Usurpation of Mongolia: My father-in-law is Genghis Khan

Chapter 43: The Khuriltai, the Name of Genghis Khan

Chapter 43: The Khuriltai, the Name of Genghis Khan
In the spring of 1206 AD, on the banks of the Onon River.

A kurultai assembly was formally convened.

First, in a huge felt tent that could accommodate hundreds of people, Temujin, his mother, wife, children, brothers, sworn brothers, and even more than a hundred Mongolian nobles and their wives gathered together to select a new Khan for the entire grassland.

That’s right, select.

On the surface, Temujin obtained the Khan position through military strength, but in fact, it was elected by these Mongolian nobles.

In fact, this is a rule left over from when Mongolia was still a small tribe.

Only the one who is unanimously recognized by all the nobles can become the leader of the entire tribe.

It was precisely because of this rule that Temujin, who was not very powerful at the beginning, became the Khan of the Mongolian tribe and earned his first pot of gold through various means such as division and disintegration, alliances, and public opinion creation.

Now that Temujin wants to be the Khan of the entire grassland, he has no intention of changing this rule.

He ordered the convening of the kurultai, where the Mongolian nobles publicly nominated a new Khan.

Of course, there was no disturbance during the entire election process of the kurultai, and all the nobles agreed that Temujin should become the Great Khan of Mongolia.

The Mongolian nobles at this time truly recognized Temujin, the Khan who had experienced countless hardships and unified the dark, disordered and chaotically divided grasslands.

They might complain about Temujin, or have some reservations about him for their own interests, but when it came to public elections, they all agreed that Temujin should become the Great Khan of Mongolia.

There is no other reason, but because among the Mongols today, there is no one with a broader mind, a stronger heart, or a longer vision than Temujin. Temujin can lead the Mongols further.

In other words, Temujin was now the Khan who had led the Mongols the farthest.

And all the Mongolian nobles knew that this might just be the beginning.

In the huge kurultai assembly, no one opposed Temujin.

The public nomination is completed, and then the formal coronation ceremony will take place.

A three-meter-high altar had already been built, on which stood the "Nine-flag White Banner", the emblem of the Mongolian Empire, which symbolizes victory, happiness and auspiciousness.

This object is also called "Nine-legged White Banner" or "Nine-legged White Flag". It is composed of one main flag and eight secondary flags, a total of nine large flags, so the number "nine" is included in the name.

Nine is the extreme number.

A similar concept exists on the grasslands.

Beep~~
Beep~~
Following the sound of ox horns, Temujin came to the altar in a huge tent carried by five hundred grassland warriors.

Then, the 44-year-old Temujin walked slowly up to the altar alone.

Immediately afterwards, the all-knowing wizard Kuokuochu followed.

He announced loudly, "I, the all-knowing wizard Kokochu, convey the will of the Eternal Heaven: Temujin Borjigin is the Eternal Heaven's most beloved son. He deserves all the lands, people, and treasures in the world. The Eternal Heaven grants him the title: Genghis Khan!"

Temujin bowed slightly and said, "Temujin will obey the will of the Eternal Heaven!"

Then, he looked at the tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians in the audience and announced loudly, "I, Genghis Khan Temujin, declare that a new and great nation has been born! Its name is the Mongol Empire! Its national flag is the nine-flag white banner! It will forever be associated with victory, prosperity, and happiness!"

"Genghis Khan!"

"Genghis Khan!"

"Our Genghis Khan!"

"Genghis Khan of the grasslands, the darling of Eternal Heaven!"...

More than ten thousand soldiers, civilians and people watching the ceremony below the stage cheered in unison, cheering the entire grassland!
The cheers were full of sincerity.

It's not easy!

Since the collapse of the Uighur Empire two hundred years ago, the various tribes on the grasslands have never been unified.

There were many tribes, they killed each other and there were constant disputes. But now, Temujin, a great hero, has unified the entire grassland again!
Peace and stability finally came to the entire grassland.

How could people not cheer loudly?

Then, Temujin and Kokuchu walked down from the altar.

Tatatong'a walked up to the platform, read out Temujin's rewards to the founding heroes, and bestowed them with a golden seal.

There was no way. The Mongolian script had just been created, and Tatatong'a was the only person in the country who was proficient in Mongolian script. If he didn't read the edict, who would?

"Genghis Khan, blessed by the Eternal Heaven, has a message for the people of the world: The chief contributor to my founding of the Mongol Empire was Menglik's father. He grew up with me, was blessed and auspicious, and made great contributions to me.

I am deeply grateful for his kindness, and my descendants will never forget it.

In recognition of his merits, I grant him a hereditary rank of thousand households, with a special seat beside the Khan's throne. I hope he will attend the palace meetings every year and every month to discuss matters with me. I will grant him a salary, which will be enjoyed by his descendants forever."

Well, the first meritorious official honored by Temujin was actually a relative of his, his father Menglik.

But what can we do about it?

Who can say that he is older than Temujin’s godfather?

After the first decree was read out, there was a round of applause from the audience, which was quite enthusiastic.

This applause was Zhao Shuo's suggestion.

Otherwise, Temujin's decree couldn't be absolutely fair. If someone read out the decree and there was complete silence, or someone else read out the decree and there was jubilation, that would be a terrible sight.

Therefore, Temujin had already made arrangements for Hu Nan and told everyone clearly in advance that they should applaud after hearing the order.

Tatatong'a announced his second decree: "Genghis Khan, blessed by the Eternal Heaven, has a message for the people of the world: The second most meritorious official in establishing the Mongol Empire was Borchu. He is my brother-in-law and we have been friends since childhood.

Back then, my eight silver-gray geldings were stolen by horse thieves. I chased them for three days and met Borshu along the way. He was only ten years old, but he carried his father and mother on his back and joined me in the pursuit for three days and three nights, ultimately reclaiming the stolen horses.

Later, during the battle with the Tatars, it rained heavily after I had gone to bed. That night, Borshu stood with his felt coat spread out to prevent me from getting wet, in order to help me sleep.

Borchu's contributions are too numerous to mention, so I won't enumerate them all here. In short, he supported my good deeds and discouraged my bad ones, which enabled me to ascend to the throne of Genghis Khan. I now appoint him as a hereditary thousand-household commander, and he will be in charge of the right wing of the ten-thousand-household commandery, which borders Mount Altai.

Well, the second hero can also be considered a relative, he is Temujin’s sworn brother Borchu.

However, Borshu is much more powerful than Monlik and has many real military achievements.

The crowd's applause was even more enthusiastic than Monlik's.

Immediately afterwards, Tatatong'a read out Temujin's third decree.

"Genghis Khan, blessed by the Eternal Heaven, has a message for the people of the world: The third most meritorious official in establishing the Mongol Empire is Zhao Shuo."

According to historical records, Temujin called himself "I".

Because I really can't find a better translation than "朕", so I wrote Temujin called himself "朕", which is a little bit peaceful, so everyone will bear with it.
