Chapter 8 Mocking the Lu Family
Gu Xingzhao didn't care what happened to Princess Shunyu, since he only needed to care about the fate of the Lu family, and Princess Shunyu wasn't even on the Lu family genealogy.

"I wonder if my ancestors are still alive? I, Lu Qing, have a favor to ask of you."

Lu Qing hesitated for a long time before calling out to Gu Xingzhao with focused concentration.

Gu Xingzhao responded, "I'm here. What is it?"

Lu Qing: "Princess Shunyu has been suffering from severe abdominal pain since evening and has been unable to eat. I wonder if I could share some of the food and hot water that you, my ancestor, just gave her?"

He was apprehensive when he asked the question. After all, it was already a great act of kindness for their ancestors to protect the Lu family, and he shouldn't have any other demands. However, Princess Shunyu was ultimately implicated because of him...

It was just some food; the old man could have simply delivered it to the person, but he came to ask for his opinion instead.

Although Gu Xingzhao didn't care about the food, Lu Qing was very satisfied with the gesture. The old man was truly taking his ancestor to heart.

"Wait for me a moment."

A moment later, Gu Xingzhao brought out painkillers, wrapped them in paper, and stuffed them into Lu Qing's hand. "These are painkillers, which can relieve abdominal pain during a woman's period. Take them to her as well."

As she spoke, she glanced at the Snickers bar in Lu Qing's left hand, "Don't give her the one you're holding in your left hand, it might worsen her stomach pain if she eats it."

Just now, when the little palace maid beside Princess Shunyu spoke to Lu Qing, Gu Xingzhao could guess that the little princess was probably having menstrual cramps. Lu Qing must have guessed that as well, which is why he wanted to send some hot water over.

She has a deep understanding of menstrual cramps. Sometimes, when the pain is so bad, she vomits, has diarrhea, and breaks out in a cold sweat, and even painkillers don't work.

She didn't care, but Lu Qing wanted to help, and it was just a small favor, so there was no need to refuse.

"Thank you, ancestors."

Lu Qing was grateful and amazed. He hadn't said anything, but his ancestors seemed to know everything.

He wasn't comfortable having someone else deliver it, so he summoned his eldest grandson to do so.

Song was puzzled. Why was her father-in-law always ordering his grandson around today? Usually, he would ask her husband, Lu Zhou, for anything.
Lu Xingyao took the items and hid them, holding only two rough cakes in his hand, and walked towards the carriage at the back.

He stood by the carriage and spoke to the coachman, “My name is Lu Xingyao. My grandfather asked me to deliver some food to Your Highness. Please pass it on.”

A weak, feeble female voice came from inside the carriage, "Your grandfather is Grand Secretary Lu?"

"Exactly."

Soon, the palace maid Caihe got off the carriage, took the food, and thanked him when she heard that there was also medicine and hot water inside.

Shunyu leaned against the carriage, her face pale and her forehead covered in a fine layer of cold sweat. "Did you go to see Grand Secretary Lu?"

Caihe bit her lip and nodded under her mistress's gaze. "This servant has no choice. Those officials ignore us..." Her words were quite harsh.

The prince had just cried, and she was both heartbroken and anxious.

Shunyu lowered her eyes, lost in thought.

Caihe hurriedly fetched the medicine and the hot water, saying, "Your Highness, that person just now said this is medicine that can cure pain."

Seeing that the thing in her hand was a tiny pill, Shunyu picked it up with two fingers, stared at it for a while, and frowned deeply. "Medicine?"

She had never seen medicine like this before. It was tiny and didn't smell like medicine. Could it possibly be effective?
Caihe: "Your Highness, please try it first."

In the past, when His Highness had abdominal pain in the palace, the imperial physician would bring him medicine. Now that he is outside, there is no imperial physician, so he can only make do.

Shunyu had her doubts, but since it was something Lu Qing had sent, she immediately took the medicine.

The excruciating cramps continued for a while, but gradually, she actually felt the pain lessen, and drowsiness gradually crept in, causing her to drift off to sleep.

Seeing that she had finally fallen asleep, Caihe breathed a sigh of relief. She hadn't expected that the medicine sent by the Lu family, which looked so small, would have such a miraculous effect. In the past, when His Highness had abdominal pain, even after taking the imperial physician's medicine, he would still be in pain for half a day. This time, it had only been a short while.

No one knows where the Lu family got this miraculous medicine from...

"Father..."

In her sleep, Shunyu was restless and murmured a few words in her sleep, tears sliding down her cheeks.

Caihe saw it all, feeling both heartache and resentment. She had served the princess since she was a child, and because she was a few years older than the princess, she could see many things clearly.

His Majesty was born to a palace maid and is not well-regarded, but the princess was born to the late emperor's favorite concubine and was deeply loved by him.

The princess felt that His Majesty treated her kindly only because of the closeness and care he had shown her during her childhood.

At that time, His Majesty's closeness to the princess was merely a way to gain favor with the late Emperor. Everything was for the sake of vying for the throne, and later, the rumors circulating in the palace about His Majesty's cruelty towards his brothers confirmed this.

But the princess respected His Majesty and never said anything to sow discord between the siblings. However, a few years ago, after the late emperor passed away and His Majesty ascended the throne, he disregarded the late emperor's dying wish and ignored the princess, saying he was too busy with state affairs.

The princess fell seriously ill and nearly died, but it was thanks to Grand Secretary Lu's invitation that the skilled imperial physician was brought to the palace to save her.

As a servant, she had long seen through His Majesty's hypocrisy, his ruthless pursuit of his goals, and his complete lack of genuine affection. Yet, the princess, being a sentimental person, actually believed his excuse of being busy with state affairs.

The poor princess has ended up in such a state.

...

After delivering the items, Lu Xingyao turned back and noticed that many people along the way were staring at him with unfriendly eyes.

Lu Qing had made many enemies when he was an official in the court. Now that he had fallen from grace, there were bound to be people who would seize any opportunity to mock him, saying things like, "A princess who has been demoted to a commoner, and the Lu family is still trying to flatter her?"

"If you ask me, the Lu family is just too arrogant. They dared to point fingers at the emperor just because they were Grand Secretaries. Otherwise, would they have ended up like this?"

The mocking voices were so loud that the Lu family could hear them clearly.

Lu Qing closed his eyes, pretending not to hear. Having been to the Imperial Prison once, he now understood that living was the most important thing, and there was no need to fight for temporary face.

Lu Yang was a straightforward person and couldn't stand anyone saying anything bad about the old man. He immediately flew into a rage and was about to get up to settle scores with someone, but Lu Zhou pressed him down, saying, "Don't cause trouble."

In the current situation, avoiding trouble will bring more peace.

Lu Yang was unwilling, but he could only suppress his anger.

Upon seeing this, the mockery intensified. "I used to think the Lu family could do anything, but now they're just sitting here eating coarse bread and drinking dew, just like us."

"Men are not as good as women, hahaha!"

"If this thing fell from the sky into a mud pit, men, women, and children would probably be crying together!"

"Snapped--!"

"Bah-bah!"

The men who had been relentlessly mocking the Lu family were suddenly covered in mud, and they immediately burst into curses, "Who did this?! Who hit me?!"

"is that you!"

"I saw you smiling just now! It must have been you!"

Those men grabbed the people next to them and threw a punch. Someone tried to stop them but was caught in the crossfire, and soon they were all grappling with each other.

The Lu family members were all puzzled. Why were those people fighting amongst themselves?
