Chapter 261 The tip of the iceberg
John nodded in agreement. "The Inspector is right. We need more intelligence to ensure the accuracy of our operations."
Lin En stood up, his eyes determined. "We'll first send a team to investigate and confirm whether this location is related to the 'mainline experiment,' while continuing to decrypt these records. Time is running out, but we must ensure that every step is effective."
Eric was silent for a moment, and finally nodded: "Okay, let's follow your plan."
Shortly after.
As the technician was concentrating on trying to decrypt the experimental data, the screen suddenly flashed and a string of red warning messages quickly popped up.
"Remote attack! They are trying to track our equipment!" The technician exclaimed and began to enter commands in a frantic attempt to prevent the intrusion.
Lin En immediately walked over to him, his eyes darkening. "Are they trying to destroy the data or track the location?"
"It's more like they're trying to track down our decryption equipment and destroy the storage module at the same time!" The technician's forehead was sweating as he worked quickly. "Their technical skills are very high. I need time to deal with them."
"We'll buy you some time," Lin En said calmly. He quickly pulled out his communicator and ordered the rest of the technical team, "All terminals immediately disconnect from the external network and block the internal network. Don't let them find a way in."
Eric walked over at this time, looking at the code constantly refreshing on the screen, with a hint of nervousness in his tone: "They have entered the peripheral system. If we don't stop them, the core data will be completely erased."
Lin En thought for a moment and said to the technician, "Direct the attack to a virtual node, disguised as the host location we are decrypting."
The technician nodded quickly and followed the instructions to create a fake data node in the system. A few seconds later, the source of the warning message began to shift, with some of the attack focused on this virtual node.
"We successfully launched part of the attack!" The technician breathed a sigh of relief, but then added, "But the other part of the attack is still focused on the core files of the storage module. They seem to have guessed that we were decrypting it."
Eric frowned. "Then we can't let them continue. Give me permission, and I'll directly block the exit channel of the storage module."
"We can't block it directly," Lin En said decisively. "If the storage module is completely disconnected, the other party may trigger a self-destruct sequence, and our data will be completely lost."
Eric glared at him: "So what's your plan?"
Lin En pondered for a moment and said quickly, "We will track their signal source backwards while using real-time backup to protect the integrity of the data. As long as we can confirm their location, we can strike back."
The technician immediately took action, establishing a backup channel and simultaneously initiating a reverse tracking program. Codes scrolled rapidly across the screen, and seconds later, a vague IP address appeared on the monitor.
"This is the source of their signal!" the technician said excitedly. "They're hiding very well, but we've tracked their approximate location. It's somewhere on the east coast."
Eric sneered, "We've found them. Now lock onto them and attack their system!"
"Don't worry," Lin En stopped him. "They have this kind of technology, so there can't be only one signal source. Their main control system must be hidden deeper. Keep tracking, and don't reveal that we've found their location."
The technician nodded and continued working, while Lynn stood by, always alert.
After a few minutes, the attack gradually weakened. Apparently realizing they couldn't completely destroy the data, they began to withdraw their signal. The screen returned to normal, and the technician breathed a sigh of relief: "The attack is temporarily over. The core data is intact."
Lin En nodded and looked at Eric. "We managed to keep the data this time, but they're clearly well aware of what we're doing. They'll be doubly vigilant with every next move."
Eric clenched his fists. "We can't just sit there and defend passively forever. Now that we've tracked down their general location, we have to be one step ahead of them."
Lin En's eyes were firm. "That's right. But we need more detailed intelligence. This decryption proves we're on the right track. Now it's just a matter of time."
Time passes gradually.
The technician continued to decrypt the experimental data, and more fragments of information gradually appeared on the screen. In one of the encrypted files, a name appeared: William Coleman.
Lynn stood behind the technician, his eyes fixed. "William Coleman... that name sounds familiar. Who is he?"
The technician quickly searched the internal database and pulled up Coleman's file. The screen displayed a photo of a middle-aged man with a long resume and notes.
"William Coleman," the technician explained, "is a leading bioengineer specializing in gene editing technology. He has served as a senior researcher at several international research institutions and has published numerous papers on gene manipulation. But five years ago, he suddenly disappeared from the public eye, reportedly due to an ethical controversy."
Eric flipped through the files and said coldly, "I remember this guy. He was kicked out of the industry for trying to break the ethical boundaries of genetics. He was even involved in several undisclosed illegal experiments."
"And then?" Lynn asked.
The technician continued, "According to intelligence, he disappeared after his research was suspended. But now it seems he may have secretly joined this 'Enhanced Mutant Project' and become a core figure."
John leaned against the table, his brow furrowed. "That explains why these experimental data are so complex and advanced. Only a genius like Coleman could have designed this kind of technology."
"More importantly," Lynn added, "Coleman's disappearance was clearly planned. He may have been recruited by this organization long ago and was responsible for promoting the implementation of the entire project."
The technician nodded. "The decrypted data also mentioned that his most recent location was likely a private laboratory on the East Coast."
Eric looked at Lynn, his tone full of tension: "If we can catch Coleman, we can find the core clues of the entire project."
Lin En pondered for a moment and said, "But he is no ordinary target. His background and intelligence mean that he must have an escape plan and a backup plan. We must plan our operation carefully."
The technician uploaded Coleman's possible whereabouts into the combat system and marked several suspected locations. "These places are all near the East Coast. The most likely one is an abandoned scientific research facility. We can start from there."
Eric nodded: "Okay, then we will prepare for the raid immediately."
Lin En raised his hand to signal for a moment of calm. "No rush. The enemy's defense system is very tight, especially for key figures like Coleman. We need to send a reconnaissance team to confirm the intelligence and make sure they haven't set any traps." Eric frowned reluctantly, but nodded in agreement. "Okay, but we have to act quickly. Every minute of delay means they might move."
Lin En looked at the photo of Coleman on the screen with sharp eyes: "Whatever his plan is, he won't have a chance to escape this time."
Lynn split up from the headquarters team. With an assistant, he returned to downtown New York City to investigate William Coleman's background. By reviewing extensive archives and interviewing insiders, he gradually pieced together Coleman's movements since his disappearance.
Initially, Coleman's reputation within the industry plummeted due to numerous ethical controversies. His cutting-edge gene editing technology, despite its unconventional nature, was met with widespread boycott due to his experiments. However, these bans did not seem to deter Coleman. Lynn learned through an informant familiar with the underground market that Coleman had become active in the black market gene trade since his disappearance.
"Coleman worked with multiple black market intermediaries under false names," the informant said, handing Lin a handwritten list of vague transaction locations. "He provided specialized genetic modification technology, and his clients included wealthy individuals, mercenary organizations, and even some small countries."
Lin En looked at the list, his eyes slightly cold. "These customers are willing to take huge risks to purchase this technology. Coleman must have given them an offer they couldn't refuse. Do you have any direct contact information for him?"
The informant shook his head. "He's very cautious and never shows up in person, but he has several key contacts. One of them is James Callahan, a New York business tycoon. He's a well-known broker in the black market."
After noting the name, Lynn continued to track Callahan's activities. Through bank transfer records and business transaction analysis, he discovered that Callahan had recently made large transactions with several genetic research companies, even involving the purchase of large quantities of experimental equipment.
"The types of equipment here match the experimental equipment we seized," Lynn told his assistant. "Callahan is likely one of Coleman's funding sources and may even be involved in the project's operations."
Lynn then began investigating Callahan's social circle and discovered that he had close ties with several business people. These people were all wealthy entrepreneurs, but they all had one thing in common - they had invested in multiple biotechnology companies, some of which were suspected of being involved in illegal genetic experiments.
"These people aren't just investors," Lynn analyzed. "They're probably the funders of the entire experimental project. Coleman needs a lot of money and equipment to advance his experiments, and these people are providing everything."
The assistant asked, "Should we investigate Callahan directly?"
Lynn shook his head. "He won't talk easily. We need more evidence. Continue to monitor his transactions and communications to see if we can find any records of his direct contact with Coleman."
At the same time, Lin En reported the results of the investigation to headquarters. Eric frowned after hearing this: "This means that our enemy is not just a mad scientist, but a group of capitalists who use their wealth and resources to promote dangerous experiments."
"That's right." Lynn's tone was calm but firm. "This isn't just a scientific experiment; it's an organized, planned conspiracy. Our goal isn't just to capture Coleman, but to uproot the entire network."
The headquarters quickly integrated the intelligence and began to formulate the next action plan.
The next day, Lynn led the team to another suspicious stronghold in the suburbs of New York. It was an abandoned warehouse that looked peaceful on the outside, but the messy traces around it and the occasional low noises made people shudder.
"Everyone be careful." Lynn reminded the team members in a low voice and raised his hand to signal them to disperse.
Upon entering the warehouse, a pungent odor immediately hit me, like a mixture of chemicals and blood. Broken equipment and pipes were scattered on the ground, and some areas were even charred, as if a violent explosion had occurred.
"Inspector, there's blood here." A team member pointed to a large dark red stain in the corner and followed the trace, which extended deep into the warehouse.
Lin En gripped his weapon tightly and took the lead, carefully approaching. Soon, they found a shocking sight at the other end of the warehouse - a mutant curled up on the ground, his whole body emitting a faint light, and his skin was covered with irregular cracks, as if it would collapse at any time.
"Oh my God..." a team member whispered, "What happened to him?"
The mutant was obviously in extreme pain, growling constantly and twitching. The metal objects around him were attracted by the unstable magnetic field around him and were suspended in the air, which could turn into deadly weapons at any time.
"He's a victim of an experiment," Lin En said in a deep voice, a trace of sadness in his eyes. "The failure of the genetic modification caused his abilities to go out of control. He may not even be able to control his own consciousness."
At that moment, the mutant suddenly raised his head, his eyes glowing strangely, and rushed towards Lin En and the others. His power exploded, and the metal fragments in the warehouse shot out in all directions like a storm.
"Take cover!" Lynn shouted loudly, while nimbly dodging a flying piece of iron, raising his gun and aiming at the mutant, but not immediately firing.
"Don't kill him!" Lynn shouted to the team members, "He is a victim, not an enemy!"
Eric also rushed to the scene. Seeing this scene, he frowned and said, "He is completely irrational now. He must be subdued immediately, otherwise he will cause greater harm."
Lynn nodded, agreeing to a non-lethal approach. He directed his team to disperse, using surrounding obstacles and tools to shield themselves, and attempt to approach the mutant. At the same time, he quickly retrieved the specially designed suppressor handcuffs, equipment specifically designed to control mutant abilities.
After a chaotic chase, Lynn found the right moment, pounced on the mutant, and buckled the suppressor handcuffs on his wrists. As the suppressor was activated, the mutant's ability gradually subsided, and his body went limp, falling heavily to the ground, gasping for breath, his eyes full of pain.
"Call the medical team quickly." Lynn said to the team members, while squatting down to check the condition of the mutants.
"How much longer can he hold out?" Eric asked.
"The situation is terrible." Lin En shook his head. "The side effects of genetic modification are destroying his body. He needs professional medical treatment and isolation."
The mutant raised his head weakly and murmured, "Save...save me...they...will continue..."
Lynn shook his hand and said firmly, "We will stop them. This won't happen to anyone else again."
The medical team arrived quickly, carrying the mutant onto a stretcher and sending him to the medical center at headquarters. Lynn looked at everything in the warehouse with a heavy heart. He knew that the scene before him was just the tip of the iceberg, and the truth hidden behind it might be even more cruel.
Eric walked up to him and whispered, "What you see are their failed works. And those that succeeded may be more dangerous than this."
Lin En nodded, his eyes stern: "Because of this, we must find Coleman as soon as possible and put an end to this experiment once and for all."
Late at night, Lin En arrived at the black market, an underground trading area hidden in the shadows of the city. The lights were dim, and the air was filled with the smell of dampness and tobacco. The crowd was a mixed bag, with all kinds of whispered conversations and transactions taking place quietly. No one even glanced at strangers. (End of this chapter)
