Chapter 259 No mercy
The mutant's eyes were full of struggle, and the aura around him began to weaken. But at this moment, a police car drove up, and the police officers jumped out and quickly drew their guns at him.
"Don't move! Put your hands down, or we'll shoot!"
The mutant turned around angrily, his aura suddenly bursting out, knocking the police officer to the ground. Lynn seized the opportunity and rushed forward, cuffing his wrists with special handcuffs, quickly blocking his ability.
The mutant struggled for a moment, but found that he could no longer use his abilities, so he could only lower his head helplessly.
"You did what you had to do, Detective." One of the police officers stood up, panting, and said to Lynn, "Thank you. This guy almost killed us all."
Lin En nodded and handed the mutant to the police officer, while instructing him, "His emotions are very unstable. Send him to a specialized mutant supervision agency and let them handle it."
When he returned to the restaurant, Kate was waiting for him at the door, her face full of worry: "Are you okay?"
"It's okay." Lin En patted his clothes and smiled slightly, "But it seems we won't be able to have dessert."
Kate breathed a sigh of relief and said with a hint of sarcasm, "It's okay. At least I got to see another side of the FBI agent. You really are saving the world anytime, anywhere."
Lynn shrugged. "It's my duty. Now, how about we find a quiet place to have some coffee and make amends?"
Kate laughed softly, "Okay, but you have to promise there won't be any surprises this time."
The lights in the cafe were soft, and the air was filled with the aroma of coffee. Lynn and Kate sat by the window, and the hustle and bustle of the street outside seemed to have faded away, replaced by a peaceful atmosphere.
As the two were chatting about the day's events, a little girl with twin ponytails walked over to their table, holding a basket of flowers. She looked up and said, "Sir, Madam, would you like to buy some flowers? These flowers are very fresh."
Kate looked up and saw the little girl's smiling face. She couldn't help but smile: "Your flowers are indeed beautiful, but we just..."
Lin En interrupted her, reached into his pocket and took out a few banknotes, handing them to the little girl: "I want a bouquet."
The little girl happily took the money, picked out a bunch of gorgeous red roses from the basket, and handed it to Lynn: "Thank you, sir, I hope you have a wonderful evening!"
Lin En took the flowers, turned around, and handed the bouquet of red roses to Kate, with a slight smile on her lips: "Here you are, Kate. Thank you for letting me participate in your world."
Kate was slightly stunned, a look of surprise and emotion flashing in her eyes. She took the rose and gently smelled the fragrance. Then she looked up at Lin En, a gentle smile on her lips: "Lin En, I think I should be the one to thank you. With you by my side tonight, everything has become less bad."
Lin En lowered his head and took a sip of coffee, then smiled calmly: "Then I'll just take it as a mutual thank you."
Kate held the rose and leaned back in her chair, her eyes fixed on Lynn. Her tone was light but with a hint of seriousness: "Detective, you know what? Sometimes you really don't look like a cold FBI agent. Instead, you're very warm."
Lin En shrugged, a hint of teasing in his eyes: "Then can I take it as a compliment?"
"Of course." Kate smiled softly, "And it's a very high evaluation."
They both laughed, and the atmosphere became more relaxed.
As the night deepened, Lynn drove Kate to the hotel where she was staying. Kate was carrying a bag of red roses, with a look of weariness on her face, but more of a warm satisfaction.
"Thank you, Lynn. Tonight has been an unexpected and fulfilling evening." Kate stood at the door of the hotel and turned to smile at Lynn.
Lynn nodded, watched her enter the lobby, and then followed her to the front desk. He simply checked in and booked a room next to Kate's.
"You're really cautious." Kate teased, "Are you afraid that I might get into an accident?"
"It's not called being cautious," Lin En smiled calmly, "it's a professional habit."
The two returned to their rooms. Kate gently closed the door and placed the red roses in the vase provided in the room. Looking at the bright red, a smile appeared on the corner of her mouth.
A few hours passed, and the hotel gradually quieted down. However, at midnight, there was a sudden, rapid knock on Kate's door. A man's voice came from outside the door, muffled and with a strong smell of alcohol: "Miss, open the door! Don't pretend you can't hear..."
Kate was woken up, put on her coat and walked to the door. She looked through the peephole and saw a drunk standing outside. He leaned against the door frame, staggering, and didn't seem to realize that he had knocked on the wrong door.
Kate frowned and picked up her phone, ready to call the police, but she heard the door open next door. Lynn's voice was low but intimidating: "What are you doing?"
The drunk man looked back at Lin En, his eyes blurred, and muttered: "I... I'm looking for someone... Who are you?"
"No one knows you here, go back to your room." Lynn took a step forward, his tone as cold as ice.
The drunk was shocked by Lin En's momentum and was stunned for a moment, but still muttered reluctantly: "Leave me alone... I didn't do anything..."
Lynn's eyes darkened. She reached out and grabbed the drunk man's shoulder, forcing him away from Kate's door. Her voice lowered a few degrees: "I said, get out of here. Either leave on your own, or I'll take you to the front desk and let security handle it."
The drunk finally sobered up a little, a trace of fear flashing across his face. He struggled to nod and stumbled towards the elevator.
Lin En watched the drunk leave, then knocked on Kate's door. Kate opened the door and saw Lin En standing at the door, with a hint of apology in her eyes: "Did I disturb you?"
Kate shook her head and forced a smile: "It's okay. I always feel at ease with you around. Thank you."
Lynn nodded and said gently, "Lock the door and call me if you need anything. There won't be any more problems tonight."
Kate nodded and watched Lynn turn around and go back to her room. She closed the door, but an inexplicable sense of security surged in her heart.
The next morning, Lynn reported to FBI headquarters in New York. Dressed in a neat suit, he walked steadily into the reception hall. A receptionist briefly verified his identity and said with a smile, "Detective, today you're greeted by two of our senior detectives. They'll give you a tour of headquarters and explain our procedures."
Lynn nodded and politely thanked him. A few minutes later, two detectives appeared in the lobby. They approached from either side, their eyes glancing at Lynn indifferently. "Lynn Stacy, right?" one of the tall men spoke, his tone somewhat cold. "I'm John, and this is Eric. We'll be taking you to the headquarters."
Lin En extended his hand and said with a smile, "Thank you both."
However, the two of them just nodded slightly and did not shake hands with Lin En. Instead, they turned and walked in: "Follow us, don't fall behind."
Lin En noticed their somewhat aloof attitude, but he didn't show any displeasure. He followed the two of them, observing everything around him calmly.
John and Eric were obviously mutants. They moved freely in the headquarters, commanding their subordinates in a firm tone with an innate sense of superiority. However, throughout the tour, they gave Lynn almost no opportunity to participate. Whether it was work introductions or on-site demonstrations, he was just asked to stand by and watch.
"This is the specialized equipment we use to handle mutant-related cases," Eric said casually, pointing to a row of sophisticated instruments. "Of course, your Manhattan branch definitely hasn't seen ordinary equipment like this."
John agreed, "Yeah, ordinary branches don't have access to this kind of technology. The work here isn't something anyone can do."
Lin En remained silent, standing aside, listening and observing attentively. His eyes sometimes swept across the instruments, sometimes fell on the two detectives, but he never showed any emotion.
During the tour, several technicians passed by with equipment, and Eric casually explained something without explaining it to Lynn. When they demonstrated a key operation, they only gave a brief demonstration without inviting Lynn to participate.
John looked back at Lynn, his tone somewhat mocking: "How do you feel, Inspector? Is the environment of the New York headquarters much more shocking than your small branch?"
Lin En smiled slightly and said calmly, "It's indeed very advanced and worth learning. However, I believe that even the most advanced equipment cannot be operated without professional operators. I hope to have the opportunity to learn more about your practical operation this time."
Eric raised his eyebrows and sneered faintly, "The actual operation is not something that everyone can learn. It requires a long time of experience accumulation. For outsiders like you who come here to learn for a few days, just watching is enough."
Lin En still did not get angry, but nodded slightly: "Thank you for the reminder, I will try my best to seize this opportunity to learn."
Just as the tour was about to end, the alarm at headquarters suddenly sounded, and the atmosphere in the entire building suddenly became tense. John and Eric looked at each other and quickly connected the communicator.
"What's going on?" John asked in a deep voice.
An urgent report came over the communicator: "A hostage situation has occurred at a bank in the city center. The robbers are equipped with heavy firepower and have threatened the safety of the hostages. We are mobilizing support forces."
Eric turned to look at Lynn and said coldly, "It seems you have the opportunity to witness the operational capabilities of our New York headquarters today. However, you may only be able to observe this scene from the sidelines."
Lin En didn't respond, but nodded to show he understood. He quickly got into the car with the two men and rushed to the scene.
When they arrived outside the bank, the scene had been cordoned off by police and was surrounded by a crowd of onlookers. Lin En quickly noticed behind a window on the second floor of the bank, where a gunman was using a female hostage as a shield and shouting something excitedly.
John and Eric quickly handed over the situation to the commander on the scene, and the sniper was in position, but the situation was not optimistic. The sniper reported through the headset: "The target is well-protected, and the view from the window is blocked. I dare not shoot rashly."
Eric frowned, clearly dissatisfied with the situation. "In this situation, we must find a better angle. But time waits for no one, and the hostage's life could be in danger at any moment."
Lin En observed for a while and said in a deep voice, "Let me try."
John turned around with a hint of disdain on his face. "You? Detective, this isn't a simple case like the one we see in the Manhattan branch. This requires judgment down to the millisecond."
Lin En didn't argue with him, but walked straight to the sniper and took the other's sniper rifle. After adjusting the scope, he lay on the ground and calmly observed the situation in the window.
Eric frowned. "Are you sure you can do it? Even the best sniper at headquarters would need to double-check with this kind of vision."
Lynn didn't answer, his eyes sharpening, his finger lightly on the trigger. He held his breath, waiting for the perfect moment.
The gangster kept moving inside the window, but a moment later, half of his head was exposed when he raised the gun. At this moment, Lin En pulled the trigger without hesitation.
"boom!"
The bullet hit the target accurately, and the gangster fell to the ground, his weapon in his hand also falling to the ground. The hostage was quickly rescued by another team of special police. The whole process was clean and efficient, and the crowd at the scene cheered.
Lynn stood up, handed the gun back to the sniper, and then looked at John and Eric calmly: "It seems that I can do some practical work."
John opened his mouth, but was speechless for a moment. Eric looked at Lynn with a complicated expression. After a few seconds, he squeezed out a sentence: "Good marksmanship, Detective."
Lin En smiled calmly, his tone remaining calm. "We're a team. No matter which city we're in, we have only one responsibility: protecting innocent hostages. Tools and techniques are useless; action and judgment are what matter most."
At this moment, John and Eric finally realized Lynn's ability. They stood aside in silence while Lynn walked towards the newly rescued female hostage to confirm her safety.
After returning to headquarters, Eric's emotions were clearly mixed. He wasn't happy with Lynn stealing the show during such a critical moment. He felt that the Manhattan detective was just lucky, or perhaps just a sharpshooter, and wasn't necessarily comparable to a professional mutant detective like himself in other areas.
In the locker room, Eric changed into combat training clothes and walked up to Lin En, his smile containing a hint of provocation. "Inspector, your performance just now was indeed impressive. However, marksmanship is only a long-range skill after all. The detectives at our FBI headquarters focus more on all-around ability, especially close combat. I wonder if you'd be interested in a sparring match?"
Lin En changed his coat and hung it aside, smiling slightly: "Sparring? Of course. I'm also curious about how strong the close combat is in the New York headquarters."
Eric clapped his hands, signaling his colleagues to gather around and watch. He walked into the training ground, taking his stance, his tone clear with confidence. "Inspector, I'm a mutant, so be careful. I won't show any mercy."
Lin En calmly walked to the center of the field, stood still, and took a defensive stance. He said calmly, "Come on."
The onlookers all looked expectant. Most of them knew that Eric's ability was instantaneous acceleration over short distances, combined with extremely fast close-range attacks, making him nearly unbeatable. They felt that Lin En had little chance of winning and could only hold out for a few minutes at most.
"Begin!" Eric growled, and instantly took off, transforming into a shadow and rushing towards Lin En. His speed was so fast that it was blinding, and ordinary people could not react at all. (End of this chapter)
