Chapter 278: Evacuate Immediately
Mark and his team followed Lynn toward the room without hesitation. Using a laser cutter, they successfully opened the door. The room's layout differed from the others. The walls were covered with scientific research data, records of human modification experiments, and specimens. Several computers sat on the tables, their screens displaying real-time experimental data.
"These are their experimental records." Mark walked to the table and quickly scanned the contents on the screen. "Here are detailed gene editing data and even records of the effectiveness of 'enhanced humans.'"
Lynn took a deep breath, realizing that this data might reveal the true nature of the entire experimental plan. But at the same time, his unease grew stronger. Were Alan's parents trapped here? Were their experimental records hidden in these files?
He eagerly began rummaging through the files. In a lab report marked "Completed," he finally found a crucial clue: the names of Allen's parents. It turned out they weren't just experimental subjects; they played crucial roles in the project. The documents revealed that Allen's mother, Katherine, had participated in the initial genetic experiments, while George was a key financial backer.
"Catherine and George...they've been here the whole time." Lin En's voice was low, and the documents in his hand were almost crushed by him. "We must find them."
Mark came over after hearing the noise and looked at the document in Lin's hand. "Why are they here? The experimental records say they are involved in the 'enhanced human' project?"
"This isn't just a genetic experiment, Mark." Lynn's voice gradually grew heavier. "This is more like a manipulation of their life and death. Catherine and George became part of the Daedalus experiment and were forced to become the core of this plan."
They immediately began searching for more clues about Allen's parents. After a thorough search, they finally found a special storage room deep within the laboratory. Entering, Lynn saw dozens of massive cryostat chambers, each containing a different experimental specimen. Shockingly, two of the chambers bore name tags clearly bearing the names of Katherine Miller and George Miller.
Lynn felt a surreal jolt, the heaviness in his heart growing even heavier. He clenched his fists, anger welling up in him. "We finally found them... but they're still in the lab, unable to wake up."
"Lynn, these experimental specimens... these people..." Mark's tone also became sad, "They were forced to participate in these horrific experiments."
Lin En took a deep breath and forced himself to calm down: "We must take them back. We can't let them stay here any longer."
However, just as they were about to rescue Catherine and George from the cryostat, an emergency alarm sounded in the base, red warning lights began flashing, and the surrounding protection systems began to activate. The experimental organization's counterattack had finally arrived.
"We have to evacuate quickly!" Lin En knew that time was running out and they had to leave before the base was completely blocked.
The team quickly took action. According to the pre-arranged evacuation plan, everyone began to rescue Catherine and George from the cryostat and take them out of the laboratory. At the same time, Lynn and Mark cooperated with the cover team's retreat, doing their utmost to protect the safety of the evacuation route.
Just as they were about to evacuate, the security line in the base was fully activated, and several fully armed security personnel surrounded them from different directions.
"We must hold on!" Lin En gritted his teeth and said, "Everyone, maintain your formation and don't let them interfere with the evacuation."
After a fierce exchange of fire, they finally broke through the outer defenses and successfully rescued Catherine and George, bringing them to safety. Although they had successfully rescued these important experimental subjects, Lin En still couldn't calm down. He knew that he had not completed his true mission - the secrets of the "Daedalus" base had not been fully revealed, and the experimental organization's evil conspiracy was far from over.
"Lynn, mission accomplished." Mark panted beside Lynn, "We rescued Catherine and George."
Lin En nodded silently, looking at the successfully rescued Catherine and George, his heart filled with mixed emotions. He knew that although they had successfully rescued some people, the real battle had just begun. Their mission was not over, and the real mastermind still lurked in the darkness, waiting for the next strike.
"We will continue," Lynn said with a determined look, "until the entire Daedalus Project is destroyed and every victim gets justice."
Lynn and Mark successfully brought Catherine and George back from the Daedalus experimental base, but despite the initial success, the burden on their hearts has not been lifted. The remnants of the experimental organization still exist, and are even larger and more secretive than they imagined.
After the rescue operation at the base was completed, Lynn and Mark did not immediately relax, but instead stepped up their efforts to track and eliminate all of the experimental organization's networks. Analyzing the data they brought back from the base, they discovered that the experimental organization was not conducting research and experiments in a single location, but rather operating simultaneously in multiple locations, relying on a global underground network to operate covertly.
The technical department further deciphered the data and discovered some important clues: the experimental organization maintained low-key activities in multiple locations, and one place caught Lin En's special attention - an abandoned factory in a remote town. This town seemed far away from all mainstream urban activities, but because of the existence of this factory, it became a new testing ground for the experimental organization.
"These guys are so cunning." Lin En stared at the computer screen and frowned. "They moved the experiment to a place like this. Almost no one pays attention to these small cities."
Mark walked over to Lynn's desk and whispered, "If this city is really the center of their activities, it means they are still planning something behind the scenes. We can't let go of these clues, Lynn."
Lin En nodded, his eyes firm: "We have to go and take a look. It's hidden too deep here. If we don't investigate thoroughly, we will never find their roots."
Immediately, Lin and Mark led a crack team to the remote town to investigate. They knew this operation was risky, as the enemy might have already noticed their presence and were preparing for a counterattack. Despite this, Lin decided to lead the team anyway.
The journey was long and lonely. As Lin's convoy advanced through the wilderness, the scenery grew increasingly desolate, gradually retreating from the bustling city. The mountains and woodlands grew denser, and a heavy silence filled the air. Lin stared out the window, his worry for Kate rising in his heart. This ongoing struggle had deeply intruded upon his life, and Kate remained a part of his heart that he could not ignore.
"What's wrong with you?" Mark asked softly from the seat next to him, his eyes fixed on the road in front of the car. "You look a little distracted." Lynn came back to her senses and smiled. "Just thinking about something. I'm a little worried about Kate's situation."
Mark was silent for a moment, his eyes remaining focused. "She won't sit idly by, Lynn. You know her character. You can't stop her. The most important thing now is that we can find more clues about the experimental organization and solve the problem as soon as possible."
Lin En nodded, took a deep breath, and looked up at the front of the car. Although he was still worried, he knew that he could only focus on the task at hand.
Several hours later, the convoy finally arrived at the remote town. It was completely different from the metropolis Lin En was from. The streets were narrow and the buildings were ancient, as if time had stood still for decades. The streets were sparsely populated, with only the occasional old car passing by and a few shops quietly operating. The air was filled with a quiet and lonely atmosphere.
"It looks like there's nothing special here." Mark looked around, "But we know that people from the experimental organization might be nearby."
Lin En nodded. "Let's split up and investigate the background of this city and the situation of this factory. I'll ask someone to inquire about the factory. Mark, you will be responsible for scouting the nearby streets to ensure that your whereabouts are not exposed."
The two split up and began searching for clues in this unknown city. Through local contacts, Lin En soon learned about the abandoned factory. The factory had ceased production several years ago, and the entire factory area looked deserted for a long time, but in reality, few dared to approach it. Locals knew that the area was owned by a mysterious company. Although no one knew what the company was doing, many rumored that the factory was once a storage facility for munitions and chemicals. As for now, it remains a nearly completely sealed place.
"It sounds like there's something fishy going on here." After Lin and Mark reunited, they briefly briefed the team on the situation. "What we need to do now is to find a way into the factory, whether it's direct or covert. We don't have time to waste."
They regrouped and entered the factory area. The surroundings were desolate, with few other vehicles in sight. Lin and his team carefully advanced along the factory wall, trying to find an entrance they could sneak into.
"We have to be careful and not attract anyone's attention." Lynn whispered commands, and the team members moved silently behind him.
The only way into the factory was through a derelict gate, the lock of which had been easily broken. Once inside, Lin En encountered a dark area, dimly flickering only from a few lights within the factory. The factory's interior was a maze of abandoned machinery and iron structures, and the air was thick with the smell of oil smoke and decay.
"It looks like this place has been abandoned for a long time." Mark whispered, "But there's still something wrong."
Lin En nodded, his eyes still alert. "We have to be careful. The enemy may be active in this area. Keep in touch. If there is any abnormality, evacuate immediately."
As they continued their investigation, deeper into the factory, they suddenly heard a faint sound—like the rubbing of metal. Lynn quickly signaled for silence, and the team quietly approached the source of the sound, discovering a hidden door leading to the basement.
"Here." Lynn whispered, "Let's go take a look."
They opened the basement door and discovered that the situation inside was even more complicated than they had imagined. The basement was filled with various experimental equipment and materials, and the walls were covered with documents and research data. Lin En found a familiar name in one of the documents - the code name "Project Epsilon".
"They're not just doing genetic experiments." Mark looked at the records on the wall, frowning. "These devices are probably used for human enhancement experiments. The 'Epsilon Project' is exactly the same as the experimental records we've seen before."
Lin En's heart suddenly tightened. He realized that the enemy they faced was far beyond their initial expectations. The experimental organization was not only conducting gene editing, but also conducting even more dangerous biological transformations. They were trying to create a "super soldier," not only strengthening the subject physically, but also comprehensively improving their mental and reaction speed.
"We have to take these records back and find out more of the truth." Lin En directed his team to collect evidence while thinking about the next step. He knew that this was not just a simple raid. The struggle had become more complicated, and the interests and hazards involved were more far-reaching.
Suddenly, the lights in the basement flickered a few times, and then the alarm system of the entire factory sounded. Lin En's face instantly became serious and his heartbeat accelerated.
"Hurry! We have to evacuate immediately!" Lin En ordered loudly.
Following his orders, the team quickly packed up the data and evidence they had brought back and began rushing towards the basement exit. Although they had long anticipated a response from the experimental organization, the emergency alarm at this moment meant that their actions had been exposed and the enemy was likely already gathering forces to prepare for a counterattack.
Lin En's heartbeat quickened, and he quickly glanced around: "Mark, lead the team to evacuate, I and the others will cover you."
Mark nodded and immediately led the team forward. Lin En, on the other hand, headed for the exit, his gun tightly gripped in his hand, his eyes alertly watching the surroundings. He knew that at this moment, the situation they faced had become extremely dangerous.
Just as they were about to reach the basement exit, they heard hurried footsteps coming from the stairs. Lin's heartbeat instantly accelerated, and he immediately signaled the team members to stop, crouching in the corner and holding his breath.
"Someone is coming." Lin En whispered, "Get ready, we will fight back later."
A few seconds later, security personnel appeared at the stairwell, armed and wearing black tactical uniforms. Their eyes were stern, and they seemed to be a special unit responsible for emergency response. Lin En observed calmly, seeing that they were few in number and probably not enough to pose a fatal threat. However, time was running out, and a quick victory was necessary. (End of this chapter)
