Chapter 26: The Witch Hunter Returns to His Own Business
Chapter 26: The Witch Hunter Returns to His Own Business
Jeffrey is not having a happy time these days.
Although his father made a deal with an evil necromancer and sold his body for an unimaginably high price after his death.
Leave him an inheritance that is enough for him and his sister to live a stable life.
But deep down in his heart, he always felt unwilling and had some...unsatisfied resentment.
The wizard masters of the Federation and the priests in the church who were always kind to others actually stood on the side of the evil necromancer and accused him of greed.
I had originally hoped that Lord Burko, who hated necromancers, would be able to seek justice for me.
What he got in return was the other party's anger and a slap in the face that knocked out several of his teeth.
Of course, Jeffrey didn't dare to show his resentment to their faces, let alone cause trouble for the wizards. He was just a lowly commoner with no background. Apart from secretly cursing them while lying on the gambling table in the tavern, he could do nothing else.
After migrating to Grizzlie Castle with the noble lords' caravan, Jeffrey used the excuse that as the eldest son he should take more of the inheritance, and used a few gold pounds to get rid of his sister who had been making a fuss about separating from him. He encouraged her to take the money and go to the knight's squire who had been having an affair with her for a long time.
Grizzlie Castle was much more prosperous than Jackdaw Town, and the numerous taverns and gambling dens in the city made him linger.
Within a few days, he had squandered all the money he earned from selling his father's body.
At night, Jeffrey was tossing and turning in the tavern room he rented, unable to sleep. He heard footsteps at the door, followed by the sound of the bolt, and someone walked in quietly.
"Who is it?" He took out a small knife from his waist, squinted his eyes and asked in a trembling voice in the darkness.
"Don't move and don't shout." The man threatened in a low voice, but Jeffrey recognized the other person's voice. It was the deacon of the Jackdaw Town Church, Stani Kane.
"Yes, is that Mr. Kane?"
The candlesticks were lit by the flames, and the dim light illuminated the entire room.
The church deacon, Stani, took off his gray-black cloak, pulled up a chair and sat in front of Jeffrey.
"I have something to tell you, Jeffrey." He habitually scratched his chin, where there was a long, hideous scar that greatly undermined his gentle demeanor as a church deacon.
"What do you want from me?" Jeffrey obediently put away the knife and glanced at the sharp sword without sheath hanging at his waist.
"You've been to the manor of the necromancer named Harvey, right?" Stani asked in a low voice.
"Yes... yes, because of my father, everyone in the town knows about it..."
The deacon interrupted him impatiently, "Stop talking nonsense. I need you to lead the way to that manor."
Jeffrey was startled and stammered, "Wha...what? Why, do you want me to take you there?"
Starny sneered, "What? Are you scared? Don't you want to avenge your father?"
Everything Jeffrey said when he was drunk in the tavern reached his ears word for word.
"Are you planning to deal with that necromancer?" Jeffrey stuttered nervously and couldn't utter a complete sentence for a long time.
"I won't let you make this trip in vain. After this is accomplished, I will find you a job in the church in Grizzly Castle and give you some money as your reward."
He took out a coarse cloth purse from his waist, threw it on Jeffrey's bed, and asked with a provocative grin.
"How about it? Do you want to do this deal?"
Jeffrey picked up the purse and weighed it. A trace of resentment flashed in his eyes. After thinking for a moment, he gritted his teeth and asked, "You just need me to lead the way, right?"
Stani nodded in confirmation.
“I did it!”…
Stani Kane was not a priest who had received systematic training or church training. He was an orphan adopted into a monastery.
His life in the monastery was not easy at first, until he was chosen by the abbot to become a reserve attendant of the Inquisition.
After ten years of training, the young Stani was naturally sent to the Evil Moon Mountains, the main battlefield between the human coalition and the demons, to experience life and death trials in blood and fire.
After completing his garrison mission, Stani was fortunate enough to be awarded the honor of going to the Holy City to receive the Grand Master's honor because of his bravery in combat and accumulated military exploits.
There, he successfully stimulated the power of his bloodline, became a glorious Knight of the Judgment Army, and was carefully trained by the bishop.
He also learned the sacred history of the Church, including the truth about the Hundred Years' War between the Church and wizards.
Those evil spellcasters who seized the power and authority of the gods, because of the protection and connivance of the nobles, unscrupulously blasphemed the great God of Light in the country illuminated by the glory of God.
The archbishop told him that there were still some Divine Punishment factions in the Church, who advocated expelling wizards from the kingdom ruled by the gods and letting them receive a glorious judgment.
Stani was assigned to the witch-hunting knights secretly established by the Vatican for training.
Afterwards, he followed the witch-hunting knights and participated in many secret operations to eliminate some small spellcasting organizations and wizard families.
Until the last time, they were ordered to go to the Principality of Saint Valen and attack a group of itinerant spellcasters passing through the country.
An accident happened. Among the originally vulnerable apprentice team, there were actually two mid-level undead spellcasters hiding. He took advantage of the witch hunter knight's relaxed vigilance, released a highly harmful plague fog, and drove the powerful stitched corpse monster to suddenly attack.
The Knights suffered heavy casualties in an instant, and the Knight Commander and the Stitched Corpse Monster died together.
In order to avoid exposing his identity, the fragile alliance between the Spellcasters' Union and the Holy See broke down.
The remaining members of the Knights chose to fight to the death, but Stani was the only one who escaped after his throat was pierced by a magical thorn and he rolled down the cliff. He was mistakenly thought to be dead and thus escaped.
After this battle, Stani did not return to the Holy City Church. Instead, he hid in Jackdaw Town as a church deacon.
He never gave up his hatred for wizards, nor did he forget the tragic experience of his comrades' deaths and the annihilation of his entire army.
But under the nose of the Federation, he could hardly find an opportunity to take action against those damn spellcasters.
But now is the opportunity.
That arrogant and foolish necromancer Harvey actually had the bizarre idea of staying alone in Jackdaw Town.
Before leaving and moving to Grizzly Castle, Stani had secretly approached his manor and observed it several times. The necromancer had only an alchemical puppet beside him, and no other zombies.
As long as he didn't give him enough chance to cast spells and launched a sneak attack on a junior spellcaster at close range, Stani felt that it would only take a few breaths to kill him on the spot.
As for the civilian named Jeffrey, leading the way was just an excuse he made up. His real use was to take the blame for the Federation's subsequent investigation after Stani killed the necromancer.
His father died at the hands of a necromancer, and his son teamed up with mysterious outsiders to break into the necromancer's manor to avenge his father.
This reason is perfect and completely convincing.
As for who the outsider is, it doesn't matter.
He only needed to slightly change his posture and keep his face covered. Even if the investigators from the Federation used a backtracking spell, they would probably be unable to do anything.
The witch hunter tightly gripped the longsword at his waist and squinted his eyes as he looked through the walls of Grizzly Castle towards the direction of Jackdaw Town.
At this moment, the only thought left in his mind was...
Hunt down evil wizards and restore the glory of the gods!
And also to avenge the companions who died unjustly!
