Chapter 74 Stubborn Thorin
Chapter 74 Stubborn Thorin
When Tanes and the others returned to David's farmhouse, Thorin and the others had already packed their things and were ready to set off.
On the farmhouse lawn, now bathed in the early morning light, the dwarves wandered at random, their shadows lengthening in the dawn's twilight.
The air was thick with boredom, mingling with the scent of fresh grass.
The dwarves either tickled the lazy sheep in the sheepfold or poked the white-feathered chickens in the chicken coop as they stretched their necks to look for food.
They yawned or burped, and as the dwarves had brief conversations, Thorin looked in the direction where Gandalf and the others had left last night.
Of course, the only one who actually burped was Bombur, the fat dwarf.
The sound of his burps was like a wisp of smoke suddenly rising from a hill, unique and with a hint of satisfaction.
This was because Thorin had asked David to prepare breakfast for Tanes and the others in the morning, but Tanes and the others still hadn't shown up until the breakfast was cold.
Bombur adhered to the principle of not wasting any grain of food. He decided to sacrifice his stomach and ate all the breakfast for six people including Tanes under the shocked gaze of the other dwarves.
"Sometimes I'm afraid your belly will explode, Bombur," said Bofur, looking at his brother's round belly.
Bombur was sitting on the ground rubbing his bloated belly because he had eaten too much. He smiled innocently when he heard what Bofur said.
Thorin heard the conversation between the two dwarves and smiled silently.
Then he raised his head to look at the sun hanging high in the sky, his expression changed back to that of a majestic dwarf leader, and he said loudly: "Wait for the last half hour. If Tanes and the others still don't show up, we will set off and wait for them in the village ahead."
At this moment, the sharp-eyed Dwalin saw the shadowy figures of Tanis and his men approaching, and shouted to Thorin, "I see someone coming, Thorin. I wonder if it's Tanis and Fili."
Balin narrowed his eyes and smiled: "My eyes tell me that it is Filikili and your friends coming, Thorin."
Thorin nodded, and soon enough, Tanes and his companions appeared in everyone's sight, leading the horses that had been abducted by the trolls.
Tanes and the others walked over, and Fili and Kili excitedly greeted them.
The two dwarf brothers each carried a jar of gold coins they had taken out of the troll cave, and they reported their battle results to Thorin one by one.
Thorin's heart finally settled down when he saw that Fili and Kili were not injured.
He listened silently to Fili and Kili's descriptions of the thrilling battle with the trolls, and only spoke after they stopped talking: "But you can't carry these jars of gold with you forever."
Qili weighed his arms and said, "That's easy. Fili and I plan to dig a pit nearby and bury these cans in it. We can take them out when we pass by here again on our way back from Lonely Mountain."
Philip also nodded. They had both thought about the problem of carrying the gold coin jar on the way.
Thorin said, "It's good that you have considered it, but remember that these gold coin jars were found by the six of you. When you come back to dig them up, you can only take your share."
Kili nodded vigorously. "Of course I understand. Fili and I will only take what is ours."
Thorin patted both of them on the shoulders and said, "Go inside and see if you left anything behind. Let's get ready to go."
While Thorin was talking to Fili and Kili, Gandalf looked in surprise at David, the farmer, who was also getting ready to set off.
Oin, Gloin, Nori, Dori and Ori, the five dwarves in the chicken coop, nimbly helped David catch the white-feathered chickens in the chicken coop and put them on the carriage.
David himself drove the docile sheep out of the fold, and when he heard what Gandalf said he said, "I intend to go with you, Gandalf."
He glanced in the direction Gandalf and the others had come from, or more accurately, the direction the trolls had disappeared from, and said, "I've lived here for so many years, and I've been here every winter. But this year is different. The appearance of those trolls makes me feel very unsafe. I'm afraid that after you leave, what if new 'trolls' come? I plan to go to the village where my wife and children are, and stay there for a while."
After hearing what David said, Gandalf smiled and nodded. "Well, there's nothing wrong with you doing this. We have more people than you and can help you watch over the animals on the road."
David looked at the dwarves around him and said thankfully, "Although these dwarves are a bit careless and unconcerned about details, they do help a lot in driving these livestock. If I were alone, I would probably just hide in the house and pray that the ogres wouldn't come in."
Amid the songs and stories of the dwarves, the Lonely Mountain Expedition set out again.
Less than a day after Tanes and Thorin and his party left David's farmhouse, two sturdy wolves rushed out of the valley.
On the back of the warg were the two orcs outside Bree. One of them directly controlled the warg to cross the fence of the farmhouse and saw the stone-turned ogre corpse inside the farmhouse and the messy traces on the ground.
The wolf under its crotch twitched its nose, raised its head and let out a creepy wolf howl.
"Ouch——!"
In reality it was communicating in the language of the wargs with the orcs that rode on its back.
The Orc leaped from the Warg and, with a few quick steps, came to the door of the farmhouse.
There was a chain hanging on the door, but he pulled out an extremely sharp machete from his waist and swung it at the wooden door.
Under the violent swing of Oak, the wooden door quickly shattered, and then Oak kicked the door open and walked in. When he came out, he was holding a few red beards and a piece of mud-stained rag in his hands, with a hideous smile on his face.
It threw the things left by the dwarves into the house, looked at its companions, and uttered the language of dark creatures: "Zidgar dorgil, Rhozd—buzh i gimanim! [Tell the master that the dwarven scum has been found!]"
The village David mentioned was three days' journey from his farmhouse. There were no other accidents along the way, and Tanes and his companions arrived smoothly at the village where David's wife and children lived.
When the villagers saw such a large and powerful team, they all looked at them with caution and curiosity.
But it was obvious that they all knew David. After seeing David in the team, the vigilance in the villagers' eyes quickly disappeared.
The curious villagers ran directly to the mud-brick house where David's wife and children lived, knocked on the door and told the people inside that David had come to the village with a large group of dwarves, two armored knights, and a wizard.
Obviously, the sophisticated armor on Tanes and Bernal made the villagers think they were nobles.
When David's wife heard the news, she was at a loss at first, but she quickly came to her senses. She asked her two sons to clean up the house, then washed her face and hands before running out to greet her husband with a nervous mood.
"David, why did you come back suddenly? Did something unexpected happen?" She saw that David had brought back the sheep and chickens he raised, and also noticed that the number of sheep was not right. She asked in surprise and worry.
David slowed the carriage slightly, picked up his wife, glanced at the villagers watching the excitement from both sides of the road, and whispered, "A monster has appeared in the deep valley. I'll tell you the details when we get home."
The wife nodded, then asked, "So, what's going on with those dwarves and the knight?"
She didn't ask about Gandalf because as David's wife she had met Gandalf a few times.
David explained briefly, "They are friends brought by Gandalf. If it weren't for them, I might not have made up my mind to come back."
The village was not big, with only a few dozen households, so Tanes and Thorin quickly arrived at David's home in the village.
David's two teenage sons look very much like him. When they saw their father coming, they shouted "Dad" happily.
David strode over, and the two children ran over and threw themselves into his arms. He hugged them tightly and stroked their hair with his calloused hands.
"Come, children, help drive the sheep back to the yard. We have guests coming." David said gently to his two sons after releasing the hug.
David's two sons were very obedient. They helped their father lead the docile sheep into the backyard of the house.
On the other side, the dwarves signaled to David's wife not to help, and they also brought the chicken coop containing the white-feathered chickens to the backyard and put it down.
The wife whispered to David, "I've never seen so many dwarves in my life, and they seem very friendly to us."
David said, "Maybe it's because I took them in for the night. Go prepare some delicious food, and I'll go to the market to buy a few barrels of wine. Don't worry, the dwarves will pay for it."
The wife was a little resistant at first, but after hearing David's last words, she smiled happily and went to the kitchen to light a fire and cook.
David finally had time to find Tanis, Gandalf and Thorin. There was also a kind-looking dwarf with a white beard sitting at the table. The four of them were discussing their future arrangements.
"Here is the reward for helping me get rid of the ogre, and I will also provide you with food and water when you leave as stated in the contract." David said as he placed a black coin on the low table where the three of them were sitting.
Thorin didn't do anything with the money bag, but looked at Tanes, because this was the reward for him and Bernal.
"Thank you for your promise, David. I'll help pass on Bernard's copy."
Tanes didn't try to be polite, but nodded to David, reached out and put the purse into his space backpack.
David widened his eyes slightly, and the money that suddenly disappeared from Tanes' hands made him realize that Tanes' identity was not simple.
It was another wizard?
David recalled how familiar Gandalf and Tanis were with each other, and could only assume that Tanis was also a wizard.
With this thought in mind, David left home and headed to the village market to buy a few barrels of ale.
After all, he had heard the dwarves talking about wanting to drink since last night.
After seeing David leave, Thorin looked back at Gandalf and asked, "Where are you taking us, Gandalf? We are getting closer and closer to the land of the elves."
Gandalf said with a smile: "You are right, Thorin. I am taking you to Rivendell to seek help from the Lord there, Elrond."
Then he looked at Tanes and smiled, "Besides, Lord Elrond is Tanes' friend. I believe he will not refuse our request for help."
Thorin's face turned gloomy, and he said in a low voice: "Elves? No, I would never go to the elves' territory even if I die, Gandalf. Not to mention asking me to ask the damn elves for help, I will not go near there!"
Gandalf showed a surprised expression. He did not expect Thorin to reject him so harshly.
Even Balin's originally kind expression seemed to be a little out of place.
Tanes even recalled the commotion caused by Fili and Kili when Elrond first came to his territory.
Gandalf asked in confusion, "Why not go there? The elves can provide us with food, shelter and advice."
Thorin refused without hesitation: "I don't need their advice. Who are the elves to advise me?"
Gandalf couldn't believe Thorin's answer and continued to persuade him, "We have a map, the one I gave you, which your father Thrain entrusted to me for safekeeping. There is a spell on it that hides some words that we have not yet deciphered. Lord Elrond can help us break the spell and decipher the words on the map."
"Help?" Thorin seemed to be touched by this word, and his voice began to contain anger.
"What did the elves do to help us when the dragon attacked Erebor?"
"The Orcs sacked Moria and desecrated our sanctuary, and the Elves watched and did nothing."
Thorin clenched his fists and looked at Gandalf, suppressing his anger. "Now, you want me to find the elves who betrayed my grandfather and my father?"
Gandalf showed a headache expression, and then became serious: "But you are not your grandfather and father, Thorin. I gave you the map and the key, not to let you cling to the past..."
Before Thorin could finish his words to Gandalf, he replied in a snarling tone, "I didn't know you had the map and key."
Gandalf's face also showed a rare expression of anger and incomprehension. Tanis said to smooth things over: "Thorin, Gandalf, both of you calm down. There is no need to quarrel over such things."
Thorin's chest rose and fell several times, and finally he nodded to Tanes: "You are right, Tanes, but I will not go to Rivendell, and I will never ask the elves for help."
In the movie, Thorin and his companions were already discovered, so the Orcs quickly caught up with them. Gandalf, while being chased by the Orcs, led Thorin and his companions into a secret path leading to Rivendell, forcing Thorin to go in. Hilarious!
In the original novel, when Gandalf proposed to go to Rivendell, Thorin and the others were more excited and not as resistant as in the movie version.
