Chapter 265: Traitor
Chapter 265: Traitor
There are no other villages here. The former village was razed to the ground by the people of Chenjiabao long ago, leaving only a settlement standing on the plain.
Without those scattered villages hiding monsters and zombies, such a settlement is easier to defend and safer - that was the environment in the past.
The zombies followed the sound and tore a hole in the tattered barbed wire.
There are actually people alive here. Bai Xiao looked around and saw a large awning inside the barbed wire. The awning was also protected by barbed wire. He didn't seem to see it when he passed by last time. It should have been added later to prevent crazy birds.
Not finding the person who made the sound, the zombie continued to walk inside. Suddenly, a steel bar jumped out from the side and stabbed straight into his stomach.
Bai Xiao slapped it down with a slap, and when he looked sideways, he saw a monster that could hardly be called a human. His whole body was swollen, with large areas of ulcers on his body, and blood and pus mixed together. Only his eyes could still be seen as a human.
This made Bai Xiao frown. Another kind of infected person?
"You were the one who shouted just now?"
The zombies didn't even want to touch him with their hands. They kicked away the steel bars, preparing to prevent him from pouncing on them - not because they were afraid of danger, but because he was too disgusting.
After missing the attack, he seemed to have used up all his strength. He lay on the ground panting, with unwillingness in his eyes.
"You still want to kill zombies even though you're in this state?"
Bai Xiao turned his head and looked, it seemed that there was no one else. No wonder he didn't smell the stench of human beings just now. This guy was barely alive.
He thought the revelers had seen a large zombie, called him in, and then bowed down to him, and then rushed into the safe zone together to kill them.
Seeing that the dying man didn't answer, Bai Xiao turned around and walked inside to see if there were any other revelers.
The broken high wall couldn't stop the zombies. The human in the coffin asked, "Who is that? Why don't you let me see?"
"It's disgusting. You'd better not watch it."
Zombies were wandering around the settlement, which was empty and dead silent. There were dead bones that had been pecked beyond recognition, and rotting corpses.
Apart from that, no other living people were seen.
Bai Xiao walked out and squatted in front of the man who didn't have much time left. "You seem to be the last person in Chenjiabao. Why didn't the safe zone clear you out?"
He just looked at the monster with unwilling eyes.
This made the zombie feel a little strange. He touched his helmet and said, "Shouldn't you pray that I lead the monsters into the safe zone? Why do you seem to hate me so much... Have you changed your ways? I used to know a man who also walked out of Chenjiabao. His name was Zhang Tan. He said that you are all doomsday theorists and doomsday revelers, thinking about when everyone will die every day."
Hearing the name Zhang Tan, the man's eyes moved and stared at the still tall monster squatting on the ground.
"Huh? Do you know each other?" Bai Xiao asked.
"He didn't try to kill you?" the other asked.
"Why did you want to kill me? To be honest, he was pretty friendly. He gave me a... survivalist reserve. He was a nice guy. We traveled together for a while, and then he died. I buried him."
The other party closed his eyes and uttered two words: "Traitor."
Bai Xiao was even more surprised, "He is considered a traitor? What does it mean to not be considered a traitor?"
He knew how determined and fanatical Zhang Tan was. Even though he didn't have much time left, he wanted to go and see what the most prosperous place before the disaster had become now, even if he died on the way.
"Kill you. I should kill you."
Hearing what the other person said, the zombie's heart skipped a beat. He stared at this swollen man whose appearance was unrecognizable. His mind turned, and suddenly the zombie smiled, "You know me... No, I should say, you know me."
The other party didn't answer.
"I've only come into contact with one person from Chenjiabao, Zhang Tan. He died on the road a long time ago. How do you know me? Let me guess... because the safe zone came to the ruins a few years ago, they were looking for something, such as... a zombie?"
The zombie stared at him, thinking. No emotion could be seen in his scarlet eyes. He just spoke faster and faster. "You also know that although you don't know what they are looking for, you will know when you see me, right? Why are you so anxious? Because I am the antidote? There is a vaccine in the safe zone? Is this why you hate me?"
The other party closed his eyes and did not answer.
"Well...it seems I bring hope." said the zombie.
“The revelers are also connected, right? You have a radio that can contact the safe zone... There is an insider in the safe zone, so you knew it as soon as you saw me. Otherwise, now that the end has come, you should be smiling, at least you shouldn’t hate a zombie so much—”
It was quite calm at first, but later on, the zombie suddenly reached out and grabbed his bloody neck, staring at him with scarlet eyes, and raised his voice and asked, "Really?"
The other party spat out a mouthful of pus and blood, opened his eyes, looked at the monster, suddenly smiled, and said weakly: "There is no vaccine."
He coughed lightly, and the zombie let go of him and shook his hand. A piece of rotten flesh fell off his neck, making him look even more terrifying than the zombie. "You can't change anything." He tried to move, propped up his body to make his breathing smoother, and after a while, he said, "Do you think they will treat you as a human being?"
"You feel guilty." said the zombie.
"I'm just stating a fact." The other party shook his head.
The zombie just looked at him, then suddenly patted the coffin and said, "You are saved."
"Really? But he looks like he's dying." Lin Duoduo said.
"He is a doomsday theorist who wants to drag everyone down with him. You see we can't die, so he is anxious."
The other person's eyes fell on the coffin.
Suddenly he said, "What a good thing."
Just now he saw from afar the monster carrying a coffin and walking towards him step by step.
"I think so too," said the zombie.
"Is your daughter inside?" the other party asked.
"Well, my daughter, my captive human, my lover...you name it."
"I can't believe there are monsters protecting humans."
“She didn’t think of me as a monster either.”
"Really? It's fine." The other person stared blankly at the rain outside.
The only sound in the silent world was rain, the raindrops hitting the ground and the roof, the fragrance of grass and trees mixed with the stench of his body.
"Zhang Tan... When he left Chenjiabao, it was four years ago, right? He should have killed you then, or at least sent back a message."
"I didn't look like this back then. I was still a human being," said the zombie.
"I see……"
The other party was stunned.
Then he coughed a few more times and spat out a mouthful of pus and blood.
He shifted his gaze from the coffin to the zombie.
The tall zombie sat on the steps, watching a cricket stagger onto his arm and take a bite. A slight tingling sensation came over him, and the big zombie looked down at it, watching it jump away after a while.
"Everything is over now, why did you show up?" the other party said with a wry smile.
"It is you who has ended everything, not me or her."
"Can I come out? It's so stuffy in the rain." asked the human in the coffin.
"No." The zombie said, "Find a safe place so I can open the coffin, or you'll end up like him."
The human fell silent and carefully closed the small window on the coffin.
"You don't even have a weapon?" asked the zombie.
"It was taken away by the safe zone a long time ago." said the other party.
"Why didn't they take you away?"
"Of course I ran fast. Some people were recruited, and some came back."
"It seems that you are the most determined doomsday theorist."
"Maybe..." the other party chuckled.
"Then why didn't the safe zone come to reclaim the ruins?"
"Because... there is no vaccine." A smile appeared in the other person's eyes. "If you want to go, let's see if they can kill you, a monster."
