Chapter 19: Blood of Calth

This landmark building on the planet Kos has now completely lost its former splendor.

War left it covered in dust.

The stone wall, which was so smooth that it could reflect certain light and form a beautiful scenery, was now covered with bullet holes and traces of burning and explosion.

A large number of surviving civilians, mortal auxiliary troops, and the Mechanicus's Skitarii all gathered after receiving the signal from the transmitter. Relying on the thick underground bunkers and void shield generators here, this area can be said to be temporarily safe.

The reason why it is temporarily safe is that the orbital bombardment has not yet reached this area, and the enemy's Titan machine is also deeply mired in the quagmire of war.

The rumbling of artillery fire never subsided. The offensive from the Word Bearers and their mortal auxiliaries tried to pull out this stubborn nail, but their advance was firmly restrained by the assembled remnants of the Ultramarines.

Now these Ultramarines have reorganized into small teams. Under the cover of their own artillery, they have entered the ruins of the city and adopted guerrilla tactics to take revenge on the Word Bearers.

Hiding in the Universal Museum would lead to death. Ventanus knew that only by engaging in mobile warfare with the enemy could he avoid being destroyed by heavy firepower and Titans.

Artillery fire had been chasing the team led by Ventanus. The explosive weapons from heavy vehicles tore the warehouses and shops where they were hiding into pieces. The remaining factories and warehouses in the flying dust were engulfed in flames. The city was gradually becoming a complete battlefield ruin.

The squad of twenty Space Marines moved through the concrete tunnels, dark places littered with corpses, most of them civilians.

Ordinary people are too vulnerable in such a destructive battlefield.

Those people who were thrown into panic by the explosions and bombings instinctively hid in tunnels in order to survive, but in the face of those high-energy weapons, even the aftermath was enough to drag them to death.

Most of the bodies that died from the shock wave had blood coming out of their mouths and noses. If you touched them lightly, their bodies would even shake and rise like water-filled cloth bags.

The faces of those who died after being burned by flames or having the air sucked out had expressions of fear and pain. They tore their faces with their own nails before dying and died while struggling.

Ventanus looked at the dead Kos people in silence.

The Word Bearers stripped them of their armor and skinned them, bound them with steel chains in profane sacrificial rituals, or nailed them to pillars and carved curses into them with blades.

Every Ultramarines was slaughtered to death, and even those who were already dead were repeatedly tortured and desecrated.

"May your souls rest upon the Golden Throne, battle-brothers."

The Astartes fear no death, but shameful betrayal and blasphemy drive them into a rage.

Their actions not only humiliated the term Astartes, but also distorted the truth and creed of the Empire, and completely lost their sense of morality as human beings.

Ventanus wiped off the blasphemous Chaos symbols such as the eight-pointed star that were smeared on the wall with blood. Witnessing these evil creatures from the Warp, he instinctively felt extreme disgust.

A fog of war enveloped the entire city. Ventanus understood it to be the smoke of burning, mixed with the gelatinous mist formed by the vast amounts of water evaporated by energy weapons. Light was greatly obstructed and deflected, and all light sources were reduced to a hazy halo.

They passed through the tunnel and immediately encountered six Word Bearers warriors. As soon as the two sides met, they immediately started a fierce battle with their extraordinary reaction speed.

A bomb came from a steel crane near the factory and hit the helmet of the Atani brother. Half of his head was destroyed by the bomb and his body lost control and fell down weakly.

Ventanus fired several explosive bullets in that direction with his backhand. After hearing the sound of a heavy object hitting the ground, the cold gunfire finally stopped.

Two Word Bearers in scarlet armor surrounded the Ultramarines from behind, but their movements were discovered by several warriors. At a very close distance, both sides fought with melee weapons.

An Ultramarines wielding a power hammer swung away the opponent's chainsword and smashed it hard on the edge of the Word Bearer's breastplate, then tossed him up and to the side. The warrior rolled over and stopped, his power armor already broken and twisted, his spine and ribs shattered by the power weapon.

The Ultramarines' automatic cannons opened fire. This heavy weapon was supposed to be mounted on the vehicle, but it could still be used after being disassembled. The elemental storm tore through all obstacles and turned the Word Bearer into a sieve.

The enemy had far more vehicles than the Ultramarines, and the Loyalists had to abandon their own vehicles and heavy firepower in a hasty assembly. What they were facing at this moment was a Land Raider that rushed out of the ruins.

The Land Raider slowly turned, aiming all its weapons and ready to fire.

The Ultramarines spread out, using the distance to reduce the shockwave damage of the artillery fire. They tried to use grenade launchers to cause armor-piercing damage to their vulnerable parts, but it was not very effective.

They began to slowly retreat, moving the battlefield to the warehouse. Bolt guns flew back and forth, and the roar of the giant vehicle's engine became louder and louder.

Ventanus and his comrades installed high-energy bombs on the wall. With a roar, the entire building and the tower crane next to it fell down, burying the Land Raider in the ruins.

However, such a war vehicle could not be easily imprisoned. The powerful force pushed this steel monster out of the ruins, and the black muzzle was aimed at the extreme warriors under the control of the bird servant.

Suddenly, in an instant, strong light penetrated the foggy environment around it, ultra-high temperature embraced the Land Raider, and the hot plasma cut through the thick armor.

The molten alloy killed the pilot within the vehicle, while beams of flashing green rays penetrated the remaining Word Bearers power armor, killing these tenacious Astartes.

A large number of Mechanicus Skitarii arrived, they were another friendly unit that had received the assembly order.

Dozens of highly modified Skitarii soldiers, emitting terrible radiation, appeared beside a tall veteran.

"Aluxerotide, Skitarii of Calth."

"Ventanus, Captain of the Fourth Company."

"We have been chasing the Word Bearers. I only caught up with this group after they encountered you." Aluka said, "We have strong firepower, but limited energy. We need supplies."

"Follow me and leave the breakout point. We have supplies." Ventanus made a prompt decision and decided to evacuate this group of crusaders back to the Universal Museum base first.
