Chapter 454 The new emperor ascends the throne and posthumously honors Liu Bei as Emperor Zhaowu, the Ancestor of Hanzhong.

Rain and snow fell heavily, and the cold was bone-chilling.

As Li Yi's lonely and heavy figure slowly emerged from the desolate and bleak depths of the Peach Garden.

The courtiers, who had been kneeling outside the garden, anxiously awaiting the final news, all involuntarily held their breath.

Snowflakes landed on his gray hair and dark robes, melting quickly.

It left dark water stains, like silent tear stains.

His face was expressionless, showing neither grief nor panic.

There was only one sense of solemnity and sorrow, as if it bore the weight of the entire Mount Tai.

He stopped in his tracks.
His gaze slowly swept over the faces of those before him, some old, some in their prime, all pale with worry and fear.

Then, he spoke in an unusually calm voice, as if he had exhausted all his strength.

It clearly announced the news that everyone had long anticipated, yet still didn't want to hear:
"His Majesty... has passed away."

These five short words were like a thunderclap from the heavens.

It exploded in everyone's heart!
In an instant, it seemed as if only the howling of wind and snow remained in the world.

And that brief, deathly silence.

Immediately, as if a dam had collapsed, an immense grief and despair surged forth!

"His Majesty--!"

"The late emperor—!"

They were led by Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhao Yun.

All civil and military officials, whether sincere or not.

At this moment, they all prostrated themselves on the ground, wailing and weeping!

The cries were deafening, mingling with the howling of the wind and snow.

The echoes reverberated through the empty palace gardens.

It was filled with the bewilderment of a country that had lost its ruler and endless sorrow.

Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were so distraught that they beat their chests and stamped their feet, almost fainting.

If it weren't for the person next to me supporting me, I would have almost collapsed to the ground.

Liu Shan had already collapsed to the ground in tears and was barely helped up by the eunuchs.

……

The following day, Liu Bei had already given instructions for his final affairs in public at the Peach Garden before his death.

His words were clear and distinct, and all the ministers heard them with their own ears.

Therefore, no separate written will was left.

Although this was unconventional, under the joint leadership of Li Yi and Zhuge Liang, no one dared to question it.

Li Yi, suppressing his grief, summoned Zhuge Liang and the main officials of the Ministry of Rites.

They discussed the funeral arrangements in the main hall of the Prime Minister's residence.

His face was haggard, and his eyes were bloodshot, but his tone remained steady and strong:
"Kongming, His Majesty's affairs after his death concern the state and the hearts of the people."

"...There must be absolutely no negligence."

"A ceremony must be held for His Majesty in strict accordance with the highest royal protocol..."

"A grand and glorious burial befitting his achievements."

"You are fully responsible for this matter."

"You need to oversee all the processes, regulations, and expenses."

Zhuge Liang, too, wore a sorrowful expression. Upon hearing this, he solemnly cupped his hands, his voice hoarse yet resolute:

"Rest assured, Lord Yu, I will do my utmost."

"So that His Majesty may pass away in glory and dignity."

"To comfort His Majesty's spirit in heaven, and to put the minds of all his subjects at ease!"

On that day, the royal family began the initial "small encoffining" ceremony.

Inside Liu Bei's palace, there was his most trusted attendant Cen Hun, as well as the empress and several principal concubines.

He personally gave the already cold dragon body a final treatment.

They bathed His Majesty in warm, fragrant water.

He carefully combed his gray, dull hair and trimmed his nails.

Then they changed him into a dark-colored formal suit with subtle patterns that he often wore when he was alive.

Rather than the heavy and elaborate imperial robes.

This may also reflect Liu Bei's desire for a peaceful life before his death.

At the same time, the cabinet quickly drafted the obituary document.

It was sent to all prefectures and counties across the country by express courier, which travels 600 li per hour.

The document proclaims to the world:

"Your Majesty the Emperor of the Great Han Dynasty, with a heavy heart, tearfully announces to all your subjects:"

"His late father, the Emperor of the Great Han Dynasty, was a man of great talent and martial prowess, inheriting the glory of his ancestors, Emperor Gaozu and Emperor Shizu."

"It began in humble beginnings, and endured wind and rain."

"Suppress the villains and quell the chaos."

"He revived the Han Dynasty three times, and his achievements were unparalleled throughout the world."

"But Heaven was not merciful and suddenly sent down a great calamity."

"On the 20th day of the 12th month of the 19th year of Zhangwu, the late Emperor passed away, leaving behind his subjects."

"Alas!!"

"From this day forward, the entire nation shall observe a period of mourning."

"All officials with a rank equivalent to 200 shi or above are required to wear white mourning clothes."

"For one month, weddings and celebrations will be banned nationwide."

"No events may be held in Kyoto or Luoyang within one year."

"For weddings, all the palace officials and servants removed their elaborate decorations and replaced them with plain white silk."

"May all subjects of the realm share this grief and mourn the late Emperor together!"

Once the imperial edict was issued,
The city of Luoyang, which was originally bustling with activity due to the approaching New Year, was instantly shrouded in a somber and white atmosphere.

All the shops removed their red decorations and replaced them with white banners.

Officials all changed into mourning clothes made of hemp.

Although not forced, many people spontaneously hung white cloths in front of their doors to show their condolences.

Inside the palace, it was as if it were covered in ice and snow.

As far as the eye could see, there was only a blinding white.

Several days after Liu Bei's death, under the careful organization of Zhuge Liang,

A more solemn and dignified "funeral" ceremony was held in the main hall of Weiyang Palace.

All the civil and military officials were dressed in the most solemn mourning clothes.

They knelt in order of rank on the steps outside the palace and on the square.

Inside the hall, Liu Bei's body had been carefully moved into the prepared vessel, meticulously carved from a massive piece of golden nanmu wood.

The coffin, inside and out, is decorated with lacquer and painted with images of the sun, moon, stars, mountains, rivers, and deities.

At this moment, Liu Bei had already changed into the highest-ranking imperial burial attire—

The robe was adorned with twelve imperial symbols, and consisted of a black upper garment and a crimson lower garment.

The embroidery depicts twelve chapters, including the sun, moon, stars, mountains, dragons, and pheasants.

It symbolizes the supreme virtue and power of the emperor.

He wore a twelve-tassel crown, and the jade beads hanging down covered his peaceful but lifeless face.

He held a crystal-clear jade cicada in his mouth.

It symbolizes the immortality of the spirit, its transformation and rebirth.

Holding a pair of warm, smooth jade pigs tightly in one's hands symbolizes that one can also be prosperous and healthy in another world.

When placing the burial goods, Li Yi stepped out from the crowd.

He held two ancient-looking longswords in his hands.

It was the pair of swords, one male and one female, that accompanied Liu Bei through half his life of battles and was later bestowed upon Li Yi.

He walked to the coffin and gazed at his old friend's remains with a complex expression.

His voice, deep and clear, addressed the people around him:
"Gentlemen, look, this is the pair of swords that His Majesty personally bestowed upon me when we were in Xuzhou."

His Majesty said at the time, "I hope Ziyu will wield this sword and help me to sweep away the wicked and bring peace to the world!"

"...Now, thanks to His Majesty's divine might and the bravery of all the soldiers."

"The world is at peace, and the land is calm..."

"The mission of these two swords has been accomplished..."

"Today, I... shall return this sword to His Majesty..."

"May His Majesty, even in the netherworld, upon seeing these relics, still recall those bygone days..."

"The years we fought side by side, sharing life and death..."

After saying this, he solemnly placed the double-edged sword gently beside Liu Bei.

The cold blade of the sword contrasted sharply with the magnificent robes and the warm, lustrous jade.

It seems to silently tell the legendary tale of a pioneering enterprise, filled with the clash of swords and the sweeping spirit of a thousand miles.

In addition, a large number of exquisite jade bi discs, jade cong tubes, jade gui tablets and other ritual objects were placed inside the coffin.

And some of the things that Liu Bei liked to play with during his lifetime.

Such as a rhinoceros horn counting rod that he often used to deduce military formations, and an old seal engraved with "Seal of Marquis of Hanshou".

A large number of jade artifacts were buried with the deceased.
It also embodies the simple wish of people at that time to use the spirituality of jade to protect the body from decay.

Since Liu Bei's death, the mourning in the palace has never ceased.

According to the rites, the Empress, Crown Prince Liu Shan, all the princes, princesses, and all the concubines in the harem were present.

They must mourn day and night before the spirit tablet, a practice known as "keeping vigil."

They were dressed in coarse hemp mourning clothes and sat on the ground.

The crying was sometimes loud and sometimes soft, though it contained elements of etiquette.

But the sorrow contained within is also genuine.

All officials of sufficient rank in the capital were required to enter the palace every morning.

Perform "crying at the designated location".

This refers to regularly and systematically weeping and worshipping as a way to express grief.

According to ancient rites, the emperor's coffin was called "Zigong" and was not buried immediately.

Instead, the body needs to be kept in the main hall for a considerable period of time, ranging from several months to nearly a year.

Members of the royal family, civil and military officials, princes and even foreign envoys came to worship and pay their respects.

However, Li Yi knew that the country could not be without a ruler for even a day.

One should not remain immersed in excessive grief for too long, causing one to stagnate.

After a secret discussion with Zhuge Liang and several key ministers
Despite strong opposition, he decided to significantly shorten the period of mourning.

He said to the crowd at a small meeting:
"His Majesty's passing has brought grief to the entire nation."

"This is human nature and common sense, and it is also the duty of a subject."

"However, Your Majesty's lifelong ambition is to restore the Han Dynasty and bring peace and happiness to the people."

"If grief leads to the neglect of state affairs and turmoil in the court, wouldn't that go against Your Majesty's original intention?"

"Furthermore, the country relies on a long-term ruler, and the crown prince needs to be enthroned as soon as possible to reassure the people."

"Therefore, I believe that the period of mourning should be shortened as appropriate."

"This will allow His Majesty to be laid to rest sooner, and also ensure a smooth transfer of power and stability for the nation."

"This is not out of disrespect, but for the sake of the foundation Your Majesty has laid."

Although the crowd felt that it was slightly improper, they took into account Li Yi's prestige and the reasonableness of his words.

Furthermore, since Liu Bei had already publicly entrusted his affairs after his death, they all expressed their agreement.

Another important matter during the period of mourning was to determine Liu Bei's posthumous title.

The posthumous title is a final assessment of an emperor's merits and demerits throughout his life, and is of paramount importance.

It needs to be determined as soon as possible so that items such as spirit banners and memorial flags can be made.

Officials from the Ministry of Rites gathered to discuss the matter, and everyone expressed their opinions.

Some suggested the name "Huan," taking its meaning from the idea of expanding territory, subduing distant lands, and being respectful and diligent towards the people.

Some suggested the name "Jing" because it signifies righteousness, integrity, and admirable virtue.

Some have suggested using the character "烈" (liè), meaning "fierce" or "heroic," to signify meritorious service in bringing peace to the people and upholding virtue and respect for one's profession.

The debate continues, and no conclusion can be reached.

Ultimately, Li Yi personally went to the place of discussion.

After listening to everyone's opinions, he pondered for a long time before slowly saying:

"What you gentlemen have said is all reasonable."

"However, in my opinion, Your Majesty's life can be summarized in the two words 'Zhao' and 'Wu'."

"Zhaowu" is an extremely beautiful posthumous title.

In the system of posthumous titles, "昭" is a top-level commendatory term.

The phrase "圣闻周达曰昭" describes the emperor's wisdom and sagacity.

His reputation spread far and wide, and his virtuous governance was widely known.

The phrase "容仪恭美曰昭" describes the emperor's dignified appearance and virtuous character.

"Mingde Yougong" means to possess both bright virtue and outstanding achievements.

This is precisely an inheritance of Liu Bei's benevolence and reputation throughout his life.

"Martial arts" is the highest affirmation of his martial arts skills.

To quell chaos and disorder is called martial prowess; it means to use force to quell the chaos and disorder in the world.

This is the most fitting praise for a monarch who ended the chaos of the Three Kingdoms period and reunified the country.

At the same time, being strong and upright is called martial.

Liu Bei was a man of strong character and upright conduct.

Therefore, in Li Yi's view...

The posthumous title "Zhaowu" perfectly encapsulates Liu Bei's image as a perfect emperor who "possessed sage-like virtue within and pacified the chaotic world without."

Everyone listened quietly.

Li Yi continued:
The Book of Posthumous Titles states: "A person of dignified and beautiful appearance is called Zhao; a person of outstanding virtue and merit is called Zhao; a person whose sagacity and reputation are widespread is called Zhao."

"Your Majesty is gentle and courteous in your dealings with others; this is the beauty of your appearance."

"He spread virtue and bestowed benefits, served diligently and loved the people, and revived the Han Dynasty. This is the merit of his virtuous deeds."

"To readily accept good advice and to have keen insight is the mark of a wise and discerning person."

"The single character '昭' is enough to demonstrate His Majesty's benevolence and wisdom."

The crowd looked at each other, all agreeing that what Prime Minister Li said made a lot of sense.

Li Yi paused, then his tone became firm and resolute:

"However, Your Majesty's achievements cannot be accomplished solely through benevolence and virtue!"

"Starting from Zhuojun, they fought battles in the north and south."

"Break the Yellow Turbans, resist the two Yuan brothers, recover Hebei, and pacify Jingzhou."

"Destroy Wu and conquer Wei, then unify the world!"

"Such formidable martial arts skills are unprecedented and unparalleled throughout history!"

"Without the word 'martial,' how can Your Majesty's great talent and strategic vision be demonstrated?"

"How can we match his magnificent feat of sweeping away the world and rebuilding the land?"

"Therefore, I suggest that the posthumous title be 'Zhaowu'!"

"Emperor Zhaowu..."

As everyone carefully considered this posthumous title, they felt that the character "昭" (Zhao) perfectly embodied his benevolence, wisdom, and profound understanding of the Way.

The character “武” fully affirms his illustrious military achievements and great cause of unification.

The combination of these two elements aptly summarizes Liu Bei's life.

It is neither overly exaggerated nor derogatory in the slightest; it can be described as fair and just.

Seeing that Li Yi had already made his decision, and that this posthumous title was indeed appropriate.

The ministers had no further objections and bowed in unison, saying:

"Prime Minister Li's insight is brilliant! The posthumous title 'Zhaowu' truly best reflects the late emperor's achievements and virtues!"

"I second the proposal!"

"I second the proposal!!"

Therefore, Liu Bei's posthumous title was set as "Zhaowu".

Soon, on the huge white spirit banner and inscription banner,
The words "Coffin of Emperor Zhaowu of the Great Han Dynasty" were embroidered on it, fluttering in the cold wind.

The period of mourning ended, and the day of the funeral finally arrived.

The ceremony was so grand that it was considered the epitome of a state funeral.

Before dawn, the elite Imperial Guards had already cleared the streets and opened the way.

They were all dressed in plain white armor and held white banners.

They stand solemnly on both sides of the imperial road, stretching for dozens of miles.

Zhao Yun personally wore mourning clothes and rode a white horse.

He led the ceremonial guard ahead, his face filled with grief.

However, their eyes were sharp as lightning to ensure the ceremony went perfectly.

The massive funeral procession slowly drove out of the palace.

At the very front was a massive procession symbolizing Liu Bei's achievements and status, including various carriages such as the jade carriage, the gold carriage, and the elephant carriage, all decorated in plain white.

In addition to canopies, banners, weapon racks, etc.

Though all the splendor has been stripped away, only pure white remains.

However, its scale and regulations all demonstrate the majesty of the emperor.

Crown Prince Liu Shan, as the chief mourner, wore the coarsest hemp mourning clothes.

Holding a mourning staff, he was supported by a palace attendant.

They walked unsteadily before the enormous coffin, their cries never ceasing.

Li Yi then led Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and other civil and military officials.

They were all dressed in white mourning clothes and followed on foot behind the coffin.

The procession was vast and mighty, like a giant white dragon, slowly crawling along the straight Imperial Street of Luoyang.

Before the coffin, the huge banner bearing the words "Coffin of Emperor Zhaowu of the Great Han Dynasty" pierced the eyes of every onlooker.

Along the way, the people of the capital were required to kneel by the roadside to bid farewell to their emperor.

Many people also came spontaneously, their faces filled with sorrow, some even sobbing softly.

The procession would pause at each city gate and bridge it passed through.

A simple memorial ceremony was held, with libations and incense offered to comfort the departed souls.

The mausoleum was located at the foot of Beiman Mountain in Luoyang.

It was started many years ago.

Its scale is based on the original mausoleum of Emperor Guangwu, but it is even more magnificent.

This is to highlight Liu Bei's unparalleled achievements in "three restorations of the Han Dynasty".

The entire mausoleum covers a vast area, including above-ground buildings such as the sleeping quarters, side halls, and ancestral temples.

And the deep underground palace.

After several hours, the funeral procession finally arrived at the cemetery.

Amidst solemn and dignified ceremonial music, the enormous coffin was erected by hundreds of carefully selected warriors.

Shouting low chants, they walked along the paved slope.

Slowly sinking into that deep, dark underground palace, which seemed to lead to another world.

The burial chamber had already been prepared, with burial goods including precious jade artifacts and a pair of swords (one male and one female) inside the coffin.

It also includes a large number of bronze ritual vessels, replicas of terracotta warriors, bamboo slips, and bundles of silk brocade.

And a painting titled "The Great Han Dynasty Landscape and State Map," which Liu Bei cherished greatly during his lifetime and was personally painted by Li Yi.

It symbolizes the magnificent land he revived and left behind.

After the coffin was securely placed on the coffin bed in the center of the burial chamber,
All the officials and members of the imperial family who participated in the burial were once again led by Liu Shan and Li Yi.

At the entrance to the underground palace, towards the depths of darkness.

They performed the grand ceremony of three kneelings and nine kowtows to bid their final farewell.

After the ceremony, the craftsmen stepped forward.

Use pre-prepared boulders weighing thousands of kilograms.

The tomb entrance was sealed off piece by piece.

The gaps were carefully filled with mortar mixed with rice paste and special clay.

The dull thud of the boulders rubbing and colliding felt like it was striking everyone's heart.

It heralded the complete end of an era.

Ultimately, the tomb entrance was completely sealed.

Subsequently, a large amount of soil was transported in and used to cover it.

Gradually, it piled up into a majestic mound—

This is the final resting place of Emperor Zhaowu, Liu Bei, at Zhaowu Mausoleum.

The burial ceremony has now officially concluded.

However, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei seemed to have had their souls ripped out.

Kneeling before the mausoleum, stroking the cold tombstone, I wept bitterly.

He was reluctant to leave for a long time.

Zhang Fei banged his head on the ground, blood and tears mingling on his forehead, as he screamed hoarsely:

"Brother! How can you bear to go alone!"

"How lonely my brothers are in this world!"

"Brother--!"

Although Guan Yu did not react as fiercely as Zhang Fei, tears still streamed down his face, and his whole body trembled.

The suppressed grief seemed all the more profound.

Looking at his two deeply devoted brothers, Li Yi felt a pang of sorrow in his heart.

He sighed, called Guan Xing and Zhang Bao to his side, and whispered his instructions:

"Xing'er, Bao'er, you two stay here and take good care of the two generals."

"They are so grief-stricken that they fear it will harm their health."

"Don't try to dissuade them, just stay by their side and protect them."

"Once he calms down a bit, we can then persuade him to go back home and rest."

"Remember, do not let them do anything rash."

Guan Xing and Zhang Bao, their eyes also filled with tears, bowed and replied:

"Your nephew understands! He will certainly protect Father's safety. Please rest assured, Your Majesty!"

Li Yi then turned around and addressed the equally exhausted and sorrowful officials behind him:
"Gentlemen, you have been working hard for days and are exhausted both physically and mentally."

"His Majesty has been safely laid to rest. This matter is settled, everyone..."

"Let each of you return to your residences and rest for now."

"Take care of your health so that you can continue to serve your country."

Zhuge Liang approached Li Yi, looked at Guan Yu and Zhang Fei who were still kneeling and weeping before the tomb, his face showing worry, and asked in a low voice:
"Lord Yu, Yunchang, Yide, and the others..."

Li Yi waved his hand, looking at his two grief-stricken brothers, his tone filled with understanding and helplessness:
"Let them...cry."

“Keeping it inside only hurts more.”

Some pain can only be washed away by tears...

"With Guan Xing and Zhang Bao nearby, it's alright."

"They will understand when they have cried enough and are tired of crying."

"Those who are alive must continue to move forward..."

At this moment, Crown Prince Liu Shan, supported by a palace attendant, also came over.

His face was pale, and his voice was weak as he asked Li Yi:

"Father...Father Emperor...has been buried."

"According to the rites, should we... immediately bestow a temple name upon Father Emperor?"

"To be enshrined in the ancestral temple and to receive sacrifices from future generations?"

Li Yi looked at the new emperor who was about to inherit the throne but was clearly not ready, and said in a deep voice:

"Your Highness, the matter of temple name is related to etiquette and law, and is therefore indispensable."

"Officials from the Ministry of Rites will begin discussions shortly."

"However, before that, there is something even more important..."

He paused, then looked intently at Liu Shan, his tone extremely solemn:
"...A country cannot be without a ruler for a single day."

"His Majesty has passed away. The Crown Prince must ascend the throne as soon as possible to stabilize the country and reassure the people."

"During this period, there will be special officials to teach you the proper etiquette and procedures for the coronation ceremony."

"You need to focus on your studies and prepare yourself."

"This... is the most important national matter at present, and it is also a major event that the world is watching closely."

"There must be absolutely no mistakes, understand?"

Upon hearing this, Liu Shan's body trembled slightly.

He knew all too well the heavy responsibility that the throne of the supreme ruler represented.

He lowered his head, took a deep breath, and tried to make his voice sound calmer:
"I... understand."

"I will definitely study diligently."

"I will live up to the expectations of...the Prime Minister and all the ministers."

……

The lingering chill of winter finally dissipated completely in a few drizzling spring rains.

The fragrance of earth mingled with the scent of newly sprouted grass and trees, permeating the city of Luoyang.

Spring seems to have come earlier this year than usual.

It also carries more expectations and anxieties.

Even as the solemn atmosphere of national mourning had not completely faded, a grand ceremony concerning the future direction of the empire was held—

Preparations for the new emperor's coronation ceremony are already in full swing.

On an auspicious day, banners fluttered in the front hall of Weiyang Palace.

Although the national mourning period was not long ago, the ceremonial guards were all plain and simple, without any extravagant decorations.

But the solemnity and majesty of imperial power appeared all the more profound and weighty.

The 30-year-old Crown Prince Liu Shan wore an elaborate and solemn robe with twelve imperial symbols and a crown with twelve tassels.

Amidst solemn and dignified music, and witnessed and surrounded by a host of trusted ministers, including Li Yi, Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, as well as civil and military officials, the orphan was laid to rest.

He stepped onto the supreme imperial steps and officially ascended the throne.

The following year was designated as the first year of Jianxing, signifying "the beginning of a new era of revival".

After ascending the throne, the usual honors and rewards were bestowed.

This was to demonstrate the new dynasty's spirit and to appease various factions.

Liu Shan first honored his birth mother, Liu Bei's empress, Yuan Ying, the elder sister of Yuan Ying, as Empress Dowager.

They moved to Changle Palace to live out their retirement.

He posthumously honored Lady Gan as "Empress Zhaowu" and buried her with Liu Bei, thus fulfilling her mourning honors.

He appointed Crown Princess Zhang Xingcai as Empress and made her the head of the Jiaofang Palace.

At the same time, titles were conferred upon his sons:
The emperor appointed his eldest son, Liu Xuan, as crown prince, and he resided in the Eastern Palace.

The second prince, Liu Yao, was appointed as the Prince of Anding.

The third prince, Liu Cong, was made the King of Xihe.

The fourth prince, Liu Gong, was named the Prince of Xinping.

The fifth prince, Liu Chen, was made the Prince of Beidi.

This arrangement not only strengthens the foundation of the nation but also reassures the sons.

Because Zhang Xingcai was made empress,
His father, Grand Marshal Zhang Fei, was naturally of unparalleled honor.

He was specially honored as "Father-in-law of the Emperor" by Liu Shan.

Although it was not an official title, its extraordinary status was self-evident.

Next came the fulfillment of the late Emperor Liu Bei's dying wish.

The two most important regents were given special honors.

Liu Shan publicly announced the imperial edict during the court assembly:

"To your Prime Minister, Marquis of Langya, Zhuge Liang."

"Loyal in heart, elegant in mind."

“He received the mandate from the late emperor and assisted me in governing. His meritorious deeds have shone throughout the world.”

"Now I hereby bestow upon you the Nine Bestowments to honor your meritorious service and to ensure your eternal support as a vassal state!"

The imperial edict detailed the items to be granted by the Nine Bestowments:
Carriages and horses, clothing, musical instruments, vermilion doors, imperial steps, tiger guards, axes and halberds, bows and arrows, and black millet wine.

The idea of bestowing the Nine Bestowments upon Zhuge Liang had been discussed long before Liu Bei's death, but it was only at this moment that it was formally implemented under Liu Shan.

This was both to fulfill the late emperor's last wish and to demonstrate the new emperor's clear reliance on and attempt to win over Zhuge Liang.

However, the pinnacle of glory.

It still belongs to Li Yi, who is now semi-retired, yet whose existence no one dares to ignore.

Liu Shan continued to proclaim the edict, his voice carrying a barely perceptible hint of awe.

"To Grand Marshal and General, Duke of Protector of the State, Li Yi."

"His achievements are unparalleled, and his virtue is highly respected."

"He was the late emperor's right-hand man, and also my father-in-law."

"His founding achievements are unparalleled."

"His service in assisting the government has benefited the people."

"Although there was a previous proposal for ten bestowals, it should now be implemented."

"He is hereby awarded the honor of receiving ten bestowed titles, and his extraordinary achievements will be forever commemorated in the Lingyan Pavilion!"

This tenth bestowal was particularly special, as explicitly stated in the imperial edict:

"...Please take a seat."

“Special seats are set up during court assemblies.”

"When facing me, you may sit and speak without standing or speaking."

Thus, the honor of receiving ten bestowed titles was fully established.

They are:
Carriages and horses, golden chariots and grand carriages, imperial horses and dragons galloping.

They were granted the highest-level entourage, symbolizing that they could "travel the world on behalf of others".

They possessed authority comparable to that of an emperor.

The clothes were a royal robe and red shoes.

He bestowed upon the monarch a crown, dragon robe, and ceremonial shoes in the standard style.

It symbolizes that he could "share the same clothes" as the emperor and jointly govern the world.

The music of the suspended pavilion and the dance of the eight rows of dancers.

He was granted an orchestra that used chime bells and chime stones with three or four sides, and a dance of imperial specifications.

It symbolizes that it can "establish rites and create music" and has a supreme cultural status.

Vermilion doors, vermilion palace steps, nine layers of gates.

The mansion was granted the use of vermilion gates.

This is the exclusive color of the royal palace, symbolizing the noble status of its residence, akin to that of the imperial palace.

He ascended the nine-tiered steps to receive the emperor's favor.

They were granted the privilege of having high steps built in front of the palace, or the privilege of directly ascending to the palace steps.

It symbolizes their high status, allowing them to directly reach the ears of the emperor.

Tiger Warriors, three hundred armored soldiers, and Tiger Warriors as attendants.

The emperor was granted the imperial guards as his personal bodyguards, symbolizing that he had absolute military protection and personal safety.

Axes and halberds, axes, halberds, bows and arrows, used exclusively for warfare and slaughter.

They were granted axes and halberds, symbols of the power to wage war.

It possesses full military power to suppress internal rebellions and wage war against external enemies.

Bows and arrows, red bows and mysterious arrows, conquering all directions.

He was given a red bow and black arrows, signifying that he possessed the power to represent the emperor in punishing disobedient subjects.

The black bean curd wine, a black bean curd wine vessel, with a jade tablet and a zan as its adornments.

They bestowed upon him fragrant wine and a jade spoon for the sacrificial ceremony.

It symbolizes that he can preside over the highest-level national sacrifices and communicate with heaven and earth.

The tenth tin, a seat.

Seats were set up in the hall, where people sat and discussed philosophy.

They were granted a special seat in the court and were not required to stand when addressing the emperor.

The tenth inscription, "a seat of honor," represents the pinnacle and culmination of the entire system.

It no longer bestows any external gifts, but directly bestows a state and a qualification—

A political privilege that is almost equal to that of a monarch.

This perfectly embodies the state of being "at the pinnacle of a minister's position, with no further rewards to offer."

This is an unprecedented and extraordinary opportunity!
In the imperial court, where the etiquette between the emperor and his subjects was extremely particular, seats were granted to the subjects.

Not having to stand before the emperor is more than just an honor.

It is also a kind of respect that is almost equal.

This symbolizes that his status has surpassed that of an ordinary subject, reaching the realm of "teacher of the emperor."

Li Yi remained calm, stepped forward to express his gratitude, and accepted the gift with equanimity.

This move was undoubtedly a deliberate act by Liu Bei during his lifetime to balance the situation and allow Liu Shan to bestow favors upon his important ministers.

But this undoubtedly pushed Li Yi's status to its absolute peak.

The bestowal of rewards did not cease.

With Liu Bei's secret instructions before his death and Li Yi's tacit approval.

Liu Shan began a new round of large-scale bestowals aimed at consolidating imperial power and balancing the various factions.

He vigorously promoted Zhang Fei and other members of the Zhang family by marriage.

Zhang Bao, Zhang Shao, and other sons and nephews all obtained high-ranking titles and important positions.

The Guan family, headed by Guan Yu, was also promoted, and Guan Xing, Guan Suo, and others were also given important positions.

Although the Guan family was not related to Liu Bei by marriage, they were like brothers to him.

Almost half of the royal family, holding a highly respected position.

At the same time, a large number of talents from the Zhuge clan in Jingzhou and Xuzhou were employed.

Zhuge Liang's younger brother, Zhuge Jun, and other members of his clan, such as Zhuge Dan, entered the imperial court or local government to assume important positions.

The Zhuge clan has become a rising political force.

For a time,

The influence of the Guan, Zhang, and Zhuge families expanded rapidly both inside and outside the court, and their disciples and former officials were spread throughout important positions.

This created a new situation where three powers stood in a tripartite balance, checking and balancing each other while jointly protecting the imperial power.

However, what's intriguing is...

The Li family, already the most powerful and influential clan in the land.

Apart from fulfilling his promise of ten bestowals, Liu Shan did not grant any additional or substantial power or promotions to his family.

Li Yi's sons and nephews, such as Li Zhi, Li Ping, Li An, and Li Tai, retained their official positions.

Unlike the other three companies, they did not experience a general improvement.

The political considerations behind this are obvious to anyone with discerning eyes.

It is precisely to leverage the newly rising power of the three families of Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhuge Liang that...
To check and balance the Li family, who are already deeply entrenched and wield immense power!

A delicate balance has been formed between the "three mandatory and one excessive" principles.

To avoid a situation where powerful ministers become too powerful and threaten imperial authority.

This was Liu Bei's far-sighted plan before his death, and also Liu Shan's inevitable choice to consolidate his imperial throne.

Li Yi remained silent regarding this reward, which was clearly intended to provide checks and balances.

He even expressed his support for certain key appointments.

He deeply understood the principle that "the moon wanes when it is full, and water overflows when it is full."

The Li family's power has reached its zenith; if they continue to act recklessly, they will surely face annihilation.

At this moment, tacit approval and concession are actually the best protection for the family.

Temple name is the title given to the emperor when he is worshipped in the ancestral temple, used to "respect the ancestral lineage".

In the Han Dynasty, the granting of temple names was extremely strict, and only those with great merit and virtue could possess them.

Now that Liu Bei has unified the country, his achievements are comparable to those of Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang and Emperor Shizu Liu Xiu.

As these powerful families rose to prominence, their protégés and former subordinates naturally also benefited.

They all occupied important positions in government at all levels.

Meanwhile, those old-established meritorious nobles who were originally in a wait-and-see attitude, or who failed to "take sides" in time due to their estrangement from these families, were left behind.

Such as the descendants of some generals who followed Liu Bei in the early days but were gradually marginalized in the later stages.

Then they can only watch helplessly as the cake of power and interests is completely divided up.

He secretly beat his chest and stamped his feet, filled with regret.

They understood that this new emperor's grace had reshuffled the deck.

If a new backer cannot be found or changes cannot be made as soon as possible.

They were marginalized from the core of power.

Its gradual decline is an inevitable fate.

After this series of rewards and honors concerning the power structure had been settled, Liu Shan raised another important issue at the court assembly—

To bestow a temple name upon the deceased Emperor Liu Bei.

Zhuge Liang stepped forward, his expression solemn, and announced in a clear voice:
"Your Majesty, the late Emperor's achievements surpassed those of Emperor Guangwu, and his virtues exceeded those of Emperor Huan and Emperor Ling."

"Sweep across the six kingdoms and restore the Han dynasty three times."

"To lay the foundation for entrepreneurship and establish unparalleled achievements."

According to etiquette, temple names should be chosen from the four characters 'Gao, Tai, Shi, Zhong' to commemorate their supreme virtue.

“‘High,’ ‘Too’ and ‘World’ already exist.”

Liu Bang's temple name was "Taizu" and his posthumous title was "Gao".

His full title was Emperor Gaozu of Han.

However, this does not mean that it is wrong to call Liu Bang Emperor Gaozu of Han.

Because Emperor Gaozu of Han is a combined title for Liu Bang.

In the Records of the Grand Historian, it is directly written as the Annals of Emperor Gaozu.

In official Han Dynasty documents, Liu Bang was directly referred to as Emperor Gaozu.

In other words, the official authorities at the time had already recognized Liu Bang's title of "Gaozu".

However, Liu Bang used both the words "too" and "high" at the same time.

Liu Xiu also used the character "世".

Therefore, in the highest-ranking temple name "Gao Tai Zhong Shi", only the character "Zhong" has not yet been used.

Zhuge Liang continued speaking.

“The character ‘中’ signifies the ruler of a nation’s revival, connecting the past and the future.”

"His achievements are magnificent, just as the late emperor accomplished!"

"Moreover, the late emperor was the one who founded the dynasty and established the dynasty, and according to the system, he should be called 'ancestor'."

"Therefore, in my humble opinion, the late emperor's temple name should be set as—Zhongzu!"

In the temple name system, "Zu" is used for emperors who made pioneering contributions.

If Liu Bang was the founder of the Taizu Dynasty, then Liu Xiu was the Shizu who continued the dynasty and ushered in a new era.

Therefore, it is logical for Liu Bei, as the "third founder," to be called "Zhongzu" (the central ancestor).

It clearly establishes Liu Bei's pivotal position in the Han Dynasty's lineage, bridging the past and the future:

It inherited the legacy of Emperor Taizu Gao and Emperor Shizu Guangwu, and ushered in a new era following the Three Rejuvenations.

He paused and continued:

Since the posthumous title was "Zhaowu," the late emperor's full title should be—

"Emperor Zhaowu, the founder of the Han Dynasty!"

"The Ancestor of Hanzhong..."

Liu Shan pondered the matter carefully, while his ministers whispered among themselves.

This temple name affirms Liu Bei's achievements in inheriting the legitimate succession of the Han dynasty and restoring the Han dynasty.

This also highlights his status as the founder of the dynasty, comparable to that of the founding emperor.

It complements the posthumous title "Zhaowu" perfectly and is indeed extremely fitting.

"What you say, my dear Zhuge, is very true!"

Liu Shan immediately approved the proposal, saying, "Let it be done, and posthumously honor my late father as Emperor Zhaowu of Hanzhong!"

"The Ministry of Rites and the Court of Imperial Sacrifices are hereby ordered to make preparations immediately."

"Enter the ancestral temple and receive sacrifices!"

"Your Majesty, Holy Might!"

The courtiers echoed in unison.

Upon ascending the throne, the new emperor bestowed titles and honors upon his officials.

The temple name of the late emperor was also determined, and a series of major events were completed.

Liu Shan then issued an edict granting a general amnesty.

Except for those guilty of the ten most heinous crimes, all other prisoners were given reduced sentences or released at the discretion of the authorities, so that they could start anew with the people.

In an instant, it felt as if the harsh winter had passed and all things were reviving.

Despite the turbulent undercurrents that still flow beneath the surface of the court.

But on the surface, the entire empire did indeed appear to have a new look.

People had high expectations for this young emperor who ascended the throne with the support of a powerful regent team.

However, Luo

The clamor and changes of the sun, when transmitted to the distant Western Regions, transformed into a heavy lament.

When news of Liu Bei's death and Liu Shan's ascension to the throne arrived, it was delivered by express courier.

It was several months later when the package arrived at the Western Regions Prefectural Governor's Office after traversing the Hexi Corridor.

Upon hearing the news, Liu Li, the Third Prince and Protector-General of the Western Regions, was struck dumb, and the document in his hand fluttered to the ground.

He staggered out of the government office, faced the direction of Luoyang in the east, and knelt down with a thud.

He looked up to the sky and let out a mournful, long howl:

“Father——!”

Immediately, tears streamed down his face, and he banged his head on the ground.

They performed the most solemn ceremony of three kneelings and nine kowtows, each kowtow being incredibly heavy.

His forehead quickly turned purplish-blue.

Chen Tai and Zhuge Ke followed closely behind, their faces also filled with grief, kneeling to one side.

"Father... Your son is unfilial! Your son is unfilial!"

Liu Li pounded the ground, his voice hoarse.

"When my father was seriously ill and on his deathbed, I was unable to attend to him and listen to his final teachings."

"Your Majesty has passed away, and I am far away, unable to personally escort your coffin and bid you farewell!"

"As a son, my sin is the greatest!"

"I wish I could grow wings and fly back to Luoyang to stand before my father's tomb..."

"He built a hut to observe mourning for three years!"

Seeing this, Chen Tai quickly offered words of comfort:

"Your Highness, please accept my condolences! His Majesty is the Son of Heaven, and his destiny is ordained by Heaven."

"Your Highness bears the heavy responsibility of governing the Western Regions, which was also entrusted by the late Emperor and is related to the stability of the western border of the country."

"The spirit of the late Emperor in heaven will surely understand Your Highness's inability to fulfill both loyalty and filial piety, and will never blame Your Highness for this."

Zhuge Ke also said:
“…Brother Xuanbo is absolutely right.”

"Your Highness has been governing the various kingdoms in the Western Regions, opening up trade routes, and strengthening border defenses."

"This is also an act of filial piety towards the country and loyalty to the late emperor!"

"I hope Your Highness will take care of yourself and turn your grief into strength, so as not to fail the late Emperor's expectations!"

Liu Li knelt on the ground, remaining silent for a long time.

He was caught in a huge internal conflict and pain.

He wanted to immediately abandon everything and return to Luoyang to fulfill his filial duty to his father at his mausoleum.

He also knew that if he left now, the newly stabilized situation in the Western Regions might change.

Moreover, the power structure in the capital is already established, so it would be rash for me to return.

My identity is sensitive, and I fear it may arouse suspicion.

On the contrary, it may lead to danger.

Just when he was in a state of confusion and unable to make a decision.

Zhang Ji, the Prefect of the Western Regions, strode over.

Seeing Liu Li kneeling and weeping, he was first taken aback, then bowed and reported:

"Your Highness, you previously imitated King Zhao of Yan and built the Golden Terrace."

"Issue a wide-ranging call for talent to develop the Western Regions."

"Now, there are many respondents, and among them are indeed many outstanding individuals."

“There was one person in particular, named Ma Zhao.”

"Although he is young, his advice and his writings are remarkable."

"An analysis of the geography, customs, products, and even the situation of various countries in the Western Regions."

"With unique insights and far-sighted planning, he is truly a rare talent!"

"I have conducted a preliminary assessment and his talent is deemed suitable for employment."

Liu Li was in a bad mood at the moment. Upon hearing this, he forced himself to cheer up, wiped away his tears, and asked:
"If that's the case, why not bring him to see me?"

A hint of hesitation appeared on Zhang Ji's face, and he said tentatively:
"This... Your Highness."

"This person...is quite...ugly and unusual in appearance, and has a hoarse and unpleasant voice."

"Like...like a broken gong."

"Your Majesty, I fear that his appearance may be shocking and disturb your presence."

Therefore... we have not yet dared to introduce you to the emperor.

Upon hearing this, Liu Li's face immediately showed displeasure, even a hint of indignation, as he rebuked:

"Jingzhong, what are you saying?!"

"I set up the Golden Terrace to seek out talented people."

"He is a capable man who can help me stabilize the Western Regions and benefit the country and its people!"

"How can we judge a person by their appearance and turn them away just because they are ugly or have a hoarse voice?"

"In the past, King Qi became powerful by marrying the ugly woman Wu Yan. How can I emulate those shallow people?"

"Go immediately and bring this Ma Zhao to me!"

"I want to see what kind of person he is."

"For you, Jingzhong, to praise his talent so highly, yet still hesitate to acknowledge his appearance!"

Seeing Liu Li's anger, Zhang Ji dared not say another word and quickly bowed, saying:

"Your Highness, please calm down. I was being pedantic."

"I will go and invite Ma Zhao here immediately."

Before long, Zhang Ji returned with one person.

The man was of medium height and wore a faded blue cloth robe.

He was wearing a black mask that covered most of his face.

Only his chin and a pair of unusually calm, even somewhat cold, eyes were visible.

He walked steadily to the front of the hall and bowed to Liu Li.

The sound was indeed hoarse and unpleasant, like sandpaper being rubbed.
"This humble subject, Ma Zhao, pays his respects to His Highness the Third Prince."

Although Liu Li found the voice grating, considering the man's talent, he remained kind and gentle, offering a slight gesture of support:

"...Mr. Ma, there's no need for such formalities."

"The strategies and theories presented by Mr. Gu Guan are relevant to the terrain, tribal distribution, and trade of goods in the Western Regions."

"He has unique insights into how to divert water for irrigation and improve animal husbandry."

"The writing is sharp and gets to the heart of the matter."

"I read it alone and benefited greatly!"

"Sir, your talent is truly admirable; I am deeply gratified!"

Ma Zhao maintained his bowing posture and humbly said:

"...Your Highness is too kind."

"I am but a wild man from the borderlands, who occasionally gains something."

"To make unwarranted comments is merely a narrow and limited view; I dare not accept such high praise from Your Highness."

Liu Li ordered someone to bring him a seat, and after Ma Zhao sat down, he sighed.

A look of sorrow returned to his face, and he said:

"To be honest, sir, I just received devastating news from the capital... the late Emperor..."

"He has already passed away... My heart is in utter turmoil."

"I am pondering whether I should return to the capital immediately to pay homage to the late emperor and fulfill my filial duty as a son..."

Ma Zhao's eyes flickered slightly behind his mask.

The hoarse voice rang out again, but this time it carried a calm, almost cold, analytical quality:
"Your Highness, please forgive my bluntness."

"The situation in the capital has been settled, the new emperor has ascended the throne, and the regency structure has been established."

"Your Highness's return to the capital at this time is ostensibly to fulfill filial piety, but..."

"Your Highness has a special status, holding power over the Western Regions, and has suddenly returned to the court."

"Not only will it not help the overall situation, but it will also easily arouse suspicion, and I may be detained in Luoyang."

"If so, then Your Highness's hard work in building up the foundation in the Western Regions will have integrated the efforts of all the countries."

"Has all our efforts in opening up trade routes been in vain?"

"It is a great pity that all previous efforts have been wasted."

In my humble opinion, Your Highness might as well…

"Stay in the Western Regions for now, consolidate our foundation, and observe the situation."

"This is not unfilial piety, but rather a way of inheriting the late emperor's will and consolidating the western border of the Han Dynasty!"

These words were extremely bold, directly addressing the core interests.

Upon hearing this, Liu Li was startled and couldn't help but glance at Ma Zhao a few more times.

This person not only had an excellent understanding of the Western Regions, but also possessed such keen insight into the political situation at court!
He pondered for a moment and said:
“What you say, sir, coincides with what I have been thinking.”

"I also feel that returning to the capital at this time would not be a wise move."

"However... this Western Regions, although it has been integrated..."

"However, due to wind, sand and drought, and geographical isolation, the resources available are ultimately limited."

"The space for development seems to have been firmly locked up, making it difficult to achieve greater things."

“Whenever I think about this, I feel anxious.”

Ma Zhao's hoarse voice seemed to carry a hint of barely perceptible resolve:

"Your Highness's concerns are precisely the bottleneck to the development of the Western Regions."

"However, to break this deadlock, we must first thoroughly understand every inch of land and every water source in the Western Regions."

"The true situation of each tribe!!"

"Talking about war on paper is ultimately just scratching the surface."

"This humble subject is unworthy, but is willing to serve as Your Highness's vanguard and personally travel to various places in the Western Regions."

"Traversing oases and deserts, venturing deep into snow-capped mountains and wastelands."

"Conduct on-site geographical surveys, record people's lives, draw detailed maps, and uncover hidden stories!"

"To provide Your Highness with the most reliable and accurate basis for developing the Western Regions!"

Upon hearing this, Liu Li was both surprised and delighted, and abruptly stood up:

"Sir, is what you say true?!"

"The environment in the Western Regions is far harsher than that in the Central Plains!"

"Sir, your journey will be long and arduous, covering thousands of miles and enduring hardships."

"Scorching heat and bitter cold, sandstorms and avalanches."

"Ferocious beasts and poisonous insects are all deadly threats!"

"It was a near-death experience, sir..."

"Are you truly willing to risk such danger for me?"

Ma Zhao let out a low, hoarse laugh.

The laughter echoed in the empty hall, sounding particularly eerie and unsettling.

"Your Highness! What is the matter of life and death worth mentioning?"

"This humble citizen... has already died once!"

"This crippled body, this life—"

"If it can benefit the development of the Western Regions, it will help Your Highness achieve great things."

"Even if it means being instantly shattered to pieces, I will not hesitate!"

"Why should I fear dying again?!"

This fearless spirit and the resolute determination contained in that eerie laughter deeply shocked Liu Li.

He walked up to Ma Zhao and stared intently at the mysterious young man.

My appreciation for it grew even stronger.

He said sincerely:

"Mr. Ma's noble character is deeply appreciated!"

"Since you have such aspirations, I will await your good news!"

"only……"

He paused, with a hint of curiosity and respect.

"I had a heartfelt conversation with you, sir, but I never even got to see your face. It is truly a pity."

"Sir...would you mind removing your mask so I can see your true face?"

Ma Zhao's body stiffened almost imperceptibly.

He was silent for a moment, then said in a hoarse voice:
"Your Highness... I am ugly, like a ghost."

"I'm afraid...it might frighten Your Highness...it's better...not to look."

Liu Li, however, became even more insistent, his tone gentle yet firm:
"Sir, why be so modest?"

"Since I have treated you as a national treasure, how could I change my mind because of your appearance?"

"Even if you have the face of a demon, in my eyes you are far superior to those who are all show and no substance but have filthy hearts!"

"But please remove your mask, sir. I am utterly fearless."

Ma Zhao raised his head, and his eyes, which were visible outside the mask, gave Liu Li a deep look.

An extremely complex emotion seemed to flash in his eyes.

There was struggle, there was pain, and there was also a hint of...

An indescribable sense of relief.

a long time,

He slowly raised his trembling hand and reached for the knot of the mask tied behind his head.

"Since...Your Highness insists on seeing...then..."

"This humble subject... will obey..."

As the knot loosened, the black mask was slowly removed, revealing the true face hidden beneath—

In an instant, even though Liu Li was mentally prepared, he couldn't help but gasp.

The pupils suddenly contracted!

Following behind him were Chen Tai, Zhuge Ke, and even Zhang Ji.

They all involuntarily took a half step back, their faces showing horror!

What a terrifying face it was!

His entire face was covered with crisscrossing, jagged scars that looked like a centipede!
The scar was clearly caused by repeated cutting with a sharp blade, after which the skin and flesh rolled up and healed.

It left behind indelible, twisted, and terrifying traces.

The nose appears to have been partially removed, making it look somewhat sunken and crooked.

The lips were also slightly distorted due to the scars.

There is almost no intact skin on this face.

It completely ruined the contours of the face.

All that remained was a chilling, inhuman ugliness and grotesqueness!
Only those eyes stood out against that terrifying face.

Instead, it appeared unusually calm and profound, even carrying a kind of coldness and vicissitudes that came from seeing through the ways of the world.

The hall was deathly silent, with only the heavy breathing of the crowd audible.

Ma Zhao stood there quietly, letting the horrified gazes of the crowd fall on his face.

The hoarse voice rang out again, but it was eerily calm:
"This humble citizen...is ugly."

"I have disturbed Your Highness."
