The Witcher: Make Witcher Great Again
Chapter 59: A man's road ahead cannot be filled with laughter; a road he is determined to take
Chapter 59: A man's road ahead cannot be filled with laughter; a road he is determined to take cannot be free from storms.
Lynn wasn't worried that Istrad would use the witcher as a pawn.
Because Istrad is one of the few truly wise kings among the northern kings.
Moreover, he was not opposed to becoming a vassal of Istrade.
Why? Because a true man, born between heaven and earth, cannot remain depressed and inferior to others for long...
Okay, just kidding.
In fact, becoming a vassal of Istrad is only the first step.
After all, no matter what you do, the first pot of gold is the hardest to accumulate.
After making this first pot of gold, with his foresight of the future, he will definitely be able to conquer a vast territory and establish a country where the five races of witchers, humans, gnomes, dwarves, and elves are one family, living in republican equality, common development, and common prosperity.
Of course, Lynn also knew that the other northern kings and warlocks would definitely not want to see the witcher get better.
If they knew that a mere witcher actually wanted to get his hands on the Iron Throne of power, they would surely form an unprecedented encirclement and jointly strangle the witcher.
But it doesn't matter.
It won't be long before they have no time to bother with the witchers.
Like Lynn said before.
This is a time of great change that has not been seen in a century. This is both the best of times and the worst of times.
However, it is too early to say any of this now.
Lynn estimated that it would take at least several more years before Istrade could launch a war to reclaim the throne.
After all, war is not like treating someone to a dinner.
The war did not begin when the two armies entered the battlefield, but had begun long, long before that.
Recruiting soldiers, collecting money and food...
How many swords, axes, maces, sledgehammers, spears, halberds, bows, crossbows, arrows... will the army need?
How far has our intelligence network been established within the enemy's sphere of influence? Can we grasp the enemy's troop deployment, movement routes, and armament status?
How many allies do we have, and how many potential supporters does the enemy have to win over...
Lynn estimated that by the time Istrade was ready, he would be ready too - meaning through upgrading the attribute panel - and his body would be strong enough to participate in a war.
Suddenly, a voice with vicissitudes of life interrupted his thoughts.
"Are you thinking about something, Master Witcher?"
A middle-aged captain, with a muscular build and a thick beard like a dwarf, leaned on the railing of the barge deck.
As his thoughts were interrupted, Lynn was brought back to reality.
The sound of the oars cutting through the water and the noisy chatter of the passengers on the deck all flooded into his ears.
Lin En seemed to be unable to bear it and scratched his ears.
"Yeah, what's wrong? What happened? Did anyone notice anything?"
"No, nothing," said the captain, wiping his hands on his leather jacket. "The water is calm, but there's a fog all around, and pirates might come out of the mist at any moment."
Lynn said with a smile.
"That's the ghost ship you're talking about, Captain. Pirates are indeed elusive, but not to this extent."
"The fog has affected them just as much as it has us. Don't worry, I'm keeping an eye on them. I'm not distracted."
The captain left the railing and walked aft. "For that, I'll buy you a drink when we reach Novigrad safely."
He stepped over the luggage and packages that the passengers had piled everywhere.
The horses crowded in the middle of the barge snorted and their hooves clattered on the deck.
The barge's bow parted the water, creating waves as the ship was shrouded in thick fog.
A week had passed since Isterad paid him, and Geralt found a job as a mine guard near Targ.
The mine is haunted, so the owner needs a witcher to find out what's going on.
Lynn was not with him.
Instead, he left the city of Targo, rode the black horse given to him by Isterad, which he named Nidhogg, and returned to the shore dock of the Principality of Targo along the same route, and found a barge to Novigrad.
As the pearl of the north, Novigrad must have a lot of commissions waiting for him to solve.
Geralt did not stop Lynn's decision.
After more than half a year of adventure together, Geralt has realized that he no longer needs to worry about Lynn's safety.
In fact, compared with other demon hunters of the Wolf School, Lynn has received too much special care.
You have to know that back then, whether it was him, Vesemir, Eskar, Lambert, or Berengar, they all went down the mountain alone after completing all the trials of the witcher.
Demon hunters are not Jedi Knights, and there is no tradition of having a master taking an apprentice out for training.
Lynn was well aware of this, so he was naturally grateful for Geralt's extra care.
Half an hour later, the captain of the barge came over again.
Lin En sighed: "What's the matter, Captain?"
The captain leaned against Lynn's side.
"Thank God, nothing unexpected happened. It looks like it will be another safe voyage. We're almost to Novigrad. Pirates won't show up in the waters near the mainland."
Lin En asked doubtfully, "Isn't this a good thing?"
The captain smiled wryly and said, "That's a good thing, but to be honest, I really envy you, Master Witcher."
Lynn asked, raising an eyebrow.
"How to say?"
The captain spoke with a hint of envy and jealousy in his tone.
"Whether there's an accident on the road or not, you'll get your share of the reward, not a penny less, right?"
It turns out that he thinks the money is too easy to earn.
Lynn spread his hands speechlessly.
"Is there a possibility, and I mean possibility, that it would be better if there were no accidents than if there were some?"
"You hired me to accompany you just in case, and the passengers were willing to board your ship because there was a witcher on board."
"Even though some people may say they dislike witchers, their bodies are still very honest."
The captain laughed.
"That makes sense, Master Demon Hunter. Are you interested in taking on a long-term job? Although the rewards may not be as great as the bounty you earn from hunting monsters, at least there aren't as many risks. What do you think?"
Lin En waved his hand. "If there's another time, I'll still take your ship, but forget about long-term work. It's not for me."
After rejecting the captain's proposal, the captain never bothered Lin En again.
And so, the barge arrived safely in Novigrad without incident.
Looking at the bustling crowd on the dock and the ships docked in the harbor, Lin En couldn't help but smile bitterly.
It turns out that wherever I go, something unexpected happens. I am indeed not the protagonist in the knight's storybook.
The original novel does not clearly mention the specific time of Istrad's restoration, but in this book the time of its restoration is moved back a bit to facilitate the development of the book's plot.
In addition, in this book, Istrad is a wise king, so there will be no plot like "Istrad is worried that the protagonist will become too successful and threaten the king" and so on.
