Chapter 18: Dark Eyes

The car drove all the way into Huayue Villa.

Before buying a fence, Jian Ning first placed sixty chicks in the yard and saw Boss Zhao off.

The chicks, having just arrived at their new home, showed no signs of discomfort, scattering around the yard pecking at things and eating small insects in the grass.

She cooked some white rice, picked up a woven rattan basket, and went to the vegetable garden.

The acre of land that was cleared a while ago is now lush and green thanks to the magical blessing.

The bok choy is a vibrant green, its stems as white as milky jade. The lettuce is so fresh and juicy, its bright green color allowing sunlight to filter through.

The scallions are growing very vigorously, standing straight and tall.

The pea shoots were growing very tenderly. She bent down and pinched off the tender tips of each one, making sure they were neat and tidy. She thought they would grow better as the weather got colder, and she should be able to eat them until spring.

The radishes haven't grown well yet, and we haven't had time to thin them out. They're growing too densely, but the radish stalks that were thinned out are good to stir-fry.

She planted vegetables haphazardly, scattering a handful of seeds on the ground.

Thinning the seedlings takes some effort.

Now that we have chicks, the leftover vegetable leaves won't go to waste; we'll chop them up and feed them to the chicks later.

These vegetables all look good, but inevitably there are some wormholes.

Jian Ning thought that it would be even more convenient if there were some insect repellent techniques or something.

After picking a full basket of vegetables, Jian Ning prepared to cook lunch.

Eating alone is much simpler.

A plate of stir-fried eggs with chili peppers. Don't beat the eggs; this way, the egg whites and yolks are more distinct, resulting in a better texture. Finely chop the chili peppers, heat the oil and sauté until fragrant, then add the seasonings, followed by the eggs. Stir-fry quickly; it's ready in just a few minutes. Also, a plate of lettuce with oyster sauce.

Both dishes were served in less than ten minutes.

Jian Ning washed her hands, scooped out a bowl of white rice, and began to eat.

After retiring from the entertainment industry, the thing she wants to do most is to eat well every day.

The stir-fried eggs with chili peppers were incredibly delicious with rice, but the eggs weren't great in texture and had a slightly strange fishy taste. The lettuce was even better than she expected; it would definitely taste good wrapped around some pork belly and eaten raw.

Sometimes the lettuce sold outside smells like stinky feet, but this lettuce has a much simpler flavor, with fresh leaves and a subtle sweetness.

She was eating when the system suddenly popped up.

[The task is complete: one acre of spiritual land has been cleared and spiritual plants have been successfully grown.]

You have acquired the beginner-level spell "Reclaiming Land".

Jian Ning's mind was instantly flooded with something far more complex than a string of gibberish.

She used to naively believe that magic and spells were simply a matter of memorizing incantations and moving her fingers.

Once you're truly bound to the system and start cultivating immortality, you realize it's no different from learning a new language.

If one cannot grasp the subtleties of the technique, the effect of its execution will be greatly diminished. The deeper one's understanding and the more diligent one's practice, the better the technique will become.

She needs time to process this properly.

After finishing her meal, she chopped up the vegetable leaves and fed them to the chicks in a bowl.

The chicks were easier to raise than she had imagined; they weren't picky eaters.

As soon as the basin hit the ground, the chicks scurried over and began to eat.

Jian Ning was delighted to see them eating and used her phone to film a video of them eating vegetables.

She remembered that she had posted a video on Fengqi Live's new account before leaving home today, so she clicked on it to see if she had gained any followers.

It was worse than expected; I didn't gain a single follower.

The video did get a dozen or so likes and four comments.

[The blogger's life, my dream.]

[This feels so good.]

Not bad.

[How much does it cost to rent such a big place?] This should be the first video on a new account, so it has the effect of official promotion.

It seems that becoming a short video blogger is much more difficult than imagined.

Jian Ning was not discouraged. She sat on a recliner by the door and leisurely scrolled through her phone for a while.

It's the number one trending topic on Weibo.

#Gu Yan and Xie Weiwei's "Heaven Has Decided Me to Love You"#
Jian Ning remembered that Nan Nan had mentioned that the two of them were going to be on a dating reality show.

She wasn't interested, so she scrolled down and saw the trending topic #JianNing'sScheming# at number 36.

The trending topic wasn't high up, but the name "Jian Ning" was eye-catching.

There are many people with the same name, but to appear on the trending topics list, especially one with the word "scheming," is a negative one.

Aside from her, it would be hard to find another like her in the entire entertainment industry.

When she clicked on it, most of the posts were fabricated rumors about her, such as: she was clearly the fifth female lead in a drama but she added a lot of scenes for herself; her high school classmates revealed that she had a bad character; and there were even rumors spread by someone claiming to be a college classmate that she had dated a man in his fifties or sixties.

Jian Ning was increasingly speechless as she looked at it.

One of the common tactics used in the entertainment industry to whitewash an image is to wait for the hype surrounding an incident to die down, then start negatively impacting the victim's public image, portraying them as a villain, and thus improving Gu Yan's public image.

Jian Ning clenched her fists tightly.

She retired from the entertainment industry, not died.

Jian Ning thought she needed to make her voice heard.

But when I couldn't think of anything to post on Weibo, I remembered the cute little chick eating vegetables and posted the video of the chick.

Caption: Bad luck, go away!

This Weibo post didn't have any special meaning; it was simply to tell Gu Yan that she was still alive and could still speak out, and to try and buy her some negative trending topics to smear her.

After posting this Weibo post, she yawned, feeling sleepy.

After retiring from the entertainment industry, she lived a leisurely life, lying on a cool bed under a grape trellis, the cool breeze blowing away the heat of the sun, and taking a nice afternoon nap.

I slept fitfully all afternoon.

She was only woken up when the phone rang.

Jian Ning picked up her phone and saw that it was Nan Nan's number. She answered the call.

"Ningning, you're amazing! You didn't say anything until you made your voice heard, and now you've made it to the top of the trending searches, even surpassing the pre-show trending searches that Gu Yan and Xie Weiwei bought in advance for their participation in the dating reality show."

Jian Ning couldn't understand it either. Did her Weibo account really have that much power?

She has very few fans. In the past, when she acted in dramas, it was difficult to get more than a thousand likes. The company had to buy data for her so that it would look better if it got more than ten thousand likes.

Aside from her affair with Gu Yan, if she wanted to trend on social media, a nobody with no online presence wouldn't even dream of it.

Jian Ning herself was surprised: "We're in first place! I'll go check it out."

She didn't intend to make a big deal out of it; she just didn't want to be a silent victim who was being slandered.

When I opened Weibo, I saw that the video of the chicken eating vegetables had a million likes, over 100,000 reposts, and hundreds of thousands of comments.

Even Jian Ning herself was startled.

Considering the dismal data of the pastoral-style video I posted on Fengqi Live this morning, the data in front of me looks enviable.

She opened the Weibo comments and saw the top comments from netizens; her eyes immediately went black.

Okay, got it. Gu Yan's chicken is small.

To be fair, Jian Ning's acting skills are average, but she's definitely got a knack for being sarcastic and sarcastic.

[Just now, Xie Weiwei and Gu Yan were trying to generate buzz for their dating reality show, saying they were full of energy and looked like they'd had a lot of work done. And then you, my friend, jumped out and ruthlessly exposed them?]

This metaphor is truly chilling.

Got it, you're still a weakling, let's graduate!
