Chapter 671 Artillery Positions
Chapter 671 Artillery Positions
When the alarm sounded, the artillery battalion where Lynx was located was the first to react.
The occasional sounds of portable artillery and machine guns firing from the front lines indicated that our forces had engaged in firefights with the enemy launching a night raid.
According to the established combat procedure, they only need to confirm the battlefield situation through the connection, and after receiving the order to fire from the command, they can simply pour shells onto the enemy's position in an orderly manner.
But when Lynx led his men to the combat zone, they found that things were not going as smoothly as they had expected... The night shift, which was on night duty, was engaged in a fierce battle with a group of enemies that appeared out of nowhere between the ammunition depot and the artillery position.
Using the supplies piled up in the camp as cover, several hundred soldiers built a simple defensive line to firmly surround the enemy who kept pouring out of a maintenance equipment room. Everyone knew that the nearby ammunition depot was a crucial strategic facility for the artillery battalion, and if it were destroyed by the enemy, they would be unable to provide any reinforcements for the battle at the front in the short term.
"They dug a tunnel through the ice beneath our feet to sneak in..." Lynx said through gritted teeth, pointing to the equipment room directly targeted by the searchlight from behind a bunker. "The only place around here where the equipment room's floor isn't covered with protective steel plates is the equipment room. They probably found that loophole."
He quickly leaned out and fired at a lizardman who rushed towards him. His excellent aim pierced the man's chest as expected, but it immediately attracted the attention of another lizardman... A red light, poised to strike, came straight at him.
The deputy battalion commander swiftly pulled the lynx back, while the upper half of the wooden shelf that served as cover was directly struck by lightning, sending wood chips flying everywhere, and the entire row of shelves teetering on the verge of collapse.
"When will the Bloodline Warriors from the Special Forces team arrive to provide support? Where are the demolition team members?" Lynx, having just escaped a life-or-death situation, immediately turned to the soldier in charge of relaying the message and demanded, "We must quickly blow up the ice tunnels they've dug, and prevent these guys from continuing to surge out from underground!"
The messenger swallowed hard and said in a trembling voice, "The special operations team is tied up... Enemy ice tunnels have also appeared near the camp command post, and even more lizardmen are pouring out from there, and there are even winged beings among them."
They did this on purpose... First, they exposed themselves near the command post to attract all the Bloodline Warriors to surround and kill them, and then they quietly infiltrated the artillery positions. Their ultimate goal was to destroy the target that posed the greatest threat to them.
Lynx frowned. "How did they figure out the location of the artillery positions?"
Several more red lightning bolts shot over, and a small group of demon lizardmen took advantage of the moment when their rifles misfired to break out of the encirclement, holding up their black crystal shields... This action of not lingering in battle left no doubt that their target was indeed the position where heavy artillery was set up, as well as the nearby ammunition depot!
We need to find a way to take down the Red Lizard leader who's hiding among the enemy... Without the suppressive power of the red lightning, ordinary Black Lizards are no match for the soldiers.
Lynx immediately came up with a good idea. He crouched down and quietly crept from behind the shelving to the outside of a barracks on the side. He climbed onto the roof by stepping on his adjutant's shoulders. From his vantage point, he could see the entire battle scene near the equipment room. Several soldiers lay sprawled at the entrance of the equipment room, their bodies pierced by black spikes. They must have been caught off guard and killed when the enemy emerged from the ground.
It is currently unclear how many enemies are hiding in the dark equipment room. About a hundred rushed out, and nearly half of them were killed by the soldiers who came to surround and suppress them. The rest managed to escape by using the corpses of their comrades and huddled scattered around the supplies and carts piled up in the open space outside.
In this close-quarters firefight, the enemy's black crystal spikes were almost as powerful as the soldiers' bullets, leading to a stalemate for a short time. The human soldiers, lacking heavy weaponry, were unsurprisingly suppressed by the enemy's red lightning. While Lynx was climbing to the barracks roof, he witnessed several soldiers have their already fragile cover destroyed by the red light, then pierced by the concentrated crystal spikes, falling miserably into pools of blood.
Taking advantage of the opportunity created by his comrades' lives, Lynx keenly spotted a Red Lizard leader hiding behind an alchemy wheel... The other man's entire side was exposed to Lynx's gun, and he didn't notice the threat coming from the roof.
Lynx's most frequently used weapon is the Type II Magic Gun, which has a slower rate of fire compared to the latest Type III automatic gun, requiring bolt-action reloading after each shot. However, its advantages are higher accuracy and significantly longer range...
Without hesitation, the leader of the red lizardmen pulled the trigger, and a cloud of blood mist burst from his head. The two black lizardmen guarding him had no time to react and were sprayed with a mixture of red and black brain matter.
For Lynx, an artillery battalion commander with a background in the defense force, firing at a fixed target at a distance of less than fifty meters is almost guaranteed to be a hit.
The soldiers below immediately noticed the sudden death of the enemy leader. The dozen or so men at the front began to slowly move forward along the shelves. It seemed they had obtained the alchemical bombs delivered by the demolition team and planned to risk their lives to sneak outside the equipment room and blow up the entire building to block the enemy's ice tunnel.
This near-death adventure had a slim chance of success, but with strong reinforcements failing to arrive, neither Battalion Commander Lynx nor his subordinate officers had a better way to stop the enemy from attacking the artillery positions... The soldiers' fearless actions also prompted more outstanding marksmen to climb to higher ground and use precise bursts of fire to buy time for their advance.
Just then, the tin roof of the equipment room was suddenly shattered by a thick bolt of red lightning, and dozens of black shadows with outstretched wings rose into the air from within, quickly conjuring black water spears in their hands and shooting them into the battlefield.
Winged beings! Winged beings are hiding in the ice tunnels!
Lynx decisively turned his gun around, aiming at the sky. The suddenly appearing "big bats" gathered in twos and threes and hovered above the battlefield, their hands gradually glowing with a dark red light... that was the prelude to the release of a cluster of red lightning.
They also clearly spotted the squad of human soldiers trying to sneak out of the equipment room.
boom! boom! boom--
After several gunshots, several winged beings hovering in the low sky suddenly shuddered and then crashed uncontrollably to the ground.
However, because the sharpshooters responsible for sniping had not assigned targets beforehand, some of the winged beings escaped unscathed, and the cluster lightning they had been accumulating for a long time was unleashed in an instant.
One of the red lights went straight towards the demolition team that had just approached the equipment room.
