Chapter 28. See, he's dead.
Yu Tingwan's period started around noon.

The lower abdominal pain became increasingly pronounced.

She was curled up on the old wooden table, her dark hair obscuring her delicate features.

She didn't know how much time had passed when she slightly raised her eyes, revealing a face drenched in sweat and pale. She reached out towards the small piece of brown sugar, no bigger than the palm of her hand.

Yu Tingwan knew that her menstrual cramps were severe and that she should drink some brown sugar and egg soup.

She didn't go out that day.

The rain lasted for two days, and the villagers of Linxi Village complained bitterly.

The mountain road was muddy and slippery, so Yu Tingwan wouldn't risk rushing up the mountain.

The sun finally came out, so she went outside, found a half-worn broom in the corner, and started sweeping the snow in the yard.

The two houses were close together, and she could hear Wei Shouzhong's voice from next door.

"Where did these dates come from?"

Hui Niang, holding needle and thread, didn't even look up: "I went to the river to wash clothes early this morning and ran into Widow Shi. She gave it to me."

Widow Shi's son worked as an accountant in the county town, and his family was one of the wealthiest in Xilin Village.

She lost her husband early in life and struggled to raise her son. Now that she's wealthy, she's still incredibly stingy and miserly, having been poor for so long. Even when relatives come to beg for money, they're always turned away.

Hui Niang: "She wanted me to help make some meat sauce. The village head's family had a feast before, and her son really liked that kind of sauce. He kept asking for it afterward, but she just couldn't make it taste the same."

Her eyes were smiling: "Widow Shi said she would give me eight coins, and I agreed."

This is income for the family.

There were only five dates, but they were big and round, and looked delicious. They must have been bought from the county town by Widow Shi's son.

Hui Niang was mending clothes: "Husband, wash the dates and take them to Ah Lang."

Wei Shouzhong ignored her words, washed the two and stuffed them into her arms, then handed the rest to Wei Zhao, who was lying on the chair pretending to be asleep.

He looked at the handsome Wei Zhao, a tender look in his eyes: "Eat. You've loved dates since you were little, and you always went up the mountain to eat them."

But the wild jujubes on the mountain lacked moisture in those years, so they were small and sour. They were nothing like the sweet and crisp ones that Widow Shi gave them.

Wei Zhao didn't even lift his eyelids, his face expressionless: "I don't like it."

Wei Shouzhong: "What do you like to eat now?"

Wei Zhaosheng felt utterly hopeless and had no appetite.

Wei Shouzhong: "What does Ah Lang eat in the military camp?"

Wei Zhao glanced at him.

I thought I wouldn't hear a response from him, but Wei Zhao spoke up instead.

His voice was completely flat, as if he were talking about someone else: "When they go to the capital, they send me some tribute during festivals."

Wei Shouzhong: ...

Why are you bragging again?

Wei Shouzhong didn't expose him, but instead went along with his words and asked, "I didn't realize our Alang was so highly regarded. The tributes are all for the imperial relatives."

It's unclear what word stung him, but Wei Zhao's face darkened: "They're just trying to get me to risk my life by offering me small favors."

Why does it sound like there's deep resentment and malice?
Wei Shouzhong sighed: "Over the years, I have often inquired about it. The reputation of Wei Family Army is extremely high. People say that the general treats his subordinates well, ensuring that they have enough to eat every meal, and often even pays out of his own pocket to give you meat."

What is the border?
The wind and sand are fierce, and life is hard.

Where else in the army do soldiers receive such treatment? Their duty is to protect the people, even at the cost of their lives.

But Wei's army is different.

The young General Wei once uttered a sentence.

[Here, there is no rule of sacrificing one's life for the peace of the land. The lives of the people are lives, and so are yours! Your parents and brothers are waiting for you to return. You must go to war alive and come back alive.]

Wei Zhao said calmly, "The cooks often give me special meals."

"As long as there is no war, Wei's army will go into the deep mountains to hunt every three months. The winner of the hunt will be richly rewarded, and a bonfire night will be held."

When he spoke, Hui Niang stopped what she was doing.

The couple listened intently, as if they could glean insights into Ah Lang's life on the border from his words.

Wei Shouzhong: "What has Ah Lang ever hunted?"

Wei Zhao glanced at him: "Tiger."

Wei Shouzhong exclaimed in surprise: "Really?"

Ah Lang is so amazing! Wei Zhao: "I've taken it in."

Wei Shouzhong: ? ? ?

Wei Zhao: "If you catch a spy from the enemy state, give him an extra meal."

Wei Shouzhong: ...

Okay, I don't believe it anymore.

Wei Shouzhong continued without revealing the answer: "Where's the tiger?"

Wei Zhao lowered his eyes.

Wei Shouzhong understood; there was no reason left to boast. He smiled and said, "When we learned that you had been chosen by the Wei family army, your mother and I were truly relieved."

He looked at the tall and imposing Wei Zhao.

"General Wei is a good man."

Wei Zhao smiled.

However, the laugh was tinged with sarcasm.

"is it?"

Wei Zhao: "But good people don't live long."

He said coldly, "Look, he's dead."

Who still remembers him?

These words sounded strange, but Wei Shouzhong didn't think much of it, assuming that Alang was upset about the general.

"Who said that?"

Wei Shouzhong: "The high-ranking officials and nobles in the capital are all deeply grieved by this. The Emperor has even canceled the morning court session."

Wei Zhao remained silent.

I'm too lazy to even mention that those people who went to the capital were the most hypocritical, wearing a mask of feigned kindness.

Yu Tingwan didn't want to eavesdrop on the commotion next door, but she could still hear it clearly.

She was sweeping the snow with great effort, trying to clear her mind, when at that moment, Hui Niang's voice reached her ears.

"Dad, why are some of our bowls missing?"

Yu Tingwan froze: ...

It's with her.

Wei Shouzhong then climbed onto the roof of the kitchen to repair it: "Count them again, you must have forgotten where you put it."

Hui Niang frowned: "How could you have miscounted? We know how many bowls and chopsticks we have at home, and there are already three missing."

She searched inside and out, but couldn't find a trace of him; it was really strange. It couldn't possibly be that a thief had broken into the house.

Yu Tingwan didn't know if the Wei family had been robbed. But she did see several bowls with the Wei character branded on them in the corner of the courtyard wall.

The snow was still falling, and the bowl was covered with snow as thick as fingernails. In one small spot, there was still a thick, brownish liquid.

Yu Tingwan: ? ? ?

Why are they all coming to her yard?
Just as she was thinking that, there was a noise above her head. Yu Tingwan looked up and saw something being thrown from next door.

It finally hit the side of her.

It's a date that's been bitten, and there are teeth marks on it.

Yu Tingwan looked at the bowl and then at the dates, and almost laughed in exasperation.

Meanwhile, Wei Zhao next door frowned as he swallowed the date in his mouth.

Dates are sweet, but he found them tasteless.

He had two left in his hand, but he didn't want to take them or eat them.

Wei Zhao casually tossed the two burdensome things to the next room.

One snowball hit the ground, and another hit Yu Tingwan on the head.

The little girl clutched her head in pain.

You've turned her house into a junkyard, haven't you?
She really wanted to run next door and confront Wei Zhao about why he was picking on her!

But after seeing what hit her, Yu Tingwan felt that she could endure it no longer.

Yu Tingwan picked up a date and took a bite out of spite!
