Chapter 20 The Way of Blood
"Fire arrows!"

Following Kenneth's order, the soldiers of King Greg's army shot dense arrows, which swept through the orcs and wargs in the front like a torrential rain, stringing them together like hedgehogs.

It's just that this hedgehog lies on the ground motionless and is very quiet.

"What have you discovered? You didn't even find such a big fortress. Are you blind?" Captain Oak grabbed the scout from the daytime, grabbed his neck with his rough and dirty hands, lifted him up, and roared angrily.

The Oak Scout's pupils shrank into a dot in panic, his body trembling but he dared not resist. He could only utter a few syllables with difficulty: "I, I don't know."

"Get out!" Captain Oak threw the scout to the ground, and the surrounding wolves immediately opened their bloody mouths and rushed forward impatiently.

After a while, the sound of flesh and bones being chewed could be heard.

Captain Oak looked at the sturdy Hyde Fortress angrily and found that it was even equipped with more lethal crossbows, and the number of people was far more than he had imagined.

To capture this fortress, ladders and battering rams were necessary. However, how could they, who had barely slipped through the defenses of the elven and human kingdoms, carry such bulky equipment to such a distant western land as Minchirias?

Captain Oak looked at the ridiculous iron knife in his hand, then at the solid city wall.

This fortress cannot be broken through with the equipment they currently have.

Captain Orc felt a pent-up resentment in his heart as he watched the Orcs and Wargs who had been charging the city walls under his orders but were killed by a hail of arrows.

Cunning and hateful human wizard! Captain Oak wanted to cut off the other's head and crush it with his feet.

But if he retreated now, not only would he be looked down upon by other Oak captains who had surrendered by force, but he would also lack the courage to face the real Oak boss above him.

So he roared, "Don't worry about that fortress anymore, idiot! Destroy all the buildings outside the fortress. That human wizard must pay the price!"

When Captain Oak came, he saw a small inn and an outpost guarded by only a few humans.

But it was precisely because Captain Oak wanted to attack the golden tree directly that he ignored these two buildings.

"Ooo ...

Upon hearing the captain's order, the Orcs immediately abandoned their charge towards Hyde Fortress.

They had already realized that the small broken knives in their hands could not cause any damage to the fortress, so they turned around and ran away the moment Captain Oak gave the order.

After all, it is easier to destroy those post stations and outposts that are almost unguarded than to charge towards the fortress with a risk of death.

"After destroying it, surround the fortress. I want to see what other abilities that human wizard has that would allow him to stay in the fortress without coming out! Humans always need to eat and drink!" Captain Oak bared his teeth at the fortress, his crowded facial features twitching with anger.

Kenneth Hyde, who had been standing on the edge of the battlements observing the situation, breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the Orcs give up attacking Hyde Fortress.

Then he smiled at the three dwarves, Fili, Kili, and Dwalin, who were standing on a wooden box nearby and still shooting arrows at the Orcs who had not retreated in time, and thanked them politely: "Thank you very much for your help. The rest will be left to His Majesty Tanes and Lady Neferi Lu."

Kili merely nodded in response and continued shooting arrows at the orcs below.

Fili and Dwalin, who were relatively poor archers, stopped what they were doing. Fili, representing Crown Prince Durin, jumped down from the wooden box and said to Kenneth Hyde with a smile, "This opportunity to slaughter orcs without any threat to your life is rare. I should thank you, Mr. Hyde."

Then he asked worriedly, "Mr. Tanes is outside, is he okay? I think we can rush out to pick them up after the orcs retreat."

Kenneth Hyde smiled and said, "Thank you for your kindness, but please trust His Majesty Tanes. Furthermore, Lady Neferi Lu is guarding him. We should be more worried about a few orcs escaping tonight."

Dwalin said, "I have seen Mr. Tanes's strength, but whether or not to help him has nothing to do with his strength. As I said, we dwarves will not sit back in the fortress and watch our friends fight outside. Mr. Hyde, Fili and I agree. When you hear the sound of fighting from Mr. Tanes's side, send Fili and me down from the wall."

Qili then turned around and said, "And me."

Kenneth Hyde raised his hand and pinched his golden beard. He looked at the dwarves with expressions that said, "I'm going to go out and help no matter what you say." Finally, he smiled helplessly and nodded: "Okay, I will send two soldiers to go with you to support Mr. Tanes."

As a result, Hyde Fortress still had a group of demihumans controlling crossbows and four soldiers from King Grek's army, and the number of fortress defenders could not be reduced in any way.

After all, Kenneth Hyde didn't know whether Oak was pretending to retreat, so he had to keep enough manpower.

The purpose of sending out four soldiers was to protect the three dwarf friends of His Majesty Tanes at any time so that they could retreat safely in a critical moment.

The Orcs were actually unaware that most of the arrows that had just been fired at them from the battlements were groups of demi-humans following the orders of Kenneth Hyde.

If the Orc Captain had not been so blinded by rage, he would have noticed that although the rain of arrows was very great, the only Orcs and Wargs killed were those who rushed too far forward at the beginning and were ambushed.

After realizing that there were people in the fortress, the losses of the Orcs were not as great as Captain Oak had imagined.

Most of the arrows shot by the demihumans did not cause fatal injuries. Instead, the soldiers of King Greg's army who remained in the fortress and Fili and his men who came to help caused more casualties with fewer people.

And where did the knight commander and the other soldiers go?
The answer is that he was arranged by Tanes in the outpost and ambushed in the watchtower together with the King Greg's army that was already in the outpost.

Tanes and Neferi Lu agreed with each other. After learning about the habits of the Orcs through Fili and the others, they determined that if they could not capture Hyde Fortress in a short time, they would turn their attention back to the inns and outposts outside the fortress.

That's why Tanes placed the Knight Commander and some soldiers from Hyde Fortress here. He didn't want this outpost to be destroyed by the Orcs.

The same goes for post stations.

However, the inn itself was not very big, and Teacher Seren was there, so Tanes was not worried about any accidents happening at the inn.

Furthermore, in order to ensure that nothing unexpected happened to Teacher Seren, Tanes asked Roger and two pumpkin-headed soldiers to guard the spacious room outside Seren's basement.

Why are there two pumpkin-headed soldiers, one from Hyde Fortress and the other one was outside Seren's door at the border.

Tanes was in the darkened watchtower, looking at the Knight Commander of Hyde Fortress who was lying in ambush beside him.

The knight commander who had fallen into the path of blood began to feel agitated when he heard the screams of orcs and wargs pierced by arrows coming from the distant Hyde Fortress.

The whites of his eyes gradually became bloodshot, and his hands restlessly grasped the cold hilt of the knight's sword.

Tanes reached out and pressed hard on the Knight Commander's heavy shoulder armor. "Be patient. There will be enough orcs for you to enjoy the slaughter. I will not stop you."

After hearing Tanes' words, the Knight Commander calmed down a little.

Then Tanes took out a blood-red knight's medal from his space backpack. The medal seemed to be stained with blood, and there was Mung's trident curse spear symbol engraved on it.

Upon seeing the Knight Commander's medal, his breathing quickened, revealing an unusual eagerness. He noticed the Knight Commander's situation and smiled, "It seems you recognize this [Pureblood Knight's Medal]? That makes things easier. You should know how difficult it is to obtain, right?"

The Knight Commander nodded quickly.

Tanes tossed the medal a few times, and the Knight Commander's eyes followed the medal's traces in the air.

Tanes finally caught the medal, took it back, and said sternly: "If you want this medal, you must not be like a beast and cannot suppress your inner desire to kill. Otherwise, what is the difference between you and those orcs out there?"

The Knight Commander was silent for a few seconds, then said in a low voice, "I understand."

Tanes nodded in satisfaction. "When the time is right, I will personally award you the medal. Now, you only need to obey my orders."

"Yes, sir." The Knight Commander spoke again in a low voice.

Tanes looked at him and shook his head slightly.

He knew that the real object of submission of this Knight Commander who had fallen into the Path of Blood was not him, but the Great Rune power belonging to Monger in his body.

But it doesn't matter. There is no substantial difference between submitting to Mung and submitting to yourself.

But the Knight Commander's submission to him also indirectly indicated one thing: those blood-crazy Blood Fingers under Mung's command might also obey his orders because of Mung's Great Rune.

Although this group of faded ones who have fallen into the path of blood are very dangerous, if they can really listen to me, they will be a very strong fighting force.

Tanes had even figured out what to do with the Blood Fingers: Aren't those Orcs annoying to kill? Then let these bloodthirsty Blood Fingers go hunting them down.

Since the Blood Fingers are bloodthirsty, the Orcs, a disgusting race that can never be completely killed, are just there to satisfy their desires.

There is a saying that goes, "Every evildoer will be punished by another evildoer."

Of course, Tanes is not sure whether all the Blood Fingers are like the Knight Commander and will obey him because of Mung's Great Rune. He still needs to verify this issue.

But now, we still have to deal with the orcs that have arrived.

Tanes could hear the strange cries of the Orcs and the deep growls of the Wargs as they broke into the outpost.

"Destroy those watchtowers and tents! If you find any humans hiding inside, tear them apart!" Captain Oak's order came.

Tanes patted the shoulder of the Knight Commander, who was about to lose his patience, and signaled that he no longer needed to suppress his desire to kill and could start slaughtering the Orcs to his heart's content.

A red light flashed in the Knight Commander's eyes. He drew the greatsword from behind him and then kicked open the door of the watchtower.

The iron door opened with a bang, hitting the nose of a warg that was approaching cautiously after smelling the human scent, making it scream in surprise.

The pupils of Orc, who was sitting on the back of the wolf, dilated instantly. Before the scene inside the door came into his sight, the red light of blood flooded his vision like a tide.

It was a piercing crimson, as if countless drops of blood had instantly coalesced, transforming into a bloody mist that filled the entire world. Its vision began to blur, and its consciousness seemed to be dragged mercilessly by a giant hand of darkness, sinking into a bottomless abyss.

The screams of the surrounding Orcs, who witnessed this sudden and bloody scene, mingled with the howls of terrified wolves.

The body of the Orc, and his wolf, cut in two, lay a bloody mess before the door.

The bodies of the other Orcs around them involuntarily retreated, and their feet made a panicked sound as they stepped over the scattered stones in the chaos.

The smell of blood filled the air.

Even Captain Oak was frightened by the bloody scene, but just as he was about to roar, he was interrupted by the sudden sound of footsteps.

"Da da……"

The footsteps were not loud in the noisy environment, but every step of the iron boots was like a heavy hammer hitting Oak's heart, and the echo lingered in his mind.

The Knight Commander slowly stepped out of the watchtower, his movements steady and slow.

He held the knight's greatsword, which was stained with the black blood and internal organs of the orcs, in both hands and swung it lightly. The filthy things fluttered on the solid ground like fallen autumn leaves, leaving a string of deep bloodstains.

"I said, tear him to pieces! He's just a human knight, what are you idiots afraid of!" Captain Oak suppressed the uneasiness in his heart and roared angrily.

Under the captain's orders and pressure, Oak, who was closest to the Knight Commander, raised his axe and knife, which were less than half the length of the knight's sword, and rushed forward.

But what the Orcs didn't expect was that the Knight Commander rushed forward at a faster speed, no, crashed into the crowd of Orcs with an almost crazy determination.

"Raise my sword high, blood—flows!"

Amidst the rising dust, the Knight Commander's roar, like the roar of a wild beast, shattered the hushed atmosphere of the battlefield. His greatsword slashed bloody blows one after another, and blood shone brightly to the astonishment of the Orcs.

Just as the Knight Commander attracted the attention of most of the Orcs, the soldiers of King Greg's army hiding in other watchtowers began to show their heads above the watchtowers.

There were two soldiers standing on each watchtower. They raised the crossbows that had already been strung and pulled the triggers.

"call out--!"

There was the familiar sound of arrows breaking through the air, for only moments before the Orcs had heard arrows making this sound killing their own people beneath the fortress.

The soldiers of King Greg's army took turns firing, their accuracy countless times higher than that of the demihumans in Hyde Fortress who could barely draw their bows. Captain Oak lost about twenty of his men in the first round of shooting alone.

A wolf that was lucky enough not to be hit by an arrow was aroused by the pain of the wound. It roared at the soldiers who were shooting crossbows on the watchtower, and then rushed to the door below the watchtower.

The next moment, the door of the watchtower also opened outwards on its own initiative, and the cold and sharp broad-headed spear faced the injured wolf and penetrated deeply into the opponent's head.

A knight dressed in the same manner as the Knight Commander who had fallen into the Path of Blood walked out of the watchtower, carrying a large golden shield and a spear.

He first glanced coldly at the Knight Commander, then snorted coldly and raised his spear, pointing it at the Orcs caught in the chaos. He shouted loudly to the four soldiers who had been lying in ambush behind him, "Don't let that evil knight steal our first victory in front of His Majesty Tanes."
