Mystery: Who has seen my brother?
Chapter 67 Fraud
Chapter 67 Fraud
Dana opened the briefcase, turned it towards Lanevus, and closed it three seconds later, placing a stack of gold pounds next to the metal briefcase.
"You privately traded extraordinary materials with Baron Edgar." After scrutinizing him for two seconds, seeing that Lanevus still showed no sign of admitting it, Dunn said in a deep voice, "No need to quibble or deny."
Lanevus's face looked grim. He didn't know why he was exposed, but now he had to find a way to escape.
"We will investigate you and decide how to deal with you based on that." Dunn's deep gray eyes stared at the young man opposite him. "If you haven't done anything illegal, you can become our informant, which is the best outcome. Of course, if you have, you may need to stay in jail for a while, and in the worst case..."
After a pause, Dunn looked at Lanevus. Seeing his expression becoming increasingly grim, he chuckled and said, "Perhaps you know."
Lanevus knew that becoming a Sealed Artifact Tester was the most serious consequence, essentially equivalent to a death penalty. No, it was even more terrifying than a death penalty.
He thought of what he had done and gritted his teeth secretly.
It must not be discovered.
"I'm a Beyonder working for Baron Edgar," Lanevus said in a deep breath. "That Beyonder material is Baron Edgar's reward for me. The Church doesn't allow the trading of Beyonder materials, so I'm using this method."
As a con man, Lanevus is well versed in the art of communication.
Through some intimidation and rhetoric, psychological pressure is exerted on the target to force them to confess. In fact, they may not know much or even nothing at all.
Many nobles knew about Beyonders, and quite a few of them were also Beyonders. Unless they were old nobles who had lost their wealth, even those who weren't Beyonders themselves would hire Beyonders for protection. Although Baron Edgar was a new noble, he had been in the aristocratic world for many years and was extremely wealthy. It wasn't surprising that he was both a Beyonder and employed Beyonders.
Although most of the extraordinary people hired by the nobles come from the church, there are also cases of hiring wild extraordinary people. As long as they can pass the church's inspection and are not exposed, the church can turn a blind eye.
Lanevus had used a fake identity to commit crimes before, so it would be difficult to thoroughly investigate.
As long as they believe that I am a hired Beyonder, they will be much more lax in their investigation, and I will have a chance to survive.
Dina and Cecima looked at each other and realized that this statement was indeed correct.
"Name, and how did you know Baron Edgar?" Dana asked, holding a pen in one hand. "Why did he hire you?"
"Lanrvus, my name is Lanrvus. I once worked for the Baron's business. He appreciated my abilities and character." Lanrvus paused for a moment before continuing, "Then the Baron discovered I was a Beyonder and hired me as a bodyguard."
After writing Lanevus's words down in his notebook, Dana said, "Are you a wild Beyonder?"
"It doesn't count."
Dana paused while writing, then started writing again.
Cecima and Dunn's expressions suddenly darkened as they stared at Lanevus.
A glint of cunning flashed across Lanevus's eyes. "After all, I work for Baron Edgar."
The three of them immediately relaxed.
Dunn frowned and said, "Have you joined a secret organization?"
"From the time I became a Beyonder until now, I've mostly been alone. My formulas, my ingredients, and my potions are all acquired through my own efforts." Lanevus said, "Gentlemen, if I joined a secret organization, would I still have to endure fear and work for a noble just for a single ingredient? Why not get it through the organization? Wouldn't that be safer?"
Dana recorded every word of Lanevus truthfully.
"You haven't done anything illegal or criminal?"
"Of course I have," Lanevus sneered. "I once ambushed a pesky policeman on his way home and gave him some 'little gifts' through the window."
"What little gift?"
"Oh, gentlemen, what a shame you didn't see it," Lanevus curled his lips, as if recalling something amusing. "I saw him screaming with my own eyes when footwashing water fell from the sky. It was still hot."
"Is it any wonder you're imprisoning me for this?"
Dunn was silent for a moment. This should be considered as assaulting a police officer. Although illegal, the circumstances were not serious. It was more like a prank.
Dana asked a few more questions, and Lanevus answered them all, with no problem in his answers.
Cecima said, "We will investigate you. If we find that you have concealed something or lied, the punishment you face will be doubled."
"Now, you have one last chance."
"Gentlemen, I am not lying."
Lanevus said this without changing his expression.
Cecima stared at him for a moment and then said, "We understand, but you will be detained within the Chanis Gate until the investigation is complete."
"No problem, sir. I hope you can finish the interrogation soon." Lanevus smiled. Perhaps because of his facial features, the corners of his mouth always gave people a sense of mockery. "Can I write a letter while I'm in custody?"
"What letter?" asked Cecima.
"I've discussed some business cooperation with several gentlemen and ladies. Given the current situation, I'll probably be missing for several days. To prevent unnecessary losses, I must terminate my cooperation with them."
Lanevus was planning a scam and was about to close it. Gracis was about to invest, and there were more people involved. But now he had to give up and get out of here quickly.
Lanevus finally calmed down after Megose became pregnant with the true Creator's child. He understood that he would be the first to die after the birth of the Son of God, so he began to prepare to flee Tingen. His original plan was to obtain materials from Baron Edgar, then close the net and get the money so he could leave Tingen.
Unexpectedly, he ran into an official Beyonder. He cursed his bad luck in his heart.
"You have been hired by Baron Edgar and there is still time to discuss business cooperation." said Cecima.
"Of course," Lanevus replied. "I have plenty of free time. Why not use it to do some business?"
"Yes, but the letter must be checked by us and can only be forwarded by us."
"Of course, that's no problem," Lanevus said calmly, "As long as the letter reaches those people, that's all that's needed."
"Also, I hope you can return my glasses to me," Lanevus said. "Thank you."
"The lens is broken. If you can be released, we will compensate you for your losses after you are released."
……
The next day, Blackthorn Security Company
"Good morning, Klein." Roxanne's sweet voice sounded, with a hint of curiosity and excitement in her tone.
"Good morning, Miss," Crane replied, "You seem very excited."
Luo Shan looked around. Although there was no one around, she still tiptoed over to Klein, lifting her skirt. She lowered her voice and whispered, "Last night, the captain and his men captured a wild Beyonder."
"Miss," Klein said, feeling somewhat amused, "We are just discussing routine company matters, not a spy meeting."
By the way, didn't the captain and his team go deal with Ruirui's matter last night? They even found a wild Beyonder along the way.
"No," Luo Shan shook her head firmly. "I don't want the captain to find out I'm not working seriously." "Can you go and take a look?" Luo Shan asked expectantly. "Take a look at that wild Beyonder, and then tell me what he's like and why he was captured?"
"Are you curious?" Klein asked.
"Yes," Luo Shan said with a smile, "This is the first wild Beyonder that has been captured since I joined the company."
After saying that, she walked back in frustration. "It's a pity, I still have to work, otherwise I would definitely go and see it myself."
Klein nodded. "Okay, I understand. Where is that wild Beyonder?"
"Behind the Chanis Gate, the captain is guarding him inside." Luo Shan raised her head and answered with shining eyes.
As energetic as ever, Klein thought to himself, straightening his hat and walking towards Chanis Gate.
Walking down the deep and quiet corridor and stairs, Klein arrived in front of Chanis's door, pushed it open, and entered the room where the wild Beyonders were imprisoned.
Klein looked behind Chanis's door. The captain and a black-haired young man were sitting on chairs. The black-haired young man was wearing silver handcuffs and was leisurely reading a newspaper. He must be the wild Beyonder.
The captain did nothing but sit and watch over the wild extraordinary man.
"Captain," Klein greeted Dunn, "Good morning."
Lanevus saw a black-haired young man walk in. He put down the newspaper and said to Klein, "Good morning, Mr. Nighthawk."
Klein was stunned for a moment, then immediately responded out of politeness.
"Good morning," Dunn turned around and responded, "Did Roxanne ask you to come?"
Klein nodded, then shook his head. "Actually, I'd like to know more about it, too."
Dunn briefly explained what happened last night to Klein.
Klein sighed inwardly, saying, "Mr. Lanevus's luck is truly terrible."
"Here's the interrogation record of Lanevus last night. Would you like to take a look?" Dunn asked.
Dunn took out a notebook from a drawer and handed it to Klein.
Klein took the notebook, thanked him, and began to flip through it.
"Ah."
A light laugh suddenly rang in Klein's ears.
Sister?
"What do you think is wrong with the interrogation record?" Eve's voice echoed in Klein's mind.
Klein looked through it carefully but didn't see any problems.
"Look at it again," Eve said.
Klein read it again and suddenly realized that Lanevus didn't actually give direct answers to some questions, or he said a lot more after giving direct answers.
He read it again, assuming it was false, and found that Lanevus's answer was extremely misleading and ambiguous.
These answers are all subject to divination, which means there is no possibility of lying.
But only half the truth is not the truth.
Klein had seen some rhetoric techniques online before. They used methods like leaving a sentence half-answered or answering questions irrelevantly, misleading others and guiding their thinking, thus deceiving them without lying.
Klein opened his mouth, wanting to tell the captain about this doubt, but suddenly it occurred to him that the captain and his team were experienced official Beyonders, so why hadn't they noticed it?
That "audience" again?
"Captain, Klein, good morning," Leonard said as he walked in. He still looked like a romantic poet, with the top two buttons of his shirt always undone. "Is this the wild Beyonder?"
Lanevus nodded nonchalantly and said, "Good morning, Mr. Nightwatchman."
Leonard was stunned for a moment, just like Klein. This wild Beyonder didn't seem to be afraid or nervous at all.
"Ah? Good morning." Although a little surprised, Leonard replied out of politeness.
"Klein, what are you holding in your hand?" Leonard asked, looking at the notebook in Klein's hand.
Klein handed the notebook to Leonard and said, "This gentleman's interrogation record."
Leonard took the notebook and flipped through it. Klein was observing his expression.
He was flipping through the pages with no expression on his face. Then he suddenly tilted his head and tilted his ear as if listening to something.
Leonard's action was too obvious, Klein complained in his heart. Anyone who knew would immediately tell that he was listening to a being speak.
This time Leonard listened attentively for a while longer, probably because the angel said more.
Why is it the other way around?
Shouldn't the elder sister say a lot and the angel say very little?
The last time Klein came into contact with the being inside Leonard, he felt that "He" wasn't a talkative person, at least not as talkative as his older sister.
Did their souls swap?
Klein said silently in his heart, of course he knew this was impossible.
The poet's face suddenly changed, and then he immediately restrained the abnormality on his face.
Unfortunately, this scene was witnessed by Klein, Dunn, and Lanevus.
Klein complained in his heart, "My poet classmate's acting is not good."
He glanced at Lanevus behind him. The wild Beyonder didn't show any abnormal behavior.
I hope so.
Klein took a step forward and asked, "Leonard, are you feeling unwell?"
"Yeah," Leonard nodded immediately, "My stomach just suddenly felt a pang of pain. It might be because I didn't have dinner last night and breakfast this morning."
"Then go rest for a while and have breakfast," Dunn said with a frown. "You have to take care of yourself and eat on time, otherwise you'll get a stomachache. Emperor Roselle once said, 'Stomachache isn't a disease, but it can be fatal.'"
"I understand, Captain."
