Chapter 173 The building is deserted!
Chapter 173 The building is deserted!
The night was as dark as ink. Moonlight filtered through sparse clouds, casting a silvery veil over the streets of Manhattan. Lynn Harvey's home was located in a quiet neighborhood. He stood at the window, gazing out at the night, his heart filled with mixed emotions. In the living room, Hans sat on the sofa, his expression tense and alert, his eyes flicking to the door, as if searching for an opportunity to escape.
Lin En turned around and looked at Hans, with a barely perceptible tenderness in her tone: "Hans, I know you are scared and confused right now. But please believe me, I really want to help you."
Hans remained silent, his head bowed, his hands clasped tightly together, a look of unease. He was well aware of the discrimination and persecution he faced as a mutant. And while Lynn, the FBI agent, might have temporarily protected him, who could guarantee he wouldn't suddenly change his mind and hand himself over to those who wanted to exploit him?
"Hans, I brought you home not to imprison you, but to put you in a safe place, away from those who are chasing you." Lynn continued, trying to impress Hans with his sincerity.
Hans looked up and looked into Lynn's eyes, as if searching for an answer. He slowly spoke, "Lynn, I know you're a good person, but I can't keep going like this. I have to find a place where I belong, a place that truly accepts me."
Lin En sighed. He understood Hans's worries and desires, but he also knew that letting Hans leave now would undoubtedly push him into a dangerous abyss.
"Hans, if you leave now, you'll only put yourself in greater danger," Lin En said earnestly. "Those who want to use you won't let you go. And I'm the only one who can protect you."
Hans fell silent. He knew Linn was telling the truth. But the fear and anxiety in his heart made it difficult for him to make a decision. He looked out the window at the night, and a strong urge surged in his heart - to run away!
Just as Lin En turned around to prepare some food for Hans, Hans suddenly stood up and walked towards the door quietly. His movements were light and quick, like a cheetah ready to pounce.
However, Lynn's alertness was far superior to that of an average person. He noticed something was wrong almost the moment Hans moved. He turned around and saw Hans about to touch the door handle.
"Hans, stop!" Lynn shouted sternly, his voice echoing in the night sky with unquestionable majesty.
Hans' body trembled slightly, he stopped, turned around and looked at Lin En. His eyes were filled with fear and unwillingness.
"You...you have discovered me a long time ago?" Hans' voice trembled a little. He didn't expect that his plan would be discovered so quickly.
Lin En walked up to Hans and stared at him with a sharp gaze. "Hans, do you think I'm bluffing? I'm telling you, I've been watching you since the moment you walked in. Every move you make, every look in your eyes, can't escape my eyes."
Hans lowered his head, knowing full well that he had nowhere to hide from Lynn. He tried to defend himself, "Lynn, I just... I just wanted to see the outside world. I didn't really want to run away."
Lin En shook his head, a hint of disappointment in his tone: "Hans, you are wrong. Running away will not solve the problem, it will only put you in deeper trouble. You should trust me and believe that I can help you find a better way out."
Hans was silent for a moment, then raised his head and looked into Lin's eyes. "Lin, I know you're a good person, and I want to believe you. But...but I'm really scared. I'm afraid those people will find me and lock me up in that dark place again."
Lin En looked into Hans's fear-filled eyes, and a strong desire to protect him surged within him. He reached out and gently patted Hans's shoulder. "Hans, don't be afraid. As long as I'm here, no one can hurt you. I'll help you find a place where you belong, a place where you can truly feel safe and free."
A tear flashed in Hans' eyes. He held Lin's hand tightly and said, "Lin, thank you. I really... I really don't know how to repay you."
Lin En smiled, her tone relaxed: "Repay? You just need to trust me. Now, let's go back to the living room and have a good chat about our next plan."
Lynn pulled Hans back to the living room, and the two sat on the sofa and began to discuss their next plan. Lynn explained his plan in detail to Hans, including how to find the experimental base, how to rescue other imprisoned mutants, and how to expose the crimes of those criminals.
As Hans listened to Lynn's plan, his fear and anxiety gradually dissipated. He began to believe that perhaps he could really find a place where he belonged, a place that would accept him and make him feel safe and free.
The next morning, sunlight pierced through the sparse clouds, illuminating the vast desert. The golden sand shimmered brilliantly in the sunlight, like a boundless golden ocean. Hans, Lynn, and a group of FBI agents stood at the desert's edge, their gaze fixed on the ancient map in Hans's hand.
"This is it." Hans pointed to a mark on the map, a hint of subtle nervousness in his tone. "This secret passage leads to the core area of the experimental base, but... but it may be full of traps."
Lin En looked at Hans, his eyes revealing determination and trust. "Hans, now that we've come here, there's no turning back. No matter how many dangers lie ahead, we must face them together."
Hans nodded, took a deep breath, as if to encourage himself. Then he squatted down and began digging in the sand. Soon, a hidden cave entrance appeared before their eyes. It was small, barely wide enough for one person to pass through, but a chilling aura emanated from within, making everyone shudder.
"Everyone, be careful and follow me," Hans said, and he was the first to enter the cave. Lynn and the FBI members followed closely behind, walking cautiously, fearing that they would trigger any traps.
The secret passage was dim and narrow, with only the faint light of a flashlight leading the way. The air was filled with a damp and musty smell, as if no one had been here for a long time. Hans walked in front, relying on his memory of the route, leading the group around one trap after another.
However, just as they were about to reach the end of the secret passage, a sudden and violent tremor was heard. Immediately afterwards, the walls on both sides of the secret passage began to slowly move, and it seemed that they were about to trap everyone inside.
"Oh no! It's a mechanism!" Hans shouted. He quickly stopped and tried to find a way to stop the mechanism.
Lin En followed closely behind Hans, his eyes searching the surroundings: "Hans, look for any switches or buttons!"
Hans fumbled anxiously along the wall, but it was completely smooth, with no room for maneuver. Just then, a more violent tremor erupted, and rubble began to fall from the top of the secret passage.
"Hurry! We have to get out of here as soon as possible!" Lynn shouted, pushing Hans in front of him hard, trying to make him speed up.
However, Hans suddenly stopped. He stared ahead, his eyes filled with fear: "Lin... ahead... there's no way forward!"
Lin En was stunned. He quickly walked over to Hans and saw that the secret passage ahead had been blocked by a huge stone slab. At this moment, the wall behind them was still approaching, and they were completely trapped here.
"How could this happen?" an FBI member shouted in horror.
"Don't panic!" Lin En shouted, trying to stay calm. "Hans, are you sure this is the only way out?"
Hans nodded, his face pale. "I...I'm sure. This is the only secret passage marked on the map."
Lin En frowned, knowing full well that he couldn't just sit there and wait for death. He looked around, trying to find a glimmer of hope. Suddenly, his eyes fell on a spot on the wall where the flashlight was shining. There was an inconspicuous protrusion there, which looked like some kind of mechanism.
"Hans, look at that bulge!" Lynn pointed at the bulge on the wall and said, "Try to see if you can press it down."
Upon hearing this, Hans immediately reached out and pressed the protrusion. With a click, the stone slab in front of him suddenly moved slowly, revealing a passage.
"Hurry! Let's go!" Lin En shouted, and he led everyone quickly through the passage and escaped from the dangerous secret passage.
When they finally emerged from the secret passage and arrived at a spacious underground space, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. This was clearly the core area of the experimental base, but at this moment it was unusually quiet, as if no one was there.
"Everyone be careful, there may be an ambush here." Lin En reminded, and he led everyone to explore forward carefully.
However, their vigilance didn't last long. Just as they were about to reach a laboratory, a sudden burst of gunfire rang out. Bullets echoed through the empty underground space, narrowly avoiding the group's vital points. "Take cover!" Lynn shouted, quickly pulling Hans behind a nearby lab table. The other FBI members also sought cover, engaging in a fierce exchange of fire.
The enemy was clearly well prepared, with a large number of people and well-equipped. Although Lynn and the FBI fought hard, they gradually began to lose the upper hand.
"Hans, do you have any way to help us out of this predicament?" Lynn asked Hans while firing back.
Hans looked around nervously, and suddenly his eyes fell on a control panel: "Lynn, over there! That control panel may control the defense system here!"
Upon hearing this, Lin En immediately aimed at the control panel. He took a deep breath and pulled the trigger steadily. The bullet accurately hit a button on the control panel, and suddenly an alarm sounded throughout the underground space.
The enemy was obviously startled by the sudden alarm, and their offensive weakened instantly. Lynn and the FBI members took the opportunity to launch a counterattack. They used the terrain advantage to gradually force the enemy back.
After a fierce battle, the enemy was finally repelled. Although Lin En and the FBI members suffered minor injuries, they managed to escape with their lives. Looking at the mess and the enemy corpses on the ground, they felt a wave of fear.
"Hans, are you okay?" Lynn looked at Hans and asked with concern.
Hans shook his head. "I'm fine. Thank you, Lynn. If it weren't for you, I would have died here."
Lin En smiled and said, "We are partners, aren't we? Partners are meant to face difficulties together and defeat enemies together."
As he spoke, he patted Hans on the shoulder and said, "Okay, we have to get out of here quickly. There may be other ambushes here, so we must be careful."
Hans nodded and took a deep breath, as if preparing for the next challenge. Then, he followed Lynn and the FBI members and continued to delve deeper into the mysterious experimental base.
Lynn and Hans walked through the dark corridor, their footsteps echoing in the empty space. They arrived at a closed door, the mottled marks on it telling of its former glory and its current desolation. Lynn took a deep breath, grasped the doorknob, and pushed hard. The door slowly opened, revealing the interior of the mutant laboratory.
However, the sight that greeted them stunned them. The lab was completely empty. The once busy researchers, advanced experimental equipment, and imprisoned mutants were now gone. Only a solitary lab table, upon which lay some unfinished experimental equipment and scattered documents.
"How could this happen?" Hans said in disbelief, his eyes searching around the laboratory, hoping to find a clue.
Lin En frowned and walked to the lab table, carefully examining the documents. Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to a handwritten note. Scribbled on it were a few words: "Lisa, danger, go!"
"Lisa?" Hans repeated doubtfully. "Who is this?"
Lin En raised his head and looked at Hans, his eyes revealing a hint of worry: "It seems that we are too late. The people here may have evacuated in advance, but...but it seems that someone was left behind."
Hans was stunned. He quickly understood what Linn meant: "You mean, that Lisa?"
Lin En nodded and pointed to a hidden corner under the laboratory table: "Look there."
Hans followed Lin's finger and saw a little girl huddled in the corner. She was wearing ragged clothes, her hair was messy, and her face was full of fear and anxiety. Her eyes were fixed on Lin and Hans, as if they were her only hope at the moment.
"Lisa, don't be afraid." Lin En said softly. He tried to approach the little girl, but the little girl suddenly shrank back with a trace of vigilance in her eyes.
“Don’t come over here!” she screamed, her voice trembling. “Are you here to arrest me?”
Lin En was stunned. He didn't expect the little girl to react like this. He looked at Hans, who gently shook his head, signaling him not to be impatient.
"Lisa, we're not here to arrest you," Hans said gently. His voice seemed to have a magical effect, which eased the little girl's tension a little. "We're here to help you. Can you tell us what happened here?"
The little girl Lisa hesitated for a moment, looking at Linn and Hans, as if to judge whether they were trustworthy. Finally, she slowly opened her mouth and told what had happened.
It turns out that Lisa is a mutant, imprisoned in this laboratory because of her special abilities. The researchers have been conducting experiments on her, trying to find a way to control mutant abilities. However, just a few days ago, something unexpected happened in the laboratory. A group of unidentified people broke into the laboratory, killed most of the researchers, and attempted to take all the mutants away.
"I was being experimented on and was injected with a strange drug," Lisa said, a hint of fear in her voice. "That drug caused my abilities to go haywire. I... I killed several people."
Lin En and Hans were shocked when they heard this. They had never thought that this little girl had experienced such a terrible thing.
"What happened next?" Lynn asked.
"Later, those people seemed to notice something was wrong with me," Lisa continued. "They were afraid I would lose control again, so they left me here and fled."
Hans clenched his fists, a flash of anger in his eyes. "These people are truly insane! How could they treat you like this?"
Lisa lowered her head and said nothing. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she didn't let them fall. She knew crying wouldn't solve anything.
"Lisa, don't worry." Lin En said. He walked to Lisa and patted her shoulder gently. "We will protect you and won't let anyone hurt you again."
Lisa looked up at Lynn and Hans. A flicker of trust flashed in her eyes, but more of it was confusion and helplessness. She didn't know what her future would hold, nor did she know where to go.
"Lynn, what are we going to do next?" Hans asked, looking at Lisa with worry in his heart.
Lin En pondered for a moment, then slowly spoke: "We can't let Lisa stay here any longer. It's too dangerous here. We must find a safe place where she can live a normal life."
Hans nodded, knowing full well that Linn was telling the truth. However, they were now in the middle of a desolate desert, surrounded by desolate land. Where could they find a safe place?
"Maybe we can go find my friends." Lisa suddenly said, with a hint of hope in her voice, "They are also mutants, and they have been looking for a place that can accept us."
Lynn and Hans smiled at each other, as if they had seen a ray of hope. Perhaps Lisa's friends could really point them in the right direction and help them find a safe haven for mutants.
"Lisa, can you take us to your friends?" Lynn asked.
Lisa nodded: "I can try. But we have to be careful, there may be an ambush here."
