Chapter 507 The Mongols Are No Longer Reliable
Southern Mongolia, Khalkha Right Banner, the tent of Darhan Beile Lawangdorji.
This place is located near Baiyunebo in Inner Mongolia in later generations. The water and grass are also sufficient. Three to four thousand herdsmen directly under Lawangdorji roam here.
As winter approaches, herders are busy fattening their livestock and setting up winter tents in the mountains.
They were extremely busy and did not feel the tense feeling of the interior where turmoil was rampant.
Lawangdorji was quite favored during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. He married Emperor Qianlong's seventh daughter, Princess Hejing of the First Rank, and was considered a star among the Mongols during the Qianlong period.
He was also the only person in the Qing Dynasty who was allowed to remarry after the princess died of illness, which shows how favored he was.
On his own, Lawangdorji also has a famous ancestor.
His surname is Borjigit, and this surname has another translation, which is Borjigin, a true descendant of the Golden Family.
Lawangdorji's grandfather was very famous. He was Prince Chaoyong Celeng, who was given the name Chaoyong. He defeated the Dzungar Khanate many times during the reigns of Kangxi and Yongzheng, and made great contributions to the stability of the northwestern territory.
However, Lawangdorji's most famous deed was saving the emperor in the eighth year of Jiaqing (1803).
That year, Chen De, a cook who was fired from the Imperial Household Department, lost his livelihood and wanted to commit suicide. However, before he could do it, this old man from Henan thought about it again.
I feel like I've lived an obscure life, a failure. If I just die like this, wouldn't that be like "suicide without anyone knowing, wouldn't it be a waste of life?"
So he took advantage of his familiarity with the palace and ran to the Forbidden City with a knife, intending to kill any palace maid or eunuch so that the whole world would know about him and he could die in glory.
The result was just like that. As soon as he entered the palace, he happened to meet Jiaqing returning. Without thinking, Chen De took out a knife, rushed forward and stabbed Jiaqing.
At that time, the imperial guards around were stunned. Seeing that Jiaqing was about to be stabbed to death by the cook, which would become a joke for all ages, Jiaqing's brother-in-law Lawangdorji ignored the danger and was the first to hug Chen De, thus saving Jiaqing's life.
However, in this time and space, facing the Qing Dynasty which had basically perished, Lawangdorji was not so loyal, because he needed to eat, and the herdsmen under him also needed to eat.
Although the Qing Dynasty continued to marry into the Mongolian territories, there were 23 princes appointed in the small Mongolian territories alone.
But this was all lip service. A bunch of princes in southern Mongolia sounded awe-inspiring, but were actually extremely poor.
How poor were they exactly? Take Lawangdorji, the hereditary Jasak Heshuo Prince of the Khalkha Right Banner of Inner Jasak Mongolia, for example. He received two incomes from the Qing Dynasty every year, which amounted to a total of 500 dan of grain.
Among them, the salary of the son-in-law was 300 dan of rice, and the reward of silk and satin from the Heshuo Prince was equivalent to 200 dan of rice.
Even with such a small salary, after the death of Emperor Qianlong's seventh daughter, whom Lawangdorji married, his salary as a son-in-law was gone, and he was only left with the prince's salary of 200 dan.
After losing the 300 dan of rice that was granted to him as a son-in-law, Lawangdorji could no longer make ends meet, so he crossed the border to the territory of Chechen Khan of Mongolia in the northern desert to graze his livestock.
This seriously violated the Qing Dynasty's regulations that prohibited Mongolians from private nomadic activities. Emperor Qianlong was furious and stripped Lawangdorji of his title of Prince and stopped paying the last 200 dan of rice in salary.
During the Qianlong period, one stone of rice, no matter how good the quality, would only cost three taels of silver at most, and two hundred stones, considered a great deal, would only cost six hundred taels of silver.
But Lawangdorji, a prince, could not hold on for just one year and had to go to Emperor Qianlong to beg for mercy. He really could not survive.
Only then did Qianlong show leniency and did not restore his princely title, but gave him the rice and salary as a reward.
Sure enough, it was the relatives who were most ruthless. The Qing Dynasty claimed that Manchus and Mongols were one family, but in fact they did not allow the Mongols to roam. They confined them to designated pastures and used the Yellow Sect to force a large number of men to become monks. Finally, they severely restricted their income.
This made the Mongolians south of the Gobi Desert, which was known for its prosperity during the Ming Dynasty, suffer from the Qing Dynasty's turmoil for more than a hundred years. Even the Han people, who were second-class citizens, could not help but shed tears of sympathy and say how pitiful they were when they saw their plight.
In Lawangdorji's tent, Yongyan, the sixteenth son of Emperor Qianlong, was still chattering excitedly, completely unaware of the expressions of the Mongolians around him.
Yongyan, the dwarf born to the Korean girl Jin Jia, had a pointed face and monkey cheeks, and suffered from mental illnesses similar to depression, such as irritability, insomnia, nonsense, crying and laughing.
When he ran from Guihua City, he suffered a great deal of stimulation and his symptoms became more serious.
Yongyan started shouting and told Lawangdorji to muster up the courage of his ancestors. As long as they fought back to Beijing, he would let his eighth brother Yongxuan also confer the title of Prince Chaoyong on Lawangdorji, just like his grandfather Celeng.
Suddenly, as if a disaster was about to happen, he was in a low mood, with fear in his eyes, and kept shouting that the Han cavalry was chasing him, and Emperor Mo sent 100,000 heavenly soldiers to hunt him down.
After receiving the secret letter from Lawangdorji, his cousin, the Prince of Zhuolikitu of the Sizi Tribe, Lashiyampile, came to the alliance and said to Lawangdorji helplessly:
"It seems the Qing Dynasty is indeed doomed. The Sixteenth Prince was actually frightened to death by the Han people.
I heard that the Eighth Prince Yongxuan doesn't look like a king either. We can't risk the lives of the men in our tribe. Let's go and protect these two brothers."
After hearing this, Chelendorji, the Zasakdorlo Prince of Jinong, Ikh Ju League and Ordos Left Middle Banner, was much more straightforward.
"What's the point of supporting us? Others may not know how important we, the Zasaks of the Southern Desert, are, but don't we know it ourselves?
The warriors of our alliance have long been unable to ride wild horses or draw strong bows. Normally, when the Qing Dynasty comes to inspect, we hire bodyguards from northern Shanxi to act as a front.
Now the Han Emperor Guangzhong's elder brother, Duke Qiong, is recruiting those escorts in Datong to establish the Daibei Cavalry Division.
Once he finishes building it, we will either go to Mobei or surrender. What's the point of talking about protection? Just save your lives, both of you!"
The escort that Chelendorji mentioned was the Daibei knight that Mo Zibu had his eyes on.
These people are mainly Han people, supplemented by a small number of Mongolians. They make a living by escorting caravans traveling west for generations, so they are also called escorts.
The Qing Dynasty's policies were still too harsh, which led to some Mongolians on the grassland who were unwilling to live in a muddle all their lives and were trying to find a way out, and the same was true for the Han people.
In addition, Daibei has been the junction of grassland and farming since ancient times. It has always had a tradition of riding and shooting, and the people are tough. Therefore, a small number of knights who are good at riding and shooting and brave are still retained.
Although there are not many people, only one-fifth of what Mo Zibu originally estimated, with a total of only about a thousand people, as long as they are armed, there will be no problem in defeating the completely declined Mongolia south of the desert.
After hearing what Chelengdorji said, the two Lawangdorji brothers looked a little embarrassed and were still thinking about how to reply. But Yongyan, who was talking to himself, suddenly went crazy when he heard the five words "Emperor Guangzhong".
He picked up the wine jug on the table and smashed it on his head.
Chelengdorji was unable to dodge and was hit on the forehead by a red envelope. The warm and sticky wine with honey splashed all over him.
Chelendorji was stunned for a moment, his eyes rolled, a vicious look inadvertently revealed on his face, and then he became furious.
"You son of a bitch, I'm going to kill you!"
After roaring, Chelendorji rushed forward like a wild boar and knocked Yongyan to the ground in an instant.
Poor Yongyan was so thin and small that he could not withstand the impact of a strong man like Che Lengdorji.
He fell heavily to the ground, feeling dizzy. Before he could say anything, he felt a chill in his chest, followed by a warm feeling, and his breathing became a little difficult.
"No, no..." Lawangdorji shouted, but stopped abruptly at the next word, because he was horrified to see Chelendorji pull out the dagger from his waist and stabbed it fiercely at Yongyan's chest.
Chelendorji did it on purpose, and this impulsive killing was very consistent with his personality.
After Yongyan had fallen to the ground and could only twitch slightly, and was sure that he was about to die, Chelendorji slowly stood up and looked at his brother Lawangdorji behind him.
The fact that the two brothers did not dare to stop him had given Cherengdorji great confidence, and he handed the dagger to Rashyampil.
"Prince, my brother, there is no way out. Shall we go to Datong together, or to Mobei?"
At this time, people outside heard the sounds from inside the tent, and Kuku's footsteps and shouts were heard.
Yongyan was able to escape from Beijing and Guihua successively because he still had some guards.
Among the tens of thousands of bannermen in Beijing, there were still some who wanted to avenge their relatives who died in Beihe and refused to surrender to Dayu.
Cold sweat broke out on Lashiyampile's forehead. After thinking quickly for a few seconds, he suddenly took the dagger from Chelendorji's hand, pulled Lawangdorji together, and the two brothers stabbed Yongyan's chest several more times as he was still twitching slightly on the ground.
This time, Yongyan stopped even the slightest twitching and became completely motionless.
Chelendorji was overjoyed and pulled the two brothers out of the tent. The three of them raised their bloody hands high. Chelendorji shouted loudly:
"My men, kill all the bannermen, and let's go to Datong to surrender to the Emperor!"
In an instant, the Mongols and Bannermen who had been gathered closely together suddenly turned against each other. Two or three hundred Mongolian guards surrounded the Bannermen guards, who were only one tenth of their number, and attacked them with swords and guns.
. . . .
In Datong Prefecture, Mo Zihuang was meticulously testing the riding, archery, and martial arts skills of the knights who had been summoned to the training ground.
Under a large red flag with a golden sun and moon, symbolizing the emperor's presence, and under a gate flag representing the imperial envoy inspecting the military affairs of the northern desert and the southern desert.
Mo Zihuang, the Duke of Dayu Qiong, sat in the center, with twenty Han generals from the Jinyiwei Palace Front Division on his left and right, wearing golden helmets and armor, and equipped with axes, halberds, hooks and forks.
On the right side of the parade ground, two hundred officers and soldiers of the Imperial Guards Regiment stood tall, wearing vermilion-painted helmets with the word "Yong" on them, red mandarin duck-shaped battle robes, and holding red-painted Flying Leopard 1775 long-barreled flintlock rifles.
On the left side of the parade ground, fifty cuirassiers of the Dragon Guards Regiment, wearing shining plate armor.
The fifty Hussars, dressed in gorgeous brocade robes and scarlet cloaks, looked like celestial soldiers.
This made the Daibei knights who came to respond to the call so excited that they dared not even breathe.
In their view, what are these heavenly soldiers on the parade ground? They are the guarantee for the new Great Yu Dynasty for generations to come, and they are also the proof that they have joined a powerful dynasty.
Of course, the most common thing these knights who came to answer the call said was "Zhu Hongwu has returned, and we Han people naturally have to serve."
Mo Zihuang's response was also very appropriate. This 55-year-old emperor's elder brother had nothing remarkable to say about his life in the first 40 years, and there was no apparent talent.
But once his status rises, his abilities increase rapidly.
This kind of thing, while sitting in Daibei, can scare a large number of Mongolian princes and nobles in the south of the desert, and it can be done properly.
Well, it’s more than just decent.
Two months ago, Mo Zihuang personally arranged for the 300-horseman Longxiang Cavalry Regiment of the Imperial Guard and the 500-horseman Huainan Cavalry Regiment of the Beijing Camp to raid Guihua City (Hohhot) under the leadership of Yang Kaijia.
In one battle, they defeated 4,000 Chahar and Tumed cavalry, killed more than 600 in battle, captured thousands, and killed Aisin Gioro Hongshang, the governor of Chahar of the Qing Dynasty, the general of Suiyuan, and the twelfth son of Yinzhen, the eldest son of Emperor Kangxi.
It was this battle that almost scared Yongyan crazy.
In the residence of the Imperial Envoy of Datong, Mo Zihuang sat on his seat with a majestic horse and a golden sword, while Chelengdorji and three other Mongols were trembling with fear.
Mo Zihuang is considered the ugliest among the four brothers, but it is precisely this ugly and ferocious appearance, coupled with his current dominance and serious expression, that makes him look even more frightening.
It has some of the aura of Manggurtai in the early Qing Dynasty.
"You have only a few thousand people and an annual income of a few thousand taels of silver. Do you really think you can be called a king or a Khan?" Mo Zihuang smiled contemptuously.
"That's not just a false name that Ni Qing deliberately gave to you to deceive you.
The title of King of Dayu is not so cheap, and this imperial envoy is only a Duke now."
Chelendorji prostrated himself on the ground and replied softly, "The angels know clearly that sinners like us only seek to save our lives and give the people under our rule a way to live. How dare we continue to be the king of Dayu?
Moreover, the Imperial Envoy also knows that the emperors who rebelled against the Qing Dynasty said nice things, but in fact they wished that we Mongolians would have no descendants.
The criminals knew it all in their hearts, so they killed Yongyan and surrendered, only begging for Dayu's forgiveness."
After Chelengdorji finished speaking, the two brothers Lawangdorji and Lashiyampile also prostrated themselves on the ground and begged continuously.
Mo Zihuang knew at a glance that these Mongols had truly been tamed like dogs by the Qing Dynasty.
They were already extremely poor and could not even make ends meet without the support of the Han people.
Even when the Qing Dynasty designated grasslands and prohibited free nomadic migration, they almost lost the ability to migrate long distances.
Thinking of this, Mo Zihuang nodded. Now his Daibei Cavalry Regiment was about to be recruited, and it would only take two or three months to form combat effectiveness. He was not afraid of these Mongols doing anything dishonest.
"You're quite sensible. According to us warriors, the best approach for Dayu is to follow the example of the Ming Dynasty and launch another Lan Yu Northern Expedition, the fifth invasion of the desert north, to clean up the grasslands and eliminate the disaster."
Mist grass!
The three Mongolian kings were all scared silly. They couldn't let this happen. At that time, there was no Arutai, no Mahamu, and no Wang Baobao, the most extraordinary man in the world, on the grassland.
If the Han army of Dayu really wanted to go out of the border at this time, the Mongols in the south and north of the desert would have nowhere to escape, because the retreat route in the west had been blocked by the Russians and the Kazakh Three Yuz who were half-controlled by the Russians.
"Your Excellency the Imperial Envoy, please spare our lives. We will never have any second thoughts, never have any second thoughts!" Chelengdorji and others screamed miserably.
“Since you dare not have any second thoughts and are willing to serve the Great Emperor Yu Guangzhong just as you served the rebel emperors in the past, then you should quickly return and notify all the Zasaks in Inner and Outer Mongolia.
The Great Emperor will convene a meeting of all tribes in Chengde in June next year, and all the jasaks must bring the most beautiful girls and the bravest warriors of their tribes.
Anyone who dares not come here will have their tribe wiped out!"
