minister asked, "Then the king sent you? Does the king know?"
"It is my duty to send me here, Prime Minister. You may laugh at me, but eunuchs also have a sense of honor." Varys was a little sad, as if he was hurt. "You are the one who maintains the Seven Kingdoms. We all know what the king does every day."
The old prime minister didn't trust him at all: "With this sentence, someone can pull out your tongue."
"You are going to do to me what you did to Ser Ilyn Payne?"
Ser Ilyn Payne is the current king's executioner and a knight of House Payne from the Westerlands. During the reign of King Aerys II, he served as the captain of the guard for the King's Hand, Lord Tywin. Because someone reported that he claimed that "Lord Tywin is the true ruler of the Seven Kingdoms", he was tongued out by the king.
"I am not Tywin, and the current king is not Aerys II." The old Prime Minister asked for the third time, "I ask again, what do you know?"
"If you are asking me about what you and Lord Stannis are planning, I tell you, Hand, I know it, and so does the king," Varys answered. "You intend to have Lord Stannis take over your duties as Warden of the East, and have your son adopted by him. But you may not know that the king has privately promised the queen that the position will go to Jaime Lannister, and he wants your son to be adopted by Lord Tywin."
The old Prime Minister stared at Varys without saying anything for a long time. The solemn atmosphere in the room made his mouth dry.
"Hmph." The old Hand broke the silence. "Go away, Varys. Your duty is to the king. It is your duty to be loyal to the king and not to be partial to anyone."
"Yes, Prime Minister." Varys couldn't help but sigh secretly in his heart, "I will keep your warning in mind."
Varys left.
After a while, the old Prime Minister's attendant Xiufu knocked on the door and came in.
The old Prime Minister asked, "Did you see where the visitor went?" "The stable," the young servant replied, "I followed him, but I couldn't find him. I couldn't find the way."
"Forget it, go down. We'll have to arrange for someone to keep an eye on the stables from now on."
After the old Prime Minister finished his instructions, he waited for the attendant Xiufu to leave before he flipped through the books on the table in the Prime Minister's reception room and took out the "Genealogy and History of the Major Nobles of the Seven Kingdoms" borrowed from Grand Maester Pycelle. The old Prime Minister carefully put the book in his arms, and then officially finished his paperwork for the day and walked back to his room.
When the old Hand returned to the room, his wife, Lady Lysa Tully, was half lying on the bed holding his young son, Robert Arryn.
Lady Lysa is breastfeeding her six-year-old son.
Robert Arryn had always been frail and sickly, so Lysa doted on her son extremely, protecting him everywhere and indulging him in everything. She even didn't wean him until he was six years old.
The old prime minister felt distressed when he saw his child in this state, but he also knew that the child was incapable of taking any responsibility in his current state.
Old Jon knew that he was already old, so he designated many heirs, but they all died before him. However, he was already old, and his wife had several miscarriages before finally giving birth to a sickly son, Robert Arryn.
His marriage to Lady Lysa was not happy. During Robert's Rebellion, in order to gain the support of Riverrun, Jon and his adopted son Eddard Stark married Lysa Tully, the daughter of Lord Hoster Tully, and Catelyn Tully respectively.
By then, Old Jon would be old enough to be Lady Lysa's grandfather.
"Madam, you are not asleep yet." The old Prime Minister greeted his wife. Usually, this kind of situation meant that Madam Lysa had something to make use of, either to punish "disobedient" servants or to ask for some job arrangements.
Lady Lysa was not like this before. When she was young, Lysa was a beautiful, slim, big-breasted girl, delicate and shy. But now she is paranoid, harsh and mean, and thinks that there are enemies everywhere. The maids and servants are afraid of her, and only the majesty of the old prime minister can suppress them a little.
But not today. Lady Lysa just quietly fed the baby with breast milk, her hands gently caressing the baby in her arms, a smile blooming on her face, like a gentle and loving mother.
When Lady Lysa heard her husband's greeting, she quickly made a hushing gesture to the old Prime Minister.
"Good boy Robin, mommy loves you." Lady Lysa sang a gentle song to lull her to sleep, "Good boy Robin, mommy loves you, mommy loves you."
This heartwarming scene made the Prime Minister, who had been working hard outside all day, feel inexplicably warm. He nodded to his wife and then walked quietly towards the desk in the bedroom.
He habitually wanted to pour himself a glass of wine before going to bed.
The flagon is empty.
He looked at his wife and children, unable to bear saying a word to disturb them, so he quietly stood up, walked lightly to the door, and whispered to his personal attendant Xiufu to get him some wine.
Not long after, his guards brought him a flagon full of wine.
Before going to bed, he flipped through the book "Genealogies and History of the Principal Nobles of the Seven Kingdoms" on his desk.
Thinking of what he and Stannis had found out, he felt an inexplicable mix of emotions and sighed from the bottom of his heart.
This terrible fact could plunge the entire dynasty into war if he is not careful. Will the solution he chooses have a profound impact on the direction of the country?
It is so difficult to bear such a heavy burden on my shoulders.
With mixed emotions, the old prime minister took a sip of wine.
Lady Lysa's little sleep-dream song was still playing softly.
"Dear Robin, mommy loves you.
Good boy Robin kiss, go to sleep nicely.
As long as your mother is around, no one can hurt you.
With your mother around, no one can make you afraid.
Good boy Robin, kiss me, mommy loves you.
Good Robin kiss, good Robin kiss."
That night, the old prime minister fell ill.
