Chapter 323: Ancient Eight Treasures Cake for All Ages, Spring Has Come for Chinese Scientists (Subscription Plus)
The traditional Eight Treasures Cake was created in the Ming Dynasty by Chen Shigong, a great surgeon of the Ming Dynasty.
It is recorded in his book "The Authentic Surgery" that "after taking it for 100 days, it can lighten the body and resist aging, strengthen the primordial Yang, and nourish the spleen and stomach. Its wonderful effects are hard to describe."
The main ingredients of the pastry are eight traditional Chinese medicinal herbs: Poria cocos, Codonopsis pilosula, Quisqualis quinquefolia, Atractylodes macrocephala, White hyacinth bean, Coix seed, lotus seed and Euryale ferox, plus glutinous rice and white sugar.
The traditional Eight Treasures Cake had a variation during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. The imperial physicians of the Imperial Medical Bureau added ginseng and glutinous rice to it. This was the imperial Eight Treasures Cake of the Qing Dynasty. Compared with the traditional Eight Treasures Cake, this one was much more expensive and was especially praised by Emperor Qianlong, who called it "the best health-preserving cake for a thousand years."
Later, during the reign of Empress Dowager Cixi, she fell ill in the palace because of her fondness for greasy and sweet food. The doctors at the Imperial Medical Bureau improved the recipe of the Eight Treasures Cake by adding malt and lotus root powder. After eating it, Empress Dowager Cixi's condition actually improved. Hence, the Eight Treasures Cake was given another category, called the Female Eight Treasures Cake.
In modern times, rock sugar, honey and milk are added to the Eight Treasures Cake, and the taste is further improved.
However, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners still prefer the traditional Eight Treasures Cake which is more popular among the people.
Bazhen Cake is suitable for people who maintain their health on a daily basis, people with weak spleen and stomach, people with diabetes, frail elderly people, young children with congenital deficiencies, and patients who are weak after illness and have long-term diarrhea.
Finally, it is also suitable for treating symptoms of kidney deficiency such as low back and knee pain and frequent urination at night.
However, not everyone can eat this Eight Treasures Cake.
Because it contains coix seed, pregnant women should not eat it.
Fang Yan took the Eight Treasures Cake, picked up one and took a bite in front of Xiao Liu, slowly savored the flavor, then nodded and said:
"It's delicious. This ancient eight-treasure cake is really well made."
Xiao Liu laughed when he heard it, and said to Fang Yan:
"My wife specializes in making pastries, so she's very good at it."
"Brother Fang, as long as you like it."
Fangyan suddenly realized, no wonder they did such a good job, it turned out they were professionals.
The size is also quite suitable, one bite at a time.
He nodded, gave Xiao Liu a thumbs up and said:
“I like it, it’s really well done.”
Then he handed it to Xiao Liu and asked him to try it himself. Xiao Liu immediately took one and stuffed it into his mouth, chewing it while praising:
"I just said my wife's cooking is delicious."
Jia Dapeng rolled his eyes when he heard this. How can you praise yourself?
"Dapeng, you try one too." Fangyan handed the lunch box to Jia Dapeng.
Jia Dapeng was stunned. He didn't expect that he would have a share.
Fang Yan said to him:
"Share this box with everyone in the store. Anyone who sees it gets a share."
Jia Dapeng received the order, took one and put it in his mouth, then took the lunch box and started distributing it to the people in the store.
He even gave one to each of the two patients who had just entered the room.
The Eight Treasures Cake made by Xiao Liu's wife was exquisite and small. When it was distributed around, everyone got one and there were some left over.
Fangyan asked him to leave it for the store manager Le Miao who had not arrived yet, so that she could also try it.
Xiao Liu gave two boxes, Fangyan kept one box and let everyone eat one box, which is like offering flowers to Buddha.
But Xiao Liu didn't care much about it. Anyway, he had already delivered the things his wife asked him to deliver. As for what Fang Yan would do next, that was Fang Yan's own business.
As the patient came in, Fangyan began another busy morning.
To say that he is busy is not quite accurate. There are obviously many people who are busier than him today. The three assistants have shared a lot of Fangyan's work. Although it seems that the number of patients has not decreased, Fangyan no longer has to worry about many things.
By 11:30 am, when there were no more patients, Fang Yan did not feel his usual tiredness. Instead, he felt like he was back to his first day as a patient.
It turns out that having more assistants is really useful.
Fangyan feels that his habits are becoming a habit.
After I leave Tongrentang, there won’t be any assistants to serve me.
But now that someone is using it, just enjoy it. We can talk about the future later.
After a while, it was time to get off work. Fang Yan changed into a white coat and was about to go out when he saw Xie Guolai, Jia Dapeng, and Xiao Liu all running to the door.
When Fangyan got on his bike and was about to leave, the three of them bowed to him in unison.
Fangyan almost couldn't hold back his laughter after seeing this. These three people even want to roll this up?
After saying goodbye to them, Fangyan rode his motorcycle back home.
On the way back, Fangyan found a new banner hanging on the road: "Celebrating the convening of the National Science Preparatory Conference at the Capital Gymnasium!"
Fangyan then remembered that today the invited scientists from all over the country, including his father and father-in-law, had started a meeting.
You can also hear radio news in the alleys on the road, saying that this conference is the first scientific planning conference. The leader delivered an important speech at the opening ceremony of the conference, elaborating on the important argument that science and technology are productive forces and scientific and technological workers are laborers.
The conference was prepared by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Defense Science and Technology Commission.
Fangyan remembers that at this conference, writer Xu Chi's reportage "Goldbach's Conjecture" was published. After it was published in the January 1978 issue of "People's Literature", the protagonist of his reportage, Chen Jingrun, became known throughout the country for a while.
After this conference, the "Spring of Chinese Science" will also be ushered in.
"Respect knowledge, respect talents. Building a country means engaging in science, education and talents." This is the point repeatedly emphasized at this conference.
The official start of “setting things right” also began with the scientific section of this conference.
After this conference, there will be major changes in some leadership positions in the university.
Maybe my dad or father-in-law will give it a push.
Fang Yan remembered that even Professor Wang Yuchuan was influenced by this conference and was transferred to become the vice president of Capital University of Chinese Medicine at the beginning of next year.
News broadcasts about the conference could be heard in dialects along the way.
When he got home, Fangyan saw his mother and elder sister sitting in front of the TV, watching the opening speech of the conference at noon.
As soon as Fang Yan entered the room, he heard his mother-in-law pointing at the TV and excitedly saying to Zhu Lin:
"Linlin, I saw your dad!"
"Where?" Zhu Lin looked puzzled.
"There was a flash on TV just now and I saw it." said the mother-in-law excitedly.
At this time, the old lady also slapped her thigh and stood up:
"Hey, I saw Lao Fang too!"
This time the picture stayed for two seconds, and the appearance of father Fang Zhenhua appeared clearly on the TV screen.
Not to mention, it's quite photogenic.
I turned around and asked my elder sisters Fang Jie and Fang Yan:
"Did you see that?"
"Yeah, I saw it." Fang Yan nodded in response.
The eldest sister also nodded.
Even my eldest brother-in-law said he saw it.
Little Zhao Mingzhu also ran to the bottom of the TV cabinet, stood on tiptoe to look at the side of the TV, and asked curiously:
"Why did grandpa end up on TV?"
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone burst into laughter.
PS: After finishing this chapter, I still owe you 13,000.
