Chapter 158 Killing
The imperial city in the distance was looming in the snow, like a dormant beast, staring coldly at the land. The trees swayed in the strong wind, and the branches made a "creaking" sound, as if they would be broken at any time.
General Mu galloped on his horse, the wind and snow blowing in his face, almost blinding him. His cloak had long been soaked by the snow and stuck to his body, the cold seeping into his bones. The horse was panting, white mist was coming out of its mouth and nose, and the snow under its hooves was splashed.
"Go!" General Mu shouted, whipping the horse hard. He knew that he had to rush to Prime Minister Lu's residence as soon as possible to tell him the truth.
However, the wind and snow seemed to be against him. The road ahead became increasingly blurred, and the snow almost buried the horse's hooves. The strong wind rolled up the snow flakes, like an invisible wall, blocking his way.
General Mu's heart sank gradually, and an ominous premonition came to his mind.
Suddenly, the horse stumbled, and its front hooves sank into the deep snow, nearly throwing him off. General Mu grabbed the reins tightly and managed to keep himself steady. A cold wind blew by, bringing a bone-chilling chill. General Mu turned his head sharply, and saw a dark figure slowly walking out of the wind and snow. It was Lu Jing. His dark robe fluttered in the wind.
"General Mu, why are you in such a hurry to travel with such a heavy snowstorm?"
General Mu's heart tightened and he clenched the sword in his hand.
General Mu looked closely and found it was Lu Jing. He was wearing a dark robe and a sword at his waist. His handsome face looked particularly stern under the moonlight. General Mu frowned and his heart was alarmed.
"Lu Jing, get out of the way!" General Mu said in a deep voice, "I have urgent matters to attend to, and I don't have time to bother with you."
Lu Jing did not move at all, with a faint smile on his lips, "What if I refuse to give in?"
General Mu sneered, "What do you want to do in this important place? I am a first-rank military marquis of the dynasty. How dare you, a mere Jinyiwei commander, stop me?"
Lu Jing's smile deepened, but a hint of coldness flashed in his eyes, "General Mu, have you forgotten your grudge against me?"
General Mu's heart trembled, remembering the feud he had with Lu Jing a few months ago because of withholding food and grass. At that time, he relied on his military achievements and did not take Lu Jing seriously, but he did not expect that he would be stopped by him today.
"Grudges?" General Mu sneered, "Lu Jing, what can you do? Do you want to kill me?"
Lu Jing slowly raised his hand and grasped the hilt of the knife at his waist. His voice was as cold as ice, "You are right. I am here to kill you."
Before he finished speaking, Lu Jing's knife had already been unsheathed, and with a flash of cold light, it was aimed directly at General Mu's throat. General Mu reacted very quickly, and suddenly pulled the reins, causing the horse to sidestep to avoid the knife. He jumped off the horse, drew his sword, and confronted Lu Jing.
"Lu Jing, you are crazy!" General Mu shouted angrily, "Killing an official of the imperial court is a capital crime!"
Lu Jing did not answer, but turned his blade and attacked again. His sword skills were sharp and swift, and each move went straight to the vital point. Although General Mu was famous for his military exploits, he had to go all out when facing a master like Lu Jing.
The two men clashed fiercely on the empty street, with swords flashing and sparks flying. General Mu's swordsmanship was powerful and majestic, while Lu Jing's swordsmanship was as erratic as a ghost, making it difficult to predict.
"Lu Jing, why do you want to kill me?" General Mu asked while resisting.
Lu Jing sneered, "General Mu withheld food and fodder, causing countless soldiers on the border to starve to death. I will settle this account with you today!"
General Mu's heart sank, but he still argued: "That was the decision of the court. What does it have to do with me?"
"What does this have to do with you?" Lu Jing's eyes were burning with anger. "You disregarded the lives of soldiers for your own selfish interests. Today, I will enforce justice on behalf of heaven!"
Naturally, he couldn't betray Su Qingwan.
"If you want to stay alive, perhaps you could tell me where you're going in such a hurry?"
"You're dreaming!"
"That's a pity!" After saying that, Lu Jing's attack became more and more fierce. He chopped down with his sword, and General Mu raised his sword to block, but was shocked so much that his palms went numb. Lu Jing took the opportunity to kick General Mu's knee, and General Mu staggered back and almost fell.
General Mu gritted his teeth and steadied himself, secretly shocked by Lu Jing's strength. He knew that if he continued like this, he would definitely lose. So, he swung his sword fiercely, forcing Lu Jing to retreat a few steps, then took out a flare from his arms and fired it into the sky.
"Lu Jing, you can't kill me!" General Mu grinned, "Reinforcements will be here soon!"
Lu Jing looked up at the flares blooming in the night sky, but his expression remained calm. He slowly raised his knife, and the blade glowed coldly in the moonlight.
"Reinforcements?" Lu Jing said calmly, "Unfortunately, they are too late to save you."
Before he finished speaking, Lu Jing's figure approached like a ghost. Before General Mu could react, he felt a chill in his chest. He looked down and saw that Lu Jing's knife had pierced his heart.
"You..." General Mu widened his eyes and looked at Lu Jing in disbelief.
Lu Jing pulled out his knife, blood splattered on his robe. He looked at General Mu coldly as he fell, his voice low and cold, "Rest in peace, General!"
General Mu fell to the ground, his breath gradually weakening. His eyes were filled with reluctance and fear, and finally lost all their luster.
Lu Jing put away his knife and looked up into the distance. In the night sky, the light of the flare had gradually dissipated. He turned and left, looking at Su Qingwan in the snow. The two of them were facing each other from a distance, separated by corpses and snow.
The night was as dark as ink. There were gusts of cold wind on the mass grave. The dead trees swayed in the wind, making a creaking sound, as if countless wronged souls were sobbing. Crows circled on the branches, making shrill cries, and occasionally swooped down to peck at the rotten meat on the ground.
Lu Jing dumped General Mu's body into a mass grave.
"Mass grave is suitable for him." Lu Jing whispered to himself with a hint of sarcasm in his tone.
Su Qingwan was wrapped in a snow-white fox fur coat, her face as pale as snow, standing beside the mass grave, as if she was out of tune with this gloomy environment. Her eyes were as cold as frost, and her gaze fell on General Mu's body, with a complicated expression.
Su Qingwan was silent for a moment, then raised her head and looked at Lu Jing, "You really did it, you really did it. Killing for me, is it worth it?"
Lu Jing curled his lips and looked at her with burning eyes, "What about you? Is your promise valid?"
Su Qingwan met his gaze with a firm expression, "I will never go back on my word."
"Then it's worth it!" Lu Jing's eyes flashed with a smile, but soon returned to their sternness. He took a step closer and stared down at her, "Now can you tell me why you want to kill him?"
Su Qingwan pursed her lips, a trace of hatred flashed in her eyes, "General Mu withheld military pay, causing countless soldiers on the southwest border to starve to death. My brother...almost died in that battle."
She found an excuse, and fortunately, she was pretending to be the Princess of the Southwest King, so she had plenty of excuses.
Lu Jing frowned slightly, "Are you here for revenge?"
Su Qingwan raised her eyes to look at him, with a hint of provocation in her eyes, "What? Do you regret it?"
Lu Jing shook his head and gently stroked her cheek with his hand. His gentleness was completely different from his previous coldness. "For you, I never regret it."
Su Qingwan was slightly startled, her cheeks flushed slightly, but she soon returned to her cold expression. She took a step back, avoiding his hand, "Let's go, I hope no one else saw what happened tonight, otherwise, you will also get into trouble."
Lu Jing's hands were suspended in the air, and a hint of disappointment flashed across his eyes, but was soon replaced by domineering. He took a step forward, forced her under a dead tree, and stared into her eyes, "Princess, you promised to marry me, don't go back on your word."
Su Qingwan smiled lightly and said calmly, "Please ask the emperor to grant me marriage. I agree."
