Chapter 140 The Mastermind Appears
Chapter 140 The Mastermind Appears
The night is deep and the streets of the small town are quiet. Only the occasional sound of the wind seems to tell unknown secrets.
Matt and Hawkeye carefully moved between the abandoned buildings, their footsteps sounding particularly clear on the empty streets.
They first came to the edge of the town, where there was a burned-down residential area. The former warmth and tranquility could still be vaguely seen among the ruins.
Hawkeye used a flashlight to illuminate the front, carefully avoiding stepping on the debris, while Matt was by Hawkeye's side, always paying attention to the movements around him.
"It seems there was a fierce battle here." Hawkeye whispered, noticing some scattered weapons and loudspeakers.
"They must have had a conflict with someone here." Hawkeye added, with a sense of foreboding in his heart.
The two continued walking, passing through the residential area and arriving at the commercial area of the town.
The situation here was even worse, with shops looted, windows broken and door panels roughly removed and thrown aside.
Matt and Hawkeye traveled through the ruins, trying to find any clues related to the cult.
"When I first came back, Laura said she had bought things in the town. Although the streets were not prosperous and the townspeople were not very friendly, they were full of the breath of life."
Hawkeye's voice was low and emotional, as if he could see through the ruins in front of him and see the vibrant town of the past.
Matt nodded but said nothing.
The two continued their search, and every time they passed a store, Matt would listen carefully to what was going on inside the store, hoping to find some useful information.
Hawkeye was more focused on the environment outside the store. He keenly observed the traces on the ground, trying to find subtle clues of cult activities.
"Look this way!" Hawkeye suddenly stopped and pointed to the corner of a shop.
Hawkeye immediately came over and saw some crooked words written in chalk on the corner of the wall: "Lord, save us, I can't bear it anymore!"
Although the handwriting is blurry, it reveals a sense of despair and fear.
Hawkeye's heart sank suddenly. He knew that these words were most likely left by people who were persecuted by the cult. They had no other choice but to ask Yahweh for help.
But why didn't they call the police?
Hawkeye told Matt the content, and Daredevil's anger reached its peak at this time.
This evil cult has forced people to such an extent that it is even worse than those evil gangs.
Today, he must go on a killing spree, and no cultist here will be able to survive!
They walked along the main street of the commercial district, checking every store one by one.
In a seemingly ordinary grocery store, Matt suddenly stopped.
"There's something unusual here," he whispered.
Hawkeye quickly approached, and the light of the flashlight illuminated the place where Matt pointed. There was an area on the floor that was slightly darker in color, as if it was caused by being pressed by heavy objects for a long time.
They worked together to move some scattered shelves away, and found a secret passage hidden underneath. The entrance of the passage was tightly covered by a thick wooden board.
As they went deeper, the air in the passage became increasingly stuffy, and a musty smell filled the air.
Suddenly, Hawkeye stopped and his expression became extremely solemn.
"I heard... whispers."
"Whispers?"
Matt suddenly felt confused. His hearing was many times better than Hawkeye's.
He couldn't even hear the whisper, but Hawkeye heard it?
"Something is wrong there. But I have to go and see."
Faint sounds kept reaching Hawkeye's ears, and Hawkeye clearly recognized that they were the voices of his own children.
In this case, whether it was strange to hear such a sound or not, it looked like a trap no matter how you looked at it.
But he is a father and he can't abandon his child. Even if it is a trap, he has to go and take a look. What if it is true?
Before Matt could reply, Hawkeye walked quickly towards the depths of the passage. Matt didn't understand why, but immediately followed him, feeling worried and alert.
Hawkeye took a deep breath and slowly pushed open the door. The scene in front of him stunned him instantly. This was a spacious basement. The walls were covered with strange totems and symbols. In the center was a huge altar. Several strange candles were burning on the altar, emitting a faint blue light, which made the whole space gloomy. There were children tied up around the altar. Hawkeye, who had sharp eyes, immediately spotted his own child and ran over immediately.
"Children, wake up, wake up, wake up!"
Hawkeye called out anxiously as he tried to untie the ropes that bound the children.
"Dad, where is Mom?"
Hearing the voice of his eldest son Kupper, Hawkeye slowed down the speed of untying the rope and turned his head mechanically.
Hawkeye didn't know how to answer this question, and he had no way to answer it.
"Mom, she has been tied up by the bad guys and taken to another place. After Dad helps you untie the ropes, you can follow this uncle and leave. I will go to save your mom."
Hawkeye pointed stiffly at Matt who had just walked up to him, but the latter's face froze, as if he realized something was wrong.
"You're a liar, Dad! You're a liar!"
Kupper shouted, his voice tearing.
"Where did Dad lie?"
Hawkeye's face was a little stiff, and he spoke in an unnatural tone.
"Dad, Mom is clearly dead!"
Hawkeye's pupils suddenly widened, an indescribable pain and shock surged into his heart, he could hardly believe his ears.
Kupper's words were like a sharp knife, piercing his heart.
"No, that's impossible, Kupper, don't talk nonsense!"
Hawkeye's voice trembled as he tried to deny this cruel fact, but Kupper's next words made it impossible for him to escape.
"Dad, you clearly killed Mom, why don't you admit it?"
Hawkeye's body seemed to be struck by lightning, and he stood still, his eyes filled with disbelief and pain. His lips trembled, and he wanted to refute, but found that he couldn't say a word.
"Kuppel, you...what are you talking about?"
Hawkeye's voice was almost a whisper, and just as he said this, he found that Kupper had his head down and there was no rope on his body. The same was true for the other children.
Their bodies were so cold, they were dead.
"No, no, none of this is real, Matt, tell me, this is an illusion!"
Hawkeye screamed wildly, totally unable to believe what he saw.
"No, Barton, this is not an illusion. Your children are dead."
Although it was cruel, Matt had to tell him the cruel truth in this environment.
"No, Matt, you're lying to me, my baby is not dead!"
Hawkeye roared with red eyes, his nails digging into the flesh.
"I understand, I understand, Matt, you are also an illusion, an illusion used to deceive me!"
"No, he's not an illusion."
In the dark corner, a sturdy figure slowly appeared.
Feeling his breath, Matt turned his head away in disbelief.
"Hawkeye, Daredevil is right, your child is indeed dead."
Kingpin said with a smile.
