Chapter 76: Bow and Jinghong
Chapter 76: Bow and Jinghong ( favorites thanks!!!)
At David's house, the careful Bilbo actually noticed that Thorin and Tanis left one after another. He wondered if it was related to what Gandalf said in the afternoon.
Millicent noticed the hobbit's distraction and said gently, "Are you worried about Tanis and his friends?"
Bilbo put down the bowl in his hand and heard the dwarves' laughter and chatter.
He nodded honestly: "Yes, don't you worry about them?"
Millicent replied in a relaxed tone, "Trust Tanes. He cares about his friends more than anyone else."
Then she winked at Bilbo. "Perhaps our only concern is that Tanis can be quite direct with his words sometimes, which might embarrass those he cares about. That's one of the things that attracts me to him, but it can also be a disadvantage."
Bilbo tilted his head in confusion at the end and asked, "Why is it called a shortcoming?"
Bernard overheard their conversation, joined in, and answered for Millicent, "This shortcoming lies with Tanis himself. He truly cares for his friends. Even if it puts him in grief or crisis later, Tanis will help without hesitation, not knowing what refusal means."
Bilbo's eyebrows moved up and down, and he still didn't understand why.
Bernard saw the expression on Bilbo's face and shrugged. "You don't seem to understand yet. Let me give you an example. What if Tanes' friend asked him to kill that friend?"
Bilbo said incredulously, "Why give this example? How could someone ask their best friend to kill them?"
Bernard took a swig of wine, put the wooden bowl down, and curled his lips: "This is a long story... Anyway, you know that Tanes did go through something similar."
Bilbo frowned. He didn't remember Tanis telling him such a thing.
Just as he was about to continue asking Tanes curiously, he suddenly heard hurried footsteps on the roof.
Bilbo's eyes followed the source of the sound, and for some reason his heart began to beat faster.
Immediately afterwards, there was a heavy sound of jumping at the door, the wooden door made a dull groan, and then was pushed open by an urgent force.
The cold wind outside rushed in like a wild beast, wantonly sweeping away the smell of wine and warmth in the house.
Bilbo felt a chill come over him, and with the cold wind came the stern face of Thorin.
The hobbit felt that what was making his heart beat so fast was what Thorin was about to say next.
Sure enough, he heard Thorin say concisely and forcefully: "Everyone, take up your weapons, a large group of wargs are approaching here."
The noise in the house suddenly died down, and after a moment's silence, it immediately became noisy again, but this time the dwarves were cursing the enemy's attack.
"I'll let them know that dwarves are not to be trifled with, especially when they dare to interrupt the dwarves' enjoyment of fine wine!"
"I'll have to sink my axe into the brainless heads of those wargs before I can calm down."
Dwalin and Gloin, the two dwarf warriors with the hottest tempers, were the first to put down their wine bowls, stood up cursing, and reached for the axes at their waists.
The other dwarves did the same, except Bombur, who was still trying to finish the remaining food in his bowl. Only after he had finished eating did he stand up from the chair that was almost too heavy for him, his big belly shaking.
As soon as Thorin finished speaking, Millicent immediately stood up and asked Thorin, "Where are Tanes and his men?"
Thorin nodded slightly and said to the tall swordswoman, "Tanes has gone ahead to the wilderness west of the village to stop the wargs. He asked me to stay and inform you to prepare for battle."
Millicent thanked Thorin softly, turned, and walked quickly out of the house.
Bernal also stood up, his movements agile and decisive.
He grabbed the heavy knight's sword from the chair. The scabbard gleamed blue in the dim candlelight and glanced at Egon.
Aegon's laughter was rough and hearty. "Don't worry, Bernard. I will find a high point in the village and kill any Wargs that manage to get past your defenses."
Qili also came over with his quiver on his back and his longbow in his hand. He said respectfully to Egon, "Mr. Egon, I will go with you."
The fire in the fireplace danced, and the clash of swords and scabbards echoed throughout David's home.
Bilbo looked at the busy dwarves and asked Gandalf beside him, feeling a little overwhelmed: "Gandalf, what should I do?"
Gandalf was still wondering why the Orcs and the Wargs had come, but Bilbo's words interrupted his thoughts.
The wizard looked at Bilbo, saw the timidity and panic hidden in his eyes, and smiled reassuringly: "You stay in David's house and protect David, his wife and children."
Bofur came over and said to Gandalf, "Let me and my brothers protect Bilbo and the farmer's family. Bilbo has never fought before, and those evil Orcs won't care about that."
Bifur and Bombur followed behind Bofur, and Gandalf was a little surprised by the dwarves' initiative.
He looked up and his eyes met Thorin's.
Thorin nodded lightly to Gandalf, then withdrew his gaze and walked out of David's house with Fili.
Gandalf then realized that the three dwarves, Bofur, Bifur and Bombur, were arranged by Thorin to protect the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
Only when most of the dwarves had left did David dare to come over and ask Gandalf what had happened.
The space in the house was not large, and the dwarves had almost filled his house, so he and his wife and children ate in his bedroom.
The noise of the dwarves drowned out what Thorin had just said, so David had no idea what he had said.
From David's perspective, he only knew that one of the dwarves roared, and then the other dwarves suddenly stood up with murderous intent, walking out of the house with their weapons in their hands, which made him a little scared.
Gandalf looked at the farmer and said in a serious tone, "Hide your wife and children, and then take me to the village chief's house. There are orcs attacking."
"Oak? Hiss, come with me quickly. No, let me get ready first." David was obviously stunned, but he quickly reacted, nodded and walked towards the inner room.
After he had told his wife and children to hide, he came out with a hoe in his hand and nodded to Gandalf.
Gandalf looked at David in surprise: "You don't look surprised or afraid?"
David said as he walked, "Because this isn't the first time our village has encountered orcs. These guys appeared earlier this year. Although we paid a price to drive the orcs away the first time, they haven't been able to gain any advantage since then. To be honest, orcs are easier to deal with than the wargs they ride. They are very fragile, and even untrained adult villagers can easily defeat them. But the trouble is the wargs. Those that run fast and have very sharp teeth are the real threat."
Gandalf took a last look at Bilbo and Bombur and the others who stayed behind to protect him, gave them a reassuring look, and followed David's pace.
He frowned after hearing David's words. "You mean the village has been attacked by orcs before? When was the first attack?" David replied without hesitation, "In March, maybe a little later. The first people to discover the orcs were the village hunters out hunting. They noticed the wargs that were different from the normal wolves. They escaped back to the village at the cost of two of their lives. This alerted the village and prevented the orcs from attacking them."
Gandalf asked again, "How many times did the Orcs attack after that?"
David thought for a moment and said, "I'm not sure about that. I go to the cottage in the deep valley every summer. But before I left, the village was attacked by orcs twice."
Gandalf smacked his lips.
Because he remembered what Tanes said about when he met Thorin and saw the dwarves being attacked by orcs.
After the Battle of Moria, when the Orcs' leader, Azog the White, disappeared, the Orcs gradually disappeared from the sight of humans.
Over the years, the Orcs would never take the initiative to attack the Dwarves from such a distance, nor would they dare to attack human settlements.
Something must have happened among the Orcs.
Gandalf narrowed his eyes, and considering the fact that Thorin had been put on the bounty in Black Language, a very unlikely guess emerged in his mind.
"We are here, Gandalf. This is the village chief's house."
David's voice called Gandalf back from his thoughts. The wizard raised his head and saw a hunter in leather armor standing outside the village chief's house with a nervous look on his face.
The chief of David's village was a muscular middle-aged man with unkempt golden hair, weather-beaten cheeks that were slightly tipsy and purple-red, and he smelled of alcohol.
It was obvious that the village chief had drunk a lot of wine that night. When he saw the hunter and David, he looked a little impatient.
But when he saw Gandalf, he seemed to have sobered up a lot. He burped and asked, "What on earth is the wind that brings a wizard to me tonight?"
"Village chief, the village guards must be dispatched quickly. The armored knight who came to the village today told me that a large group of Orc wolf scouts are coming outside." The hunter said anxiously.
Gandalf looked at him with a hint of surprise, then spoke directly, "Yes, our friends have spotted them and are trying to stop the wargs outside the village. In the name of Gandalf the Grey, I request that you dispatch the village guards to protect the village and support my friends. They are a group of dwarves from the Blue Mountains, along with two armored humans and a female swordsman with a metal prosthetic hand."
When the village chief heard these two words, it was as if a bucket of cold water was poured over his head, instantly dispelling all his drunkenness.
His eyes suddenly changed, and the expression on his face froze, no longer showing any impatience.
The village chief straightened his back and took a deep breath. The cold air entered his lungs. Feeling the cold air swirling in his lungs, he shivered.
He dug into his waist pocket several times before pulling out a bunch of keys and handing them to the hunter, saying, "The key to the bell tower is with me. Take it and ring the bell to make the villagers hide. I'll go find those guards. They should all be together by now."
Gandalf frowned, his eyes fixed on the village chief's staggering steps and the lingering smell of alcohol. He took a deep breath and said to David, "You must help your village chief and go call the guards."
After the wizard said this, he hurried away.
David nodded quickly, then froze for a moment, looking at Gandalf walking away and asked, "Where are you going?"
Gandalf disappeared quickly on the village path, leaving behind a sentence without looking back: "Of course, we must go to help Tanis and Thorin first!"
Outside the village, the moonlight was as silver as silver. A group of wolves broke through the silent night and shuttled through the shadows where the moonlight could not reach.
Their eyes flashed with a dark green light, their muscles were tense, and their limbs stepped on the inky woods and grass.
These evil creatures were getting closer and closer to the village. If it were an ordinary pack of wolves, the leader of the pack might not be able to help but let out a low and powerful wolf howl.
Yet they were wargs, intelligent creatures with their own language.
The branches and leaves of the trees swayed gently in the wind, and the ground covered with fallen leaves became a cover for the wolves. Even when they ran close to the ground, they carefully avoided those protruding rocks and dead branches, for fear of making the slightest sound.
However, a sharp sound of breaking through the air suddenly appeared, and a sharp arrow pierced through the night and hit the wolf running close to the ground in the front with incredible accuracy.
The arrow accurately pierced the hair on its forehead and embedded deeply into its brain.
Its four hooves struggled weakly in the air for a few times, and its body was carried forward by the inertia of running, hitting a raised piece of ground with a dull sound.
“Ooo ...
A short and sharp wolf howl came from the mouth of a warg, and the other wargs echoed it.
"Ah! (Keep charging!)"
The warg howled again, and the surrounding wargs responded.
They no longer concealed their whereabouts, allowing the sound of their hooves to echo in the dense forest, causing the leaves to tremble.
But another sharp arrow pierced through the night and nailed the arrowhead firmly into the head of the wolf in front.
Blood and brain matter bloomed into a cruel flower in the night. The wolf let out a short and shrill howl, its body suddenly stiffened, and then it sprinted several meters.
For the wargs, the archer's accuracy was far beyond their expectations.
In the center of the village stood the bell tower with its heavy bell hanging on it, and Egon stood on its top.
He narrowed his eyes, and under Qili's shocked gaze, the strong hand silently pulled the third arrow from the quiver.
The wrinkles on Egon's face seemed even deeper in his concentration, and the corners of his mouth drooped slightly.
Bend the bow, put the arrow on it, draw the string fully, and release the string.
It was as easy as drinking water and eating. With a dull thud, the arrow accurately hit the back of the third wolf, and blood instantly dyed its copper-green fur red.
The wolf's body twisted in pain, and its fallen body shook the dust. The roar stopped abruptly, and only weak wails remained.
