The Witcher: Make Witcher Great Again
Chapter 22 It’s free anyway, just believe me
Chapter 22 It doesn't cost any money, so just trust me
"A few days ago, a farmer in our town came out of the tavern but couldn't find his way home. He ended up spending the night on the street."
Lin En held his forehead and asked, "That farmer, is he drunk?"
The mayor looked puzzled. "That's true, but is there any necessary connection between the two?"
Lynn sighed and asked, "Anything else?"
"Yes, there's a strange fish in the river not far from the town. It lurks in the river and sometimes it suddenly jumps out and drags the washerwoman away."
Upon hearing this, Lin En immediately sat up straight.
"How many victims have there been so far?"
The mayor was stunned for a moment, then answered slowly.
“There isn’t one yet.”
"Then how did you know there were strange fish in the river?"
"Because that's what the washerwomen say."
"Then you just said that a strange fish dragged the washerwoman away. Who said that?"
"Luther said so. He solemnly assured me that he saw it with his own eyes."
Afterwards, the mayor talked about a lot of strange things that happened in the town.
But each one sounds like a joke made up by a country bumpkin to relieve boredom.
However, Lin En did not show any impatience, but listened to everything patiently.
Finally, he stood up.
"I understand, Mr. Mayor. It seems that the situation in this town is indeed very serious."
"But before I take care of your town's affairs, I have other things to attend to. I will return, and then I will see if there is anything I can do to help you."
……
Lynn pushed open the door of the pub and walked out, leaving the noisy and bustling atmosphere behind.
He walked straight out of the town. Geralt was waiting for him by the sign at the town entrance, holding Carrot.
"You're back. What's the commission?"
Lin En spread his hands and said helplessly.
"The mayor did tell me a lot, but I suspect those so-called monsters are all figments of the imagination of the people in this town."
"The drunk farmer couldn't find his way home. It wasn't because of some lost monster, it was because he was simply drunk."
"The washerwomen insist that there are strange fish in the river, but so far no victims have appeared, and all the testimony is only their one-sided account."
"More importantly, if a bloodthirsty monster really appeared somewhere, the people there would all be gloomy and sad."
"But from what I saw, the villagers here were all very happy and singing and dancing, as if they were taking these rumors as a topic of conversation."
Geralt nodded in agreement.
"Indeed, sometimes the information people provide is inaccurate. I once encountered a case where the person insisted that they were possessed by an evil spirit, but after investigation, it was discovered..."
"In fact, the so-called evil spirit was created by the victim's husband. He deliberately imitated the situation of evil spirit possession to deliberately mislead the victim and the neighbors into thinking that way. This made it easier for him to kill the victim and then disguise the evil spirit as the evil spirit to kill people."
"But since you think there are no monsters here, why don't we leave this town and find work somewhere else?"
Lynn thought about it and shook his head.
"No, to be on the safe side, it's better for us to stay and confirm it with our own eyes."
Geralt nodded in agreement.
……
So they stayed in this small town.
Lynn went to wait by the river, while Geralt went to look for the drunk farmer and others that the mayor mentioned. Over the next few days, neither of them found anything.
Lynn, who was guarding the river, did not find any strange fish. Instead, because of his handsome appearance, he was surrounded by the laundry women.
The same is true for Geralt.
According to the "victim's" statement, he went to the scene of the incident to investigate, but there were no other traces except the "victim's" own footprints.
In the end, after spending several days in town, nothing happened.
This is indeed enough to prove that there are indeed no monsters in the town.
However, neither of them felt discouraged.
It would actually be better if monsters only existed in the folks' stories and not in reality.
However, not long after the two men left the town, a farmer who was running barefoot in the mud without even any shoes caught up with them.
He gasped, "Praise the gods, my lords."
Geralt stopped Radish and nodded to the peasant. "We offer the same compliment."
The farmer bent over, supported his knees, and gasped for breath.
"I saw you guys helping the mayor in town, and I also heard you were witchers. Actually, our village is being threatened by monsters, and we need the help of witchers."
"If you need to live, follow me, my two masters."
Lynn and Geralt looked at each other.
"What kind of monster is it?"
The farmer rubbed his hands awkwardly. "I... I'm not very eloquent, but please follow me. Every household has chipped in, and we won't let you down a cent."
Geralt didn't agree immediately: "Lin, what do you think?"
He hoped that as much as possible, Lynn would make her own choices.
No matter whether the final result is good or bad.
Only in this way can Lin En grow up as quickly as possible.
Lynn agreed without much hesitation.
"It doesn't cost any money anyway, just have some faith."
"Thank you for your kindness, young sir. Let us hurry on, and if we go quickly we shall arrive before sunset."
……
When Lynn and Geralt finally arrived at the village the farmer mentioned, it was already dark.
But at the entrance of the village, a large crowd still gathered.
"It's the Witcher!"
"The Demon Hunter is coming!"
"So that's a demon hunter? He looks just like an ordinary mercenary. Can he kill monsters? I hope we don't end up having to help collect the bodies."
"Look at what you're saying. Demon hunters are experts at killing monsters."
The farmer who led the two witchers waved his hands vigorously, as if to drive away the crowd.
"Scatter away, scatter! There's nothing to see! Get out of the way!"
Following the farmer, Lynn and Geralt walked all the way to the village elder.
"Elder, I have brought you the Demon Hunter Master."
The village elder was a bald man in his forties with a worried look on his face.
After seeing Lynn and Geralt, he seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and made an inviting gesture: "That's good, that's good. Please come in, two witcher masters, let's talk inside."
