Chapter 65 Stupid Things
I took Shangxingjian around the house, but I didn't get any useful information from him.

That evening, everyone ate a meal and chatted superficially as usual.

After eating a few bites, Cheng's father excused himself by saying he was full and went home, which Cheng Mai didn't mind.

When the maid came to ask her about planting roses in the backyard, Cheng Mai scoffed, "It's almost autumn, why plant roses?"

The maid paused for a moment, then said, "The master mentioned that he thought this place was too spacious and wanted to plant roses. The gardener will arrive tomorrow."

"I understand. We'll talk about it when the gardener arrives tomorrow." Cheng Mai knew that the maid was telling her in advance what would happen tomorrow, so that she wouldn't blame them if someone suddenly arrived.

The maid acknowledged and left.

Cheng Mai tapped the table with his fingertips. Old Cheng wouldn't suddenly want to grow roses. Growing roses is just a pretense. This gardener must have some skill.

Shang Xingjian's gaze fell on her fingertips tapping the table; she had kept this habit all along.

"Hey, you say it." Cheng Mai suddenly tapped his index finger on the table and looked at Shang Xingjian. "I'm already here. Cheng Ying hates me so much, shouldn't she come out and strangle me right now? Why is she so quiet?"

"How do you know she didn't intend to kill you? You can't see her."

After the merchant finished speaking, Cheng Mai subconsciously looked around.

"So, it's never a bad thing to have skills. It's not too late to find an apprentice now."

"No, you promised to protect me." Cheng Mai can see ordinary ghosts, but she can't see ghosts that are kept in a formation.

Thinking of this, Cheng Mai subconsciously moved closer to Shang Xingjian, "So, just how much filth is in this house?"

Shang Xingjian thought of Cheng Mai's cramped room and the little devil who could easily catch him staring at him with a simple glance.

"Not many, not enough for General Meng An to kill with one slap."

Cheng Mai nodded, "That shouldn't be too many."

Merchant Jian smiled. "What are we doing tonight?"

"I'm planning to go find Lao Cheng to play chess."

"Offering himself up?" Shang Xingjian thought Cheng Mai was a bit cheeky.

Cheng Mai remained noncommittal, saying, "I want to see just how Old Cheng is going to court death."

When Mr. Cheng returned to his room, he closed the door. Cheng Ying immediately came out from behind the window. "Dad, hasn't my sister left yet?"

Mr. Cheng frowned. "She can't see you, so why are you afraid of her?"

"But the person next to her is the Taoist priest who came to our house back then. Dad, is my sister trying to take me in? But I have no other thoughts, I just want to stay with Dad." Cheng Ying cried without tears. "I know I did a lot of wrong things when I was alive, but won't my sister even give me a chance to make amends?"

Mr. Cheng's expression darkened. The more obedient Cheng Ying was, the more he felt that Cheng Mai was ignorant and unfilial.

"She's just here to act for a few days, she'll be gone in a few days." Mr. Cheng said unhappily, "Don't worry, I will definitely keep my promise to you. After I sell the shares, I will ask the Supreme Master to perform a ritual for you so that you can be spared the suffering of hell and be reincarnated in a good way."

"Thank you, Dad." Cheng Ying said obediently, understanding her father's feelings as a father.

Inwardly, however, she felt nothing but disdain. Father Cheng was easy to manipulate; a little coaxing would solve everything. Unfortunately, Cheng Mai, that woman, would never know how to use coquetry. Once she got Father Cheng's money, the Supreme Mage could recruit more demons and monsters to deal with Xuanhe Technology. At that point, Shang Xingjian would be too busy to care for himself, and Cheng Mai's life would be hers.

As night fell, Cheng Mai, carrying a chessboard, pried open Cheng's father's door.

Upon hearing the noise, Cheng Ying immediately hid. Cheng's father opened the door and looked coldly at Cheng Mai, "No one is home to see this. Who are you putting on this act for?"

"Show it to those who can see it." Cheng Mai smiled slightly. Something had just been burned in the master bedroom, and it still smelled of incense. Cheng Mai tilted his head slightly and saw the paper-cut clothes that hadn't been completely burned yet. "Who is this for? My mother can't wear such fancy clothes."

Mr. Cheng's expression changed, and he was about to kick Cheng Mai out, saying, "I need to rest. If there's nothing else, you can go back now."

“It’s still early. Didn’t you love playing chess? I haven’t played with you yet. How about we play a game today?” Cheng Mai said, and went inside before his father could refuse.

Shang Xingjian naturally followed him inside, saying, "Uncle, I'm sorry to bother you."

Mr. Cheng stood at the door for a while before closing it and going back inside. "You know how to play chess?"

"I just learned it not long ago." Cheng Mai had already set up the chessboard and was waiting for his father to come over.

Shang Xing glanced at Cheng Ying, whose eyes were filled with hatred, and sat down next to Cheng Mai without making a sound.

Cheng's father also took his seat. He had taught Cheng Ying how to play chess, and he had also taught Cheng Mai, but Cheng Mai was too stupid, so he eventually gave up.

"They say you've been keeping a low profile all along. Why did you do that?" Father Cheng asked, putting down his son and looking at Cheng Mai.

"You believe everything they say?" Cheng Mai chuckled. "Have you selectively forgotten everything that Cheng Ying and her daughter, along with Butler Liu, did before?"

“I believe you are biding your time,” Mr. Cheng said in a deep voice.

"If I admit that I'm hiding my abilities and biding my time, can that prove Cheng Ying's innocence? Do you really think that if I say something, she won't have to pay the price for her crimes?" Cheng Mai's voice was calm and unhurried, as the white chess piece twirled between his fingertips.

Cheng's father remained silent, but he could see from the chessboard that Cheng Mai was playing with fierce skill; she had never considered leaving herself a way out.

"To play chess so well after just learning, you're smarter than I imagined." Mr. Cheng had to admit this, but unfortunately, this woman's heart wasn't with him.

Seeing that no one had noticed her, Cheng Ying boldly approached them. Just then, Shang Xingjian suddenly looked up and stared directly at Cheng Ying. Cheng Ying flinched, only to see Shang Xingjian pluck a white hair that had fallen into Cheng Ying's temple.

So the man didn't see her.

Cheng Ying was somewhat smug. Although she knew a little bit, it was nothing special.

So Cheng Ying boldly took a few more steps closer, even wanting to bite Cheng Mai.

Cheng Mai placed a piece, and although he couldn't see Cheng Ying, he could feel the chill.

"Even if a brain is useful, it still needs someone who knows how to use it. What good is it if some stupid person actually gets my brain? They'll just end up as a lonely ghost."

Before Cheng Ying could even take a bite, she suddenly met Cheng Mai's gaze.

Cheng Ying took a step back in shock. Cheng Mai curled the corners of his lips and added as he looked down, "Even if it's a wandering ghost, it's still a brainless, stupid ghost."

The father slammed his son down with a loud thud, saying, "When did you become so sharp-tongued and mean?"

"Is this what you call being sarcastic and mean?" Cheng Mai slowly raised his head to look at his father. "Compared to Cheng Ying, she's not even a fraction as good." As Cheng Mai spoke, he placed the last piece of his chess piece and said slowly, "With such a house full of filthy things, can you really sleep at night?"
