Chapter 21 The Monkey Leads the Way
Xia Zhi nodded, "Okay, I'm willing to do any mission as long as I can come to the military hospital."

Chen Yang nodded in satisfaction, then readily said, "Okay, as long as you complete the task I assigned you, you can start practicing medicine at my TCM clinic."

Chen Yang whispered something in her ear, and Xia Zhi instantly felt confident. "Thank you, Uncle Chen. Don't worry."

Xia Zhi looked at the group with deep gratitude. After leaving the hospital, she went straight to the cafeteria. After explaining her purpose, the head chef, out of respect for Lu Beiting, readily lent her the kitchen.

Xia Zhi used the limited ingredients and medicinal herbs to make some food.

"Auntie, I've finished cooking. Thank you. I'll treat you to a meal another day."

"Oh, alright, you're too polite, kid." Chen Yan smiled as she looked at her. This girl was instantly endearing. She'd heard that Battalion Commander Lu had changed wives; the previous one…

Chen Yan snorted coldly, "They really have no shame."

When Xia Zhi returned, Lu Beiting and Zhang Yi were talking. When they saw her, they both looked at her.

"Zhang Yi is here too. Haven't eaten yet? Why don't you sit down and grab something to eat?"

Xia Zhi brought out a pot of dark, black stuff. Zhang Yi wanted to go over and see what it was, but after seeing its appearance, he was immediately deterred.

Secondly, a strong smell of Chinese medicine wafted over, causing some discomfort.

"Haha, sister-in-law, I ate before I came. You guys eat first, and after you're done, I'll go with you to the mountain to gather herbs." After saying that, Zhang Yi quietly stepped aside and gave his battalion commander a "good luck" look.

Perhaps fate is fair; although my sister-in-law is skilled in both physical and medical matters, she may still have shortcomings in cooking.

Thinking about how Zhang Yi had been hurt yesterday calmed him down a bit.

Xia Zhi glanced at the food in her hand and said seriously, "Although it doesn't look very appetizing, it doesn't taste very good either."

She ladled out a bowl and placed it in front of Lu Beiting. "Eat up. There's corn porridge after you finish."

It's called corn porridge, but it's just made from some bits and pieces cooked together.

Lu Beiting looked at the thing in her hand, and frowned as he smelled it. After taking it, a look of resistance appeared on his face.

"Drink!" Xia Zhi forcefully pushed the drink towards him, as if she wouldn't give up until he drank it.

Lu Beiting, with a tense expression, still took the drink from her hand. The first sip he took caused his expressionless face to instantly contort.

This thing is more miserable than his life.

"Good medicine tastes bitter, and that's just how it is," Xia Zhi said earnestly. Then she went to the side to ladle out some porridge, took a bite herself, and found it tasted like corn. Fortunately, it wasn't too hard to accept.

She finished her bowl first, and Lu Beiting finished his medicine just as she finished his.

At this moment, Lu Beiting sat on the edge of the bed with a sense of despair. Logically speaking, he had even eaten tree bark, so this stuff should be nothing to him.

But after he finished drinking it, he felt numb all over.

Seeing him like this, Xia Zhi sighed helplessly and went up to him to put a candy in his mouth.

The bitter taste in his mouth disappeared almost instantly. Lu Beiting's face stiffened, and he then stepped back, saying somewhat embarrassedly, "I'm not a child."

“Your expression doesn’t say that.” Xia Zhi handed him the porridge. “Drink up. I’m going up the mountain after you’re done. I can go by myself. You can ask Zhang Yi to heat up the medicine for you later.”

As Xia Zhi spoke, she slipped a few more candies into his hand.

Zhang Yi, standing at the door, watched this scene, biting his lower lip to suppress a laugh. If it weren't for his sister-in-law, he probably wouldn't have had the chance to see the battalion commander in this state.

"Sister-in-law, are you sure you don't need me to go with you?"

"No need, just take good care of your battalion commander." If he came along, things would be difficult for her.

Seeing her firm attitude, Zhang Yi had no choice but to look at Lu Beiting. Lu Beiting glanced at the few candies lying in his palm, then looked up at Xia Zhi. "Okay, then be careful."

"okay."

Xia Zhi picked up her small basket and looked at the empty space by the door, waiting for the day she could set up a small kitchen so she wouldn't have to go to the canteen every day.

Considering Lu Beiting's condition, Li Jianguo arranged for him to be on the first floor, which was on the side, with some empty space on the left side, which could be used properly.

When Xia Zhi arrived at the guard post, she saw Xu Rufeng again. "Squad Leader Xu, I'm going into the mountains."

Xu Rufeng frowned when he saw that she was still alone. Why was the battalion commander letting her go up the mountain alone?

"Xia Zhi, how about I go with you? It's not safe for you to go alone."

Xia Zhi quickly waved her hand, "It's safe, it's very safe, I'll definitely be back before sunset."

Xu Rufeng opened his mouth, but suddenly realized he had no right to speak, so he swallowed his words back. "Then be careful."

Xia Zhi nodded, picked up her small basket, and walked outside.

To avoid encountering Hao Liping's eccentricities again, she deliberately changed direction this time.

Once on the mountain, Xia Zhi easily climbed a tree and lay down, thinking about her next move. Before she knew it, she had fallen asleep.

A moment later, she felt an itch on her face. She quickly opened her eyes and saw a monkey hanging above her, its tail landing on her face.

She quickly sat up. Could it be? Was she really that unlucky to run into someone seeking revenge?
Her gaze met that of the monkey in the tree, but the monkey didn't seem to make any other move. It just looked at her, making noises and gesturing with its hands.

Xia Zhi watched for a while and felt something was strange.

The monkey keeps pointing in one direction. Does that mean it's telling her to go there?

"You mean you want me to go with you?"

Xia Zhi stared in surprise at the monkey in front of her. The monkey seemed to understand what she said, nodding repeatedly before leaping to another branch.

He even waved to her.

Xia Zhi's lips twitched. She wasn't a monkey; how could she possibly jump over there?

After hesitating for a while, she decided to follow them to see if there was any treasure there.

After all, that's how it's written in the novel.

Seeing that she hadn't followed for a while, the little monkey became anxious and turned back, then grabbed her trouser leg and pulled her inside.

"Hey, hey, slow down!" Xia Zhi hurriedly followed, carrying her basket on her back.

As they passed through the woods, bushes, and some loose rocks, Xia Zhi felt uneasy. How did they end up going further and further astray?

Looking at the unfamiliar surroundings, the further I went in, the damper it became, and the denser the woods grew. A chill ran down my spine.

Xia Zhi's face showed a hint of resistance; this was too biased.

Just as she was about to turn back, the little monkey at her feet suddenly stopped and pointed excitedly in the distance.

Xia Zhi gritted her teeth. Since she was already there, she decided to go and see what it was.

With her heart pounding, she stepped across the large rocks in the stream to reach the other side, then parted the grass and saw the scene before her; her breath caught in her throat.
