Chapter 215 About Danger and Truth
Chapter 215 About Danger and Truth
Kate gave an awkward laugh, "Okay… I'm just helping."
Lynn sighed and looked at her with complicated eyes, "Kate, next time before you help, think about your own safety first."
Kate didn't answer, but just looked at Lynn. At that moment, she saw a rare trace of soft concern in his coldness.
The lights in the police station were dim, and the air was filled with an unsettling smell—a mixture of sweat, disinfectant, and the stale scent of metal and concrete. As Lin En escorted the suspect to the station, the surrounding officers paused their work and watched him, his face stern, as he wheeled the panicked man toward the interrogation room. The metallic click of the door closing was particularly piercing in the silent hall.
The police officer in charge of the case came over. He was a middle-aged man named Thompson with an unshaven beard. There was a hint of fatigue in his expression, but his eyes showed some gratitude for Lynn's arrival.
"Agent Lynn," Thompson extended his hand, his tone full of undisguised respect. "You've apprehended an important individual. The suspect has been identified as the principal offender in the school shooting. This case is entirely thanks to you."
Lin En gently shook the other person's hand, his eyes calm as water, "It just happened that we ran into each other."
"But if it weren't for you, he would have gotten away long ago." Thompson sighed and turned to look at the door of the interrogation room. "We've been chasing him for three days. He's like a ghost, leaving almost no clues. I can't believe how you caught him."
"He was a little nervous, and his movements and actions gave him away." Lin En's tone was flat, as if he was stating a routine task. "However, you still have to interrogate him thoroughly. If he is the main culprit, there may be other accomplices behind him."
Thompson nodded. "You're right. We've contacted the psychologist and the interrogation team. We won't let him off the hook this time."
Lynn nodded slightly and turned to leave, but found Kate standing not far away, leaning against the wall, her arms folded across her chest, her eyes shining with excitement and concern.
"You're truly a hero this time," Kate teased, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "You directly helped the police solve the case. Even they look at you with new eyes."
"Not a hero, just luck." Lynn said calmly, but his eyes lingered on Kate for a moment, as if to confirm whether she was okay.
Kate obviously felt his gaze and couldn't help but smile. "Shouldn't you praise me? If I hadn't discovered him, you might still be leisurely choosing flavors at the ice cream stand today."
Lynn's brow furrowed slightly, "Kate, you shouldn't have chased after him."
"But what if I didn't chase him? He'd run away." Kate shrugged, a hint of stubbornness flashing in her eyes. "Besides, you caught him, didn't you?"
Lin En didn't respond. He just sighed slightly, with a hint of helplessness in his eyes.
"Okay, okay." Kate chuckled and waved her hand. "I know you're worried about me, but Lynn, this is what being a journalist means to me. If I have the opportunity to expose the truth, I won't back down."
"This isn't a question of retreat." Lynn said in a low voice, his eyes as sharp as a hawk's. "It's a question of safety."
Kate looked at him, speechless. She could sense the deep concern in Lynn's words, but her personality prevented her from compromising easily.
"Lynn," she said, her tone softening, "I know what you're worried about. But you also know that I won't change."
The two looked at each other for a while, and finally it was Lin En who looked away first. He shook his head helplessly, "You are always so stubborn."
Kate smiled, a hint of cunning between her eyebrows, "Then you can only continue to worry about me."
An hour later, Lynn and Kate left the police station. The night air was a bit chilly, and the street lights were still bright, but without the daytime hustle and bustle. They walked side by side down the street, neither of them rushing to speak.
"Lynn," Kate finally broke the silence, "Do you think my work is very similar to your mission?"
Lin En glanced at her sideways, frowning slightly, "What do you mean?"
"We're all looking for the truth, aren't we?" Kate raised the corner of her mouth, a hint of complicated emotions in her eyes, "It's just that you use your way, and I use mine."
Lynn was silent for a moment, then nodded, "Maybe. But your way is much more dangerous than mine."
"But is your way easy?" Kate raised an eyebrow and asked with a hint of curiosity in her eyes. "Lynn, you almost never talk about your work. You face more darkness every day than I do, don't you?"
Lynn stopped and stood under the streetlight, looking at her seriously. "Kate, my job is different from yours. In my world, no one cares who you are or what you believe in. There is only life and death, only enemies and goals."
Kate was stunned for a moment. She rarely heard Lynn speak in such a tone. Her voice was low but frank, and carried a weight that could not be ignored.
"But even so, you still chose it." Kate said softly, with a hint of emotion in her tone, "Just like I chose the profession of journalist."
Lin En didn't answer. His gaze drifted toward the distant street, a barely perceptible trace of fatigue plastered across his face. He understood the darkness and chaos of this world better than anyone else, and the only thing he could do was to become a barrier against it.
"Kate," he whispered, his voice soft and unremarkable, "Whatever you choose, I hope you understand that your life is more important than any truth."
Kate listened to this, and a complex emotion surged in her heart. She knew that Lin En was not good at speaking, but because of this, every word he said seemed particularly important.
"I'll be careful." Kate smiled slightly, her tone becoming more serious. "But I also hope that you can think more about yourself."
Lynn didn't say anything else, just nodded slightly.
The two of them walked to the door of a small roadside restaurant. Kate stopped and pointed inside. "I'm hungry. Do you want to come in and eat something?"
Lynn looked down at the time and finally nodded, "Okay."
The restaurant had a warm atmosphere, soft lighting, and some old photos and posters hanging on the walls, which made it look nostalgic and friendly. Kate ordered a plate of pasta, while Lynn just ordered a cup of coffee.
"You're always like this." Kate looked at his coffee and couldn't help but teasing him, "You don't eat anything, just rely on coffee to survive."
"I'm used to it." Lin En said lightly, his eyes fell on the window, but a barely perceptible smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.
Kate looked at him with her chin propped up, and suddenly said, "Lynn, sometimes I wonder when you can really relax?"
"What do you mean?" Lynn turned around, his brows raised slightly. "It means letting go of all this." Kate waved her hand, pointing at him. "Let go of your responsibilities as an agent, let go of the burdens you carry, and live a normal life like an ordinary person."
Lin En was silent for a moment, then slowly said, "Maybe, when the world no longer needs me."
Kate looked at him, a complex emotion flashing in her eyes, and finally just smiled, "Well, then I hope that day won't be too far away."
The two continued to eat, and the atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed.
The day after Kate's article appeared on the front page of the newspaper, it became the talk of the town. Her writing, as sharp and realistic as ever, captures the crimes behind the school shooting, the police's efforts, and ultimately, Lynn's astonishingly quick capture of the suspect. Most captivating, however, is her unique portrayal of Lynn.
She calls Lynn her "unsung guardian," without identifying him specifically or mentioning that he's an FBI agent, but instead depicts him as calm, resolute, and fearless in the face of danger—a hero who seeks neither applause nor fame.
On the day the newspaper was published, the newspaper's phone was almost blown away by calls from readers who wanted to know more about the "Unknown Guardian", and Kate's mailbox was also filled with letters from readers and colleagues.
"Kate, I don't think what you wrote is an article. It's more like the script for a heroic movie." The newspaper's editor-in-chief, a man in his fifties, walked into her office with an admiring look and slammed a copy of the morning newspaper on her desk. "Sales have soared 30%. Do you know what this means?"
Kate leaned back in her chair, crossed her arms, and raised an eyebrow. "Does this mean your bonus is a little bit bigger?"
The editor couldn't help but burst out laughing. "That's certainly true, but more importantly—Kate, you're our newspaper's star reporter. As a reward, starting today, you have a week's paid vacation. Put down your notebook and tape recorder and enjoy life."
Kate was stunned for a moment, then smiled faintly, "Paid vacation? That's rare for me."
"You should celebrate yourself." The editor turned and walked towards the door, waving back at her. "Don't thank me too much, and don't forget to have some fun."
Kate watched him leave, then glanced down at the newspaper on the table, a helpless smile on her lips. She really should relax, but the problem was that for a reporter who chased the truth all day, the word "relax" was so unfamiliar that it was a bit ridiculous.
Just as she was still thinking, her cell phone suddenly rang. Kate picked up the phone and saw a familiar name on the screen.
"Lynn?" Kate answered the phone with a hint of teasing in her tone. "You read the newspaper so soon and called to thank me for portraying you as a hero?"
"You should have told me that you had already written the whole article for me in your mind while I was chasing the suspect." Lin En's voice came from the other end of the phone, low and calm, with his usual indifference.
Kate couldn't help but laugh. "Don't be so cold. I just wrote what I saw. You did a great job, didn't you?"
There was silence on the other end of the phone for a moment, and then Lynn's voice came again, "The editor-in-chief gave you a vacation?"
"You're well-informed." Kate raised an eyebrow. "Yes, a week's vacation. But I haven't figured out how to spend the time yet."
"That's perfect." Lin En's tone was calm. "Are you free this afternoon?"
Kate was stunned for a moment, then a curious smile appeared on her lips, "Are you inviting me?"
"If you want to understand it that way." Lynn's tone was still calm, but at that moment, Kate seemed to catch a hint of imperceptible tenderness in his tone.
"Okay, I agree." Kate stood up and began to pack her things. "But you have to tell me where to go, right?"
"You'll know when you get there." Lynn's answer was simple and straightforward.
A few hours later, Kate stood on the dock under the Brooklyn Bridge. The cold wind blew her hair, bringing a slightly damp smell. She looked up at a small yacht anchored not far away. Lynn was standing on the deck of the yacht, looking at her with a sharp gaze.
"Yacht?" Kate walked forward and raised her eyebrows. "Lynn, you don't have this extravagant side, do you?"
"This belongs to a friend," Lin En said calmly, reaching out to help her onto the deck. "He rarely uses it, so he lent it to me temporarily."
Kate smiled, a hint of curiosity in her heart, "So, what is it that you specifically asked me to come here today?"
"Relax." Lynn started the yacht and slowly sailed away from the dock, looking at the water in the distance. "You have to learn to enjoy your vacation."
Kate stood beside him, looking at his focused profile, and couldn't help laughing. "This is not like your style, Lynn. Do you want me to be grateful to you, or do you want me to believe that you can really relax?"
"Maybe both." Lynn's tone was calm, but a faint smile appeared on the corner of his mouth.
As the yacht sailed toward the center of the river, the surrounding clamor gradually faded away, leaving only the sound of the wind and the gentle lapping of the waves. Kate leaned against the deck railing, her gaze sweeping across the calm water, and she felt unexpectedly relaxed.
"That's pretty good," Kate said softly, with a rare hint of satisfaction in her tone.
Lynn stood beside her, also staring at the water, and whispered, "You should give yourself more moments like this, Kate."
Kate turned her head to look at him, a complex emotion in her eyes, "What about you? Have you ever had such a moment?"
Lynn was silent for a moment, then whispered, "Not much. But occasionally."
Kate chuckled, her gaze returning to the water. "You're such a complicated person, Lynn. Sometimes I think you're colder than anyone else, but sometimes... I think you're softer than anyone else."
Lin En didn't answer, but just looked at her, with a hint in his eyes that she couldn't understand.
As the yacht glided slowly on the water, Kate suddenly turned around and looked at Lynn, "How did you know I needed this?"
Lin En put his hands in his pockets and said in a low voice with a hint of calmness, "You have written so many articles about danger and truth, but you have never written about yourself."
Kate was slightly startled, then smiled. "You want me to write an article about relaxation?"
"No." Lin En looked at her, with a hint of concern in his tone, "I just want you to know that sometimes, the truth also needs time to settle. You can't chase it forever without taking a break."
