Chapter 606 The Root of the Problem

Farrell and Metis stood beside her, observing the road riddled with craters.

The faint sounds of arguing and gunshots could be heard from ahead.

One of the sentries complained, "Are they crazy? Are they going to fight us just to stay here?"

"Since they are so unwilling to leave, why not let them stay here?"

“If they stay here, they will become pollutants once the contaminated zone is opened.”

"Then let them become pollutants. We've told them about the consequences; it's their own choice."

Some sentries agreed, while others disagreed.

However, the reasons for disapproval are nothing more than the fear that if they become pollutants, the six northern districts will become new polluted areas.

The current evacuation is to wait until the pollution in the North Second District is reduced so that the North Sixth District can become a safe place to live.

"Could there be some heretics among them, which is why they're deliberately not leaving?"

"That's exactly what the higher-ups thought of, which is why they're forcing an evacuation."

As Yu Xia listened to the sentries' speculations and looked at the ruined road in front of her, she recalled a memory from long ago.

At that time, she and Adar had just come out of the North Second District and had been wandering around the outskirts of the North Second District for a while.

They had also been to the North Sixth District before.

Her memory of this part of the city was somewhat hazy, but she still vaguely remembered what it looked like.

More than a decade has passed, and the six northern districts have remained virtually unchanged.

This is the same road that Adar took her on back then.

She saw familiar road signs and some iconic buildings.

"They can't all withdraw."

Yu Xia turned to look at Metis, who was observing the evacuating crowd with a calm expression. "Even with a forced evacuation, five days wouldn't be enough to get everyone out, and ten days wouldn't be enough either."

After listening, Yu Xia analyzed what the sentries had said and said, "If there are heretics here, even if they deliberately hide, there will still be people left behind during the forced evacuation."

Farrell put his arm around her and said, "I've looked at the manpower the Federation and the Empire have arranged. Even if they delay opening the contaminated zone again, they can only transfer out half of the people at most when the infection reaches its most dangerous level."

Yu Xia looked up at him. "How do you know you can only relocate half the population? What if some people are persuaded and willing to leave?"

Farrell patiently explained to her, "The evacuation operation started a long time ago. Those who wanted to leave have already left. The remaining people are basically being forced to evacuate."

Silver Tooth said, "These people's evacuation point is the Central District. I've investigated. At first, the people who evacuated were enthusiastic. But those who evacuated earlier found life inconvenient and even difficult in the Central District. Many of them returned to the North Six District. Gradually, the people in the North Six District realized that the Central District could not provide them with a good place to live, and they developed a sense of resistance."

"This collective mentality will spread. The Federation cannot guarantee that the Northern Sixth District can be safely preserved. Since it cannot be preserved, there is little point in them leaving."

Yu Xia asked, "But aren't they worried that this will become a pollutant?"

Bello said, "People sometimes have a sense of complacency. North Sixth District is one of the residential areas closest to the contaminated area. They were all relocated from the original contaminated area. After being exposed to the pollution for a long time, they felt that it didn't matter much."

This situation is practically unsolvable; the only option is to relocate as many people as possible.

Yu Xia looked at the vehicles that were evacuating. Besides the sentries, there were also ordinary soldiers protecting the civilians during the evacuation.

Sentinel guides are a very small group; handling the contaminated zones is enough for them, and other tasks must be done by other soldiers. Farrell looked down at her and asked, "If it were you, what would you do?"

Yu Xia: "What?"

Farrell: "How will you arrange things for these people?"

Metis and the others also looked at her, waiting for her answer.

To be honest, Yu Xia couldn't offer a better answer as to how to relocate these people.

The six northern districts have a population of several million, but less than a third of them voluntarily evacuated.

Based on the intelligence she obtained, the people in the North Sixth District were either exhausted by the pollution evacuation, or, as Bello said, they either held onto a sliver of hope that they would not be infected, or they had become numb to the pollution.

But generally speaking, no one wants to live such a turbulent, constantly on edge life.

She looked at the several pairs of eyes waiting for her answer, thought for a moment and said, "Actually, people just want to live a peaceful life. There's nothing wrong with the Federation's arrangements. People's resistance is understandable from their perspective. We can't control people's thoughts. All we can do is our best. What we need to do is address the root of the problem, not the people who are troubled by it."

This is something she has always wanted to accomplish; as long as pollution is curbed, these problems will naturally be solved.

But this is not something she can solve alone.

Metis laughed and said, "That's right. These people are not like us sea people, who can be summoned and responded to with just a word."

Yu Xia said, "If I say one thing, you'll really listen to me?"

She didn't believe it. Right now, these royals were all in their own camps, all wanting to be king. How could they listen to her?

She would be grateful if they didn't betray her, use her to climb the social ladder, or use her against Selius.

Bello: "Your Highness is the Queen, so naturally we will listen to Your Highness."

His words were quite meaningful, and both Silver Fang and Illusion glanced at Farrell.

Metis ruffled Yu Xia's hair with his large hand and laughed, "That's right, little Potty, you are now the Queen of Serius, and soon you will be my Queen. They will all have to listen to us."

Yu Xia chuckled dryly. Metis was as confident as ever. But it was good that he had this confidence; at least he had someone who could rival Farrell.

Farrell ignored Metis's words, grabbed Yu Xia by the waist, and jumped over the large pit in front of him.

Metis watched as Rael held Potti and made a strange "Hmm?" sound.

Huanmeng patted him on the shoulder, "Metis, it seems you need to step up your game."

Metis: "What do you mean?"

Silver Fang glanced at him and followed Yu Xia and the others.

He thought to himself, thankfully the Sea Clan royal family no longer likes to open up their spiritual sea domains because of internal strife, otherwise Metis would already know about Farrell's bond with Potti and that he had joined Farrell's ranks.

Once the balance is broken, they will have to fight before they can even return to the ocean.

This was something Silver Fang had been worried about. Fortunately, Farrell wasn't one to make grand pronouncements; he was very patient and would only bring it up once they returned to the ocean.

Metis quickly caught up with Yu Xia and the others, but he felt that something was off about the two of them.

Farrell knew he wanted to use Potti to climb the social ladder, and he also knew that Potti didn't like Farrell, but seeing the two of them together gave him a strange feeling.
