Chapter 138: Initial research on superconductivity, cooperating with schools to organize training courses
After returning to the underground base in the county, Wang Jiankun began researching superconducting materials.
From the information collected previously, Wang Jiankun gained some understanding of the development history of superconductivity and was also very interested in some of the applications of superconductivity.
The phenomenon of superconductivity was first discovered by Dutch physicist Heike Camerin Onnes in 1911.
When he studied the change of mercury's low-temperature resistance with temperature, he found that the resistance of mercury suddenly dropped to zero when the temperature dropped to 4.2K.
So he called this state in which resistance suddenly disappears the superconducting state.
After that, he discovered that many other metals also have superconductivity. He called this material that can enter the superconducting state as the temperature decreases superconducting material, also called superconductor.
Since then, the research on superconducting states and superconducting materials has entered the attention of the global scientific community.
However, although this phenomenon was discovered very early, a reliable theory to explain it was proposed very late.
It was not until 1950 that the quantum theory of superconductivity proposed by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer of the University of Illinois in the United States successfully explained the superconductivity phenomenon.
They believe that in superconducting metals, electrons attract each other through lattice waves to form electron pairs. Countless electron pairs overlap and often exchange pairs to form a whole. The flow of electron pairs as a whole produces superconducting current.
According to Wang Jiankun's understanding, the original arrangement of free electrons outside the atoms in certain substances is loose and irregular.
Materials with high conductivity and low resistance have free electrons arranged in a relatively continuous electron array.
Superconductivity occurs because changes in temperature cause a tiny shift in the position of atoms, which in turn causes the free electrons outside to move.
As these electrons move, they form a very continuous electron array. This continuous electron array has super strong conduction of electric current, making the resistance of the material almost zero during detection.
Although this theory explains the superconductivity phenomenon, it does not guide people to quickly find high-temperature superconducting materials.
The critical temperatures of superconducting materials found by scientists around the world are now below 20K.
It is very difficult to use superconducting materials with such a low critical temperature, and they can only work under the protection of liquid helium.
These low-temperature superconducting materials have little application value. Even if they are used regardless of cost, they will be very troublesome in actual application because the temperature is too low.
Wang Jiankun had bought a lot of helium from Peter before, and he knew that if he wanted to turn helium into liquid helium using conventional methods, it would require a lot of electricity for compression and cooling.
First, it has to be compressed, which requires a particularly powerful compressor to compress it to a very high pressure state.
The compressed helium then enters the condenser, where it is cooled to a temperature close to the triple point (-269°C).
Finally, the helium coming out of the condenser enters the low-pressure expander and becomes liquid under further cooling.
All three processes require a lot of electricity. If we want to industrially apply liquid nitrogen to cool low-temperature superconductors, the economic feasibility cannot be considered.
Liquid helium is also very easy to vaporize and requires special storage devices, so low-temperature superconductivity currently has no application value.
Wang Jiankun first produced liquid helium that night.
Under the control of his super powers, the speed of the helium molecules slowed down rapidly, and he controlled them to enter the container prepared in advance.
When the speed of these helium molecules drops to near zero, their temperature reaches -269°C. Because temperature is the macroscopic manifestation of molecular thermal motion, the greater the molecular thermal motion, the higher the temperature, and vice versa.
Therefore, the almost motionless helium molecules are naturally liquid helium.
After producing liquid helium, he produced the superconducting materials he had discovered one by one.
Those simple elements were completed first. After all, his base had collected all the elements of the periodic table, and it was very simple to take some and make samples to test superconductivity.
Then came the manufacture of more than ten kinds of compound superconducting materials. This process took him a lot of time. Because he did not collect complete information, he was unable to successfully manufacture some of them.
At this time, his superpowers were able to magnify the atom to a diameter of about 10 meters, and the neutrons and protons in the nucleus could also be seen clearly.
However, the external electrons cannot be seen clearly, and only a fuzzy cloud phenomenon can be seen.
This is an electron cloud formed when electrons move rapidly. Wang Jiankun wanted to enlarge these clouds, but found that he was unable to do so. No matter how hard he concentrated, he could not see the rapidly moving electrons, nor could he control them.
This is because he currently has very little understanding and research on microscopic matter, so he is unable to control the constituent particles inside the atomic nucleus, which are smaller in volume and mass.
However, it is not necessary to control electrons to study superconductivity. According to the theory of Cooper and others, electrons form tightly arranged electron arrays, which can move as a whole, thus forming superconducting current.
Since he can observe the electron cloud, he can also observe the electron array composed of electrons. However, the principle behind it may not be discovered quickly.
However, he has the superpower to observe such detailed structures, which can play a very important role in the study of superconductivity. He can create a large number of element combinations and then observe them in batches. He believes that he can find high-temperature superconducting materials.
Perhaps we can also summarize some rules to facilitate the subsequent search for superconducting materials.
Before he knew it, it was already midnight. Wang Jiankun put down the materials in his hands, rubbed his eyes, and went back to the room on the ground floor to rest.
On September 1982, 9, Wang Jiankun went to school to report in the morning. The principal and the head teacher seemed relieved when they saw him.
At the end of the first half of the semester, although Wang Jiankun told them that he would stay in No. 2 Middle School and would not transfer to Hong Kong, the two were still very worried.
They are relatively knowledgeable about some external information. They know that many people now yearn to go abroad and many people are trying every means to go abroad. There are such examples around them.
So when they learned that Wang Jiankun had obtained Hong Kong citizenship, they all thought that he would go abroad to study.
But they did not dare to persuade Wang Jiankun and their family. After all, education abroad is much better than that in China, and it is much easier to enter a prestigious foreign university after graduating from high school. If they persuaded Wang Jiankun to stay, it would feel like they were ruining his future.
"Jiankun, you're here to register. Just come over and sign your name. You don't have to pay tuition fees." The class teacher, Mr. He, said when he saw Wang Jiankun taking out money to pay tuition fees.
"Huh? That's right, I had forgotten. I was the top student last semester, which saved me dozens of dollars." Wang Jiankun realized that he didn't have to pay tuition fees until his class teacher reminded him.
"Jiankun, after you finish registering, come to my office and sit down. Is that okay?" Principal Wang said to Wang Jiankun after he finished registering.
"Hello, Principal. Sorry to bother you!"
After following Principal Wang to the office, he personally poured tea for Wang Jiankun and said, "This tea is from the top of Dazhang Mountain in my hometown. You should try it."
"Yes, it smells nice." He blew on the floating tea leaves and took a small sip.
"It tastes good. It tastes a bit bitter at first, but then it becomes sweet. It's bitter first and sweet later. It's quite tasty."
"As long as it tastes good, come visit me often in the future. Bring a pack with you later."
"Thank you, Principal. Is there anything you want me to do?"
"Jiankun! It's like this. I looked at the results of the top 100 students in last year's exams and found that the grades of several students in your Zheyuan Commune and your deskmate have improved significantly. I wonder if you can tell me what the secret is."
"Principal, do you know that I am the one helping them?" Wang Jiankun asked after hearing the principal reveal the secret of how he helped his classmates.
"Yes, I have been paying attention to you since you ranked first in the exam after entering the school. When I looked at your class's grades a few times later, I found that two students' grades also improved rapidly. Then I asked Teacher He to start paying attention to your situation."
"Later, I looked at the results of the top 100 students in the grade and found that the grades of several children from your commune also improved very quickly, so we concluded that you were helping them."
The principal was afraid that Wang Jiankun would misunderstand, so he explained how he discovered the situation.
"Then principal, do other people in the school know about this?" "At present, only I and your class teacher know about this, but the head teachers of other classes are also talking about it. After all, your deskmate from your commune has occupied 6 of the top 2 positions in the grade, and the next are also in the top ."
"Is that so? What are you going to do, Principal?"
"You little rascal, you're asking me a question back." When the principal saw Wang Jiankun throwing the question back, he pointed at Wang Jiankun and scolded him with a smile.
"I want to know first whether you have the ability to help more students improve their grades, and then I can come up with the next step."
"To be honest, I have the ability to help people with above-average IQs improve their grades quickly, but I don't have much free time right now. In the next year, I will probably stay in Wuyuan at the end and beginning of each month, and I may go to Guangzhou or Hong Kong for the rest of the time."
"Is that so? Then can you tell me how you helped those students?"
The principal was very happy to hear Wang Jiankun's first sentence, but then felt a little disappointed when he heard him say that he didn't have time later, so he asked Wang Jiankun further.
Wang Jiankun thought that his method of training disciples did not need to be kept secret. He had handed over information to Fang Guihua and others several times before at school, and they did not avoid other students when using the information.
So he gave the principal a general account of how he would instruct several of his disciples, and the principal's eyes lit up after listening.
"Jiankun, so you mainly give them some learning materials to let them study on their own, and then make targeted adjustments based on the exercises they do before giving them the next stage of learning materials?"
"Yeah? What do you want to say, Principal?"
"Jiankun, you know that we have only been teaching here for a few years, so there are not many good teachers. Many people's level was at most junior high school teaching before, but now they are forced to teach students while studying on their own. Therefore, the proportion of people who can be admitted to universities in our school every year is much lower than that in the region and provincial capital."
"Can you spend more time to help the school teach 30 more students?"
The principal first talked about the current situation of the school and then put forward his requirements.
"30? I won't have that much time in the future. Although my fellow countrymen and deskmates mainly study on their own, it takes a lot of time for me to produce the materials, and I also need individual tutoring from time to time."
"Well, Jiankun, I plan to set up a college entrance examination sprint group in the second grade of high school. In addition to your fellow townsman and deskmate, I will select 30 people with the best grades. During the evening self-study, we will gather them in a separate classroom and let them study on their own using the study materials you provide. You can take two days every month to help them with their classes and tutoring. How do you think?"
"Is that so? Then I can't guarantee the effect. With so many students, I can't give them as detailed guidance as before. Besides, I plan to take the college entrance examination after finishing my second year of high school."
"Ah? You're going to take the college entrance exam after finishing your second year of high school? Are you saying you want to take the exam in advance? That's not good. You want to get the top score. Taking the exam in advance will affect your grades, right?"
"Principal, let me tell you this. I have already finished my high school courses, and I also took a mock exam in July using this year's college entrance examination papers. According to the most strict grading, at most I would lose a few points. So I took the college entrance examination in my second year of high school because I was too young this year, and I had some other things to deal with, so I stayed in high school and didn't take the college entrance examination this year."
"Is that so? Then what about your fellow countrymen and deskmates? Are they also planning to take the college entrance examination in their second year of high school?"
"Yes, that's what I suggested to them. I also asked them to take a mock college entrance exam in July. According to their scores at that time, Yu Min and Lang Junjian both had scores that were good enough for Tsinghua University and Peking University, and Fang Guihua was just a few points short. The others could all go to relatively top key universities, and they still have a year to consolidate their studies. If nothing goes wrong in next year's college entrance exam, they should all be able to go to Tsinghua University and Peking University."
"Really? Jiankun, you have to be kidding. It's possible to get into Tsinghua University or Peking University?"
After hearing what Wang Jiankun said, the principal was so shocked that his buttocks almost left his seat and half stood up. It took him a while to calm down before he sat down again.
"Principal, I dare not brag to you. If nothing unexpected happens, they will all be able to be admitted to Tsinghua University or Peking University next year."
After listening to Wang Jiankun's confident words, Principal Wang pondered for a long time before saying, "Jiankun, you have brought me great news. If this is the case, the previous proposal is a bit inappropriate. Well, what if I reduce the number of people to 15 in total? You can help guide the 15 students with the best grades."
"15? Do they also have to take the college entrance examination in their second year of high school? I can't guarantee that they will be admitted to prestigious universities like Peking University and Tsinghua University!"
"I plan to select 15 of these 10 students from the current senior high school students, and then select 5 from the sophomores. We will first consult the students and only accept those who are willing to participate in this sprint class."
"By then, 10 out of 5 senior high school students will be able to go to the top 5 prestigious schools, and the other 5 will be able to go to key universities. The other sophomores will also be allowed to take the college entrance examination in advance. If they are admitted to key universities, it will be up to them to choose whether to go. If they are not admitted, they will continue to study in the third year of high school, and then it will be up to our school teachers to continue their training."
The principal told Wang Jiankun about the arrangements for these 15 students.
Wang Jiankun thought about it and decided that since these were all fellow villagers, he might as well help them if he could.
Although there are a few extremely talented students from this school who have been admitted to the top ten universities in the country over the years, the other students who were admitted to undergraduate programs have all gone to relatively average-ranked schools.
The reason is the same as what the principal said, the teachers’ level is too poor, which actually delays the development of some students.
"Okay, I agree. Principal, you don't need to make any arrangements for the top student in the arts department of the senior year. She is already studying with me. You can find 10 more students. For the sophomores, apart from my fellow countrymen and my deskmate Yu Zirun, you don't need to make any arrangements for our class monitor Wu Xiaoyi. He has also been studying with me recently."
"Oh, Zheng Qian and Wu Xiaoyi are also studying with you? No wonder, no wonder, I was wondering why their grades have improved so much, I thought it was because of their own efforts, but I didn't expect you to give them a push from behind."
"That's easier. I can arrange two more. Haha, Jiankun, you can tell me if you have any requests. If you can't think of it now, you can think about it when you get back."
Principal Wang thought that if Wang Jiankun’s training was really that effective, then next year’s college entrance examination would be a big success.
By then, there will be at least 9 students admitted to Peking University and Tsinghua University, 5 to the top ten key universities in the country, and several more may go to key universities.
At that time, we can ask the leaders for more funds and assign more good teachers to come to the school to participate in teaching.
Moreover, the learning materials provided by Wang Jiankun can not only be used by those selected students, but also by other students and even teachers. Although the effect may not be as good as that adjusted by Wang Jiankun based on individual test results, it is still much better than that of ordinary teachers.
Nowadays, teachers in schools mainly rely on textbooks provided by the Education Commission when teaching, and there are almost no tutoring materials.
Only a few senior teachers are of good level and can adjust their teaching according to students' exams and daily homework. Most other teachers can only read from textbooks. After all, they themselves do not understand some knowledge points very well and cannot judge the difficulty level well.
"Principal, I want to build a computer room in our school and select some people who are interested in and talented in computers to study here."
"Computer room? Are they the personal computers you see on TV? I heard that these computers cost tens of thousands of dollars each and are hard to buy."
"Yes, my uncle has a computer research job in Hong Kong and needs a lot of programmers, so I want to give our classmates an opportunity. For those who have computer talent but may not have the grades to get into a good university, you can try to develop in this direction."
"I see. In principle, it's no problem. As for classrooms, we can squeeze them into a smaller space in our school. I'll find a room in the office building to use as a computer room. How much space do you need?"
"In the initial stage, we plan to put 20 microcomputers and a master control microcomputer, which will require an area of about 25 square meters. We have to squeeze in first."
"25 square meters? Well, I'll ask the logistics department to organize a room for you. Try to make it a bigger room. But the computer, the corresponding parts and cables will have to be provided by your uncle. Our school doesn't have the conditions to help you solve this problem."
"Of course. My uncle will take care of all the computers and parts, and he will also help pay for the electricity. All the school needs to do is provide a venue, help promote it, and let students read a copy of the information distributed first. Then, they will take a selection test. After the selection is made, I will have a talk with the selected students to determine whether they will participate in this computer training class."
"Okay, it's settled then. I'll make the arrangements right away. Jiankun, come here often."
The principal smiled and escorted Wang Jiankun out of the office, then went back to arrange the matters that had just been discussed.
Wang Jiankun was also very happy. Although he would have to spend some time to help train the other 15 students in the future, it was not a big deal if he thought about it carefully. The main work could be handed over to Zhizi. If he found any good talents, he would spend more time on tutoring them. If not, he would just ensure that the information was provided in a timely manner. It would depend on themselves how much they could learn.
Now that the microcomputer training class has been agreed upon, a series of subsequent software projects can be put on the agenda. After all, it would be too slow for Lang Junjian to handle this alone.
At that time, he will be responsible for the main framework of some software and be the overall project manager. Others selected will be able to serve as basic programmers after completing training, freeing Lang Junjian from writing some basic programs.
Moreover, if this computer training course is implemented well, more cooperation can be carried out in the future.
For example, for some jobs that are highly repetitive but require some basic knowledge to perform, school students are good candidates.
Of course, it will not be limited to this high school. Another high school and a vocational school in the county can also cooperate.
