Chapter 522: Origin of the Witch

Chapter 522: Origin of the Witch
Daniel's heart tightened.

The elevator door opened at the right moment. He didn't have time to ask any more questions and could only follow Bai Jingen out.

To Daniel's surprise, the underground of the institute was not a dark or scary place.

On the contrary, the bright white lights shone down from both sides, reflecting a faint cold light on the mirror-like marble floor.

Daniel also relaxed a little, his eyes flashing with inquiry under the light.

"Doctor, please follow me," Bai Jingen smiled politely, without that weird look in the elevator.

Daniel followed the white manager's steps and stepped into the corridor.

"The doctor is the world's top researcher on killer genes," Bai Jingen said as she walked in front of him. "We invited you here to join our research."

"Research." Daniel frowned. "What exactly are you researching?"

"I know the doctor is curious," Bai Jingen turned her head and smiled, "Actually, I can tell the doctor now, but I think it's better not for me to say it."

As the two walked, the white light reflected from the white walls on both sides became more and more dazzling.

However, not long after they walked, the temperature suddenly dropped a lot. Daniel frowned, but still followed Bai Jingen's steps. The footsteps of the two made crisp echoes on the mirror-like marble floor.

Bai Jingen walked in front, as if she had eyes on the back of her head. "Because sometimes researchers need to conduct experiments at lower temperatures, some temperature changes are inevitable."

Daniel nodded in understanding.

After a dozen steps, the two sides were no longer white walls, but transparent glass walls.

Daniel noticed the researchers inside, who were concentrating on operating some complex instruments that Daniel had never even seen before.

There is more than one research room behind the glass wall. Some of them are shrouded in a layer of light white mist, through which serious faces can be vaguely seen under gloves and masks.

Daniel felt their concentration and became even more curious about what they were researching, but his curiosity also made him more silent.

He was afraid that he wouldn't be able to leave here today.

The deeper you go, the more complex and diverse the instruments inside appear, but some of them are commonly used research instruments in the outside world.

Daniel noticed that the researchers behind the transparent glass walls didn't pay any attention to them outside, but were just concentrating on the work in their hands.

All of these researchers wore surgical caps and surgical gloves, and were careful with every move to ensure the sterile environment of the laboratory.

The straight corridor was about to reach its end, but in front of the heavy alloy door at the end, Daniel stared at the laboratories on both sides in amazement.

Standing behind the glass walls on either side of him, the laboratory still had some glaring white lights, but
Densely packed transparent glass containers are arranged throughout the laboratory, containing body parts of various shapes.

Even the most.
brain.

"You guys are really crazy," Daniel took two steps back inconspicuously. This was just his subconscious action, and he actually knew that he couldn't leave.

Now that these people have seen it, they will no longer want him to leave.

"Crazy?" Bai Jingen stopped in surprise and looked back at him. "We thought Dr. Daniel was used to this. After all, Dr. Daniel has done a lot of research on it."

"."Daniel was speechless for a moment.

How could people who do genetic research not have studied these?

"Dr. Daniel, why don't you take a look at our equipment?" Bai Jingen smiled and pointed to the robotic arm that was performing delicate manipulation.

"With the help of machinery, we can complete more high-precision research."

Daniel watched silently for two seconds. The researchers inside were moving around. He couldn't see their faces clearly, but he always felt that...
They are very fanatical.

He turned and looked at the other side, which was also a sealed laboratory. He could see that the alloy door on the side opposite the glass wall was closed.

Daniel even saw the barometer through the glass. Apparently, the air pressure inside the laboratory was subtly different from that outside, which should have been to make way for the experiment.

There was a flashing screen above the laboratory table, which was displaying complex genetic sequences. Daniel stared at those things.

He saw the weirdness of these sequences; this could never be a normal human being.

Daniel also saw researchers carefully recording data, although he didn't know what they were recording.
Daniel looked deeper and his breathing almost stopped.

He saw the experiment subject.

Within Daniel's sight, and deep in the laboratory, an upright oval glass culture room stood silently.

Its surface refracts a faint blue light, and the entire culture chamber is filled with transparent culture fluid.

In the gentle embrace of the liquid, the experimental subject was suspended alone, with his naked body not touching the cold glass.

Many tiny tubes stretched out to the experimental subjects from all directions like tentacles, some penetrated deep into the skin, and some were close to the muscles. They quietly transported the essence of life.

The subject's face was calm, almost wooden, his eyes were closed, his long eyelashes fluttering gently in the culture medium, his breathing rose and fell rhythmically with the circulation of the culture medium, and even the detection equipment above could see various data of his body.

"This is a failure, even though it looks good," Bai Jingen followed his gaze and said softly, "but he won't wake up again."

"You are really crazy," Daniel muttered as he looked at the experimental subject.

"Crazy?" Bai Jingen shook her head. "We are just pursuing the future of mankind."

"Besides, he volunteered."

She stood in front of the alloy door, unlocking her pupils and face, but her hand was hesitant to put it on the handle to unlock the last lock.

She doesn't believe any genetic researcher could overcome the temptation of such research.

"Dr. Daniel, do you want to go in and find out the truth?" Bai Jingen smiled, her hand on the door handle of the alloy door.

Daniel took one last look at the lab.

He didn't believe Bai Jingen's nonsense about "voluntary", but he was a smart man and he had no way out now.

"Of course," Daniel breathed, "Please ask Director Bai to take me in."

Bai Jingen still had that polite smile, but in her smile there was a hint of pride that her plan had succeeded.

She opened the door and they both walked in.

As soon as the alloy door was closed, the lights in the corridor went out immediately, and one could even see a layer of white wall lowered outside the glass wall of the laboratory.

The entire corridor became dim and depressing. In the shadows, one could faintly hear unknown equipment operating, making a slight humming sound.

It can be said that the entire visiting process is a show.

Daniel looked up and saw a control room full of screens.

This is a place full of futuristic technology, filled with densely packed screens and operating tables, with people sitting in front of each table.

The data streams constantly jumping on these screens and the surveillance images constantly switching reveal the extremely high requirements for precise control and real-time monitoring here.

The operators stared intently at the various indicators, performing minor operations according to the orders of a woman sitting in the middle.

Just monitoring some
"They are all new humans, although they were born not long ago," Manager Bai's words pulled him out of the surveillance.

"This doesn't look like a laboratory," Daniel looked at her, "but more like a corporate monitoring room."

"That's right," the woman sitting in the middle stood up. What made Daniel's eyes widen was that the woman looked very similar to Bai Jingen in front of him.

"This is Dr. Bai," Bai Jingen smiled, "She is also my sister."

"Dr. Daniel," Dr. Bai extended his hand, "I have also studied some of the things you published, which are very helpful for research."

"Thank you for the compliment, Dr. Bai," Daniel nodded slightly and shook hands with Dr. Bai.

"Now, can you tell me what exactly you are researching?"

"We'll talk about this slowly," Dr. Bai asked Daniel to leave through the side door, and Supervisor Bai took over the work she had just done.

Dr. Bai and Daniel entered a new room through a small door in the control room. There was almost nothing here except a sofa and a coffee table.

"In the beginning, we called it the New Humanity Project."

"The main research is." Dr. Bai observed Daniel's reaction, "superhumans."

"Superhuman?" Daniel's eyes widened. "Like in the movies?"

"Almost," Dr. Bai smiled, "Our research on genes far exceeds people's understanding."

“The institute was established in 1980 and made very significant progress in the 1990s.”

Dr. Bai poured Daniel a cup of coffee. "So we officially started our genetic modification work in 1997, when the Asian financial crisis hit."

"Yes," Daniel held the coffee, his hands trembling slightly, "People?" "Of course," Dr. Bai smiled.

"In the beginning, we took too big a step, so we accepted the request from the US headquarters..." She said helplessly, "You also know that those upper-level people are very anxious when their lives are in danger."

Daniel squinted his eyes and roughly understood who they were working for.

"We recruited a group of adults as required and genetically modified them."

"Successful?" Daniel couldn't help but ask.

Dr. Bai did not keep the secret, but nodded with a smile, "It is a success, but that is the first generation after all. They have many defects. For example, they will need to inject drugs for the rest of their lives, otherwise they will experience symptoms of physical collapse and frequent severe pain in their bodies."

“There are many disadvantages, but there are also advantages,” Dr. Bai paused.

Daniel swallowed, "Do you really have super powers?"

"Yes," Dr. Bai nodded, then shook his head, "but it's not what we thought. The capabilities of this first batch are pitifully weak."

"It has improved some of my physical strength. If I use it too much, I need to go back to the company immediately for systemic drug injections, but compared to ordinary people."

"They are, of course, superhuman, without a doubt."

"We saved the life of a big shot here with this research."

“So we have received even greater support,” Dr. Bai laughed. “He can’t wait to advance his research so that he can become less dependent on drugs and less miserable.”

"In 1999," Dr. Bai's eyes became fiery, making Daniel feel a little hot, "we appeared and captured a very important person."

"That is our Witch No. 0."

"Witch?" Daniel frowned.

"That's right," Dr. Bai's eyes were still fiery, "She gave birth to Witch No. 1."

"The reason why they are called that," Dr. Bai opened his hands, "is because they really showed the power of God."

"But we feel that these are rebelling against God and blaspheming God," Dr. Bai calmed down and took another sip of coffee, "so we named it 'Witch' and the plan was renamed 'Witch Project'."

"Thanks to the two 'witches'," Dr. Bai said with a smile, "our research has made great progress."

"Wait," Daniel frowned, "What are those divine powers of the witch?"

"Thoughts interfere with reality," Dr. Bai said calmly, and Daniel almost dropped his eyes.

"You can think of it as telekinesis."

"However, Witch No. 0 is under our control. Witch No. 1 was born in and has weak abilities, so we also control her."

Daniel's face changed. He took in too much information at once.

"You have made so much progress, why are you still looking for me?"

"That's what I'm going to say next," Dr. Bai said with a smile, "We used the superpower genes of the first generation of witches to replicate a group of cyborgs, but they didn't have that kind of superpower."

"Although they are stronger and faster than normal humans compared to the first generation of experimental subjects, they also have their own shortcomings."

Dr. Bai looked at Daniel and said, "If you want to wear the crown, you must bear its weight."

"They need drugs to control their brains," Dr. Bai sighed, "otherwise their brains will..."

She twisted her fingers together and then suddenly opened them.

"The second shortcoming is also a feature we deliberately introduced," Dr. Bai's gaze made Daniel feel a chill down his spine.

"Violence."

"Or the main experimental themes of this group of people are motor nerves and violence."

"The nerves of sports have given them bodies that are no longer mortal, but violence has also penetrated their bones."

"That's when we started to notice Dr. Daniel's 'killer gene'."

Daniel lowered his head, "You want to study the monster."

“No, no, no,” Dr. Bai waved his hand, “We are not that crazy. It’s just that the direction of Dr. Daniel’s research is too close to some of our research.”

"."Daniel never dreamed that something like this would happen while he was researching genes.

"What did you do next?"

Dr. Bai raised his eyebrows, "Of course, I used genetic recombination technology to create Witch No. 2."

"We have high hopes for her. Her abilities are even stronger than those of Witch No. 1, even when she was young."

"We also used her superpower genes to create a batch of cyborgs."

"This group of transformed superpowered children also have that kind of telekinesis, but they are far inferior to the two witches No. 1 and No. 2."

Daniel observed Dr. Bai and saw the enthusiasm and pursuit in her eyes.

"We created Witch No. 2 here in ." Dr. Bai was a little frustrated, "But we still haven't been granted permission to build a Korean research institute in Jeju Island."

"Because the big guy doesn't allow it," Dr. Bai rolled his eyes, which was rare. "Although we created these superpowers, in the final analysis, we still need the big guy and his friends to protect us and provide us with money."

"If you continue pursuing this," Daniel said softly, "you will really be creating a devil."

"Why use sports and violence?" He was a little confused. "Isn't this creating criminals?"

"Because according to our research," Dr. Bai put down his coffee cup, "sports and violence go very closely together."

"."

"Of course," Dr. Bai extended an olive branch, "If Dr. Daniel can join us, maybe sports and gentleness can also appear?"

She continued to talk to herself, "Because the big shot was dying at the time, only the first generation of transformation could be carried out. The first generation had too many flaws, so too many researchers were transferred to study new projects."

Daniel thought thoughtfully, "Are they going to study how to repair the defects of the first generation of cyborgs?"

"That's right," Dr. Bai shrugged, "My deputy Dr. Cui, Professor Han, a famous geneticist, and Dean Gao, a genetic expert."

“These are just Korean researchers. There are many more researchers from other countries, and they have also been transferred,” Dr. Bai said helplessly.

After all the talk, Daniel finally understood that there was a shortage of staff and more genetic experts were needed.

"Those big shots are now somewhat resistant and don't want to continue implementing the Witch Plan. We must achieve more results."

Daniel smiled bitterly, "Can I refuse?"

"Not really," Dr. Bai shook his head. "I don't mind, but the confidentiality of the institute is very strict. I'm afraid the doctor may not be able to leave here."

"."

Daniel thought of Li You's frown and hesitation before coming here.

There was a flash of thought in his eyes, but he didn't ask, "I'll join."

"He who knows the times is a hero," Dr. Bai smiled and slowly stood up. "You still need to learn a lot to join the Witch Project. The supervisor will arrange a room for you upstairs."

"The food in the company cafeteria is very good," Dr. Bai said, opening the door of this room. Daniel then realized that this door also has handprint recognition. "There are meals from all over the world. You can go and try it at noon."

Daniel let out a long breath and nodded silently, "I understand."

When he walked out the door, Dr. Bai also turned around and looked at him with a strange look, "Is Dr. Daniel's interpersonal relationship convenient to handle?"

"If it's inconvenient, we can do it for you."

Daniel felt that she was hinting at something, but he still shook his head, "I only have one sister, and she has passed away. I have no relatives at the moment."

After Daniel was arranged to go upstairs by Manager Bai, the two sisters met again in the control room.

"You tried it?"

"I tried it," Director Bai nodded, "but he may not be very clear."

"Should we send someone to test it out?"

"." Manager Bai hesitated for a moment, "The first batch of people are now under strict control. They are working on a defect-filling project at another research institute. I'm afraid it's difficult to transfer them out for action."

"Just make it now," Dr. Bai smiled and waved his hand, his face full of indifference, "There are plenty of test subjects. The researchers below have already learned how to transform the first generation of test subjects."

"Okay," Manager Bai nodded, "I'll make the arrangements."
