Chapter 129 Vegetarian

Before Riko became a vegetarian, Yuta Kamei didn't think of her as a special person.

To be honest, when they first met, Kamei Yuta was not attracted to this dry woman, who had an old-fashioned bob haircut, sallow skin, prominent cheekbones, thin lips, and a mean look.

The reason why he married Riko was because she had no special charm and no intolerable shortcomings.

It is because of this that Yuta Kamei feels comfortable. He does not have to feel inferior because of his appearance, nor does he need to use sweet words to please her - being with beautiful women would make him feel uncomfortable.

But to outsiders, Riko has an intolerable shortcoming: her desire for control is too strong.

From small things like her husband's tie to big things like the household expenses, she keeps everything in her hands.

If Yuta Kamei works overtime, she will keep calling the company to urge him until Yuta Kamei returns home.

The colleagues at the company were fed up with this. They all felt sorry for Kamei Yuta. It was obvious that her husband worked diligently in the company to make money to support the family, but his wife did not understand him at all. Every time Kamei Yuta answered the phone, they would loudly mock him. Even if Kamei Yuta covered the microphone and begged them to stop talking, they would think they were helping their "honest and cowardly" colleagues.

Kamei Yuta has always heard such comments as "Kamei-san is meticulous and never makes mistakes", "Yuta works hard and often works overtime until late at night", "I feel relieved to have him in the company"... Gradually, he also thinks that he is such a person.

But in fact, he only worked two hours a day, and spent the rest of the time pretending to work. He sat at his workstation, and his only entertainment was to do crossword puzzles. He enjoyed it very much, and sometimes he would think for two or three hours, and others would think he was racking his brains to process work documents.

When it was late at night, Kamei Yuta deliberately stayed away just to get more overtime pay. When his superiors saw this, they all praised him for his diligence.

Recently, he really didn't want to go home, and he felt more comfortable being alone. Riko kept urging him more and more, and his colleagues said she was being unreasonable and that Kamei Yuta was a coward.

How could a hardworking man marry a henpecked woman?
Yuta Kamei thought the same. Whenever Riko called him these past two days, he would just say "I'm working overtime, I'm too busy" in a cold tone and then hang up the phone. Tonight, he didn't even answer the phone and asked the operator to hang up for him.

It's not like he's fooling around outside, he's busy with work, so it's natural for him not to answer the phone!

By the time everyone clocked out, Yuta Kamei had finished filling in the crossword puzzle in that day's newspaper.

He held the newspaper, closed the doors and windows of the company, and walked downstairs slowly. He was not in a hurry to go home, but went to the post office to send the answer to the newspaper first... If the puzzle was correct, the newspaper would give a mysterious small gift, usually a hot spring travel voucher or something.

After mailing the newspapers, Yuta Kamei went to a convenience store and bought a vegetarian bento.

He knew that Riko had cooked at home, but the dishes did not suit his taste. He sat on the curb, clasped his hands together, and said "Amitabha". Then he felt at ease wasting food, shaved out the meat sauce in the lunch box, and the wild cats rushed to lick it. It was another day of doing good deeds and accumulating virtue.

That’s right, Yuta Kamei doesn’t like eating meat, he prefers vegetarian food.

But Riko only considers her son's taste when cooking. The latter prefers raw and cold meats, such as raw beef, live clams, sashimi, and mustard squid... Whenever there is a family dinner, Kamei Yuta will use his chopsticks for a long time, picking and choosing, but never pick up any food, which inevitably causes Riko to roll her eyes.

After a long time, he no longer liked eating at home and often went to Kimura's house next door to eat.

The meals cooked by Mrs. Kimura were very light, mostly vegetarian, and Yuta Kamei enjoyed them particularly well.

Riko cooked a table of dishes, but she couldn't wait for her husband to come home every day. She couldn't stand it anymore, so she visited Kimura's house next door at mealtime to see what kind of delicacies they ate... But when she walked in, she saw stir-fried cabbage, cold tofu, seaweed miso soup, and a few side dishes that were not as troublesome as making a plate of stewed beef. "Your wife is a great cook. I envy you for marrying such a wife." Kamei Yuta praised other people's wives in front of her while eating and laughing.

Riko couldn't stand it anymore, she overturned the table and turned away.

In fact, Kamei Yuta used to eat meat, he just didn't like the smell. He told Riko about this before, but Riko never took it seriously.

She often said: 'Others can eat, why can't you?', 'You are so old, how can you be so picky about food?', 'It is very hard for me to cook every day, please be a little considerate of me'... Over time, Kamei Yuta was too lazy to say it anymore.

Logically speaking, the situation between them should not have come to this point.

If you ask yourself, Kamei Yuta still has feelings for his wife. That feeling is very light, but very tenacious. Even though they are tired of each other now, Kamei Yuta has never thought about divorce.

Since when did his life become so depressing?
Yuta Kamei chewed the rice numbly. He looked at the traffic passing by, and memories always came to him inadvertently.

He still remembers that rainy night when his son Youliang came back.

From that day on, something began to break and become unbalanced.

Lizi asked Youliang why he sneaked back, but Youliang didn't answer and just smiled at them. They asked several times, but Youliang didn't respond. Lizi couldn't help but slapped her son several times - but Youliang was still smiling, which made them feel cold in their hearts.

The next day, they took Youliang to see a psychiatrist. Family members had to stay away, and the two sat in the corridor, waiting for about ten minutes. In the end, the doctor gave the result that "the child's mental state is normal."

"How is that possible? Don't I know my son?"

Riko didn't believe it, and she argued with him. The doctor had no choice but to ask her what she thought was wrong with Youliang. Riko hesitated and couldn't answer. She turned to her husband for help, but Kamei Yuta turned his head away and chose to remain silent.

In desperation, Riko confessed: They beat and scolded Youliang last night, but the latter did not react at all, just smiled at them strangely. The doctor's face changed slightly, and asked her: "How do you want the child to react?"

Riko choked on her words.

She glanced at her husband again, but he remained silent.

Riko said that children should cry and make noises, not laugh like a piece of wood. So the doctor asked again: "Why do you beat and scold children?" Riko was speechless. She was not right. Youliang did not talk back or quarrel, but just laughed.

The doctor then asked Youliang why he was smiling. Youliang said that he wanted his mother to be happy and stop beating and scolding him, so he forced a smile... The nurses in the hospital heard this and looked at Lizi with a look of condemnation.

Riko fled from the hospital as if running away.

Later, Kamei Yuta thought for a long time before he realized that Riko was angry because she was ignored. But when he figured it out, it was too late. The dam of a thousand miles collapsed because of an ant hole, and his life was already in tatters.
