It would be much easier for them to use EUV lithography machines to carry out equivalent seven-nanometer processes.
When it comes to craftsmanship, the engineers at Zhiyun Microelectronics are serious, and their technical level is world-class...
As for Gulf Technology, it still needs some time and a lot of testing to collect data in order to lay the foundation for subsequent mass production models.
For top-level equipment like photolithography machines, even if a prototype of a mass-production model has been developed, it still needs to undergo various tests and improvements, and it will take a certain amount of time before it can enter true mass production.

Not only did it greatly improve production efficiency, reaching the level of similar products of ASML, it also had an overlay accuracy of 12 nanometers, which means that the lithography machine can use double exposure technology to produce chips equivalent to 18- nanometer process nodes.
Although the above-mentioned HDUV-400 and HDUV-500 are both well made, they are still slightly inferior to the foreign ASML products of the same level in some technical details. After all, the research and development time is tight, so it is good enough to be able to produce them. Some minor problems can be solved slowly later.
This is also the reason why, although Zhiyun Microelectronics purchased these two lithography machines at that time, it still purchased a lot of ASML's NXT1950 and 1970 lithography machines. At that time, it still adopted a two-legged approach.
But things are different in the HDUV-600 era. This lithography machine can be said to have brought together all the top technologies of Fairy Mountain Holdings, no, even the entire Chinese industrial system.
And with the huge investment of resources by Xu Shenxue and the day and night efforts of a large number of scientific researchers, the technology of this lithography machine has undergone very rapid iterations, from the barely usable basic state at the beginning, to the improved model A, and then to the perfect model B.
By the time the HDUV-600B model came along, its basic performance was no less than that of ASML's NXT1980 lithography machine of the same level, except that its trouble-free time was a little shorter and subsequent maintenance was a little more troublesome.
However, in terms of production efficiency and manufacturing precision, they are already at the same level.
The HDUV-600 lithography machine is the culmination of Gulf Technology's DUV immersion lithography machines. It has very complete technology. It can be applied to the equivalent of 10-14 nanometer processes using double exposure, and can be applied to the equivalent of 600 nanometer processes using quadruple exposure technology. The HDUV- lithography machine is currently the main model of Gulf Technology's immersion lithography machines. Even though the unit price has reached more than million US dollars, the cumulative orders have exceeded units.
However, due to scarce production capacity, there is currently only one customer, which is Zhiyun Microelectronics, and other customers have to wait in line.
Zhiyun Microelectronics currently uses this lithography machine to produce chips equivalent to the seven-nanometer process, and will subsequently be used to expand production capacity to 10-14 nanometer processes.
After all, although this lithography machine can use quadruple exposure technology, double exposure is actually its main task and is more suitable.
Using this lithography machine to produce 10-14 nanometer chips is more efficient and less costly.
For many years to come, the HDUV-600 lithography machine will be Zhiyun Microelectronics' main production lithography machine, because the equivalent 10-14 nanometer process will not be obsolete for many years. Analysts who study the semiconductor market believe that the equivalent 10-14 nanometer process will still be the main process in the next decade and occupy a major share of the semiconductor market.
Based on the huge demand from Zhiyun Microelectronics and other domestic semiconductor manufacturers, such as SMIC, Bewin and other manufacturers, the demand for this lithography machine will continue for many years in the future and the sales volume will not be low.
In addition, although its performance is a little behind, its price is also lower, which makes it suitable for the production of HDUV-500 and HDUV-400 with mature processes.
Together, the three HDUV series lithography machines constitute the main revenue and profit source of HaiLan Technology's lithography machine project, and also shoulder the important task of being the core equipment of China's semiconductor manufacturing industry.
Of course, the current DUV immersion lithography machine is no longer a bottleneck, nor is it a cutting-edge technology. Currently, Xu Shenxue and the American consortiums are competing for the next-generation semiconductor manufacturing technology with EUV lithography machines as the core.
The next-generation semiconductor manufacturing technology with EUV lithography as the core will be used in the manufacturing of future logic chips at the equivalent of seven-nanometer process and five-nanometer or even lower process nodes.
Similarly, if we want to continue to make technological breakthroughs in storage chips in the future, we will also need to rely on EUV lithography machines with lower resolution.
At present, Zhiyun Microelectronics' top memory production process '10B' process has an actual process node of 600 nanometers... and this process node has approached the physical limit of the HDUV-B lithography machine.
Before the EUV lithography machine was adopted, it was already difficult to make further technological breakthroughs...
The planned 10C and 10D processes in the future will both require the support of EUV lithography machines.
The same is true in the field of flash memory chips. Currently, Zhiyun Microelectronics' top-level process for manufacturing flash memory also uses the HDUV-600B lithography machine. Its mobile phone products will be launched on the market this year with the new generation of S18 mobile phones.
The next generation of process technology also requires the support of EUV lithography machines... Of course, the flash memory process can be relatively flexible. It can reduce the demand for process technology by stacking more layers, so even without EUV lithography machines, it is actually possible to produce flash memory chips with more layers!
But wouldn’t it be better if we could have more layers while also reducing the size and spacing of transistors, thus strengthening both at the same time?
The performance of logic chips, memory chips and flash memory chips are closely related to the technical level of lithography machines.
What makes Xu Shenxue fortunate is that Gulf Technology's EUV lithography machine project is currently progressing smoothly.
The second experimental machine has now been delivered to Zhiyun Microelectronics. If the subsequent tests and R&D work go smoothly, Gulf Technology will be able to start delivering mass production models to Zhiyun Microelectronics around the fall of this year. Probably next year, Zhiyun Microelectronics will be able to use EUV lithography machines to produce chips equivalent to a seven-nanometer process.
Of course, this is all under the assumption that everything goes well. If there are slight delays in some links, then there will be delays. It would be normal to wait until the year after next to enter mass production.
But there is no need to worry too much. Although the technical progress of ASML's EUV lithography machine and the various tests and tests of TSMC's EUV lithography machine are faster, they still take time and will most likely not be completed next year... In the previous years, Galaxy Security did a very good job and delayed the technological advancement of the other side's EUV lithography machine for several years.
Now the two sides have officially ended their conflict in the field of lithography machines, but it is not so easy for them to recover and continue to advance the progress of technological research and development.
In summary, the progress of both parties in the field of EUV lithography machines is actually almost the same... and this is actually the core reason why the two parties were able to reach an agreement.
Since they are almost the same, why bother fighting? Just pat your butts and go home. Fighting is also very expensive... The operational expenses that Galaxy Security spends in the field of lithography machines every year are not a small amount.
Not only is most of the money Galaxy Security earns every year spent on this, but Xu Shenxue also has to inject large sums of additional funds every year through various means. Just the year before last, when the two sides were fighting fiercely, Xu Shenxue once injected an additional US$1 billion into Galaxy Security in one go by signing overseas corporate security orders.
