Chapter 67 The Mountain God's Favor?

On the mountain, Xia Zhi had only been up for a short while when she saw the ball in the tree. The ball saw her and jumped onto her, then started gesturing.

Xia Zhi glanced at Xu Rufeng and the others not far away. Seeing that they weren't paying attention, she quietly followed the ball to the other side, wondering what surprise the little guy had prepared for her.

After walking for a while, the ball jumped up a tree and called out to the little rabbits and monkeys in front of it. The group of little guys quickly made way.

Xia Zhi's eyes lit up when she stepped forward and saw what was on the ground: so much ginseng, black truffles, cordyceps, mushrooms...

"Wow, you guys are amazing, you found so many."

Xia Zhi quickly took some food out of her basket and handed it to them, saying, "Here, this is everyone's reward."

She squatted down and put the items into her basket. When that wasn't enough, she picked up the bag at the bottom of the basket and filled it to the brim. Tomorrow was the town market, and she was determined to sell some of the goods!
After tidying up, Xia Zhi put the basket under the tree and strolled around.

Then I squatted down by a small river. The river flowed downstream, and I didn't know if there were any fish there.

She sat on a rock by the river, looking into the river. After a while, she got up to look again and saw that there were only some small fish fry.

The ball bounced onto her shoulder, scratching its head in confusion. Xia Zhi ruffled its fur twice. "The fish here are so small. It would be nice if there were bigger fish."

After thinking for a moment, the ball tugged at her clothes. Xia Zhi knew this meant she should come with it, so she put on her basket and followed it down the river. The further downstream they went, the more the river gathered.

After walking for about half an hour, she came to a deep pit that had been smashed open, where river water had gathered and was flowing downstream. She walked forward, and in the sunlight, a large fish leaped out of the river.

"Ahhh! Ball, are you some kind of legendary treasure-hunting beast? You're amazing!" Xia Zhi excitedly hugged the ball and kissed its fur.

"Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey, you're shedding a lot, Ball." Xia Zhi brushed the fur from around her mouth.

The ball grunted twice in dissatisfaction, then jumped down to the riverbank and began to bathe.

Xia Zhi couldn't help but smile; this guy was clearly looking down on her.

"Okay, I'll go to the market tomorrow and buy you a big banana."

The ball paused in its hand, then ran happily towards her, rubbing against her legs.

Xia Zhi ruffled the fur on its head, making it all messy. The ball then ran back to wash itself while scratching the fur.

Xia Zhi glanced around and had no choice but to take the contents of her basket out first, and then, with a try-it-out mentality, she began to fish.

The basket had large gaps between the stones, so Xia Zhi wedged it into a suitable crevice and waited nervously. Soon, a fish slithered in. She stood on the stone, held her breath, and lifted the basket.

"Gotcha! Gotcha! Hahaha, what great luck!"

Xia Zhi came up, poured the fish out, put it back in its original place, and began to wait.

Curious, the ball approached the big fish. The fish on the grass splashed twice, which startled the ball so much that its fur stood on end, and it punched the fish a few times.

Xia Zhi stood on the rock and turned around to see this scene, and couldn't help but laugh out loud.

Xia Zhi didn't straighten up until the sun went down. The moment she moved, she gasped in pain.

Looking at the seven or eight big fish on the shore, I felt that my trip had not been in vain.

She walked over, untied the rope from the basket, strung the baskets together, put the mountain produce inside, and with the basket full and several large fish on her back, she laboriously returned the way she came.

The journey here was so easy, but the return trip was just as difficult. Not only was it heavy, but it also blocked the view!

She originally intended to put the basket at the traditional Chinese medicine clinic, but then changed her mind and gave up.

When she finally made it back to the mountain road, she was a complete mess, covered in mud from head to toe.

"Sister-in-law, sister-in-law?" Xu Rufeng and the others, who were about to go back, suddenly saw the person emerging from the woods. Just as they were about to be on guard, they suddenly felt that the person in front of them looked familiar. Upon closer inspection, they realized that it was Xia Zhi.

Xia Zhi took a breath. "Quick, lend a hand."

Xu Rufeng slung his gun over his shoulder and strode forward to take the heavy fish from her shoulder.

Another considerate person helped her take the basket off her back and then lifted the bag off the basket.

With a lightness on her back, Xia Zhi felt as if she had come back to life.

"Sister-in-law, where did you get these fish?" Xu Rufeng looked at him in shock at the fish in his hand. They had never seen such big fish in all the time they had been patrolling the mountains.

Xia Zhi leaned against a tree and wiped the sweat from her face, but the wipe only made her face dirtier.

"I found it down there, but it's a bit out of the way. The rocks there are unstable, and the path is difficult to walk on. It was exhausting."

"Sister-in-law, you're amazing! We've been here for years and we've never caught such a big fish."

“Yes, look at your sister-in-law’s basket, it’s full of good stuff. Uncle Chen didn’t find this much when he came up the mountain before.”

"Wow, sister-in-law, is this ginseng? And this black truffle, wow, it looks so good, it could sell for a lot of money."

Xia Zhi twitched the corners of her mouth. She didn't know where the little ones had found them; she couldn't find a single one.

"I'm going to town tomorrow anyway, so I'll go exchange some money."

After resting for a while, Xia Zhi got up to take back her basket, but the others insisted on helping her carry it, so she had no choice but to follow behind them.

"Sister-in-law, we'll leave it here for now."

Xu Rufeng and his men put the items into the courtyard.

Xia Zhi left one of the smaller fish and handed the rest to him, saying, "Squad Leader Xu, take these to Sister Chen and ask her to make some fish soup for you."

"Sister-in-law, this, this..." Xu Rufeng looked at the several large fish helplessly. Not to mention making soup, they could even eat some meat.

"Take it. Your battalion commander and I can't finish it. Instead of letting it rot, you should take it back and eat it. If you take it back now, you can still make fish soup. Go quickly."

Xia Zhi shoved it into his hand.

Xu Rufeng accepted it, looking at her gratefully, "Then I thank you on behalf of my brothers, sister-in-law."

"Yes, yes, let's go back quickly. You need to eat well to have the energy."

Xu Rufeng and the others looked at her with gratitude, "Thank you, sister-in-law. We'll head back now."

People from several courtyards peeked out and their eyes widened when they saw so many things. How come Xia Zhi always brings so many good things when she goes to the mountains? Why do they go to the mountains all day long and get nothing?

What's wrong? Is the mountain god favoring us?
"Squad leader, why do I feel like there's something strange about your sister-in-law?"

Xu Rufeng frowned and glared at him unhappily, "What's wrong? If you're acting strange, then spit out all the meat you've eaten these past few days. You're really spoiled."

"Hey, hey, no, I just feel like my sister-in-law is just like my mom. Is this what people mean when they say, 'An elder sister-in-law is like a mother'?"

Xu Rufeng choked for a moment. Upon reflection, it seemed that Xia Zhi had indeed been quite good to them. Whenever she had something, she would think of them, the soldiers.

"If you want to be my mother, then so be it. Let's go, there's something good to eat tonight."

Xu Rufeng didn't think anything of it, after all, Xia Zhi was really good to them, and quickened his pace to rush to the cafeteria.
