Chapter 4 Lan Cai and the Woodcutter
Chapter 4 Lan Cai and the Woodcutter
The next morning, the disciples of the Xieyue Sanxing Cave were going to preach and discuss the Dharma under the pine trees in the cave as usual.
But as soon as they went out, they were shocked.
Sanxing Cave is actually a cave paradise, and the space inside is not small, so it is not cleaned all the time.
There are often piles of fallen leaves between those deep pavilions, pearl palaces, and secluded rooms everywhere, giving people a feeling of the passage of time.
But today everyone saw that the ground in the cave had been swept, the garden had been hoed, the flowers had been tended, the trees had been trimmed, the water tanks were full, the firewood was piled high, and everything looked brand new.
"Who did it?" someone asked.
"It's Wukong!" A senior brother who arrived early pointed to the big pine tree in the cave.
I saw a thin figure standing under the ancient pine tree, still wearing clothes that were neither monk nor Taoist.
"The Monkey King who caused havoc in Heaven, is here to sprinkle water and sweep the floor for us?"
"The Fighting Buddha who traveled to the West to seek Buddhist scriptures, is he cultivating flowers and trees with us?"
Everyone was even more surprised and looked at each other.
Lan Caichang stood beside the master. Although he was called an immortal child, he was actually of a high generation.
On behalf of the crowd, he walked up to Sun Wukong and asked with a smile, "Wukong, you've already done all our homework right after you arrived. What should we do about this?"
Sun Wukong smiled and said, "Like everyone else, I am a disciple of Fangcun Mountain. When I first came to the mountain, I did these lessons. Now that I have returned, I naturally cannot forget them."
Lan Cai nodded gently and said to the crowd, "Did you all see and hear it? Wukong, even though he is the Buddha of Mount Lingshan, has not forgotten these basic lessons, but we have forgotten them.
The master didn’t say anything, which shows his magnanimity.
If we don't do it, it would be our fault as disciples.
Sweeping and cleaning is for self-cultivation. We must not slack off on these tasks in the future and must continue to do them every day!"
All the disciples responded in unison.
Sun Wukong stared at Lan Cai, his mind becoming active as he listened to these words.
Back then, he was intent on learning the art of immortality and hadn't noticed anything special about this strange-looking fairy boy. But after seeing this scene today, he felt very different.
Afterwards, a group of more than thirty people discussed scriptures under the ancient pine tree whose canopy covered the sky.
At the beginning, Lan Cai was the presiding officer, and all the sutras and theories that everyone discussed were within the scope defined by him.
But as time passed, the focus gradually shifted to Sun Wukong.
The Monkey King spoke eloquently, his tongue eloquent, sometimes talking about heaven, sometimes talking about earth, sometimes talking about the east, west, south, three realms and four continents, and the customs of each place. He knew everything about it.
All the fellow disciples were fascinated by the performance and were impressed.
Lan Cai sighed, "Wukong has become a man of profound knowledge and integrity, and all my efforts have paid off."
Sun Wukong's heart moved, and he chased after him and asked, "Master said yesterday that he would test my practice, but I don't know when it will be?"
Lan Cai said: "It's hard to say, it depends on Master's time."
A fellow practitioner added with a smile, "It's really hard to say. Apart from this time and when you were cultivating in the mountains, Master came out quite often, but in the intervening five or six hundred years, we haven't seen each other."
Lan Cai's face darkened. "How can you discuss the Master's travel schedule? You deserve to be punished. Face the wall and reflect on your past!"
Everyone suddenly became solemn, and the following discussion was interrupted by one person.
Sun Wukong took note of this and thought to himself, "Well, it seems that if I want to understand Master better, Lan Cai is also the key."
……
Several days passed and Sun Wukong stayed on the mountain, often chatting with his fellow disciples, making the originally quiet Sanxing Cave lively.
And during this conversation, he also found out some things he wanted to know.
For example, in addition to serving the master frequently, Lan Cai spent most of his time practicing in the Sutra Library.
For example, Lan Cai was the most proficient in Taoism among all the disciples, and was particularly good at divination.
One day, Sun Wukong saw Lan Cai going to the Sutra Library, so he followed him with a broom.
Lan Cai saw it but didn't care.
Because this newly-appointed Fighting and Victory Buddha of Mount Lingshan, besides lecturing on the sutras and teachings, was also cleaning the various places on the mountain, including the Sutra Repository. He nodded to Sun Wukong, then sat cross-legged at a table in the pavilion. He then opened an unfinished book and began to study it carefully, occasionally making notes in a nearby book.
After Lan Cai was fully focused, Sun Wukong quietly approached.
"Shadow God Picture? Mr. Divine Lesson?"
He saw it clearly.
On the opened page of the booklet called Shadow God Picture, there was a picture of a young and beautiful woman and a strange cypress tree standing in front of the woman.
There is a small note next to it: The forest is deep and green, without any worldly dust. The branches are always in harmony, and the heart of Tao is as firm as a rock.
It was written at the foot of the hall: Mr. Divine Course.
"Interesting, interesting." Sun Wukong became interested, so he walked closer with a broom and stretched out his hand to turn to the other page of the book.
Snapped!
Lan Cai, however, closed the Shadow God Picture and said, "Wukong, you can't watch this."
Sun Wukong asked, "Oh, why can't I see it?"
Lan Cai said seriously, "The secret of heaven cannot be revealed."
Sun Wukong chuckled and said, "You're just being mysterious. I've seen countless insignificant little demons like this on my journey west. What's there to hide?"
Lan Cai shook his head: "I am not as good as you. I only know a few divination techniques. I must stick to this path to avoid regrets when disaster strikes in the future."
Having said that, Sun Wukong did not force it and walked away with the broom.
Lan Cai watched the Monkey King leave, frowned and thought for a moment, then waved his sleeves and made a divination.
As soon as he saw the hexagram, his face changed drastically.
Great omen!
"Just a little demon was exposed, why is it so serious? Or is there something else going on?"
……
Another day.
Sun Wukong went to the Rotten Peach Mountain behind the mountain to chop wood, but he had other intentions.
Because he heard that the woodcutter sometimes came here to chop wood, and maybe he could meet him.
"Watching chess and losing..."
Suddenly, a melodious singing voice could be heard faintly.
"I really met him!" A divine light flashed in Sun Wukong's eyes, and he took out a bow and arrow.
Then, he flashed and appeared in front of the woodcutter in an instant.
"Ding ding, woodcutter! Wow!" The woodcutter was startled by the sudden appearance of the Monkey King. "You, man, have no idea how to handle the seriousness of the situation. What should I do if you scare a woodcutter like me?!"
"You fake woodcutter, if you keep pretending, I will shoot you into the sky!" Sun Wukong's eyes were like arrows, and he grabbed the woodcutter's arm.
The woodcutter looked up and said with a smile, "Your bow is too light to reach the sky."
Sun Wukong extended his bow and arrow, saying, "You know a lot, don't you? Come and shoot an arrow."
The woodcutter was stunned for a moment, then shook his head and said, "I can't shoot."
Sun Wukong came closer and sneered, "I'll let you cum!"
The woodcutter was silent, staring at the bow and arrow in front of him for a while, and finally sighed softly and took the bow and arrow.
The moment he held the bow in his hand, he instantly became very serious.
call out!
Then, without even looking, he raised his hand, drew his bow, and shot an arrow into the sky.
"Ah..."
The next moment, a passing goose fell from the sky and soon became silent.
"Hmph, you said you can't shoot!" Sun Wukong snorted coldly.
