Chapter 259 The Butterfly Effect
Chapter 259 The Butterfly Effect
After watching "The Man from Earth", "The Butterfly Effect" was also completed and a preview was held in the screening room.
"The Butterfly Effect" and "This Man Is From Earth" were filmed at the same time, but "The Butterfly Effect" involved more special effects, and the production department had many films lined up for production, which resulted in post-production being completed more than two months after he finished filming.
We cannot fail to mention the structure of Guess the Movies here.
After completing the merger of Good Machine Pictures and Triangle Entertainment, the company's production and distribution capabilities have been significantly improved, but in terms of overall strength it is still a medium-sized film production company, producing a maximum of 10 small and medium-sized film projects each year, which is much worse than the Big Seven film studios that produce to films each year.
Link plans to acquire two more film production companies next year to improve the production capabilities of Guess Pictures, while also being able to learn about the movie box office subsidy situation more quickly.
The internal preview of "The Butterfly Effect" was not large in scale. Those invited to attend the preview were mainly the main creative staff of "The Butterfly Effect", management of the production and distribution department of Guess What Pictures, Harvey Weinstein and several management of Miramax Films, as well as acquaintances such as Sofia, Quentin, Steven Soderbergh, and Richard Linklater.
The movie starts.
The first thing that appeared was a passage of text: Even something as small as the flapping of a butterfly's wings can cause a hurricane thousands of miles away - chaos theory.
The theory was proposed by meteorologist Lorenz in 1963. It refers to a butterfly in the tropical rainforest of the Amazon River in South America, which occasionally flaps its wings and may cause a tornado in Texas, USA two weeks later.
This theory is also the core of this movie, which mainly talks about how subtle changes in life can have a huge impact on oneself and the people around him, like the second half of "Charlotte's Troubles".
The film still uses a circular narrative structure, with the beginning and the end of the film connected.
The protagonist Evan, wearing a uniform from a mental hospital, sneaked into an office, hid under a desk, took out a pen and wrote:
"If.anyone reads this letter it means my plan didn't work and I'm dead. If I could somehow go back to the beginning of all this, maybe I could.save her."
"Evan! Evan!"
"He should be here!"
The hospital staff came over and banged on the glass door.
The opening sets up suspense, and then the plot enters the main line, when Evan is seven years old and playing with a puppy on the lawn. His mother Andrea is repairing a car in front of the door, and Evan asks about his father.
“This is an interesting beginning.”
Quentin said, stroking his big chin.
Sophia glanced at him. "Just a little interesting? Very interesting, okay? Before watching this movie, did you know what the butterfly effect meant?"
"Of course I know."
Quentin sounded uncertain.
"You haven't been to college, how do you know this?"
"Link never went to college either."
"Can you compare with Link? He is a great writer."
"Okay, stop arguing and focus on watching the movie."
Link held Sofia's hand.
Sophia kept her mouth shut.
Quentin glanced at the two people holding hands, curled his lips tightly, and muttered secretly that they were a pair of bastards.
The movie continued, and Evan was sent to school by his mother. The teacher told his mother Andrea that Evan had drawn a very bloody and violent picture, but Evan didn't know when he drew it.
Andrea thought he was making excuses and took him to see a psychiatrist, hoping he wouldn't inherit his father's symptoms.
At the doctor's suggestion, Evan started writing a diary to write down everything to prevent amnesia later.
That’s where those diaries came from.
The first one is about Andrea taking him to play at his neighbors Tommy and Kelly's house, and then being taken to the basement by Kelly's father to film something, and then partially losing his memory.
The second part is about Evan visiting his father Jason in a mental hospital and being almost strangled to death by his father. The conversation between him and his father was forgotten.
The third story is when Tommy was 13 years old at the garbage dump. He went mad and wanted to burn his puppy to death, and he started to suffer from amnesia again.
The fourth story is about a mailbox explosion. Evan only remembers putting the bomb in his neighbor's mailbox and has forgotten what happened afterwards.
After the mailbox explosion, Mrs. Andrea took Evan away from town.
"Oh, I see. Evan inherited his father's mental illness, which can cause amnesia. The older you get, the greater the impact. Then Evan will meet a good doctor. With the help of the doctor and his mother, Evan gradually recovers and gets rid of the mental illness. So this movie is about psychological issues and family affection, right?"
Quentin said confidently.
"It shouldn't be that simple. The butterfly effect is a subtle change that causes a huge impact, and a child with a mental illness is like a time bomb that will bring great changes to the lives of those around them. This movie may be a comparison between two generations of mentally ill patients to tell the audience that the care of family and society will lead their lives in different directions. This may be a movie that explores human nature and society, similar to Forrest Gump."
said bald Steven Soderbergh.
"I think so. Fuck, time travel!"
Before Robert Rodriguez could express his opinion, the protagonist was seen in the dormitory holding a diary and starting his first time traveling.
The first time Evan traveled back to the time when he was 13 years old, he was in the garbage dump. When Tommy the Devil wanted to burn a puppy, Evan asked Lenny the Fatty to save the puppy. The Devil threatened that if Lenny dared to do that, he would kill his mother. After Evan woke up, he went to see Lenny the Fatty, his childhood friend, and asked about what happened that day to verify whether the time travel was true or not.
Fat Lenny grows up to be an autistic person, speaking words of the demon threatening to kill his mother at the junkyard.
Evan then discovered that time travel was real.
“Wow, this is such a cool setting.”
"Quentin, this setting is a thousand times and ten thousand times better than what you said."
"I understand. The hero has the ability to travel through time and space. He uses this method to go back to his childhood to help the people around him and let everyone live a happy life. This is the meaning of the butterfly effect."
Many people were amazed to see Evan travel to the past through his diary.
Although the concept of time travel has appeared in movies in the 1970s, most of those movies were about time travel to the future, including "A Time Traveler" and "The Terminator". No one has ever made a movie about traveling back to childhood through a diary, so it seems very novel.
But the subsequent plot development surprised everyone.
After the male protagonist Evan traveled back to the past, he originally wanted to save the people around him by changing some things, but he found that with each time he traveled back and forth, things became worse and worse. There were always people around him who were unlucky, and even he himself was affected. He was once imprisoned, someone took him in through the back door, and once his limbs were blown off.
After experiencing several time travels, Evan gradually collapsed and became mentally confused.
It was at this time that Evan learned that his father Jason had been just like him, constantly traveling back in time to try to change everything that was bad, but he found that things were getting worse and worse, including Evan's mother having three miscarriages, all because of his father's constant travel through time and space.
Finally, Evan was also locked up in a mental hospital. In order to change the status quo, Evan ran to the doctor's office, hid under the table and wrote the opening sentence "If anyone sees this letter"
After writing it, Evan turns on the home video tape and plays the footage of his birth. Evan travels back to his mother's womb again and commits suicide by wrapping the umbilical cord around his neck.
This scene is shown through the hospital's B-ultrasound footage, and the movements of the embryo Evan can be seen. The scene is quite thrilling and shocking.
"Wow~"
"So that's how it is? This is incredible."
“This setting is so cool.”
When the movie played this scene, many people at the scene couldn't help but exclaim in surprise, with incredible expressions on their faces.
This scene was also like the preview of "Seven Deadly Sins". Many people saw the scene where John Doe forced Detective Mills to become "angry" by killing Tracy. Many people also showed incredible expressions and exclaimed continuously.
clap clap clap!
When the movie ended, everyone in the audience stood up and applauded, cheering loudly.
Link smiled and was very satisfied with the movie. Whether it was the camera design, the acting skills, the dialogue design, the scene layout and lighting, it was much better than the original version.
"Director Link, this movie is amazing, a hundred times better than I expected."
Leonardo clapped his hands excitedly.
When filming this movie, because it was shot in chronological order, he didn't have a good understanding of the overall structure of the film, and couldn't imagine what the film would be like.
After watching the movie, he was shocked. The movie was so wonderful and he felt genuinely excited to be the protagonist in such a movie.
“Leon, your performance was great too.”
Link laughed.
"Link, this movie is amazing. Congratulations on making another great movie."
Steven Soderbergh, Richard Linklater and others also came forward to congratulate.
"Thank you!"
"Link, you are awesome, this movie is awesome."
The heroine Renée Zellweger excitedly threw herself into his arms, and when she looked up at him, her eyes were full of admiration and excitement for him.
Julianne Moore also congratulated with a smile.
“You guys did a great job too.”
Link smiled as he put his arms around Renée Zellweger and Julianne Moore.
Sophia curled her lips and turned to look at Quentin. "How is it? Is the subsequent plot of The Butterfly Effect more exciting than you expected? Do you admire Link now?"
“It’s just so-so. Comparatively speaking, I prefer Seven Deadly Sins.”
Quentin deadpanned.
"You're just jealous."
Sophia teased.
Quentin really wanted to say no, but when he saw Link surrounded by several beautiful women, he gritted his teeth and felt jealous.
