Durin's Diary
Chapter 684 Decision
Chapter 684 Decision
Church of the God of Wisdom, mail room.
Austin Jacob was slumped in his chair, looking at his old friend Vulcan, showing off his gold cigarette case.
The latter was obviously annoyed by this, while the red-haired young lady beside Wakan sorted the letters in her hand and smiled helplessly: "Austin, my old senior, can you be more mature?"
"I'm very mature, dear Julie. You see, I'm already in my thirties and will soon be forty." Austin answered as he opened a pack of cigarettes. He flicked one to his old friend Vulcan and then put the other one to his kiss: ""
"But I think you're no different from a child." The red-haired young lady named Julie retorted with a narrowed smile.
"Is it because men stay young until they die?" Austin said as he sat up a little straighter. A parishioner walked in with a huge stack of mail, and Austin didn't want to trip him with his outstretched legs. "This is the first time I've seen the Archdiocese of Copenhagen as busy as it is today."
"You just don't come here often, my old friend. There have been busier times." Wakan lit a cigarette, biting it as he flipped through the letters in his hand and picked up the seal. "But now it's not as busy as it was during the war. When you were in that castle in the Great Woodland, at the mail distribution center in Vienna, Austria, hundreds of us deacons worked three shifts every day to sort the mail. It really kept us busy."
"At that time, it was true that Lord Durin would personally inquire about family letters every week. When he came across letters from those who died in the war, he would even make up for it with his own money," Austin sighed.
"Lord Durin is truly so kind. I've never met such a kind and loving nobleman." Julie said as she picked up a letter. "Hey, how come there's an internal letter from Lublin here?"
"I know this. Our secret service is conducting a special operation in Lublin. Who is this letter for?"
"Bishop Robin."
"Then give it to him directly. Bishop Robin has informed me that the letter from Lublin must be delivered to him as soon as possible."
Austin watched his friends talking while carelessly stroking the black cat that had jumped onto his lap, until Julie came up to him and said, "Uncle Austin, come with me. Uncle Robin keeps talking about you."
"Call me brother." Austin said with a smile.
"Don't act so naive." His friend Wakan laughed and retorted.
Austin smiled and pointed at him, then stood up.
The Julie in front of him was his and Wakan's sister - Austin was born in an orphanage, Wakan was of the same age as him, but Julie was a beautiful accident - Julie was born into the famous Veldora family, but lost her ability to speak due to an accident when she was young. Later, when she came to Copenhagen, she happened to encounter a turbulent period. She was separated from her family. The little girl was unfamiliar with the place and was picked up by Austin and Wakan.
Two sixteen-year-old boys who had just left the orphanage took the little girl to live in the sewers of Copenhagen for a week. Although life was hard, as long as they were still alive, the girl would have food to eat.
Until Julie's family came to the door, just when the two young people were about to get into trouble, the girl who had not spoken for three years called her father for the first time.
Marquis Vera, the head of the Veldora family, who was about to hit Austin with a stick, burst into tears of joy. After listening to his daughter's explanation, the old man admitted his mistake. Because of this experience, Austin had money to continue his studies, and Wakan was recommended by the Veldora family to join the church.
In Austin's eyes, although the Veldora family was not that good, at least the old man looked really handsome when he gave money.
The bishop who specifically requested to see Robin today was also a member of the Veldora family.
Austin followed Julie down the church corridor. The sunlight filtered through the windows and fell on them, bringing some warmth to each other in the cold winter. At the end of the corridor, in front of the office, Julie glanced at Austin and knocked on the door.
Austin calmly pressed the cigarette from his lips into the ashtray beside him.
Julie opened the door and waited for him to come over before taking the lead and walking into her uncle's office.
"It looks like our editor-in-chief Austin just put out his cigarette in the ashtray outside." The old man sitting at the back of the office smiled and looked at Austin.
Austin felt a little embarrassed, and he smiled as a way to relieve his own stupidity.
After taking the letter and taking a look at it, Robin Veldora nodded: "Julie, you go back first, Austin, you stay."
"Okay, uncle, please don't embarrass Austin."
"How could that be? Austin is the clever boy of my little angel." The old man smiled and watched Julie leave, then he motioned Austin to sit down.
Austin sat down across from the desk and asked, "Mr. Robin, what do you want to talk to me about?"
"Austin, thirty-something is still young for me, you know." Robin said, looking at Austin in front of him.
The latter nodded.
"So, I'm really curious why you took the initiative to ask to go to Orekhov. You know, Julie heard that you couldn't eat or sleep well after going to Orekhov." The old man said this and looked at Austin. "Do you feel that you are not worthy of Julie?"
Austin nodded calmly. "I am an orphan after all. There's a saying in Lord Durin's book that people should be self-aware. I agree with that."
"Silly child, my brother and I watched you and Wakan grow up. Don't we already know your character? Lord Durin gave you a golden cigarette case. Can anyone in this world say he has bad taste?" Robin laughed. "Young man, you're not young anymore. My brother means that if you really don't want to make Julie sad, then marry her."
Austin was silent for a moment: "Am I... am I really that popular, Mr. Robin?"
"I can count the number of people with gold cigarette cases on my hands, but you're the only one under forty. Julie used to like you, but I wasn't entirely satisfied. I thought you were just basking in the glory of saving her. Now it seems I was wrong. A young man like you was able to go to Orekhov Castle and survive a month there. Julie was right in her judgment. You, the hero who saved her, are now considered a good gentleman by many. The letters you wrote to your family are the most acclaimed letters in the entire church this year. I'm only now realizing that Julie's judgment was right, and it's me, an old man, who's blind."
Having said that, Robin smiled and looked at Austin, who was smiling awkwardly. "Go ahead. If I'm not mistaken, Julie must be waiting for you in the corridor. Don't let her waste her life, okay?"
Austin thought a lot in an instant.
He finally nodded.
"it is good."
